Use it in the earliest stages........2007-04-26
The oversimplifications and shorthand in this book are most helpful at the earliest phases of screenwriting, when you're just mapping out the big chunks of character psychology and plot. The last thing you need at that point is nuance! Using D'Vari's MORE system to make sure you have a range of character types with built-in conflict is a huge time-saver. As others have observed, you can get more refined typology from the original Myers-Briggs, but if you're ready for that kind of detail you probably shouldn't be using a typology at all; by then the characters themselves should be taking over anyway.
A new approach to character work for a writer.......2006-10-03
Of all the types of writing books to read, my favorites are those that deal with characters. Marisa D'Vari does not disappoint the reader/writer with Creating Characters: Let Them Whisper Their Secrets.
The first chapter provides a quick, but thorough, examination of Personality Types using the author's own More Personality System(tm), the ancient Enneagram system of personality typecasting, Hippocrates' humorous philosophy, and Carl Jung's theory. If you've ever met someone and felt you'd met his type before (as is mentioned in the book), Chapter One might give you the answer as to why you felt that way.
Chapter Three: How to Summon Characters from Their Magical Spheres is something to be experienced. Obviously, it's of interest to me as I'm fully into fantasy stories and movies, but this chapter is not a dance through the spring fairy rings. It's serious business. All writers experience that moment when a character comes to them, fully-fleshed, ready to fill the blank pages with his story. Chapter Three touches all too briefly on the subject of the collective unconscious, but makes up for it with a lesson on how to nurture your ability to let your characters come to you.
Though Chapter Three is good, Chapter Four: Techniques to Discover Your Character's Inner World, is even better. Many writers prefer to allow a character to develop while his story is being written, and often this creates problems when characters act in ways that don't work. Chapter Four helps you get past this. It also helps you with the backstory so that you not only have enough to work on, but there's enough there for others involved--i.e., actors and directors--to carry the character's personality further.
Another nice thing about this book is that it doesn't have to be read cover to cover; you can pick and choose the chapters. But once you start reading, it's hard to put down. D'Vari has an easy style that reads well. Some of the information included you already know, not because you've read it elsewhere, but because it's so logical that it falls into the category of Collective Memory. For instance, Chapter Six: Coloring Dialogue Via Personality Type is so very accurate. Yet, it offers ideas authors don't always pay attention to. One little trick she mentions is to think of an everyday question, such as "How are you?" and then have a character/personality type answer it. Not everyone is going to mutter the usual "uh, fine ..."
There are, of course, summaries and assignments at the end of chapters. Even if you're someone who doesn't like to do the exercises or assignments in a writing book, don't skim over these pages. Be sure to read them. D'Vari has worded her assignments in such a way that they get you thinking about your characters. Even when you've put the book down, the questions prick at you until you have to give them more time.
Just when you think you've read all you can read about coming up with characters to people your stories, a book comes out to let you know there actually is more information out there.
Starts off okay but fizzles.......2006-07-27
Basically, what the author has done is to group the various related types in the Enneagram (or Myers-Briggs or Jung) into just 4 types and uses a scoring system to weight each one.
Movers - driven, goal-oriented 'Type A'
Observers - factual, aloof, and insecure
Relaters - romantic "people" person
Energizers - charming, flamboyant storyteller
(Hence "M.O.R.E.")
(There's a danger to this kind of oversimplification. If we were to divide up the world into, say, "Hispanic" and "Not Hispanic" it would simplify the categories, but a lot of nuances and depth of cultures would be lost. It seems to be counterproductive if depth is what you're looking for.)
I've tried using this book with my 3 main characters in my current project. And I find that by applying this methodology, they're more likely to be alike than different. There's not nearly enough on distinguishing characters *within* these 4 types once you have them. For example, let's say I have two Movers. They shouldn't be exactly alike, so how do I make them different? If she scores 27 for Mover and Relater, how do I balance those? If he scores 26 as an Observer and 22 as an Energizer, how do I factor in the latter?
After your characters are categorized, the book seems to fizzle and the discussion on M.O.R.E types appears to be over. The author gets into "channeling," character goal-setting (and not just for the story but for a lifetime), determining a character's wardrobe, and visualizing a character's "autopsy." It would seem that types would drive something like wardrobe choices and goals, but it's not even mentioned.
I was hoping for more.
Marisa does it again!.......2005-10-09
Marisa D'Vari has woven a powerful and dynamic "magic" into the More-Personality system she developed that will help writers enhance their work by truly speaking through the characters they create. Marisa's years of professional experience and expertise is evident in this new work. She walks writers through the blockages that keep many from being productive. She details and outlines the complexities of personality that need to be addressed in order to bring a mediocre piece of writing to higher standard. The "it" of good material starts with the writer, but is spoken through the characters that are created. In order for a work to be deemed credible, it has to be believable. Skilled writers know how to match dialogue to character. They know how to speak the story through the words of those complex personalities that have been brought together to carry the tale. These characters have to be purposeful and they have to speak to the theme and live through the plot. I can't think of any other writer on these topics who brings a "process" to the table that can work for the skilled successful writer as well as the novice who is still in training. This is a "must have" book. Marisa has done it again!

Excellent Starting Book.......2004-04-10
I teach piano and have found this book to be superior to numbered method books. The tunes are good and the gradual increase in difficulty is easy to teach. The second accompaniment to be played by the teacher is always interesting and supportive. These are very musical beginning pieces. I recommend this book without hesitation

Highest Recommendation for Beginner to Intermediate.......2007-03-04
I believe this to be the best piano book ever published for easy to intermediate piano. Denes Agay (now dead) is a trusted name for authentic and easy-to-read transcription. The song selection includes the best pieces, including Bach's Minuet in G, Beethoven's Fur Elise, and so many other great songs. The songs range from somewhat easy to intermediate, and the techniques needed vary, so you can use this book for many lessons. I cannot emphasize enough how great of a collection this is.
For years my two daughters have played songs from this book for lesson, tests, and enjoyment. Our copy is so worn out, and yet they keep going back to it again and again. We have saved much money with this one large collection. This book is worth the money several times over. Highest recommendation. Must have.
Great Piano Book to add to your collection.......2005-10-22
A friend of ours from Germany visited for 3 weeks this summer and brought this book. He only has an electric piano so he was excited to play it on a regular piano. The music was so good that I had to get a copy! It is one purchase I don't regret!
Superb!!!!!.......2001-07-06
This book is well edited and fun. It provides enjoyment and has great songs. These include Claire De Lune by Claude Debussy; Rustle of Spring by Christian Sinding; Fur Elise by Ludwig von Beethoven; Prelude in C major by Johann Sebastian Bach and many other great classics. It is apperently well thought out and concise. But what did you expect, it is after all by the great Dr. Denes Agay!
Book Description
These familiar melodies for one piano, four hands are in arrangements equally easy for both players, with the melody alternating between the two. The collection includes Careless Love, Jamaica Farewell, and many more favorites.

Fun songs to play.......2006-03-09
We love Jamaican Farewell in this book, some of my students play it on the vibes while I play it on piano. The duets are easier than the ones in Piano Duets, and this book is a good partner to that one. (I bought both).
34 easy-but-fun duets - 4 hands 1 piano.......2001-08-01
These pieces are mostly quite easy to play, and so are suited to beginners, beginners at dueting, or people who just want some fun things to play with a friend that won't need too much work to get going.
The pieces are quite short, only a couple are longer than a page, and cover a big range of styles - themes from classics, folk songs and jazz. Also, Agay has made the bars line up for the Primo and Secondo parts (doesn't seem like much until you play a duet without that and have to write the bar numbers on each part).
Tunes include: Oh Come All Ye Faithful, The Harmonious Blacksmith, All The Pretty Little Horses, The Trout, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Fasination, and themes from classics and operas.
Product Description
For both playing and singing, this is a comprehensive collection of the best loved carols, hymns, songs, and solos for the holiday season. They are all arranged for piano with complete lyrics and chord names. Includes The First Noel, Jingle Bells, and O Holy Night.

DRUMS AND RHYTHM.......2000-06-08
This book is a fine introduction to the world of drums and Rhythms.
Part one deals in general with drums and rhythms and how they affect us in many ways, part two is a small encyclopedia of drums and part three deals with other sounding instruments that are often used in rhythmic music, there is one mistake there though, on page 117 he describes a Bullroarer, but what he is descriping is a Whirlie, for a good description of a bullroarer see Mickey Harts book Planet Drum and you can hear a nice sample of how a Bullroarer sounds on the first track of Santanas Borboletta, played by Airto Moreira, for an example of how a Whirlie sound see the book and the CD Gravikords, Whirlies and Pyrophones by Bart Hopkins, and listen to the track by Sarah Hopkins, you can check both of these out on the sound samples on Amazon.
Of course this is a minor point but still I wanted to point it out.
In part four he deals with rhythm basics, the three, four and five beat pulse and gives some exercices for rhythmic independence, polyrhythms and the clave
Then in part five he gives examples of some rhythms mainly from Africa and Cuba and some tips on how to play the conga and the shekere.
As said this is a good introduction to the world of drumming and rhythms and if you go through this book you are well on your way to being , at least a decent drummer with some good knowledge of the basic principles of rhythm.
Also recomended are Rhythm book by Alan Dworsky, Peter Magadini, Sule Greg Vilson, Reinhart Flatischler and videos by Kalani, Paulo Mattioli, Alex Acuna and Airto Moreira.

wonderful edition well worth it.......2007-06-12
Included is an 8 page arrangement for piano and organ including pedal notation. Printing is dark and pages large and well spaced. I'm still learning this piece. The version I learned previously included only few verses an edit from Cantata 147 in simplified notation. This version has more voicings so it's harder for me to play but it sounds lovely. I will be busy with this for a while.

In The Joy of Six, Dworsky adapts African and Afro-Cuban polyrhythms to the keyboard in a world-beat classical style. At the heart of the book are four beautiful solo pieces designed to teach different rhythms. Each piece is covered in a separate lesson, where it's broken down into bite-sized patterns that start easy and gradually get more difficult, designed to lead you step-by-step into the magical world of 6/8 time. As you work through the patterns, Dworsky will be with you every step of the way, anticipating your questions and pointing out whatever will make your journey easier. His clear writing makes rhythmic concepts easily understandable, while his conversational tone creates the feel of private lessons. And the CD that comes with the book contains a recording of every pattern and piece, making The Joy of Six a complete self-instruction package.

wordy book on billiards.......2007-08-23
I just wanted a basic book on billiards and billard etiquette. This book is too big and wordy. I guess it is a good book if you are considering purchasing a billiard table, as it goes into great detail about what to look for, etc. I wanted just a basic book.
Good.......2007-03-03
Its good when your starting in to the pool. if not you may find only a 1/3 of the book use full.
great addition to any library of a pool player.......2007-02-02
I found this book very well written with good detail and explainations. When words were difficult, excellent pictures helped make things clear. I played pool for years but was unable to play for a long time. I bought the book as a refresher and was very impressed. It has helped me a lot to get back on track with my game. Any serious pool player who wants help with their game can benefit from this book. New players as well as old.
Great for a beginner.......2006-11-05
I am just learning about pool, and I found this book to be just what I needed. She clearly exlains each issue, mostly in a very good order for learning them. My friends can't believe how quickly I have improved. Now I have to decide if I want to share the book with them or just start beating them.
Readable, Informative, A Great Start.......2006-03-11
I'm new to the game so I can't critically review every bit of advice in this boook. However, I have a STACK of new books on pool and this is the only one that one can actually read from cover to cover. All of Ms. Laurence's advice has been sound so far, and my game is moving along. Moving along very nicely, in fact, after some fumbling before I got this book. Perfect for beginners. She gets into some pretty advanced theory and practice, not just newbiw stuff -- but if she ever writes a book with "Advanced" in the title, I fully intend to buy it ASAP. I do wish there was a way to take a book to the pool hall without looking like a fool: this would be the one.
Book Description
You're no idiot, of course. You know that "English" isn't just the name of a language, it's also the type of spin you use to control the cue ball in pool. But when it comes to racking them up, making a break shot, and sinking balls in the corner pocket, you feel like "English" is your second language. Don't hang up your cue stick yet! In her comprehensive book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Pool & Billiards, Ewa Mataya Laurance--one of the world,s most accomplished and mesmerizing players--gives you:

Not just for beginners!.......2006-01-14
I've read several reviews here stating that this book is only good for beginners. I've been playing for years, and I don't think I know all there is to know on the subject.
I finally bought a table, and after dropping a considerable chunck of change on that I became interested in learning more about the game as having a table gives one a good oportunity to improve.
I found this book and at first glance I thought that it would probably just serve those just beginning, wrong. There is a lot of useful info in these pages. Everything from making all kinds of shots, several differnent ways to shoot a bank shot, caring for your home table, cue, among other things.
These "Idiot's Guide" books cover a great deal of subject matter without a lot of stuff just to fill up pages.
Some authors on billiards will mention a technique, only to say that they think it's not a very good way to do it, but then only give you their recommendation, which may not work for you. This book lays several techniques out there and lets you decide. I saw the ones I've used over the years, but some that I didn't know about. Doesn't mean that what I was doing was wrong, there are just other ways to do the same thing.
Example; I had always played banks by feel, and after a lot of years made them most of the time. This book shows a few ways to aim at the pocket which I didn't know about. I still play by feel, but it's interesting to know what others are may be thinking when they do it.
This is the best book ever for a beginner!!.......2004-08-24
Five years ago I was that beginner. I studied this book as though I were taking a college course. Two years ago I bought my own pool table. Sorry Ewa, not a Brunswick. Now that I'm ready for them, I have just ordered 3 books by Robert Byrne's. I also have a pool mentor/friend who teaches me and loans me pool videos.
April 4, 2007 - Our "Olhausen" pool table was the only piece of furniture that survived Hurricane Katrina. We didn't even have to recover it.
Best So Far.......2002-09-17
I've read quite a few books on pool and billiards, and this one is the best so far. I find myself returning to it for reference quite often, even though I've read several books since this one.
It does get a little wordy in places but it's an easy read and full of interesting facts. Although geared toward beginner to intermediate, I believe this book would be helpful and entertaining for anyone interested in pool or billiards...at any skill level. (I've been playing over 30 years.)
A Wonderful Book.......2002-09-16
This book covers everything from history to buying a table, from the kick shot to the masse shot. It includes lists of players and their awards, resources, trick shots, and lots of other useful stuff, plus funny or amazing stories. I must have read it 10 times, and I'm still not tired of it.
a G reat book for everyone.......2002-04-18
I READ THIS BOOK BY EWA MATAYA LAURANCE & i THINK EVERYONE THAT NEEDS TO FIND A PART OF THERE GAME THAT IS MISSING OR JUST WANT A GREAT READ THIS IS IT . sHE EXPLAINES THINGS WELL & SIMPLE . Ifeel that even the more advanced player can get something out of this book . I lirned about the different amounts of english you can use for different results on pg. 210.
