Book Description
A thought-provoking assessment of the history of cinema from one of its masters Cinema is a unique book from one of the most important film-makers in history-Jean-Luc Godard. His influence is cited by key contemporary filmmakers, including Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese, Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders, Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino. Here, in an interview with Professor Youssef Ishaghpour, Godard looks back on a century of film as well as his own work and career. Born with the twentieth century, cinema became not just the century's dominant art form but also its best historian. Godard argues that-after Chaplin and Pol Pot, Monroe and Hitler, Stalin and Mae West, Mao and the Marx Brothers-film and history are inextricably intertwined. Godard presents his thoughts on film theory, cinematic technique, film histories, and the recent video and DVD revolution. He expounds on his central concerns-how film can 'resurrect the past,' the role of rhythm in film, and how cinema can be an 'art that thinks.' Godard defines his lifelong obsession with cinema as well as cinema's lifelong obsession with history.
Customer Reviews:
Deceptive.......2005-09-12
Very quickly- I also bought this for Godard's comments. I would'nt have spend so much for such a brief book otherwise. Strangely almost all of Godard's comments are cut short(lots of ......after his coments). The editor (of the fine journal Trafic) is almost always quoted in total. Also, I found Ishagapours comments predictable. I lost my interest in post structuralist & post colonial theory years ago. Once the post Baudrillard,Virillo, Lyotard generation starts writing it seems "prewritten":all the comments seem no more than illustrative of the various theories assumptions. Godard speaks/writes impressionistically with brilliance. It's a style of writing attacked by the critics who praise his work. Impressionistic writing (also derided by conceptulists like Kosuth earlier) I think allows for novel insights. It's too bad a dazzling impressionist is truncated by a self absorbed editor. Any interview where the subject has 1/5 th space of the interlocutor is odd indeed. Worth buying if you love Godard and can afford so much for only a few pages.Godard's comments get 5 stars. If you can read French there is a brilliant volume of Godard on Godard featuring more recent writings(than the earlier English language volume). Why it is'nt translated is a mystery to me. Why texts like this are instead is also a mystery.
A real dialogue.......2005-06-20
All along his life, Jean-Luc Godard has looked for interlocutors, partners. The form of the speach, discourses and specifically dialogues (exchanges, dialectics, maieutic...) is a seminal research in his work and his global practice. Several of his best films are only dialogues, as "France Tour Détour" to name only one. But he rarely met people who dare to act as full interlocutors, not as disciples or as simple fans. Ishagpour, a very acurate, cultivated, elegant French-Aegyptian critic, expert on Welles and modern cinema, is one of these rare persons, and the result is excellent.
A total misrepresntation representation (A JLG admirerer).......2005-06-05
This small book of dialogues between Godard and Youssef Ishaghpour is, to put it mildly, a total rip off. In their dialogues Godard furnishes us with no more than 20 pages of
comments to Ishaghpour's exceedingly lengthy comments and questions. After just viewing Godard's excellent new film, "Notre Musique" this was a real "downer." The mention of the Archaelogy of Cinema in the the subtitle and "The Gaze" as a chapter title led me to believe this would have a tint of the the thought of the great french social philospher Michel Foulcault (he is mentioned once or twice).
I thought a good interviewer is supposed to evoke meaningful responses from his subject. Ishaghapour doesn't let- or Godard doesn't want to- get more than a few sentence reponse in.
Another annoying element to this borderline fraudelnt presentation is that the Amazon description gives the impression this is significant tratise on Godard's thoughts on the twentieth century's political and cultural events. Rather Ishagapour is given a forum for his thought and his interpretations of Godard. Worse still, Godard doesn't even
display his critical acumen or irreverance and is led like a lamb by his interviewer,
I'm not saying that Ishaghapour doesn't have some worthwile comment's plus an article at the end of the book. But wasn't this supposed to be about JLG- duh?
I sincerely hope I am wrong. I'm definitely sending this one back. Come on now. How dumb do the publishers think we have become to think that this book is anything but a misuse of the master's name.
There are some intereting testimonials by major figures and institutions on the back of this book by "The Village Voice," Pauline Kael...but none refer to this book.

Book Description
African American Music: An Introduction is a collection of thirty essays by leading scholars which survey major African American musical genres, both sacred and secular, from slavery to the present. It is the most comprehensive study of African American music currently available, with sixteen essays on major genres of African American music, as well as lengthy sections on the music industry, gender, and music as resistance. The work brings together, in a single volume, treatments of African American music that have existed largely independent of each other. The research is based in large part on ethnographic fieldwork, which privileges the voices of the music-makers themselves, while interpreting their narratives through a richly textured mosaic of history and culture. The book is replete with references to seminal recordings and recording artists, musical transcriptions, photographs, and illustrations that bring the music to life as expressions of human beings. At the same time, it includes the kind of musical specificity that brings clarity to the structural, melodic, and rhythmic characteristics that both distinguish and unify the music of African Americans.

Book Description
Theomusicology is musicology as a theologically informed discipline. Borrowing thought and method from anthropology, sociology, psychology, and philosophy, it has as its subject the myriad cultural worlds of ethical, religious, and mythological belief. Theomusicological research into cultural/intercultural reflections on the ethical, the religious, and the mythological involves the study of music in the domain or communities of the sacred, the secular, and the profane. By examining the depths of sacrality, secularity, and profanity in the music of civilization's many cultures, the theomusicologist can increasingly discern how particular peoples perceive the universal mysteries that circumscribe their mortal existence, and how the ethics, theologies, and mythologies to which they subscribe shape their worlds. To accomplish his goal, Spencer divides his book into two parts. Part One, "The Domain of Theomusicology," functions as a methodological exposition to Part Two. It defines the meaning of and suggested method for theomusicology and delineates the theomusicologist's best and broadest possible perspective on the world. Part Two, "The Discourses of Theomusicology," illustrates how theomusicology can, and at its best does, involve dialogue with different disciplines as well as a gamut of historical epochs and movements. Each chapter is divided into sections based on the particular text theomusicology has read and interacted with. Spencer's work establishes theomusicology as a scholarly discipline and a valid research approach to studying world religious, mythological, and ethical beliefs via music. It is essential reading for historical musicologists, ethnomusicologists, and scholars of sacred music.

Great work........2000-11-10
I am currently a student of Earl Stewart's at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and we are using his book in his class. The book is full of great information about the history of African-American music. I can only make one negative remark and that is that the book at times required the reader to have some knowledge and background in reading music. If one can look past this problem, they will find that is book is very interesting and great for anyone interested in learning more about the African-American musical history and style.

impressed.......2007-01-16
I didn't expect to receive a Brand New copy of this book, since you can't even buy the game new anymore. I was really surprised and delighted that not only were there no missing pages, it was unused.
SILENT HILL 3 guide: Frightening and very helpful .......2006-10-15
This game is the best of this serie that i've ever seen. This one is full of surprises and tips. The strategy guide is complete for me. It is helpful for get all ends.I enjoyed a lot with this guide. I hope you too.
Great guide.......2006-06-29
This guide looks great and detailed. The only thing I don't like very much is the appendix. The endings weren't detailed but a few sentences instead. Also there is no pictures that correspond to each ending.
not the scariest game, but still good.......2005-09-24
i thought this was a good cheat book and it was really descriptive, even though there were a few typos...the game was also good as well
great book, great author..........2004-10-04
let me say that if there was ever a silent hill you needed a strategy guide for, silent hill 3 is it. I was able to breeze through the original and the second on hard mode, but Silent hill 3 does a very good job of leaving you lost and confused throughout most of the game. The guide does a great job of walking you through the tough parts, and holding your hand when things get chaotic and creepy. As with all guides however, I recomend buying this one only if you are a fan or collector, because you can easilly find guides for SH3 online for free.

Book Description
In Refiguring Spain, Marsha Kinder has gathered a collection of new essays that explore the central role played by film, television, newspapers, and art museums in redefining Spain’s national/cultural identity and its position in the world economy during the post-Franco era. By emphasizing issues of historical recuperation, gender and sexuality, and the marketing of Spain’s peaceful political transformation, the contributors demonstrate that Spanish cinema and other forms of Spanish media culture created new national stereotypes and strengthened the nation’s place in the global market and on the global stage.
These essays consider a diverse array of texts, ranging from recent films by Almodóvar, Saura, Erice, Miró, Bigas Luna, Gutiérrez Aragón, and Eloy de la Iglesia to media coverage of the 1993 elections. Francoist cinema and other popular media are examined in light of strategies used to redefine Spain’s cultural identity. The importance of the documentary, the appropriation of Hollywood film, and the significance of gender and sexuality in Spanish cinema are also discussed, as is the discourse of the Spanish media star—whether involving film celebrities like Rita Hayworth and Antonio Banderas or historical figures such as Cervantes. The volume concludes with an investigation of larger issues of government policy in relation to film and media, including a discussion of the financing of Spanish cinema and an exploration of the political dynamics of regional television and art museums. Drawing on a wide range of critical discourses, including feminist, postcolonial, and queer theory, political economy, cultural history, and museum studies, Refiguring Spain is the first comprehensive anthology on Spanish cinema in the English language.
