An Eye Opening Experience.......2004-12-23
I studied this book with the author. It is a masterful work written with intense passion and desire to unearth the real drives behind modern consumer culture. Anyone who picks it up will, no doubt, look at the little things in his/her life much differently afterwords. Don't get me wrong, the book is to the extreem left, but the ideals of the left are often true and we are so taken in by the consumer culture that we do not wish to admit them. If anyone feels as though they are living in a daze, giving in to the false demands the culutre puts upon them,, this book will give hope that these things were created and forged by men. Read this with an open mind and a critical eye upon your own life!
A brilliant overview of the power of images in our lives.......2001-01-17
I read this book when it originally came out and then, recently, came across the revised edition. Reading it in 2001, the book remains fresh offering a brilliant look at the power of images within our lives. The sections on fashion and on early movies, in particular, present a wonderful look at the interface between mass culture and personal lives. A must read.
An interesting, although dark look at consumerism.......2000-01-31
In reading this book for a course on gender and consumerism, I found that many of the points the authors made were true, although they tend towards the pessimistic. While criticizing the control aspects of advertising and consumerism, they play into a "conspiracy theory" mindset that the same advertising they're criticizing helped to create. A good read overall, but remember to read it, as all things, critically

Excellent One-volume Openings Guide.......2007-05-17
In my opinion, Nunn's Chess Openings is every bit as good as Modern Chess Openings-14, which I also own. NCO is denser and has more lines, but MCO-14 is slightly easier to use. Both books compliment each other. It is very interesting to note how each book often differs in their evaluations of identical lines. If you're an intermediate player or stronger, I recommend getting BOTH!
Pure Garbage Opennings.......2007-03-20
I am an amateur, but even though i can tell you this books is pure trash.
Here is a very small first pages sample of how bad this thing is.
The english openning is a well know White Openning, in which white plays
C4 rather than the usual D4 or E4 to fight for the center right from the start it is like a Sicilian for white. Black can reply with a variety such as F6 after which white can logicaly play D4, this stupid worthless books tells you to play NC3 which blacks counter attacks very strongly with D5..... so take a look and follow this books recomendation and you will certanly loose.......what a piece of garbage..........i play a lot against my CM 2000 i like computers better cause they TACTICALLy sound and you have to be VERY tough to at least DRAW which I have, this books is as worthless as a hoarse dropping on your shelf.........
I have drawn with CM 200 using the LOGICAL
C4 .. NF6
D4 .. E6
NC3......
etc....
Good reference on the openings.......2006-07-14
There are basically two popular 1 volume opening reference books, "Nunn's Chess Openings" and "Modern Chess Openings". I have heard many opinions as to which is better. I personally think that each has their individual strong points as to accuracy (I like Nunn better) and better coverage of more of the major openings (I like MCO better). So my advice? Get both and have the best of two worlds. If you are a beginner, or in search of that perfect opening to suit your style then you need a book that covers the ideas behind the openings and should book looking at books that cover that, such as "Understanding the Chess Openings" or a good opening trap book. You want to know the ideas behind the openings and not to just memorize lines.
More complete than MCO.......2006-06-08
This one volume openings book is more complete than MCO - 14, since it has smaller font and packs more information into the pages.
Requires work on your part in order to be useful.......2004-07-14
The general sentiment that I've read about this book is correct: there is little in the way of explicit explanations as to which line is better. What this means is that you will not be spoon-fed reasons why a given line is better for white or black; you'll have to do the legwork yourself through an analysis of the position.
Frankly, I wouldn't have it any other way. People often complain that many books don't give "the ideas" behind openings, but the truth is that there are so many ideas that the truth of a position can't be summed up with a one-liner like "White is better because of his active bishops". It's only though analysis of typical positions that arise from your favorite openings that you will understand the complexities that arise from said openings.
Before buying this book, I recommend playing until you consider yourself to be at an intermediate level in the fields of tactics, analysis and strategy before buying this book.
Book Description
The Pirc is a modern chess opening whose unbalanced nature usually leads to eventful play and a decisive outcome. A perfect complement to John Nunn's earlier work, The Complete Pirc, a guide to pawn structures and their importance in forming and executing plans.

A must buy for player who use the Pirc Defense.......1999-09-20
This book is a must buy for tournament players who play the Pirc. Having gone through parts of this book I found the use to be typical for standard opening books. Although you have an obligitory introduction to each section that involves text, I found the conclusions to be fair, honest and reasonably thorough. What set the book apart from the rest is that it is from John Nunn. I feel that I can trust his opinions given his past work. It would have been nice and indeed enlightning, if John Nunn put in more text.

Pirc Alert!: A Complete Defense Against 1. e4
ASIN: 0020294913 |
Customer Reviews:
It IS complete ... and it is great as well........2004-03-14
It sounds almost silly to be reviewing a book that is nearly 20 years old! (Have I lost my mind?) Most opening books that are over 5 years old are considered dated - any book this old is genearlly considered a DINOSAUR!!
So why am I doing it? Just in the hopes you might buy and appreciate this book! (If it were current, I would eaily give it five stars.)
I purchased this book shortly after it first came out. (1989) I had a "real/regular" job back then, so it took me at least six months to work my way all the way through this book. I went through EVERY chapter. Some of the chapters, I literally played over every line, note, (etc.) that was given in this wonderful volume. I also studied several of the games in detail, writing out my thoughts in a spiral-bound notebook.
I was annotating a game today, (on the Pirc); that I played in one of the ICC/Dos Hermanos, {big} Internet tournaments. (I was trying to remember one line in particular. Because I had difficulty in recalling all the analysis, I had to dig this book out.) This gave me a chance to re-read a couple of chapters and go through a few of the variations. And I thought to myself, "What a great book this effort really is!"
And while this book may NOT represent the cutting edge of opening theory on the Pirc, it has many other redeeming features. The lines are laid out in a very logical manner, the author starts with the most popular lines, (The Austrian Attack); and goes from there. There is a TON of analysis, Nunn did not hold much back here. If he got to a point where he thought he saw a better move, he told you. (This book was written BEFORE chess programs got real strong, so check EVERYTHING you intend to play {in tournaments} with a good analysis engine ... or your favorite chess program!!)
The 'blurb' on the cover says "Intermediate," but I am sure that even a near beginner could follow most of what goes on here, there are PLENTY of very good and frank discussions. The author really went out of the way here to do a really bang-up job. The most common-place ideas and plans are covered in here.
Last year I played in a "quick" (money) tournament in Alabama, (Game in 25 minutes); and I defeated a player (who used this opening) whose rating was nearly 2600 USCF. He paid me a very nice complement after the game. He told me that I had played very well and I had not used much time on the clock. I am sure that MUCH of my understanding of this whole opening was gained during the time I spent with Nunn - - - in this book! {Does this make me a Nunn student? I guess in a way, it does.}
I recommend this book VERY highly!!! (But buy a new book to get a feel for the latest opening lines.) I have literally hundreds of books on the opening - I have many on the Pirc as well. But I personally guarantee that if you spend some time studying inside these pages, you will learn more from this book than 50 other opening books; where all they do is pump out the latest games - with no explanation, whatsover! Get it! And learn!

Book Description
John Nunn has an unparalleled reputation as a chess theoretician and writer of the highest class. In this book, for the first time since the best-selling Secrets of Grandmaster Play, he focusses his attention on his own games.
Includes victories over Short, Tal, Korchnoi, Anand, Gelfand, Christiansen and many other top players. Features in-depth analysis of topical opening variations. All the analysis has been computer-checked. A manual of attacking chess, from one of the world's best tacticians. This books is far more than a collection of superbly analysed games, however. The author has brought the games to life with anecdotes from the events, and provides many practical tips which will be of benefit to aspiring chess players of all levels of ability. 320 pages.

John Nunn.......2006-03-18
[...]I go to. I especially like that it includes victories over many top player, it features in-depth analysis of topical opening variations, all the analysis has been computer-checked and that it is also a manual of attacking chess, from one of the world's best authors.
40 games from one of the greatest attacking players ever.......2005-02-13
This book follows on from "Secrets of Grandmaster Play", which John Nunn previously co-authored with PC Griffiths, so it begins in 1985 when Nunn was already a world-class grandmaster. As he points out, the style is slightly different from the earlier book in being rather more personal and giving more psychological insights and anecdotes. The effect is to make it a more enjoyable read, if slightly less intense.
I have always thought of Nunn as a classical chess player, in that he studies the opening profoundly, seeks to gain advantage (or equalize) in orthodox - though vigorous - fashion, and also has great strength in the endgame. This combination of erudition and straightforwardness makes him a particularly good subject to emulate. These 40 games are annotated really deeply, although the opening analysis needs to be checked for new discoveries in the ten years since publication.
Perhaps the high point of this collection is Nunn's 25-move victory over Sokolov of the USSR at the Dubai Olympiad, 1986. Wiping a top Soviet player off the board so unceremoniously was something that British players hardly ever did until Nunn and Tony Miles came along. (They were usually happy to draw).
The openings reflect Nunn's fairly stable repertoire - assorted Black defences to his 1. e4, with quite a few Sicilians, and a high proportion of King's Indians as black. Unfortunately the book lacks an index, and the brief table of contents does not say what opening was played in each game. So there is nothing for it but to read methodically through from start to finish. Thanks to Nunn's exciting style and painstaking, literate notes - spiced up by the occasional amusing story - this is no sacrifice at all.
Great collection of games.......1998-02-08
This book contains 314 pages pure chess. A selection of John Nunns best games with in-depth analysis of each stage (opening, middlegame, endgame). And instead of just giving variations, you will find variations AND written comments showing the strategy and explaining the decisions. It is great to learn every stage of chess playing and chess psychology.

Good comprehensive work.......1999-04-07
Have been waiting for this to come out ever since I got the first volume, and it does not disappoint. Timely and topical, for example, devoting a chapter to Kasparov's favored 6. Be3 Ng4 line which was so effective at Linares 1999. This book was primarily authored by Gallagher, and I like his work very much.
Customer Reviews:
Good? Yes. Outdated? Very much so........2007-08-28
Up until 2003, this was the only book to have created a repertoire using the open sicilian for white. Authors shyed away from making a book like that in between 1995 and 2003 because it is such a massive task, and the latest book, experts vs the sicilian used about four times the authors of Beating the Sicilian 3. At the time of publishing, this book was cutting edge. However, now that the year in 2007, the time has come to move on from this book, because only kalshnikov analysis can last this long. The new book is definitely the masterful Exprts vs. the sicilian. 5 stars for initial quality, 1 star for 2007 quality.
give me some ibuprophen.......2002-03-29
This is a highly recommended book to one of the most frequently encountered openings, so I bought it. It takes two weeks to read five pages and the profuse variations strain my brain. This is not a book for a beginner. Be forewarned. If you are an elite player or exceptionally gifted (over 1800), disregard this.
A MUST HAVE book for those that play 1.e4!.......1999-09-09
For those of you that want to beat those pesky Sicilianites, this is the book for you!!! Nunn and Gallagher do an excellent job of providing White with good variations of the Open Sicilian. Prior to reading this book, when I was trying out the Closed Sicilian and King's Indian Attack against it, I went winless in 7 games with only 1 draw. Since cracking this book open, and playing 3.d4 instead of those Anti-Sicilian systems that just don't work, to the date of this review, I have yet to be beat in a tournament game playing the open variation as White. For those of you that play the Sicilian as Black (which I absolutely refuse to do), hold on to your hats. You'll be in for a beating if your opponent has read this book!!
Exceptional Intoduction especially for the White side.......1999-06-30
This book is a great way to achieve positions of at least equality. It is easy to find variations with the index. Very exciting moves to exploit opponents' mistakes. Stepping into the wealth of theory involved with the Sicilian requires a guide, this is a must. You won't regret buying this book.
Essential reading for playing against the Sicilian Defence........1997-08-08
Striving to win all your games as White
when playing against 1...c5!? then there is no doubt that this popular book is a must buy. Author John Nunn offers a good solid response to any variation your opponent might play (for example Be2 vs Najdorf, Keres Attack vs. Scheveningen, 9.0-0-0 vs. Dragon), with a harmonious balance of variations, games, and notes to avoid overwhelming you with too much information. Each chapter has a concise and informative introduction which is followed by key games showing the main strategy for the given variation. Couple this with a useful index of variations and the books attractive layout and you have one of the most useful books on the Sicilian Defence available.

Helpful.......2000-08-26
Published in 1993, the only downside i see is that it only contains 144 pages of material. There is a bonus however, in that the Modern defence is also addressed. The Pirc defence (1.e4 d6, 2.d4 Nf6, 3.Nc3 g6, 4.Nf3 Bg7) is a close relation to the King's Indian defence, the only difference being White has played e4 instead of c4. The game can also transpose to the Pirc if 1.d4 d6 and White chooses 2.e4 instead of 2.c4 but it would be a good idea to have another system available if e4 is not forthcoming. Black's idea is to have White establish a pawn centre with the idea of rapidly undermining it, creating an unbalanced position and exciting play. The Modern defence (1.e4 g6, 2.d4 Bg7) can also lead back to the Pirc, but that's not set in stone. The Modern defence can lead to it's own set of complications for both sides. Overall, it's a good book to have, especially if you're a King's pawn player and have to face Pirc or Modern defence players and you need some general theory and positional understanding.

Good repertoire for open Sicilians - for advanced players.......2002-05-26
This book is probably most useful for players with ELO ratings above 1700.
When I was a Class C player I had a difficult time understanding the Sicilian defence. Black neglects development, and plays a move that immediately weakens d5. Nevertheless I found that a lot of my losses were indeed to Sicilians.
This book helped considerably to fill the void in my knowledge. Nunn gives an overview of each major variation (including some lesser played sidelines) and indicates the corresponding plans for White and Black. He backs up this discussion with game examples as well as some fairly deep analysis.
The book is not perfect. By trying to cover all major variations in one book, Nunn obviously sacrifices depth of analysis in some lines. For example the chapter on the Dragon variation could have used more depth. On the other hand, the Dragon variation alone has been the topic of entire books, so one can't fault Nunn entirely here.
Nunn's writing style is clear and concise and for the most part his analysis is objective. The book is easy to navigate and the binding is fairly sturdy.
The main benefit of studying this book is that one builds confidence in meeting the Sicilian defence. Although detailed analysis is given, inevitably the book will miss some lines that the player will encounter. Thus, the ideas behind the variations and the confidence to play the open sicilian are what I really gleaned from this book.
A good effort by Nunn. Not for beginners though. Additionally, the 3rd edition is out so I'm hoping that the third is as good as the 2nd.
Is Nunn a real person or a computer?.......2002-03-13
This book is the worst of John Nunn. He can churn stuff out that is dry as sawdust. Perhaps the ultimate chess geeks can appreciate this. But I swear a computer could be writing this book. I have tried and tried again to read his books and they bore me into such a stupor that I contemplate giving up chess. On the other hand, this guy is a genius for getting GAMBIT up and running, and his Understanding Chess Move by Move is actually written by a human being! Having said all that, you should realize that I am not commenting at all on the substantive merits of this book--I am just saying, it is strictly technical stuff for hardcore chess geeks. There is NO personality here.

looking for the books that come with Lightwave [6].......2001-08-07
I'm a lightwave, animation student going for my BA Degree in Computer animation. I've been using Lightwave 6.5 and the books that I know about are "Lightwave Magic" which is great for learning the effects and hypervoxels lighting and camera tecniques. Then I've also used "Inside Ligtwave" which is great if you have the program yourself and you have the 3 books/manuals that come with the program. I'm learning the program in a school setting so I don't have the 3 manuals that come with the Lightwave Prgrm. Thats what brought me to this site in the 1st place. Does anybody out there know where a student can get the 3 books that come with Lightwave. 1)- Motion: animate and render. 2)- Shape: Model, Surface & Light. 3)- tips and tutorials There red and orange books with the lightwave logo on the cover & they say "Lightwave [6]" with the titles I mentioned on the covers as well. When you want to use alotta the books out there or the tutorials that come with the books or on line they almost all say. "Well since you have the program then you have the manuals and you know about such-n-such" or "refer to your manuals for the basics on the begining of this tutorial" Well I'm learning the program through a school and I don't have the manuals so I don't know about "such-n-such". Please let me know where I can get these books/manuals. I've heard people say that they've seen them in bookstores. I for one haven't. I askd Newtek for the books and they said NO "we only sell them to people who pay the $2800 for the program to cut down on illicit copies of the program". Whats a student to do? Please help. I'm sure that the book I'm supposed to be reviewing is good to, if you already have the 3 books that I'm asking about. All books and tutorials seem to expect you to have these manuals. they go on from that assumption, %75 of the time. briamor@hotmail.com

A great book acting as an introduction to LightWave 3D!.......1999-01-14
I highly recommend this book to both beginners and pros. Nicely written, with multiple viewpoints, detailed descriptions and how-to's. *A MUST HAVE*
Excellent Book --- Not if your a Beginner.......1998-12-08
I loved this book it taught me vaulable things that most people would over look about the program it's 100% PURE Lightwave and although it covers older versions (not that old either) does not mean those things leanred in the pas cannot be applied to now (that is what 3d animation is about right ????) If you are a Beginner do not get this book period you will probably have question marks floating in front of your eyes plenty of times but if you are a a intermediate or more a advanced user this is the book for you don't judge this book by it's cover.
Old information but still useful.......1998-05-09
This is probably not the best book for Lightwave beginners especially if they are using version 5.5. It is a good book for people who are somewhat familiar with Lightwave 3D and want something a bit different from traditional 3rd party books. I don't use Lightwave but do use Inspire 3D which is a scaled down version of the program. Most of the book has interesting discussions and tutorials that cover ideas I wouldn't have thought of. I found myself saying, "so that's how you do that" a few times. This is a good book for folks using Inspire 3D as most of what is discussed in the text is missing from the manuals (and isn't that a good reason to buy a 3rd party book?) Not for power users or newbies but just right for people who want to get to the next step.
