In High Contrast, Sharon Willis examines the dynamic relationships between racial and sexual difference in Hollywood film from the 1980s and 1990s. Seizing on the way these differences are accentuated, sensationalized, and eroticized on screen—most often with little apparent regard for the political context in which they operate—Willis restores that context through close readings of a range of movies from cinematic blockbusters to the work of the new auteurs, Spike Lee, David Lynch, and Quentin Tarantino.
Capturing the political complexity of these films, Willis argues that race, gender, and sexuality, as they are figured in the fantasy of popular film, do not function separately, but rather inform and determine each other’s meaning. She demonstrates how collective anxieties regarding social difference are mapped onto big budget movies like the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon series, Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, Thelma and Louise, Terminator 2, and others. Analyzing the artistic styles of directors Lynch, Tarantino, and Lee, in such films as Wild at Heart, Pulp Fiction, and Do the Right Thing, she investigates how these interactions of difference are linked to the production of specific authorial styles, and how race functions for each of these directors, particularly in relation to gender identity, erotics, and fantasy.

I own and use this book so often in my Art Therapy groups that this book is flooded with Post It notes. I do adapt most of the activity suggestions to make them fit each client population. The book is flexible and could be applied to youth, teen, or adult/senior populations. It is written and indexed in an easy-to-read manner based on the mode of therapy practiced. The suggestions themselves are general enough however do conveniently elaborate with bullet-marked suggestions for different ways to try out the various activities. So if you think you've worked with clay, perhaps you have not written an acoustic poem about it and then created an environment for the sculpture, etc. Several variations and ideas were new and fresh. Great book for the novice or for the seasoned professional who needs some help getting new ideas sparked up and fueled; a quick, easy (and relatively inexpensive) A.T. reference.

I'm Thai student of MA program in counseling psychology. I'm also a prationer of creative arts therapy. I found that this book is quite useful for the beginner of art therapy. This book offers many activities, exercises and games which you could adapt it in your own work. So I recommend you to have this book as your material.

While this is not the most comprehensive or profound book on art therapy, it is a practical guide for practitioners who need lots of ideas for group activities. How well they work depends on the skills and insight of the group leader, as well as the readiness of the group participants. One of my art therapy students bought this book recently and found it quite useful. For the more advanced practitioner, it might feel a bit too much like a recipe book. I recommend it as one tool in your art therapy toolbox.

This is a great book and very helpful if you practice art therapy as I do. I especially like how she has given special consideration to all kinds of groups, it's not just an abstract manual. Referred to it by a colleague, I would recommend it also.

This book is a revelation!.......2001-04-15
I think any musical theatre or opera performer will relate to the accessible and sympathetic way De Mallet Burgess and Skilbeck communicate their ideas. They have a real insider's grasp of their subject. I've had a go at some of the exercises and I am already becoming aware of aspects of my stage work that I know will benefit. What makes this book so enjoyable is that it is written from the performer's point of view. There is never any attempt to mystify. Quite the opposite - the gauntlet of detailed technical excellence is thrown down without ever forgetting that the ultimate aim is to put on a jolly good show; probably underfunded; possibly underrehearsed but with heart and soul. Excellent!

Excellent Book for Amature/Experienced Instrument Builder.......2003-03-25
When I was a child, my father bought me this book for my birthday. As a composer and percussionist, it is still one of my most cherished music-related books. It would make a great coffee table book for anyone who wants something truly out of the ordinary.
I think it would also be useful for teaching kids, and I once used it for a summer class for kids where they built some of the simpler instruments in the book such as the Funnelodeon and Copper Maracas. They also built Whirly Tubes out of long pieces of light blue swimming pool tubing. The kids had a great time and some even said it was their favorite class. I think this book would be useful for music teachers who teach children and want to try something fun.
Many of the instruments in this book can be built using items found at hardware stores. Many of the more complex instruments are reminiscent of instruments built by the American composer Harry Partch and are also similar to discontinued (yet amazing!) instruments made by the J. C. Deagan company at the beginning of the twentieth century.
This book would make a great gift for anyone curious about different tunings and for someone who wants to try them out on an acoustic instruments, for percussionists, composers, wind players, string players, or even retired folks who have a little extra time and like working with their hands. There are mostly percussion instruments, but also some stringed and wind instruments as well. The directions, photos and diagrams are clear, and overall, this book is just a lot of fun to have around.

A very useful and practical handbook for beginning instrument builders such as I. The book is organized into six sections; wood, wood and metal, metal, skin, plastic, and glass. Mostly percussion designs, but also includes a few simple string instruments and an organ pipe. Instructions and designs for 50 instruments, some traditional but mostly original variations by the authors. Also includes frequency charts, some discussion of just intonation, a great bibliography for further reading and a list of suppliers for things like gourds and bamboo.

One of the most popular features of National Public Radio's Weekend Edition Sunday broadcasts have been the seven minutes of puzzling with puzzlemaster Will Shortz. I like the variety of puzzles in this book...as opposed to all crossword,etc. One has to figure out the rule before solving the puzzle.
Puzzles, But No Tricks.......2004-01-02
If you listen to Will Shortz on Sunday's Weekend Edition, you know what kind of puzzles are in this volume. Half the puzzles are of the type that he conducts with a call-in listener. This usually involves a series of word puzzles with short answers you can come up with on the spot. The other half of the puzzles in The Puzzlemaster Presents are of the sort that he leaves us with to solve during the week. They are harder and have one correct answer.
The first type of puzzle is fun, but the second type is my favorite because you usually have to do these in your head. I like to keep one or two in mind for occasions like being stuck in traffic or standing in line. They really make the time fly and you don't need pencil and paper. I find they are also great if you have trouble getting to sleep. Concentrating on a tricky word puzzle or arithmetic calculation sure keeps your mind from wandering all over the place.
And don't look for clever tricks with these puzzles. One thing about Will Shortz is that even though he loves puzzles, he is scrupulously fair. He gives you all the information you will need to solve each problem.

As a fan of Will Shortz's other puzzle books I was eager to try the puzzles in this volume. There is a good variety ranging from fairly easy to extremely challenging puzzles. The topics are varied with both puzzles and answers presented in an easy to use format. Many puzzle books do not provide adequate space to properly fill in your answers but this book does.

Will Shortz has delighted puzzle lovers world-wide for years. This collection is another excellent offering from the man who has dedicated his life to the pleasure of solving puzzles.If you have neither listened to Will's radio show nor purchased this book,you're missing out on a great opportunity to have a good deal of challenging fun. I still get a kick ( and feel honored) when Will features one of my puzzles on his show because of the way he makes it come to life with his enthusiasm. If you don't know by now, Will Shortz is the master of wordplay. Do yourself, friends, and family a favor. Get this book for hours of good,clean-cut fun and then tune in his show on NPR for more.

this book is amazing! i teach middle school (6-7-8) english, and i use these puzzles with my students. they can't get enough! for any fans of the npr sunday morning puzzle, this book is a must.
