5 out of 5 stars Personal, readable; a must for anybody who wants to understand India .......2007-04-05

A Princess Remembers is a terrific book for anybody who wants to understand India--what it was, what it is, and how it has made the very bumpy journey from then to now. Not only does it give a very good glimpse of the system of Maharahas that once ran the country, but because Gayatri Devi served in the Indian Parliament, it provides a fascinating window on the triumphs and pitfalls of an emerging democracy. The Maharani has lived a life that reaches from the not-so-old days of Purdah--when a princess was not free to show her face in public when men were present--through the jet-set world of a more modern, educated royalty, to the productive (and not-so-productive) era of state and world politics. Her life reflects, from a high mirror, the tremendously complicated life of her beloved state of Jaipur and her country, and as such, it definitely deserves to be read. But her story also explains much for those of us who have traveled to India and marveled at the forts and the grand palace hotels, and even, perhaps, met scions of the old ruling families. The picture of India that a traveler forms is not truly coherent without literature about the Maharajas. This book provides a rare, personal, readable, non-scholarly source, a vital piece of the enormously complex puzzle that is today's India.

5 out of 5 stars Good for insights on pre-independance Indian royals.......2005-08-31

This book gives a detailed picture of personal life of Maharani Gayatri Devi. Kind of gave me more thoughts on how the India could have evolved had it been not given to the hands of Nehru(subsequently to Indira Gandhi). The book has details of early childhood, adolecense, after marriage and post independance aspects of the life of Gayatri Devi.

I think the book needs a updated version, with one or 2 chapters dedicated towards her life in 80's and 1990's. This is one of the best auto-biographies I have ever read.

A must read for some one interested in Indian history just before and after independance; also for folks interested in dwelling into royal lifestyles.

2 out of 5 stars Lifestyles of the Indian rich n famous.......2005-04-05

I read this book over a span of 2 days, which leads me to conclude that the prose and sequencing are comparable to any best seller fiction. For a person born in independet India, it was fascinating to read about the jet setting lifestyles of the royals 80 years ago. The author has a selective memory and chooses to speak about the non-controversial aspects of royal living, which was immensely enjoyable. However I wish she had devoted some more pages on the cultural differences between Cooch Behar & Jaipur, for instance what language did she use to communicate with her husband , his other wives....english?? How did she adjust to the lifestyle in post independence India.

4 out of 5 stars a princess remembers.......2003-02-14

it is an amazing book if u want to have an insight to the lives of our so called indian royalty...a life full of nothing but parties and balls ... going to france for shopping the sarees...amazing..especially for a woman who was born in the times when the whole country was struggling against the britishers...and all the country was involved except theses so called royalty who are interested in showing off their close relations with the british..i am amazed when they claim their love for the country yet they didn't do anything to make this country independent..all they are lamenting is their loss of titles when millions lost their lives ...complete apathy and lack of feeling for the land they were born in...it is eye opening.. a must read book

3 out of 5 stars True Life Fairy Tale.......2002-10-04

This story is enjoyable because it's her real life and it opens up a priveledged world most of us never get to see. It's pleasure reading and it's escape reading. There is nothing ground breaking or earth shattering here but maybe that's the point. It's an open look at a life that didn't turn out exactly as expected but was lived with joy and appreciation. You get to experience her grace and her zest. I liked it, I've even kept my copy but I doubt I'll be pulling it out to read again any time soon.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2001-04-20

I have read many books about the Royal lives from various parts of the world. This book by "Gayatri Devi" is exquisite and her narration simply makes the book premier of them all. The details and the wonderful experiences amazed me. Her life has so much vitality and enthusiasm. Its a book by someone with bright spirit and great soul.

5 out of 5 stars What a great work of art........2000-09-23

I have always been interested in the history of Princely India because I find the lives and times of the great Maharajas of India very fascinating. I found the first edition of this great book at an Indian book store in New Jersey. I was very ecstatic about my discovery since one can hardly find books about the history of Princely India in the States. This is the perfect way to find out what it was like during the time when the Maharajas ruled India. Her Royal Highness, the Maharani Gayatri Devi has done a superb job in writing this book. Her writing makes it seem as if we are there in Jaipur when they welcomed Her at the Rambhagh Palace, and we feel the emotions she might have felt when Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi imprisoned her on false charges. This book is easy to follow and flows very nicely from one chapter to the next, and from one situation to the other. The English used in this book is not too complex either, and has many great pictures so that one can feel as if they are right there when She wins the elections and welcomes Jackie Kennedy at the City Palace. This book is a must read for all people who are interested in Princely India, or interested in famous influential women. It is a must read for people who like to read a romantic story, but it is a must read for people who like to read and gain new knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Old and new India as seen from the eyes of a princess.......2002-03-31

It is a view of India's living conditions, politics, social life and is also a love story. It begins when she is a little girl and the daughter of a prince and ends when she is an old woman. She catches the eye of one of her beautiful mother's "friends", the prince of Jaipur, when she is about 12. Later she becomes his third wife but the only one not an arranged marriage. She travels the world with her husband and does not have to live in purdah as the other two do. She is an celebrated beauty who later goes into politics and even serves time in jail for disagreeing with the government. It transitions India from the old days of the principalities to the democratic India of today. I was in India when I read this book. Several of her husbands palaces are open to the public, including one which is now a luxury palace hotel. We stayed there and experienced a little of the old India of the royals with the laviously decked out elephants (which you could ride), tea in the garden, musicans, shops and the elegant public rooms. Devi still lived there in a house on the grounds. I would recommend this book to anyone who plans to visit or has visited India. It's easy reading and very interesting.

                1 out of 5 stars Incorrect.......2006-11-04

All the history is interesting, but that's about it. All the tabs are slightly wrong. They sound close, but not quite right. It seems to me that this book is for beginners as everything is tabbed to be easier than the real way, which is really noticable in the solos, where in some cases every other note is left out just to make it more playable. All right for beginners, but if you really want to play KISS songs, don't get this.

As I'm fond of telling whoever will listen, I never touched alcohol until I went to seminary. Cigars are an even more recently acquired vice. My older brother got me into Macanudos, and since then I've enjoyed Avos, Buteras, and Arturo Fuentes. I'm even a regular at a Portland cigar bar, where I unwind after a long workweek with tawny port, long stogie, and a good book. I've learned enough about cigars to be dangerous, so I wanted a more formal knowledge base about them. Therefore, I decided to pick up this guide.

"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars" is a fine introduction to the cigar world. Tad Gage has a deep affection for cigars, and he writes in a clear, enthusiastic manner about them. He explains the different types of cigars, the procedure for smoking one, and proper storage. In addition to this practical advice, Mr. Gage reveals the history of cigars, how they are made, and the reality behind the whole Cuban tobacco mystique. He even devotes a chapter to pipe smoking for those so inclined. At the book's end is a rating list of many common brands, along with a mild to full-bodied flavor chart. So far Mr. Gage's tastes have mirrored my own, so I look forward to trying more of his favorites (such as Davidoff and Fuente Fuente OpusX).

I understand that there's a backlash towards tobacco, and one should count the cost before indulging. But life is short, and certain pleasures in moderation aren't a bad thing. It's a shame that my home state (Washington) has banned smoking in public places. I patronized a number of Seattle's cigar bars back in the day, and I miss them. But at least Oregon hasn't jumped on the prohibition bandwagon. At any rate, if you are interested in becoming a cigar aficionado, then start with "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars." Long ashes to you!

The only thing I didn't like is when he talks about Cuban cigars. For me they are still the best in the world.

and probably somethings that you could care less about. This book is quite informative for the novice. The information is presented to simple fashion for easy reading. Although the author expresses opinions at times, he makes sure that he alerts you that they are his subjective opinions - which allows you to take it or leave it. Some of the information was over my head but I am a novice. It's the type of book that I would pick-up and read again after having more personal experiences with cigar smoking.

With some repetition this book covers all the basics and then some. I certainly can't think of what they left out but then I'm an idiot. Don't be afraid to skip sections that don't interest you. The layout of the book, in outline form, makes it easy to do this.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Novice.......2007-06-12

I've smoked cigars in the past, even expensive ones. But, similar to my journey into wine, I was too shy to walk into a fine cigar store and ask what I thought were stupid questions about size, shape, and even the circumference of a cigar. I didn't know what made a smoke mild or robust, or why I seemed to prefer to the milder ones. In part, its a matter of taste, but as you read this book, you also learn there's a standard for most cigars, and then one can experiment with more robust or even exotic blends. After reading the book I have a great idea of what I want to look for going forward--the country, the style, the length and ring size, and what type of tobacco and wrapper will provide the taste I'm looking for. I've also learned what to pay for a good cigar, and when (and when not to!) splurge for those more expensive smokes.

As Tad Gage explains, everyone starts out in life as a cigar idiot. But not everyone need remain so. His extremely portable introduction to the cigar-smoking life invites one to experiment with and enjoy the pleasures of cigars, while providing the knowledge wherewithal to do so. He teaches cigar terminology and cigar lingo, so you too can talk with confidence about bands, bales, binders, and bunchers, cutters, cohibas, and cigarillos. He tells you how to get started, what brands to try, and what you might expect to pay. He introduces cigar paraphernalia, and explains which items you need and what can be substituted for them in the meantime. Gage describes the process of cigar making, gives the lowdown on humidors, vaults, and aging (of cigars, that is), then gets into cigar rating, detailing the main criteria and jargon of taste, appearance, and draw, then scoring and grading various smokes and brands, with separate chapters for price categories. With an appendix of great smokes and best buys, a glossary of all things cigar-related, and a comprehensive index, Gage's guide is a readable and entertaining means to launching one's cigar-smoking career and improving the quality of one's cigar-smoking experience. --Stephanie Gold

Graham Norton's unique blend of camp comedy, cosy chattiness, and brilliant bitchiness has earned him a place in the nation's hearts. But not too much is known about Graham Norton's private life, and so biographer and journalist Alison Bowyer has travelled to his native Ireland and talked to friends and relatives about this irrepressibly likeable man.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good read, but limited.......2003-08-05

There is not yet any autobiography of Graham Norton, nor any authorised biography. This book is limited by the fact that it was not written in co-operation with its author. This does not mean it is critical of him, quite the reverse, it is almost hagiographic. However it does give us a clear picture of the man and his life story. The sources are limited - the latter part of his career is documented from press cuttings and photo's, whereas the early part of his life is cobbled together from interviews with a very small number of friends and other sources. It is usually possible to tell where every quote originates (for example the description of Norton's home town Bandon as a lush and green can only have come from the Bandon tourist office, credited at the front of the book). The book does benefit from candid interviews with two of Graham's former boyfriends, and it is to Norton's credit that he is held in high esteem by these peopele even after the break-up of these relationships. There are quite a few basic grammatical errors, (which could be considered the editor's fault rather than Bowyer's), and Bandon Grammar School is referred to as a Grammer school. Careless mistakes aside, this is very easy to read and gives a few interesting insights into the private life of this very public man.
