Book Description
The Machinima approach to creating movies promises to revolutionize the computer animation industry and this book will serve as the industry bible for emerging filmmakers. It expertly covers the very latest technology in filmmaking, from the history of Machinima, who the major players are, and where the Machinima movement is going. Conventional filmmakers are quickly adopting this medium as a much easier and economical way to produce animation films. This book contains a wealth of tips, tricks, and solid techniques to creating your own Machinima films from some of the best creative minds in the industry. Numerous hands-on projects are provided to show readers how to expertly create, edit, and view their own films. Some of the hot topics covered include developing actors, preparing sets, incorporating audio, adding special audio and visual effects, using the best post production techniques, using the best game engines, and much more.

Unique and informative.......2004-11-09
This is well written walkthrough of filmmaking with game engines like Quake and Unreal. It starts with a basic introduction to the field. He then goes into installing and using the Machinimation application that you will use to choreograph your film.
The book then follows the path of increasing complexity, starting with moving lights around, then adding actors, animating the actors, controlling the characters and adding visual effects. He then continues all the way through to capturing the video and audio and completing the filmmaking process.
One of the best chapters is the section of cinematography where the author strays from the introductory form to give practical advice about how to make a better film. The chapter on character development is also excellent, showing the development of a character from rough sketches to a full three dimensional model.
I enjoyed this book. It was a well written introduction to a whole new field of artistic expression. Definitely a must buy for those interested in the field. Those who are curious may want to browse it, but won't find enough outside of the strict walkthrough to make it worth the price.
All Aboard!!.......2004-10-08
Marino does a superb job of detailing Machinima's short history, hitting on the high points in its growth from a spark to a major media storm banging down on mainstream media's door.
3D Game-Based Film Making covers most of the basics in the creation of a machinima film while at the same time informing the reader of the many ways that machinima and conventional filming share some of the same techniques and history but also showing the power that machinima welds that sets it apart.
The tutorials in the book are geared for people just getting their feet wet in this vast new medium. Marino takes a slow but meaningful pace so that readers can "walk through" the lessons and have a chance to review the steps they have just taken without getting lost in the process.
The book does have it's shortfalls but I guess this is due to the world of machinima being so vast. Having some of the tutorials examples on the disc would have been nice to have something to compare you work to. Also having some machinima films to watch so there can be some visual reinforcement of what you are trying to create but I suspect it was due to legal issues that they could not be included.
Overall well worth the price for the beginner who is just getting into the medium. The amount of information is staggering but when you go through it, it enriches the journey of discovery into this brave new world.
Will save beginners from countless Google searches.......2004-09-30
I heard of machinima about a week ago in the Economist magazine which also featured comments from Paul Marino, this book's author. A week later and I've got the book, but I'm a little let down but what the book has added to my knowledge.
I'd say someone who has only heard of machinima and hasn't designed their own level in a 3D game would get tons of gems from this book. Whereas poor me with a week's worth of Google searches looking for tutorials on UnrealEd 3.0 and so forth - well I only got enough information to round out my status as a serious machinima beginner.
In fairness, however, after a couple of hours with the book I was able to get the finishing touches I was looking for and successfully burned my first machinima movie to DVD. So it was a small boost I got but a very welcome one (the boost included my spending $29 for the full version of Fraps). So, yeah it will give you the tools in one place to get a finished product.
I am disappointed that Marino ends the book with a tutorial on character modeling. The tutorial is well-written but by its end you'll be looking at a cute character cast in concrete (no words on skinning or rigging, etc). Worse this character will be stranded in a program called Silo (by the way blender from blender.org seems just as good and is cross-platform and a free download) with no hint of the challenge of getting this spaceman into a 3D level designer.
The machinima community would be better served with a tutorial on how to get custom sounds and meshes into UnrealEd et al, and how to do lipsynching.
In short too much time spent teaching you how to use tools (tools generally come with their own instructions and tutorials anyway).
I was also disappointed to find no samples of machinima movies on the cd. These are such a pig to download after all. How about including one and then some kind of analysis about what makes that one sample special.
The book is called the Art of Machinima but it seems more like the Activity of Futzing with Tools.
A guidebook for anyone who wants to make a 3D animated film.......2004-09-08

Get an early start.......2004-08-04
Did any of you go to various Internet World conventions in the 1990s? Where VRML companies extolled its virtues and described how it was the future. Well, VRML was ahead of its hardware. Its successor appears to be Machinima.
Marino gives a nice explanation of its merits. The convergence of 3 approaches. Traditional filmmaking. Animation. And the 3D game techniques spawned by Quake. The text has enough examples to let you get started as your own film director, given a typical PC made in 2004 as your hardware platform.
It may indeed be as Marino suggests. That we are lucky to be present at the start of an entirely new era of artistic creativity. One that is very democratic. For a minimal outlay of capital, you can script and play out your own film. Essentially limited only by your own ability. The equivalent of music synthesisers that let anyone be a composer.
The illustrations in this book also suggest that these are early years. The relatively low resolution of the images points to room for further advances in resolution and rendering. Also, while the book shows a panoply of things you can do in Machinima, undoubtedly more powerful editing capabilities will emerge later. Which may be all to the good for you. Plenty of room for you to help bring about these advances.

With three steamy books by the women in Elvis's life already published (1997's Elvis: In the Twilight of Memory by June Juanico; Priscilla Beaulieu Presley's 1991 tell-all, Elvis and Me; and Joyce Bova's Don't Ask Forever: My Love Affair with Elvis), can the world absorb another? Suzanne Finstad, author of Child Bride: The Untold Story of Priscilla Beaulieu Presley, certainly hopes so.
With as many darkly intriguing details as the chambers of Graceland, Finstad--journalist, lawyer, and author of two true-crime books--defends her own theories on the complexity and grit of the former Mrs. Presley. Why did she conspire with her mother to keep her paternity a secret? How old was she when she took up with the King? Suzanne Finstad treats us to her own exhaustively researched version of the facts.
Book Description
The myth-shattering account of the most famous and most taboo love story in rock-and-roll history
Child Bride reveals the hidden story of rock icon Elvis Presley’s love affair with fourteen-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu, the ninth-grader he wooed as a G.I. in Germany and cloistered at Graceland before marrying her to fulfill a promise to her starstruck parents. Award-winning biographer Suzanne Finstad perceptively pieces together the clues from candid interviews with all the Presley intimates—including Priscilla herself, along with hundreds of sources who have never before spoken publicly—to uncover the surprising truths behind the legend of Elvis and Priscilla, a tumultuous tale of sexual attraction and obsession, heartbreak and loss.
Child Bride, the only major biography of Priscilla Beaulieu Presley, unveils the controversial child-woman who evolved from a lonely and sexually precocious teenager kept by the King of Rock and Roll into a shrewd businesswoman in control of the multimillion-dollar Elvis Presley empire, a rags-to-riches saga of secrets and betrayals that began when Priscilla was only three years old.

I'll never trust Finstad again.......2007-08-17
I am a Finstad fan. I have enjoyed her other books but am questioning everything she has professed as truth since reading this book. I had to quit reading it because it is so caustic. I do not care who first suggested that Priscilla meet Elvis and I don't want to read ten pages on speculation of the event! Ms. Finstad has found a good way to make herself appear to be not only a mean-spirited writer, but a complete idiot. She alludes to the fact that Priscilla might have been molested by an alcoholic father. Priscilla's behavior coincides with many girls who are molested at a young age, including mine. However, her speculation concerning Priscilla's motives proves that she knows not of what she speaks. Yes, girls who are molested tend to be a bit promiscuous. In my case, I "numbed out" when with boys and hardly remember some of the things I did. That was a coping mechanism I learned at an early age. The memories of my childhood and teen years and even my first marriage are so full of holes that I don't remember half of what happened. I have a good childhood friend that plugs in those holes with information the best she can. Sometimes I am very surprised at an event she tells me about that I have no memory of. Also the trauma of growing up in an alcoholic, military-type home screws with your head. Having a promiscuous boyfriend and husband is very degrading and causes crazy thoughts and patterns. I am 60 years old and am just getting my life straight after living much of my life as Priscilla did. I did not have a famous husband so I can only imagine what a 14 year old child would think of being dated by such a famous man. Teen agers see things so black and white and are so idealistic. It must have been horrible for him to tell her he loved her and then to see articles in the papers about all his affairs. Still, she obviously loved him and wanted to keep him. On the other hand, she must have thought it all a dream and continued to date others in the absence of his calls and commitment. Her parents obviously acted irresponsibly and were clearly "star struck." People who are star struck try not to believe that that star would do anything untoward. Look at the idiot parents who let their children spend the night with Michael Jackson, even after all the allegations against him. Priscilla's parents were irresponsible and naive.
Currie Grant sounds like a dispicable person but is portrayed as the perveyor of all truth. He is an admitted adulterer and child rapist. As Priscilla was only 14, it is known as rape, whether she consented or not. He was the adult and bears all the responsibility. Finstad proposes that this characterless man speaks the complete truth. Finstad is either naive or is willingly being dupped.
Whatever the circumstances, which we will never really know, Ms. Finstad has lost my respect because she is so hung up on trashing Priscilla that she loses her audience. She tries to turn Priscilla into a monster. She dwells on the most insignificant, idiotic things that few people are interested in if they pick up this book. The tone of the book is mean and hateful. Her information comes from others who seem to want us to think they knew the people involved intimately but are identified as a "classmate" or a "friend of a friend". How insightful can those people be, looking from the outside, speculating on someone they probably barely knew, if at all, and deciding what their behavior and motives were based on gossip and inuendo? I think this book is a disaster.
Priscilla is the reason for Elvis's doom........2006-07-26
After all these years, I still havent reached peace with untimely loss of Elvis. Priscilla was the reason and responsible for Elvis's doom.
Since Priscilla walked out of Elvis at hight of his career for other man who was supposedly Elvis's friend. What a betrayal, cruel and nasty bitch. How could she go on like nothing happened, it's just a life? Hello? Publicly humiliating Elvis was a serious crime. This book only proved that how Priscilla was wrong for Elvis. She still acts as merry widow Mrs. presly that I totally oppose. She was divorced and shouldn't carry his name. It's disturbing to know this sexually active sordid woman to run Elvis estate.
I think Lisa Marie still hasn't reached her peace with loss of her father. Why she appear angry to this day?
At least this book by Ms Finstad did justce and revenge for us.
Fair Treatment by Finstad.......2006-07-11
Suzanne Finstad did exhaustive research for this book as evidenced in the 16 pages of "Sources" listed at the end of her book. I disagree with people who have said the book was malicious or vindictive of Priscilla Presley. Finstad paints the picture of a "Survivor" -- a little girl who had alot of fight and drive and ambition in her. Finstad's various attempts to analyze Priscilla's behavior come off as perhaps amateurish, but all in all, they ring true. Priscilla is described as having the intelligence and assertiveness of something like a great white shark, but it is not described as a negative characteristic in her. Her life hasn't always been pretty, but by the time the reader nears the end of the book, you almost come to the belief that Priscilla Presley probably DESERVES every ounce of happiness she now enjoys. Her life has never been easy, despite her wealth and fame.
WOW.......2006-06-29
Before I start off on my review on this book, I want to let it be known how much I love Elvis Presley. So anything that I can read on him is imperative to me.
I read Elvis and Me about a year ago, and I had some very mixed feelings about the book. I had some unanswered questions that I feel this book got to the root of.
I try not to pass judgment on people, and I thought before I even started to read this book that it would be a smear campaign. I was wrong. I believe this book got to the "root" of a lot of questions that people have been asking for a very long time.
Reading some of the reviews on here I would like to "touch" on the Currie Grant topic. I wonder if most people know anything ab out the military. If she told her parents she was raped by this man, and Priscilla's father was a captain, he would have been under the brig--still. So do I believe he raped her. Not at all. As a matter of fact, I dont believe anything she says about him. I believe that as a military man at his age, yes he was nasty, but it happens all the time. These young girls go on base and get themselves into all sorts of trouble. Now do I think what happened (in his version of the story) is sad? Yes! I think she really wanted to meet Elvis and would do just about anything to get there. He even says he was wrong, but wrong doesnt mean it didn't happen.
I think Priscilla was very grown for her age. I think she wanted to be something, groomed into something she was not. I actually feel kind of sorry for her. I think her mother pushed her, and I believe she pushed herself. She pushed herself into something she wasn't ready for.
As to the Author, Mrs. Finstad, I think she did a wonderful job researching this project. She went to a lot of different people and I feel that everyone can't be wrong. Her school friends seem to have the same opinion of her--albiet not so "fluffy" it is their opinion.
With books such as these you have to realize that the point of view you are reading are coming from people who are allowed to feel that way. If Priscilla doesnt remember things that way so be it. However you have to wonder a couple of things. One, Why would anyone's parents agree to let their 14 year old daughter go out with a grown man (Mr. Grant) in the first place? Second, why would they let thier 14 year old daughter go to the house of a known sex idol without supervision? These questions beg one to ask, did they have this thing planned for a while? I think the author answers all these questions in the book and in reality, all her answers make sense.
One last thing before I close, why would they not allow her to know about her real father as well as his family? I think they should be bitter. They did nothing wrong. They had a right to know and love a member of their family.
I think this is a must read. If nothing more then to get the other side of the story.
WHAT TOTAL GARBAGE.......2006-03-28
Can you say "jealous"? The author obviously has some major issues with Priscilla and she breaks the first rule of any good reporter: be neutral and relay the facts. Her tirade against Priscilla is remanicant of Glenn Close's character in Fatal Attraction----in other words a total wingnut.
Currie Grant claims that he slept with Priscilla when she was 14 years old. Uh, if this is true, then why hasn't he been charged as a pedophile? He sounds like a pig! (Apparently, he's the same creep that Priscilla referred to as "Kurt" in her book----the one who tried to rape her). And Priscilla slept with Elvis on their second date? Give me a break. How is it that she never got pregnant sleeping with all these men? Gee, I guess they were all considerate and used condoms (as I roll my eyes).
The author then interviews Michael Edwards, another loser with an axe to grind against Priscilla (she dumped him after putting up with his drinking, drugs and screwing around on her for 7 years). Ya, gee, he sounds like he's a real reliable source.
Ms. Finstad should seriously consider changing careers. She comes across as an angry, jealous 12 year old over a woman she doesn't even know and she looks quite pathetic in her attempt to destroy Priscilla's reputation.
While I enjoyed Elvis' music, I'm no hardcore fan and it makes no difference to me whether or not Priscilla was a virgin on her wedding night. But I do think it worth noting that Priscilla sued Currie Grant in court over this book AND WON.

The best puzzle book ever!.......2006-02-15
This book will keep you entertained for days! Besides the Sudoku puzzles, you will greatly enjoy the Bridges (also known as Hashi) and Slitherlink. I've been searching everywhere for more Slitherlink puzzles because they are fantastic! Buy this book, you will not be dissapointed!
Sudoku, Bridges, and Slitherlink.......2005-12-08
There are a lot of Su Doku book on the market but most of them are aimed at the beginner and novice. I have had a hard time finding harder puzzles. This book has some.
Most of this book is taken up with the familiar 9X9 grid su doku puzzles but there are two other types of puzzles as well. Second is a puzzle called bridges. Numbered circles represent islands and the number is the number of bridges that connect tit to surrounding island. Like su doku, a simple set of rules drives the logic for finding the unique solution. The final puzzle is slitherlink. A matrix has numbers that represent how many of the sides of its cell will be filled in. The object is to satisfy all of the numbers and complete a continuous loop.
A good book if you are looking for something a little different or just want puzzles that are a little more challenging than what most of the other books are offering.
From the Board Games Editor at BellaOnline.com.......2005-12-05
This book is for serious sudoku-ers only! The puzzles are more difficult than those you'd expect from the sudoku books already on the market, but definitely as much, if not more, fun!
If you're looking for a gift for your favorite puzzle fan, grab this book. It's pretty new, so chances are, they won't have it.

I WANT MORE!!!.......2007-07-08
I got my dad hooked on this first, then I started SuDoku. I bought both of us this book & I just finished it & I NEED more. I have been looking on line to order something like this book but have not found what I am looking for just yet. This is by far, the best book out there. Bring on Volume 4!!!
Pleasingly challenging puzzles.......2006-12-10
This is the best book of harder sudoku that I've seen. The puzzles appear to be hand-created, unlike the randomly created junk found in some other books. In many difficult puzzles, the solver is reduced to penciling in possibles fairly early on, then searching through lots of tiny numbers for clues. In this book that's rarely necessary (and least in Levels 1-4, which is as far as I've gotten.) The book has a nice small format, and the paper is very white and of excellent quality. All in all, highly satisfactory!
Finally...a really challenging Su Doku puzzle book!.......2006-07-11
Level 1 of this book is like level 5 on the Vol 1 book of the same title. I can only solve about half of the level 5s in this book. These puzzles are excellent for those who have mastered the medium and hard level puzzles in most newspapers. But be warned, these are hard compared to vol. 1. I can't wait for the next advanced one. I may even buy a second copy of Vol. 3 since I don't remember the answers anyway!
Book Description

Good advice and techniques for advanced Sudoko player.......2007-01-25
This book provides lots of discussion, ideas, and techniques for the advanced Sudoku player bored with "difficult" puzzles in the newspapers and wanting to move beyond the simplest advanced techniques such as X-wing and Swordfish. The discussion of techniques differs from the typical approaches you'll find on the web, and is more general. Lots of practice puzzles along the way to help turn theory into useful technique. Also, lots of encouragement for players who rely too much on penciling in.

From the supplier: The television ads for Dianne Feinstein's successful political campaigns used non-traditional coding to redefine conceptualizations of candidate image. Rather than confront masculinized entailments, the ads provided new interpretations of toughness, competency, leadership and capability. These strategies may help other women candidates depending on individual application.
