An untypical love story.......2002-09-24
These were unusual background to develop a romantic story. It was refreshing from those rich and powerful hero, smart and brave but helpless heroine. This was no fairytale. But the author managed to weave a story with strong character development. It was more than a love story, more a family story.
Sometime I found the story a tart too slow but the unfolding events were necessary to develop the story and characters: Matt's injury and subsequent recovery under Caroline's care helped to dispell distrust, ignite passions and reveal secrets; Daniel's kiss awakened the feelings, Caroline's kidnap and rescue provided the much needed solitude and privacy for them; and the rescue of Caroline from the fire. Almost all characters emerged stronger and closer from these events.

This Side of Heaven: Race, Ethnicity, and Christian Faith

Book Description
In recent years Christian scholars have become increasingly aware of their responsibility to recognize and respond to the challenges posed by ethnic and racial diversity. Similarly, historically white Christian colleges, universities, seminaries and congregations are struggling to transform themselves into communities that are welcoming to minorities and sensitive to their needs. This collection of all-new essays is meant to enable those who are engaged in these initiatives to understand the historical linkage of race, ethnicity and Christianity and to explore the ways in which constructive change can be achieved. The volume is the product of a long-term study funded by the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology. In the course of this study it emerged that many Christian institutions now offer courses on race and ethnicity, but that there is very little relevant literature written from the standpoint of rigorous Christian scholarship. This book is intended to fill that gap. The authors address such questions as: What has been the history of Christian churches and leaders in relation to slavery, segregation, and apartheid? Which biblical texts and doctrines have historically been employed on behalf of racial projects, and which are relevant to the racial and ethnic crises of our day? How have religious leaders constructively engaged such crises? How do congregations shape the values, civic commitments, understandings and sensitivities of their membership? How can local congregations be sites for racial reconciliation and justice initiatives? Are there positive models for how churches and other religious institutions have helped to bring healing to racial and ethnic tensions and divides? How might Christians in the professions work to bring justice to business, education, government, and other areas of society? When good intentions fail to accomplish desired ends, how do we analyze what went wrong? Written by an interracial and interethnic team of scholars representing diverse disciplines, this book will meet a pressing need and set a new standard for the discussion of race and ethnicity in the Christian context.

This Side of Heaven: Determining the Donnelly Murders, 1880
Norman N. Feltes Manufacturer: University of Toronto Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0802044867 |
Book Description
What personal vendetta motivated a group of men, labelling themselves a Vigilance Society, to enter the Donnelly farmhouse in southwestern Ontario on that night in February 1880 and brutally bludgeon the family to death? According to the author, this is the wrong question to ask. In This Side of Heaven, a phrase he takes from the verse on the Donnelly family gravestone, Norman Feltes suggests that this legendary event cannot be fully understood through conventional narrative, but only as the historical product of the diverse economic, socio-political, and ideological conditions that underlay Biddulph Township during the late nineteenth century.
Factors such as the way the region was surveyed and settled, the emerging pattern of its canal and railroads in competition with those of the United States, its distinctive wheat trade, and the patriarchal gender relations in its villages and towns, all converged in a unique set of forces that 'overdetermined' both of the murders and the trials at which the vigilantes were acquitted. Using a rigorous marxist structuralist methodology, the book draws the reader into a compelling web of economic, social, and geographical structures, showing how human actions, sometimes murderous, arise from forces larger than the individual.

Book Description
On This Side of Heaven is the first in the series of Heavenly Novels(tm), and poignantly details the story of a community, a small church, and one man's secret desire for power, wealth, and women.Just five years before mandatory retirement, Reverend Bob Buck finds himself serving in a washed up old country church- the result of a career that has been tarnished. Bitter about his new appointment, Buck has decided not to let his career end this way, and employs everything in his power, including God, to prove his worth and gain a position of power.
Buck's true character gradually begins to reveal itself through greed and egotism - all the while insisting his actions are motivated by an effort to express God's love. Unfortunately, the hiring of young associate pastor Ben Montague threatens to ruin Buck's well-laid plan. This sets in motion a chain of events that force Buck's past and present to collide, as he learns a truth about the young associate pastor that rocks his world.
A heartfelt story, On This Side of Heaven forces the reader to remove his rose colored glasses and see the ugly side of organized religion. It shows the human side of church, while embracing the reverence. By addressing the fine balance between godliness and self-righteousness, On This Side of Heaven teaches the lesson that God is in the church, but the church is not God.

Digital Babylon: How the Geeks, the Suits, and the Ponytails Fought to Bring Hollywood to the Internet
John Geirland , and Eva Sonesh-Keder Manufacturer: Arcade Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1559704837 |
Book Description
In the mid-nineties, technology entrepreneurs and media pundits believed that the Internet was like television circa 1948: poised to burst forth as the next powerful entertainment medium. Billions of dollars and a string of wrecked companies and careers later, that vision remains frustratingly unfulfilled. Taking the first penetrating look at the new media industry from the human perspective, Digital Babylon describes how the convergence of entertainment, media, and computer worlds went off track.Customer Reviews:
Real insight worth reading.......1999-10-16
Interesting Read.......1999-09-17
That being said, I do feel that the book could have had more depth. Being there, I can attest to the fact that some of the issues were glossed over and approached in a somewhat naive manner.
Despite my critisism I do recommend giving it a read. For those who were not a part of the industry it is an interesting look into this fast paced world and even for those who were part of the industry I think it puts some of the personalities into context.
As for the disgruntaled former Asylum employee . . . well like the others have already said, Scott treated people fairly. The fact that your review of the book turned into a personal attack on the people in it probably says a lot about why you have these feelings in the first place.
Zakarin's character isn't the issue here........1999-09-14
Digital Bablyon dawdles on the "glory" days of The Spot, dithers nervously over the transitional period -- "Will Scott get a new job? Oh, god, WILL HE???" -- then lovingly fails to describe the early days at the Asylum, preferring personalities to strategies and eulogy to technology.
Then it talks about launch, then it mentions in passing that EA was squandering $400,000 a month, then -- zip! -- everyone's fired. And the authors have the colossal naivete to sound shocked about it.
On the plus side, this is a really nice book to read for anyone who personally likes Scott, Troy, Rich, Charlie Fink or Brandon Tartikoff. It says nice things about them. It will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Heck, I like many of those people myself and I enjoyed their characterizations... particularly Charlie, who is ANYBODY's definition of a character.
But if you're looking for the real story of how "the geeks, the suits, and the ponytails" brought Hollywood to the Internet, this book won't tell you how. It'll only tell you who.
I lived through this...and survived!.......1999-09-12
