Book Description

Stanley Kubrick The first book to explore Stanley Kubrick's archives is also the most comprehensive study of the filmmaker to date

Part 1: The films
In 1968, when Stanley Kubrick was asked to comment on the metaphysical significance of 2001: A Space Odyssey, he replied: "It's not a message I ever intended to convey in words. 2001 is a nonverbal experience…. I tried to create a visual experience, one that bypasses verbalized pigeonholing and directly penetrates the subconscious with an emotional and philosophic content." The philosophy behind Part I borrows from this line of thinking: from the opening sequence of Killer's Kiss to the final frames of Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick's complete films will be presented chronologically and wordlessly via frame enlargements. A completely nonverbal experience.

Part 2: The Creative Process
Divided into chapters chronologically by film, Part 2 brings to life the creative process of Kubrick's filmmaking by presenting a remarkable collection of material from his archives, including photographs, props, posters, artwork, set designs, sketches, correspondence, documents, screenplays, drafts, notes, and shooting schedules. Accompanying the visual material are essays by noted Kubrick scholars, articles written by and about Kubrick, and a selection of Kubrick's best interviews.

5 out of 5 stars Whoa!.......2007-09-16

Lucky me! I scored a copy of this and I have to say it is the best book on an artist I've ever seen. The previous reviewers weren't kidding--this thing is huge! Too large and heavy to be read anywhere but on a large flat surface, but that's not a complaint, unless you're lugging it across an airport like I did.

A spectacular book that you'll refer to repeatedly. I pored over it for hours. The first half is devoted to an incredible array of pristine stills from each film. The second half is focused on every film with a plethora of on-set photos and interviews with cast & crew. The book is helpfully tabbed by film.

A stunning look into one of the greatest of all filmmakers. So well designed that my friends were awed by its beauty. And that 70MM film strip--holy cow! IMHO, it's worth the price for just for that.

5 out of 5 stars Do you like perfection???.......2007-08-12

One of the most beautifully produced books I have ever seen!!! Worth every cent. This is the kind of book you set aside in a special place, so you can revisit it and continually discover something new. Five stars is not enough. An essential addtion for anyone who is interested in the work of Stanley Kubrick!!!
PERFECT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2007-06-01

The book is definetely a work of art. Congrats, Taschen, for such a well done job. You will find photos, storyboards, interviews, texts, articles and sorts of wonders from the Stanley Kubrick universe. The strip from a 90mm copy of 2001: A Space Odyssey is a delightful gift for appreciators of his masterpiece.

Absolutely worth-having.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful luxury item.........2007-05-17

As others have mentioned, this is a tremendously well put together book, with the tab system making it easy to get to the sections on the particular film you've just seen or are interested in. The essays, for the most part, are well written and engaging, and do a good job of enhancing the movies and giving you a context for the circumstances under which the movies are made. I've been using the book while watching each of one of Kubrick's movies, and it's a great way to get more out of each.

The size of the book is impressive from a collector's perspective but frustrating from an reader's - you do really have to read the book in a particular position, otherwise you may damage it. That said, the size of the book does enhance the tome's first half, featuring shots from the movies themselves. This might seem a bit dull, but for Kubrick, who actually grew up a photographer, it's well worth the time to flip through and marvel at the compositions.

Finally, I had wondered before buying the book if it was still in its first run with the filmstrip - as of May 2007, it is. I recommend sending a question to Amazon to ask - they quickly got back to me to let me know that the book I was buying did have the film strip.

Of course, the book is a bit pricey, so you certainly do need to be a devoted Kubrick follower to make it worth it. There are a number of other quality books with similar essays to the ones you'll find here, but the whole package - filmstrip, largeness of the book, screen shots, and the essays - combine to make the overall item something very special, and well worth it for those who can't get enough of Stanley.

5 out of 5 stars The Kubrick Experience.......2007-03-28

The other reviews of this remarkable book have more or less summed up what I would say so I've approached it from another angle: I've uploaded eight photos to give you an idea of what this highly visual (and costly) book looks like. Amazon doesn't display images numerically so you'll have to see them at random. Click 'customer images' under the cover.

If you are buying a used first-run copy do check with the seller that Mr Kubrick's film strip is in its sleeve and the CD is also included, photo one shows them in position. Some reviewers have rightly said that owning a bit of '2001' from Kubrick's personal collection gives the book extra kudos.

Photo two will give you an idea of how the book is organised. There are two sections, each with a series of colored tabs. His twelve movies have a tab each and in the first section there are eight hundred stills, black and white and color depending on the film. Photos three, four and five are some of the spreads from Dr Strangelove. The second part of the book covers each movie in detail with an amazing collection of visual material to back up the text. Photos six, seven and eight show some pages about the background and production of Dr Strangelove.

The back of the book has a fifty page Appendix A, B and C. A covers three unmade movies: Napoleon, AI and Aryan Papers. B has three essays. C is a chronology of Kubrick's life.

This is a BIG book, opening to thirty-three inches wide and at over fourteen pounds in weight it really can only be read on a table. Needless to say being a Taschen book it is beautifully designed and printed and if you do buy a copy the Kubrick experience will be quite overwhelming and long lasting.

This book was truely beneficial in interpreting and learning music history. The pictures and articles relate very much to college students in the modern day. It was an easy read and as a professor it was easy to make exam questions based on readings. Je l'aime bien!

Frederick Wiseman is among America's foremost documentary filmmakers. The recipient of many awards, including three Emmys, Wiseman has made more than thirty feature-length documentaries during a career that has spanned five decades. Together, these films provide a fascinating chronicle of American social and institutional life. This book makes available for the first time transcriptions of five of Wiseman's most important films-- Titicut Follies, High School, Welfare, High School II, Public Housing--providing all of the dialogue as well as annotations about other aspects of the soundtracks such as music and ambient noise, and notes about editing and camera movement. These scene-by-scene transcripts enable readers to scrutinize the films' complex structural patterns, recurring motifs, editing regimes, and the unscripted dialogue that makes Wiseman's cinema a rich repository of American speech. Editor Barry Keith Grant's critical introduction discusses the importance of sound in Wiseman's documentaries. Liberally illustrated with images from the films, these meticulous transcriptions are accompanied by a bibliography and filmography.

Leni Riefenstahl: Five Lives traces the fascinating and controversial life and work of the famous German photographer-filmmaker. Riefenstahl started her creative career as an aspiring dancer in the 1920s in Germany and then became a movie actress. She starred in a number of films, taking challenging roles that were sometimes dangerous and physically rigorous, such as the ice-bound and skiing roles in Storm over Mont Blanc, The White Flame, and SOS Iceberg. These outdoor films foretold the spirit of adventure that later guided Riefenstahl's photography career.

The crux of controversy that overshadows Riefenstahl's career is her handpicked appointment by Adolf Hitler to direct the infamous Nazi party rally film Triumph of the Will. Although, according to her memoirs, Riefenstahl tried to withdraw from the film, she created a work that depicted Hitler's plane descending from the clouds as if it carried a god, and she has been accused "of having significantly increased, by means of this film, the emotional bond of the Germans to Hitler." Riefenstahl then went on to direct the German film Olympia covering the 1936 Olympics. With WWII came great change and Riefenstahl's eventual imprisonment by the French. In her later years, she continued her photography career by documenting her trips to Africa and getting her scuba license in her 70s. Her close-up underwater pictures of sea life float like a dream in vivid color. For as damning as her association with the Nazis is, Riefenstahl is a complex and talented artist. This book is full of remarkable images of her acting and directorial career as well as her still photography, and it includes a detailed biography of her life and career--complete with family and personal pictures. --J.P. How different would Leni Riefenstahl's life have been had she not filmed Triumph of the Will? One can only speculate what films she would have directed and starred in after World War II were it not for Hitler insisting she do the film.

Riefenstahl has been referred to as a Renaissance woman, and she most certainly was. She was a creative being and expressed her creativity in dance, acting, directing, photography and ocean diving. These five areas, spanning her entire long life, are the subject of this sumptuous coffee table book.

Editor Taschen Angelica is to be commended on compiling this life-work on Riefenstahl while Leni was still alive to assist in the selection and arrangement of the photographs. The segment on the mountain films is worth the price of the book alone, but the color images of the Nuba are also amazing.

Riefenstahl's revenge against those who denied her her cinematic craft after World War II was being able to live to 101, and seeing her life-long accomplishments compliled into this book. Rumor has it Jody Foster is at work on a film project about Riefenstahl. One hopes Foster will get it right and cover her entire life, not just the years that caused so much controversy.

A biography in pictures of arguably the most influential female film-maker in the history of the medium...though all too many people in the industry are afraid to admit to it. Made the greatest propaganda film in history (unfortunate choice of subject matter) and the most important and influential sports documentary of all time (Olympia). Dancer, actress, director, producer, still photographer, underwater cinematographer...an astounding list of accomplishments driven by a desire to perceive and record the world around her has compelled Leni Riefenstahl since the beginning of the twentieth century.
Oversized, handsomely produced volume (typical Taschen quality) is packed with rare photographs and fascinating commentary. Note: sparkle in eyes of 19-year old dancer and 99-year old legend is exactly the same.

As gifted as she is controversial, Leni Riefenstahl's "five" lives are imminently fascinating as this impressive book will prove! Even to the uninformed or casual observer, this edition will entrance. A great addition to your library, especially if you are impressed by the 102 year old dynamo who continues to prove filmmaking and photography as an art form. A living testament to the fact that "bodies in motion, stay in motion!"

5 out of 5 stars You can tell a book by its cover.......2002-03-18

The striking front cover on this book is a publicity still as Junta, in the movie "The Blue Light" 1932. As impressive as the cover is, it gets better when you open it to reveal hundreds of artistically shot photos. Dr. Ruth says bigger is not necessarily better. However in this case it is; something about the size of the photographs add to their striking appearance. Most are in grainy black and white with some color sections. This book is just a wee to large to fit in my oversized bookshelf. So I am making a larger shelf to display the books front view.

Just as you assume that this is a great coffee table book you will find that there is more too it. Luckily the pictures are not cluttered or distracted by alpha pneumonics. All the descriptions are in a separate section. The title of the book is appropriate as it portray s the different vocations of Leni. (Dancer, Actress, Director, Photographer, Diver)

This book also enhances the viewing experience of Leni's films.

Fiction. Part of Dalkey Archive's American Literature Series. "We are now nearing the end of the millenium, and here comes this bigger-than-life novel once more, with the hope that it will find the readership now that has escaped it for more than fifteen years" -- John O'Brie, from the Preface. "It is as if James Joyce, for his sins, had been forced to grow up in Queens; as if Sam Beckett had been mugged by Godot in a Flushing confort station; as if Sid Caesar played the part of Moby Dick in a Roman Polanski movie shot underwater in Long Island City ... Mr. Mano is Tom Wolfe and Hunter S. Thompson and Henderson the Rain King" -- John Leonard, New York Times. Paginated backwards.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Take Five.......2000-04-28

Before its recent resurrection by Dalkey Archive, D Keith Mano's Take Five had enjoyed only an abbreviated and unheralded shelf life before fading away, largely unnoticed. It had been deemed too vulgar and blasphemous to appeal to conservative readers. At the same time, it was felt that Mano's overall theme of Christian redemption would put off the majority of more liberal-minded readers. Kudos to the folks at Dalkey for recognizing this novel's inherent value and taking the risk to provide us a second chance at it.

The Christian redemption idea is certainly a valid interpretation of Take Five, actually one that is pretty compelling. I would even concede that it may likely have dominated the author's intentions in the process of writing this book. But an identifying mark of good literature (and Take Five is surely that) lies in its openness to multiple and conflicting readings. I, personally, found nothing in the text that served to commit me to any exclusively Christian understanding of the story. Mr. Mano, wisely, has too much respect for his readers to try to do their thinking for them.

Simon Lynxx is the most high-energy, life-affirming cyclone of a character that I have come across since William Gaddis' JR. He constantly sweeps up both the reader and his supporting cast in his wake as he tilts at the windmills of his imagined betrayals and storms the walls denying him the just rewards of his self-proclaimed genius. In the manic process, he voraciously consumes everything and everyone in his path, and is then puzzled in the aftermath when his subjects' loyalty falls short of his expectations. Simon doesn't always have a clear fix on just exactly what it is that he wants, but finds himself, nevertheless, relentlessly driven by his hyper-awareness that he does want something and that it always seems to be just beyond his reach. His campaign in pursuit of these poorly articulated ends is marked by a series of coitus interrupti, variously literal and metaphorical, adding to his general frustration. His speech is vulgar, profane, and literally laced with a crude brand of bigotry. Because his invective is scattershot and aimed at no particular individual or group of individuals, it becomes apparent after a while that Simon is not a seething volcano of hatred and intolerance, but rather uses his offensiveness as a shield to keep intruders at bay. And to a man rendered so vulnerable by self-loathing, everyone is an intruder. Take Five is first and foremost the well-crafted tale of the humbling transformation and self-discovery of Simon Lynxx, but even more intriguing to me is the author's clever exploration of the nature/nurture controversy as it applies to the formation of Simon's character and the facade behind which he has chosen to hide. Mano offers no conclusive answers here, of course, but he does manage to present the question in a thought-provoking light.

As for the language and insensitive bigotry central to a character for whom we are asked to extend sympathy; well, I suspect that Mr. Mano is just a devoted disciple to the teachings of Father Bruce. Take Five is a wonderfully intelligent and engaging novel. It would be a shame for anyone to overlook the substance D. Keith Mano is offering us, while fretting over issues concerning his style.

5 out of 5 stars An unjustly ignored modern classic.......1999-06-10

I was Barnes&Noble-surfing for summer readingwhen I came across this fat volume. I knew D. Keith Mano's name, but not much else. Having read "Take Five" (it hurts me, a former English major, to put the title of a novel in quotes, but this is the Web) I can only guess at the hurt it must have caused its author to have had it be largely ignored in 1982. In fact I, who am undaunted by length or "difficulty," had never heard of it. I picture myself in 1982: "Gravity's Rainbow" went down without a hiccup at around that time.

So: this novel belongs with "GR," "Ulysses" and "The Recognitions" as great modern American encyclopedic novels.. Despite reviews to the contrary, it is actually quite accessible, more so than the novels to which I have just referred. Its hero is pleasantly reminiscent of Payne in Thomas McGuane's "The Bushwhacked Piano," but on steroids. It is very funny, literate, allusive, and, finally, moving. In 1999 its ability to shock is probably confined only to those who have innocently wandered quite wide of the innocuous literature aisle.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the most overlooked work of fiction in modern times.......1998-10-17

After reading this book, I handed it to my very well read brother who said "that is the sadest book I have ever read." It is, and it is not. It is a creative tour-de, like a more restrained and elemental Barthelme. It reminds me (as does the death and life of harry goth) of Confederacy of Dunces...I think Mano is just a brilliant writer.

                                      Book Description

In the second of the Jubilee Showboat Mysteries, Gwen Barlow, her mother, brother and a cast of colorful performers face another murder mystery on the Jubilee Palace showboat. This time the Jubilee has stopped in Moss Hollow, Kentucky, hometown of the troupe's lead actress, Marianne Dresden. However, Gwen soon learns that the ingenue's real name is Mary Alice Kobb, and she left her parents' cabin and a big secret behind when she ran away from the repressive river town run by the influential Diggers family. Gwen's hopes to avoid problems with the Kobbs are dashed when Mary Alice's coarse backwoods father, Shelby, is found dead on the Jubilee deck, strangled with a length of barbed wire. Sheriff Diggers orders the Jubilee to stay in port until the murder is solved. Gwen combs the town and countryside in search of clues so her beloved showboat can move on. While Mary Alice and other members of the Jubilee family are suspects, Gwen discovers that several people in Moss Hollow, including Shelby's own wife and sons, had reasons for wanting to see the unpleasant farmer done in. Gwen must deal with small-town prejudice, an overly zealous country preacher who takes a fancy to her, and a crude moonshiner who once courted Mary Alice. Luckily, she still has the handsome showboat captain, Carson Stockwell, on her side. Before the murder is solved, Gwen is granted a miraculous gift far beyond her wildest dreams that will change her life forever. But she almost loses this chance for happiness when she faces a horrifying end at the hands of the Moss Hollow killer.

Cynthia Thomason and her husband reside in Florida.

After inheriting the showboat the Jubilee Palace, The Barlows, mother Lillian daughter Gwen and brother Preston leave their staid existence in a small town and perform shows along the rivers of America. Their latest stop is Moss Hollow, Kentucky; an insular village that makes the star of the show Marianne Dresden acts very peculiar. Instead of acting like her casual out going self, she hides in her stateroom.

Gwen learns the reason the star is acting despondent and reclusive is because she came from this town and her real name is Mary Alice Kobb who left home in disgrace. Her father, a stern emotionally abusive man wants her to come home which she refuses to do and after the performances his body is found dead. The sheriff refuses to let the Jubilee leave until the murderer is caught and when another killing occurs, Gwen decides to snoop never realizing that she will be caught in a killer's trap.

Readers who like exciting amateur sleuth novels set in an American historical setting near the turn of the twentieth century will find the Jubilee showboat mysteries a pure delight. Cynthia Thomason creates characters that are easy to like and places then in situations that range from the comical to dangerous sometimes in the same scene. She creates a picture of a bygone era, one this reviewer finds enchanting.

The Jubilee Palace showboat has stopped for a performance in Moss Hollow, Kentucky. It is soon discovered that Moss Hollow is the birthplace of the troupe's lead actress, Marianne Dresden.

Apparently Marianne Dresden was born Mary Alice Kobb and left her parents' cabin and a big secret and ran away from the river town. The town appears to be run by the Diggers family. Everywhere Gwen Barlow turns, there is another member of the Diggers family.

Gwen's mother inherited the Jubilee Palace and now lives on it with her daughter Gwen and her son Preston.

After the performance, Mary Alice's father is found murdered on the showboat, grounding it in Moss Hollow until the investigation is completed. Gwen had so hoped they could leave right after the performance to avoid problems with the Kobb family.

In an attempt to free the Jubilee so it can move on, Gwen begins to investigate the murder to try to assist the sheriff. She soon finds that many people had reasons to see Mr. Kobb eliminated. In her attempts to find the truth, she has to deal with small-town prejudice and a country preacher who takes a fancy to Gwen. Then there's the crude moonshiner who once dated Mary Alice. Mary Alice wants nothing to do with anyone in Moss Hollow.

Gwen is happy to have the handsome showboat captain, Carson Stockwell, assisting her in the investigation and protecting her when needed.

Before the Jubilee is finally freed to go, a miracle arrives for Gwen. Can Gwen solve the murder without putting herself in harm and losing a chance at the miracle?

I love this series set on an old showboat. The characters are so enjoyable. So many different personalities and yet it is easy to keep them straight as you read. The author has done a great job of creating them and making them come to life. I feel as if I've been aboard the showboat when I'm reading.

Gwen is a fun, but determined young woman. She has to be to be able to run the Jubilee. But there are some twists in this book that make her relook at her life.

I highly recommend this book and can't wait to read the next one.
