5 out of 5 stars Emma Thompson's dazzling adaptation of Jane Austen's novel.......2001-11-28

If you read Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" before or after seeing the 1996 film version then I think it is pretty easy to conclude that Emma Thompson's Oscar for Best Screenplay adaptation was richly deserved. After writing and performing a series of short skits for British television, Thompson was approached by producer Lindsay Doran to write the screenplay. Thompson began by dramatizing every scene in the novel, which resulted in 300 hand written pages to be followed by 14 drafts as the 1811 novel was crafted into the final script. The result was a script that manages to be not only romantic and funny, but also romantic and funny in the best Austen sense of both words.

Be aware that this is the Original Script, not to be confused with the Shooting Script. This should be clear as soon as you beginning reading, because originally Thompson had the scene shifting back and forth between Mrs. Dashwood and Elinor/John and Fanny Dashwood (credit for this revision must go, I believe, to Film Editor Tim Squyres, who recut the scene so that we get all of one side and then the other instead of alternating back and forth as in the original script). Overall the strengths of Thompson's script are in two main directions. First, she manages to convey the scope of the novel in a two-hour screenplay, no mean task. Second, the little details she adds to Austen's story are simply marvelous. For example, her use of Shakespeare's Sonnet 116 ("Let me not the marriage of true minds"), which Marianne and Willoughby share to their great mutual delight and which Marianne repeats standing in the rain looking at Willoughby's new estate. In fact, Thompson revised the first scene to make it even better, having Willoughby misquote a key word in an elegant bit of foreshadowing. Thompson also makes one nice little change at the end. While Austen has Elinor bolt from the room to cry outside during the happy ending. Thompson creates a wonderful moment by having her stay in the room and having the rest of her family flee. There are not too many scenes where you are crying and laughing at the same time, but Thompson certainly created one (and has the added virtue of relying on herself as an actress to nail the performance as well). All of these are marvelous examples of playing to the strength of the cinema to bring Austen's novel to the screen.

But we get much more than just the screenplay in this volume, because Thompson includes excerpts from her diaries kept during both the writing of the screenplay and the actual production of the film. It would be nice if there was more insight into what she was thinking when writing the screenplay as I am always interested in how decisions were made and where inspiration comes from, but Thompson makes up for that with her little tales of working with director Ang Lee and the rest of the cast in making the film. Finally, in the Appendices, there is a very choice little treat, namely Imogen Stubbs' Prize-Winning Letter, written to Elinor from Lucy. Do not worry; by the time you read it you will understand why it is so hysterical. There is also a list of the fine homes and estates where "Sense and Sensibility" was filmed if you happen to be roaming around England and are interested in looking for such things.

5 out of 5 stars A look inside the making of the film.......2000-11-21

Most for-sale screenplays are just that -- screenplays. Emma Thompson, who wrote the screenplay for the delightful Jane Austen film "Sense and Sensibility," chose to include journal entries throughout the filming of the movie as well, in addition to the winning entry of a contest to see who could write the best letter from Fanny to Elinor.

There is wit in the descriptions and the photos, all well-captured. The journal entries are entertaining and a good look into the making of a movie. Although be forewarned -- because they dress like the characters of S&S, they do not talk like them. There is definitely some verbal crudeness in the book, men and women alike, but if you can overlook that (or are used to it) then this book will be a delightful read for any Jane Austen fan.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at a remarkable film........2000-07-07

There are three separate parts to this fine volume; introduction, script and diaries. The producer of the film, Lindsay Doran, opens the door for us with her wonderful introduction. At age 13, she was determined that not only was "Jane Austen a very stupid writer," but also she would "never, never read one of her stupid books again."

Fortunately for the rest of the world, Ms. Doran changed her mind, and some twenty-five years after that first erroneous conclusion, has brought us this wonderfully witty, and extremely faithful film version of this first novel by Austen. As producer of the Kenneth Branagh/Emma Thompson film, DEAD AGAIN, she became acquainted with the woman who was not only a phenomenal actress, but also a gifted writer-one with a sense of humor and a strong romantic bent. These two qualities had proven to be the stumbling block over nearly ten years of searching for the right scriptwriter for Sense and Sensibility.

It took nearly seven years to come up with something close to a shooting script, sandwiched as it had to be between Thompson's many award-winning acting chores. Serendipity was obviously at work, however, and eventually, a budget was established, and casting accomplished.

Many of the actors Emma had envisioned in various roles had participated in a read-through the year prior to the filming; they were all in the film, in those same roles.

While the Dashwood ladies are all suitable beautiful, it is the men who are truly gorgeous. ("Repellently so," writes Ms. Thompson in the diary portion, referring to Hugh Grant. "He's much prettier than I am.") With his look-alike Richard Lumsden, they are the brothers Ferrar, Edward and Richard, with Greg Wise as the fickle Willoughby. Alan Rickman (be still my heart!) brings maturity and virility to the role of Colonel Brandon. The sets and costumes are sumptuous.

Interspersed with the actual shooting script and the diaries are some 50 photographs, 36 of them in luscious color. One script looks pretty much like another, but this one allows Ms. Thompson's wry wit to shine, especially in some of the non-spoken words. Of course, not every scene from the book could be included; the movie would have been more than six hours had they been. But the essentials are here, along with all the major characters. Providing testimony to just how perspicacious was the choice of writer is the number of awards garnered by Thompson for this, her first film script.

The diaries portion begin with a production meeting on January 15, 1995 and continue through July 9 of that year. A very small mention is made of Hugh Grant's visit to California, where he'd gone for his next film project after the completion of filming his scenes in England. A final two pages describes the 'location' houses chosen to represent those lived in by the families in the novel.

It may come as somewhat of a surprise to some readers to discover rather explicit language in the diaries. In addition to an apparent fascination with the alimentary process, our Emma has a bit of a potty-mouth, as do some of the gentleman involved, and their words are recorded, one presumes unhappily, all too accurately. They seem curiously jarring and out of place in a book otherwise devoted to the pristine words of Jane Austen.

Nevertheless, this is a lovely, hefty book; one which will bring the reader back to it time and again. There is always a new and enjoyable nugget to be mined from its various depths.

5 out of 5 stars Great marriage of screenplay and journal writing.......2000-02-28

The screenplay itself is a must-read for anyone wanting an education in bringing a well-loved story to life. Emma Thompson does an ingenius job of crafting scenes that are faithful to Austen's original while inventing more that add character development and plot intrigue. I especially like her diary, though. For those who wonder what to include in a memoir of an experience, this journal is a rich model of self-disclosure and humor. I heartily recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2000-01-04

I truly enjoyed this work by Emma Thompson. Not only is the screenplay included, with pictures, but also there are diary entries by Thompson that give insights into the making of the movie. If you loved this movie, you should read this book. I really enjoyed it.

            2 out of 5 stars Well-intentioned, but I would skip it.......2004-09-17

The creator is obviously a sincere and observant fan of the series, and this effort deserved to be better than it turned out. Basically this is a rather thin book of drawings. Plan views of buildings, vehicles, pieces of equipment, signage, and whatever else the author could find. There's very little commentary or text, and there are some problems with what is there. For instance the author describes the large round doors in Number Six's home as being "Rover-friendly" but doesn't explain how Rover would enter through the narrow front door! He also gives credence to the story that the Prisoner is the John Drake character from an earlier series, even though McGoohan denies it.

I was a little surprised at the limited coverage of clothing. It may be that there just isn't enough information out there, but extremely detailed drawings, and perhaps even patterns would be useful for the truly fanatical folks who want to create their own Village-style clothing!

About the only thing in this that made me say "Ah, that's interesting!" was a diagram of the layout of all the different nameplates in front of the masked audience in the Fallout episode. It isn't really useful or vital, but I was curious at all the different groups listed--Anarchists, Old Folks, etc.

I can't recommend it for the money.

5 out of 5 stars The most fun of the Prisoner books.......2003-10-10

This isn't like one of those weird excuses for novels or the episode guides that come out every few years. I've seen the show, what am I going to do with another episode guide?

The Village Files is geared more to the Prisoner fan who goes for the sci-fi aspect. It's kind of a mix between one of those Star Trek guides with all the schematics and a employee handbook for Village warders-- complete diagrams of every building, cave, hidden camera, and car. It has some funny stuff you don't see in other more serious Prisoner books like the top and profile views of Rover, LOL! My wife pointed out THE PAGES ARE NUMBERED LIKE THE FREE INFORMATION BOOTH, TOO!!! :)

I thought it was just going to be a book of pictures when I got it but I keep finding more stuff every time I look through it. I think Patrick McGoohan himself would appreciate the research and humor that went into it. I wish I knew something about doing JKII or Quake mods or Sims skins because it would be perfect for that.

If you have seen "The Blair Witch Project" movies, then you must read "The Blair Witch Files, The Prisoner". The character, Cade Merrill, has made it a mission to out as much as he can about the witch. See, Cade, he's Heather Donahue's cousin and she is the girl from the first Blair Witch movie. So in this file he encounters a cry for help, from a girl named Eliza Baynes, and what's interesting is that she is in prison. So Cade sets out to see why she has requested him to help her. It turns out that she never sent a letter. She claims to not even remember writing one. So, being interested already, Cade puts that aside and talks to her anyway. At first the girl is scared claiming Cade will get hurt if she tells him her story. She says that is how all the others died. So already intrigued, Cade makes a few visits back to the prison. Eliza tells Cade that maybe he can hear her story, from Elisa's journal. So as Cade left that day he also takes Eliza's journal. The first few entries only tell about Eliza's moving to Burkittsville, Maryland with her father. Then, things get weird, and the murders start coming up in the journal. As Cade reads more, the more things get crazier around him. Now what kind of person would I be if I told you more? Sorry, but if you want to find out more, you are going to have to read the book and find out for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting concept shattered by a lack of explanation..........2003-01-26

The Prisoner is only the second Blair Witch Files novel I'd ventured in and I must say that is fails to make me eager to read another. When I read The Witch's Daughter I was really impressed and I was very eager to read another entry in the series, but upon finishing The Prisoner I just kinda felt...empty? I don't know which word describes my post-Prisoner mood, but I just felt like I wanted more to the story. I mean it has an interesting premise of a girl, Eliza Baynes, who was convicted of a crime she didn't commit, Murder, and is desperately seeking Cade's help. Cade gets involved, reads her diary and a bunch of weird events happen which seem a little more than coincidental. But like other reviewers I wanted to know more about the Blair Witch and Eliza Baynes, some of the explanations seem a little too easy to come by, and some of the dialogue the characters used was simply laughable and seemed like something from a poorly written Teenage Soap Opera. But on a better note I will say that there were some elements of the story that were just flat out eerie, I mean the way the author describes them and the mental image that gets associated with those words is just plain eerie.

As a whole I would say that The Prisoner was mildly entertaining, there were a lot of elements that I wanted to be deeper explored and I wanted thought out explanations, not just sloppy one or two sentences to explain a few chapters worth of going-ons. The Prisoner left me wanting to desire fulfillment, it didn't leave things unexplained involving Eliza Baynes, it's just that every explanation was just so blunt and fast that it left something to be desired. I can only recommend The Prisoner if you are a true Blair Witch fan, as most non-Blair Witch fans would probably be lost and would laugh at the bland pre-adolescent dialogue. Simply put, The Prisoner only slightly provided a sense of satisfaction upon completion and I can only recommend that fans of the Blair Witch Project check into it. I hope my review will help you in your decision on The Prisoner, whether you pass or buy, thanks for reading.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book in the Blair Witch Files Series..........2001-06-24

When Cade Merrill is contacted by a girl convicted of murder, he is determined to uncover the truth about her crimes. At sixteen Eliza Baynes tried to take her revenge on the stepbrother she hated, but her attempts at a spell ended with the death of her father. Sent to boarding school, Eliza is haunted by her past and the fact that everyone she talks to about what happened dies in mysterious circumstances.

Finally convinced she has escaped from the witch's evil, Eliza returns to Burkittsville, where it is soon apparent that history is repeating itself. Eliza was only eighteen years old when she was given the death penalty for killing her then boyfriend Jake Henderson on the evidence of his younger brother Ryan. Her sentence is later retracted and Eliza is sentenced to life imprisonment, but the memories of what took place remain and she needs Cade's help. Eliza claims that she herself is innocent and that Jake's murder was committed by a person under the control of the Blair Witch. As she warns Cade, everyone who hears her story ends up dead. Will Cade be the next victim of the Blair Witch?

"The Prisoner" is the sixth book in the Blair Witch Casefiles series. It was a fast-paced, entertaining and genuinely scary book, although it did lack the suspense of some of the previous books. I love every book in the series so far and this one did not disappoint. I recommend this to all Blair Witch fans.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, can't wait to read the rest..........2001-06-15

This book was a very good read, in fact it only took me a day to read it.(even though it was a short book)The story is about a young girl who is convicted of murder for a crime she claims she did not commite, that in fact it was the blair witch....and anyone who she tells her story to dies...so she asks Cade Merrill for help and he ends up reading her diary (which you will be reading in the book). While the story is really good...it was also depressing caues it turnes out sad. And of course sincs it is of the Blair Witch you still dont fine any truth about anything, you just read the story. I cant wait to ready the other 7 books in The blair witch Files. You can go to the website if you want to now more about the books, there are even clues to each of the books you can read, like the e-mails of the people who wrote to Cade Merrill and other interesting stuff. ...

            Book Description

Gabriel Black finds himself sentenced to prison for life without the possibility of parole for a murder he did not commit. In a twisted sense of honor, he takes responsibility for the action of a woman he loves and pays for it with his freedom.

One day in the prison library Gabriel reads about a man with a wonderful family and a successful career who finds that he has been cured of cancer—thus proving, the author says, the existence of God. Gabriel is unmoved. A truer test of God's existence would be to find proof of Him in a disgusting corner of the world like prison, without hope, surrounded by violence, hatred, and indifference.

Gabriel starts a file where he can store any evidence of the divine he comes across no matter how unseemly. In brutal, honest language, he uncovers himself and the world while surviving in a hopeless hole, swimming in angry memories and regret.

2 out of 5 stars The God File.......2007-01-03

I found this to be a very difficult book to read; perhaps because my views are different from those portrayed in the book. I did finish it and passed it on to a friend who said she could not finish the book and decided not to pass it further. Some people may identify with the author, but I was not one of them and neither was my friend.

Deeply moving, thought-provoking, and very moving. This novel has taught me different ways to view myself, as well as my life and my God. Wow...

            5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book.........2003-10-08

Gabriel Black was sentenced to life in prison. He has all the time in the world to sit and think about things that the common person just overlooks or takes advantage of. He decided to search for God in prison. Each chapter is titled with what he believes is proof that God excists.

The one thing I loved about this book was how deep thoughts he was. I had to keep underlining stuff in the book that I really liked a lot. Really made you think a lot.

This is one of those books that I wish I wrote.

4 out of 5 stars "Waiting for Godot".......2003-10-01

Gabriel Black is the instrument of his own punishment, a young man who has taken the murder of his girlfriend's husband on his own shoulders, accepting the blame for a crime he has not committed. When his girlfriend, the only other witness, makes no effort in his defense, Gabriel is left alone behind prison bars. In this vast wasteland of personal pain and the struggle to account for a misspent life, he begins a lifelong search for deliverance.

Sentenced to life without parole, Black sets himself the task of finding God in the lowest of places, where the dregs of humanity endure endless days of mind-numbing boredom with only their twisted memories for company. Some spend the years reading, learning about a world they barely remember and may never see again, while others escape into monotonous drug-induced sleep or give free reign to the demons that have brought them to this place.

Walking a landscape of despair, Hollon treads familiar territory as his protagonist gathers the contents of the box that will define his life, piece by piece, assimilating The God File. There are soulful letters, mournful essays, remembrances of things past, questions about this terrible struggle, all arranged in a particular order of importance. All attempt to explain the inexplicable, to find a place where belief can coexist with despair.

Gabriel's quest is intensely spiritual; the years he spends gathering this ambiguous evidence are part of his evolution toward the answer he so desperately craves. It would be impossible for Gabriel to find God when he first comes into prison. He hasn't achieved the maturity to save himself, let alone determine the existence of God. Each particle of thought scribbled on a scrap of paper in The God File is necessary to the whole. Gabriel has been baptized Catholic and his journey is littered with the small rituals, pieties and beliefs that are wedged so deep in the soul they almost cease to exist, until they are needed. Then, in the never-quiet, never-quite-dark, they emerge, tiny hopeful prayers, begging for a response. From God.

For Gabriel to find an answer to his question and know peace, he must be willing to endure each step of the agonizing journey. After all the wasted years, all the unspoken entreaties, Gabriel must experience patience. He has nowhere else to go. It is his journey alone and his personal path is intimately marked by the struggles of his individual soul. Yet Gabriel finds the courage to make each fragile leap of faith, to surrender his haunting question: "If God gives me more than I can endure, how can I know?" Gabriel listens to the faint sound in the chambers of his tortured mind, hoping to understand. Perhaps, after all, he will find peace of mind. Luan Gaines/2003.

5 out of 5 stars THE GOD FILE.......2002-08-22

In THE PAINS OF APRIL, Frank Hollon insinuated himself into the mind of a man many years his senior and expressed thoughts, ideas, feelings and recollections that would seem to me to be collectively accumulated during a lifetime and, therefore, unavailable to a man as young as Hollon when he write his first novel.
In his most recent novel, THE GOD FILE, he has once again placed himself in the mind of a person whose experiences would appear to be profoundly foreign to his own and, once again, he provides a keenly focused, sensitive journey through the mind of Gabriel Black, a prisoner, who has self-imposed a search to chronicle events that reflect the existence of God. Hollon provides many varied thought-provoking instances in which the reader is challenged to consider his/her own views of the existence of God (and other philosophical questions) -- and, indeed they are powerful, substantive situations. I found myself at times absorbed in his descriptions of the inner-workings of the minds of the players; the who, what, when and where of the events, only to be intensely reminded by Gabriel Black at the end of each scenario of the WHY he started his file. This is a wonderful book.
