Book Description
Welcome, foolish mortals, to The Haunted Mansion, one of the most popular attractions in Disney theme park history. The Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies fleshes out how the Mansion's 999 grim grinning ghosts were brought to life. Rare early sketches and story concepts, and stunning architectural drawings illustrate the Mansion's evolution as it was constructed at each Magic Kingdom Park around the globe. The attraction has now been brought to an afterlife like never before in a movie starring Eddie Murphy, with special effects by Rick Baker. Readers will get an insider's view of uncanny costume creations, spine-tingling set developments, and the latest in CGI (computer ghost imaging) technology. This is one book you'll be dying to have on your shelf!

Welcome foolish mortaals, to the haunted mansion!.......2007-08-17
THis book was great! A ton of information on the ride! I couldnt put it down! It was great.
A SPIRITED TRIBUTE TO A DISNEY CLASSIC.......2006-07-18
This book is a must read for ALL ages and ANYONE interested in Disney theme park attractions around the globe. Any Disney fan knows that the Imagineers are very particular about what is revealed to the general public in terms of how they make their Disney 'magic' and I was pleasantly surprised (being an avid Disney fan myself) by the research that went into the making of this book and the amount of knowledge shared with the reader - it DOES in fact reveal some secrets of the mansion and never before seen history of the making of the attraction. (It confirms and dispels some rumors about the attraction once and for all too!) A pattern of discussion is followed throughout the book as you are verbally walked through the mansion's corridors and rooms. Surrell consistently covers the Haunted Mansion in a logical order (Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris) in every chapter. He takes the subject matter full circle by including information about how the attraction was translated to the big screen, and gives the reader insight to how decisions were made pertaining to set design, costume design, and casting for the movie of the same name. If you want an intelligent, thorough and enjoyable read about a classic Disney attraction, and especially an insight to the magic that is Imagineering, this is a MUST READ!
Weak information...a promo for the ride and the movie.......2006-07-10
You buy this book thinking it's a great "behind-the-scenes" resource, but it's not. Yes, there is some background information, but the book skips confusingly from park to park, and offers very little technical information on the special effects. The photos are all standard Disney promotional stuff...this book tells you what Disney wants you to know, and nothing else.
Go to doombuggies.com for a much better treatment of this classic ride.
This reader says "hurry ba-ack, hurry ba-ack".......2006-07-03
Lots o' great info on both the Ride @ the Disney Theme Parks + the Movie [which I loath - sorry but the Haunted Mansion wasn't meant to be made into a 2 hour episode of the Fresh Prince of Bellaire, mmmkay ?] + the Haunted Mansion Holiday ....
Future editions should drop all reference to the Movie, then spend more time on the Haunted Mansion Holiday [Nightmare Before Christmas Holiday makeover] + recent "changes" that occured in 2006 [I'd make it a 5 star if they did that] ....
If you don't want to read the book, please buy it for the artwork
[best priced Disney Merchandise vs. what you will pay @ the Theme Parks] ....
~(^)~
Great read!.......2006-06-18
I picked this book up at Disneyland and it's fantastic! I only wish I'd have read it before going on the ride, there's so many little details I didn't know to look for.
If you're a fan of the attraction, you'll love this book!

Straightforward, to the point about the Jingle business.......1999-07-01
This book is great! I needed information that would give me the cut and dry points regarding getting into the jingle business. Not only did it discuss business standards but it also discusses business politics, do's and dont's and the financial aspect of the jingle business. However, this book mainly discusses the jingle business from the composer point of view and not as much from the musician or singer point of view. But it is a great book.

Book Description
In this book, my hope is that you will find your personal answer to the question that the title asks: "Whatever happened to 'the good life?'" Along the way you will also find an opportunity to determine your own "RQ" or "recreational quotient" based on involvement (or lack of same) in a broad spectrum of recreational pursuits. After doing this and seeing where you score personally, you can then take the necessary steps -- if you wish -- to raise your Recreation Quotient ("RQ"). Further, this discussion of your leisure-time involvement will be related to society's development.
The "test" or "assessment" of your recreational quotient ("RQ") is based on a scale moving from passive, to vicarious, to active, to creative involvement in life's many educational and recreational activities. It gives you more credit if you are a most interested onlooker or listener rather than a passive one. Additionally, you will score even higher if you actively take part in a particular recreational activity. The highest rating goes to the person who participates in a superior and/or creative fashion.
Why should this subject concern you? It should because one development of modern society has been that people are increasingly crowded together in heavily populated urban and suburban communities. This has created a serious problem. We now need to know how people can find happiness, satisfaction, and a high quality of life despite the increased tempo of living often amidst such badly crowded conditions?
With advancing civilization North Americans have been accused of being afflicted with spectatoritis (i.e. spending too much of their free time watching others taking part in some form of activity, recreational or otherwise). Obviously, this practice is not something that should be encouraged too extensively. It is the unfortunate truth that throughout history people in many societies have misused leisure after they have earned it. In certain instances this misuse of free time has actually had much to do with the downfall of that society.
Studies have shown that people are concerned about whether they are getting sufficient pleasure out of life. We know, also, that sound recreational pursuits can add zest and vigor to our lives. The resulting question revolves about whether we will be able to encourage people of all ages to get involved in a variety of recreational pursuits actively and creatively.
We can all appreciate further that there are many ways of looking at the subject of recreation. However, although we could determine averages (or norms) for a given population in regard to types of recreational pursuits followed, it just doesn't seem advisable in a free society to set standards that people should follow.
I firmly believe that a person's value system will -- and should -- undergird basically any choices that he or she may make about which types of recreational pursuit to follow. Accordingly in the Appendix, you will have an opportunity to assess yourself "socio-culturally" and "philosophically" in this respect.
So there you have it. I hope this book will help to broaden your perspective on the whole question of lesire. I hope, also, that you will consider, and then perhaps even reconsider, this important matter of putting quality recreational time in your life to just the right amount. It's a challenge, of course, but it should be great fun to work it out personally. The "good life" is still out there, but you will have to plan -- oh so carefully!--to achieve it. Good luck -- and "good planning!"

Book Description
Why is it that now, when Americans have more leisure time than ever before, we feel we have less and less? Could the increasingly large role of television in our lives be part of the reason? Leisure expert Barbara Brock set out to answer these questions, based on a landmark survey of 1200 TV-free families from across the country. The results of this study, and Ms. Brock's conclusions as to what we should do to reclaim our time, ground this timely and illuminating book.
Customer Reviews:
Must-Read Book!.......2007-08-19
OK, so the title is a cheap rip-off of the "Must-See TV" mantra that we've been inundated by those purveyors of the electronic medium.
But as someone who has lived outside the box for more than a decade, I appreciate the thoroughness, clarity and thoughtfulness with which Brock writes in "Living Outside The Box."
She doesn't condemn TV, nor does she condemn those of us who watch it so much---and let's face it, a whole bunch of us do that, or have done that for long stretches of our lives. Instead, Brock focuses more on the up-side of turning off the TV---the doors it opens in our lives for other activities, deeper involvement with others in our family and community, and a more independent way of looking at the world.
Brock is a gracious, insightful woman whose book truly is a "must" for anyone seeking to look at how the other 1/1000th (or whatever the minuscule fraction is) live. New parents (even old parents :-) should seriously consider the benefits that can come into your life when TV is out of your life (or at least used sparingly). Every "no" inherently means "yes" to one or more other things (including writing reviews on Amazon).
When you say "no" to TV, you say "yes" to so many other beneficial things, and Brock does a terrific job of laying that out in an engaging, thought-provoking manner.
I should note that I was not among those whom Brock surveyed, though I have been in touch with her via email since the book came out (after I wrote a piece about the decision that my wife and I made to pull the plug on our TV).
A one-of-a-kind look at a draconian yet effective antidote.......2007-08-05
Written by recreation management professor Barbara Brock, Living Outside the Box: TV-Free Families Share Their Secrets is a thoughtful analysis and outgrowth of the author's landmark study of hundreds of TV-free families. Living Outside the Box does not focus upon what is wrong with too much TV, but rather the positive benefits of entirely eliminating TV from one's daily life. Chapters offer personal testimony from parents who choose to go TV-free, and how they help their children adjust as well as finding other means to spend their time. A one-of-a-kind look at a draconian yet effective antidote to the intrusively advertisement-saturated aspects of our passive media culture, highly recommended.
Book Description
The seventh edition of this classic textbook continues to provide a detailed overview of the history, developments, and current trends in leisure studies. It has been heavily revised to reflect recent societal changes and the challenges that face the leisure-services industry in the 21st century. Students will learn how trends such as dramatic shifts in population make-up, the impact of technology, and marketing affect leisure-service systems and the recreation and park professions. To reflect these trends, the text now focuses on ten different types of organizations, ranging from nonprofit community organizations or armed forces recreation to sports management and travel and tourism sponsors.

Book Description
Fair Play in Sport presents a critical re-working of the classic ideal of fair play and explores its practical consequences for competitive sport. By linking general moral principles and practical cases, the book develops a contemporary theory of fair play.
The book examines many of the key issues in the ethics of sport, including:
* fairness and justice in sport
* moral and immoral interpretation of 'athletic performance'
* what makes a 'good competition'
* the key values of competitive sport.
The notion of fair play is integral to sport as we know and experience it, and is commonly seen as a necessary ethos if competitive sport is to survive and flourish. Fair Play in Sport provides an invaluable guide to the subject for all those with an interest in ethics and the philosophy of sport.
