Book Description

Welcome to Wonderland and the topsy-turvy world of Lewis Carroll, where nothing means quite what it seems and nobody might pass you on the street! Journey down the rabbit hole and through the looking-glass and enter into the mythical, magical imagination of Lewis Carroll and his beloved heroine, Alice.

Editor Linda Sunshine, in her follow-up to the bestselling All Things Oz, has gathered together an incredible collection of artwork, quotations, letters, recipes, puzzles and games inspired by the works of Lewis Carroll. She has traveled the world for the most extraordinary examples of art from hundreds of editions of Carroll’s works, including versions from the United States, England, Italy, France, Japan and Russia. Complementing Sir John Tenniel’s classic drawings are works by such renowned illustrators as Arthur Rackham, Gwynedd Hudson, Charles Folkard, Blanche McManus, Gertrude Kay, Mabel Lucie Attwell and Milo Winter.

Also among the treasures in this collection is a short story Carroll penned for a young friend, “Isa’s Adventures in Oxford,” which has gone unpublished since 1900. Excerpts from Carroll’s letters, most of which have been seen only in scholarly texts, reveal his passion for wordplay and his unique wit. Even rare excerpts from the magazines Carroll created as a child for members of his family are featured here, alongside images of his most famous characters.

Open this book and begin a curiouser and curiouser journey with Alice and her friends: the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, Humpty Dumpty, and, of course, the White Rabbit.

5 out of 5 stars Not nearly all things, but still a lovely book.......2005-10-21

I have been collecting Alice in Wonderland items for nearly 30 years and I am happy to add this book to my collection. The information is presented in a format that is accessible to the general public and not just the Alice afficianado. The book production is also wery pleasing. The wonder of Alice is how she shows up all over the globe in so many ways 140 years after her conception. I think the title of the book understates to what extent Alice lives in our modern popular culture.

5 out of 5 stars ALL THINGS ALICE - SHEER DELIGHT.......2005-01-08

I love this book. I received it yesterday at my office and read what I could on my lunch hour. I couldn't wait to get home. I bought this because I wanted to eventually introduce my 1 year old granddaughter to "Alice In Wonderland." Imagine my surprise to find that I can start reading to her now. There are extended nursery rhymes, funny sayings and a fascinating dialogue through the whole book. The illustrations are superb! I can start my granddaughter on the "white rabbit, calico cat, the queen" as well as "Alice" just from these wonderful illustrations. I can highly recommend this book for children and also adults who enjoy Lewis Carroll's wit. I cannot write enough good things about it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unparalleled Wit & Wisdom.......2002-12-01

"I can resist everything except temptation."
"There is no sin except stupidity."
"It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances."
"It is always with the best intentions that the worst work is done."

These laconic aphorisms are just the tip of the iceberg of Wilde's impressive, yet oftentimes eclectic and nihilistic, use of the English language. Dover gives us 60 pages of brilliant witticisms and axioms to use over and over again for a mere dollar. You can't go wrong. Also recommended - Dover's Shakespeare quotes book for a dollar. Enjoy.

Everyone knows OW was a witty guy.

If you want to find witty things he said in one small book such that you can try to emulate his wit, this book is for you.

It's good for an hour's read where you will snicker, snort, and grin.

It's exactly what i expected and exactly what I got. Whee!

This collection of Wilde's greatest quotes is an easy read, and wonderful to keep around the house. Wilde's wisdom is displayed throughout this edition, and is a must have for any Wilde fan.

4 out of 5 stars A focused collection of Johnson quotations........1999-03-20

.
Danckert has developed a nice, portable collection of Johnson quotes, drawing on a variety of his writings, including some sadly neglected ones (the Sermons). The collection provides a very good picture of Johnson's thoughts as a moral instructor, and this is one of the best selection of Johnson's quotes in print. The thoughts here are considerably fuller than what you'll see in a volume like Bartlett's, which tends to go for the quick witticisms. For that alone, it's worth buying. But, I wish it were more: because of the focus, there is a lot of Johnson we don't get. We don't see enough of the political arguments or the literary criticism, we don't get the chestnuts that have often been handed down, but are still new to the newcomer. For instance, "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" is not to be found, nor any of his famous comments on Scotland. In my view, this book is incomplete. Even among "incomplete" Johnson collections, I feel there are better ones to be had (Henry Darcy Curwen's "A Johnson Sampler" [Harvard, 1963] has just been re-issued). If you are Irish this book is for you! The wit is from the "old country." Many of the jokes are old but timeless. They belie the culture of the not so distant past. The Irish find humor in almost every situation, and this book demonstrates this very well. The wisdom is ageless and is exactly what has gotten the Irish through their bad times. If you want to know why the Irish can get through their hard times read this book. Joan Larson Kelly understands and has chosen the best of the Irish Wit and Wisdom. She knows Pat and Mike inside out. For insight into the Irish Wit and Wisdom read this wonderful book.

Savor the wit and wisdom, charm and humor of Irish everyday life in words that have stood the test of time. Each delightful, thought-provoking proverb, from the oral tradition, reveals the attitudes, concerns, and down-to-earth vision of ordinary folk. The topics covered are wide-ranging: tenants and landlords, food and drinks, hunting and fishing, money, the law, occupations, and so many more. Here are a few thoughts to live by: It is not the hen that cackles most that lays the largest eggs. A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures in the doctor's book. Be the road straight or crooked the high road is the shortest. If there is a way into the wood there is also a way out of it. Many examples appear in both English and Irish. 128 pages, 5 3/8 x 8 1/4.

        Book Description

All of the wise, insulting, obscure, profound, and sometimes idiotic sayings of the Irish are distilled in this unique collection of quotes-from famous thinkers like Yeats, Swift, and Wilde to the layman. Irish wit is an art form, and for years the Irish have mixed wit with wisdom, as they have porter with whiskey, and to the same intoxicating effect. These maxims record Irish opinions on love, religion, the 'hard stuff,' the English, and common subjects like fighting, sport, and food. This book is ideal for those looking for the perfect toast or wishing to impress people at parties.

          Book Description

Few great writers can have cut so unglamorous a figure in the world as Jane Austen did. The fifth child of a Hampshire clergyman of modest means, Austen was more highly regarded among her family for her skill with the embroidery needle than for the sharpness of her wit. Yet, nearly two hundred years after she first put pen to paper, Austen's insights into human nature are as apt and accurate as when she originally wrote them. A witty and elegant collection of truths, ageless in their relevance. Michael Kerrigan is the author of Who Lies Where: A Guide to Famous Graves.

The cover picture is really beautiful. The text is shoddy and second-rate, at best; sort of like Madonna's latest incarnation of herself!

Only the hardcore teens and college age bunch will find this interesting. She says in the book that papers and magazines aren't allowed in the house, but in a recent (2007) photo of the inside of one of her homes, we see a framed photo of herself cut from a tabloid!
Simplistic quotes and outright lies like the one above. Can anyone publish a book these days? At least it's a quick read.

In Easy Money, David Spanier examines the psychological motivation of gamblers—those who beat the system and those beaten by it. Portraying the personalities and legends of the gambling world, he ranges widely over his subject, considering the motivations of gamblers, even the physical sensations they experience. Although his focus is on the individual, he also looks at the percentages and the chances, the differences in European and American gambling, and the criminal element in U.S. gaming. David Spanier is a former London Times journalist and author of Total Poker and The Hand I Played.

                              Book Description

The administration and management of industrial labor, except in the Army's arsenals, were until World War I fields remote from the traditional responsibilities of the Army. In World War II the War Department found itself drawn into these areas to an unprecedented extent, not only by its concern for the output of munitions, but also by its new responsibilities regarding industry in such fields as the maintenance of security in war plants, the enforcement of labor laws and policies, and the administration of facilities forcibly seized by the government to avert stoppage of production by labor-management disputes. The present volume is not intended to be a comprehensive treatise; the aim, instead, is to illustrate by discussion of selected topics the nature of the problems the War Department faced in relation to the employment of industrial manpower and the policies and procedures that it developed to deal with them. This discussion is complementary to two other volumes on the subject of procurement, economic mobilization, and supply -"The Army and Economic Mobilization" and "Buying Aircraft: Materiel Procurement for the Army Air Forces"- as well as to the histories of the technical services.

Given the experience of World War I, the concern of the War Department with labor problems as an aspect of its broad responsibilities for procurement was recognized and was the subject of planning in the years between the two world wars. The labor planning and the organizational developments that occurred during World War II are described in Chapters I and II, which provide the background for the rest of the volume. Chapters III through V constitute a discussion of the restrictive factors affecting the use of the civilian labor force that either were anticipated or assumed important during the war. The authors next consider the problem of labor supply, which gained momentum toward the end of 1943, and the efforts of the Army to meet it (Chs. VI through IX). They describe the measures taken to recruit additional workers and the successful special project technique that was developed to deal with labor problems. The subject of Chapter X is the role of the Army as an instrument for enforcing the labor policies of the government. The use of Selective Service and the seizure of industrial facilities by the government as measures of enforcement are described. The volume concludes with a discussion of the attempts to obtain the enactment by Congress of some form of national service legislation (Ch. XI) and with a brief chronological survey (Ch. XII)
