      Book Description

A complete guide for beginning and advanced banjo players! From Ken Perlman, here is a brilliant teaching guide that is destined to become the handbook on how to play the banjo. The style is easy to learn, and covers the instruction itself, basic right and left-hand positions, simple chords, and fundamental clawhammer techniques; the brush, the 'bumm-titty' strum, pull-offs, and slides. For the advanced player, there is instruction on more complicated picking, double thumbing, quick slides, fretted pull-offs, harmonics, improvisation, and more. The book includes more than 40 fun-to-play banjo tunes.

5 out of 5 stars *The* way to learn clawhammer.......2006-07-19

Pete Seeger's famous little book got me started frailing and picking, but it was this book that really taught me how to play clawhammer. I can't recommend it highly enough. Besides teaching the basics, Perlman presents a full repetoir of well-known traditional songs- enough for a couple of sets. I can't recommend this book (and Perlman's other banjo books) highly enough.

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-07-18

This book takes you to an incredibly advanced level from the very basics. It is hands down the best instructional book I've ever read- not just for clawhammer, but out of all books I've read for guitar, Dobro, autoharp, etc... You will be a wonderful frailer if you buy this book and stick at it.

5 out of 5 stars Great place to start playing banjo.......2005-08-24

As a bluegrass player this book totally demystified the process of clawhammer. I highly recommend getting the DVD with the book. I was up and running in no time. I'm still working thru the book as we speak, but I feel like a I have a good grip on it. Ken starts off very slow and dissects the action and rythmn of clawhammer banjo. The best part is that this book keeps giving, plenty of tunes and much to learn after you get the basics.

5 out of 5 stars most comprehensive teaching guide.......2005-03-23

Ken Perlman's book has been around for almost 30 years and, with the sentimental exception of Pete Seeger's "How to Play the 5 String Banjo", is clearly the leading "how to" book on this unique style of play. However comprehensive and well written a book is if you don't get the earliest lesson down pat you're gonna be dead meat when things speed up down the road. If you don't have a competent teacher and are trying to learn from any book alone clawhammer, more than any other picking style, will beat you into the ground.

Fortunately for those of us too cheap to hire an instructor Perlman has produced a 2 DVD (originally VHS) set that bests most teachers for clarity and continuity in following the text of this excellent book. I can't recommend highly enough just how effective the book and DVD combination is. You'll save years of struggle and have a great time learning this most fascinating style of play. A great book made much better with the available video.

5 out of 5 stars The Clawhammer Bible!.......2005-02-22

This book is the most well organized, clear, and fun book on clawhammer I have ever encountered. If you are a clawhammer banjo teacher, as I am, this book is absolutely essential for you and your students. I especially apprecite Ken's attention to detail, the accurate rhythmic notation (which is often less then desirable in clawhammer books), and the generous amount of songs within the book. If there's a clawhammer equivalent to Earl Scrugg's book, this is it.

Entitled "A Manual on How to Play the 5-String Banjo for the Complete Ignoramus!," it literally taught thousands of total beginners to play the banjo. On its 31st anniversary, Wayne has completely re-written the book based on having taught banjo for another 31 years. The new Ignoramus banjo book features painfully simple instructions on playing thirty tunes in clawhammer style. 5 out of 5 stars Great book for learning Clawhammer banjo.......2007-01-06

Nothing beats sitting knee to knee with another person to learn an instrument but this book is a good substitute. I've been playing Clawhammer banjo for a few years and am more of an intermediate to advanced player, and even know this book is officially for beginners, I found this book to be very helpful in honing my techniques, seeing new techniques and learing additional songs. I especially like the fact that the lyrics for the songs is included, most books and DVD's on clawhammer banjo exclude the lyrics. I would recommend the book to anyone who plays or wants to learn clawhammer banjo.

5 out of 5 stars Wayne writes a great book and is a great teacher!.......2006-07-03

I bought this book when I was a student in Wayne's class, here outside Asheville, NC. Wayne is an incredible teacher and I will be eternally grateful for him being my mentor and introduction to old time music.

Even if you can't be taught by Wayne himself, the book is great. The book includes 16 or 17 of the "classic" old time songs, arranged wonderfully for the beginner. The accompanying CD is also great. Each song is played in two speeds, slow with only the banjo part, and a medium tempo version with a guitar accompanyment.

Wonderful stuff, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use and a superb supplement.......2004-08-07

Enhanced with an accompanying CD, Clawhammer Banjo For The Complete Ignoramus! is a basic introduction to the clawhammer banjo by Wayne Erbsen -- president of Native Ground Music and an acclaimed banjo picker in his own right! Filled with sample songs to practice by, tips, hints, and clues, advice for either cultivating "picking nails" or buying artificial nails if that is impossible, basic techniques such as different means of tuning and how to use a capo, and much more, Clawhammer Banjo For The Complete Ignoramus! is easy to use and a superb supplement, especially for the self-taught beginner.

      Book Description

Southern Appalachian native Dan Levenson and Mel Bay Publications present Clawhammer Banjo from Scratch - A Guide for the Claw-less! This book teaches clawhammer banjo the way we play, not the way others say. It really begins as though you really have NO knowledge of how to play the five string banjo clawhammer style. Based on Dan's innovative Meet the Banjo™ program (where Dan brings 15 banjos and teaches players who may have never held a banjo), this book assumes no prior experience. Beginning at the beginning, Dan presents a brief history of the 5-string banjo then goes over the parts of the banjo, holding the banjo, right and left hand positions and his basic clawhammer strum. Even the strum is broken down into the steps of the finger and thumb. You are guided through the chords, the scale and then the individual notes of each of 12 jam session favorite tunes from scratch. Includes 2 reference CD's with all exercises, tunes (slow and up to speed), and a fiddle version of each tune.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good book, but not the best available.......2005-03-22

This is a good beginning tutorial for clawhammer style banjo and does assume the reader has no prior musical experience, just as the author states. However, like Pete Seeger's hallowed tome "How to Play the 5 String Banjo", Dan Levenson starts the student off in a tuning that will present him with challenges down the road. Seeger even states in the most current edition of "How to Play..." that if he had the time to revise his book one of the first things he would change would be to start off the student in "G" tuning. While this might seem like a minor detail it's just as agravating as the occassional book employing non standard tablature.

My recommendation for anyone (new or experienced) who wants to learn the instrument in this style would be to get Ken Perlman's "Clawhammer Style Banjo" AND the available DVD's that follow the text. While some reviewers have faulted this book as being a little too advanced for them, the videos do a wonderful job of presenting the technical material in a manner that provides easy access to the more comprhensive material. Levenson's book has videos available as well but his teaching methods, while undoubtedly effective, are somewhat unique. That isn't a put down as "Clawhammer Banjo from Scratch" is a good book, just not one you can grow with as easily as Perlman's.

Most students will wind up with a number of books anyway and it's often beneficial to have the same information presented in different ways. For some, "Clawhammer Banjo from Scratch" will undoubtedly be just the ticket to unlocking the frailing banjo's potential. For me, it was Perlman's book and videos.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!! This is THE clawhammer banjo book for rookies.......2004-06-28

This book is awesome. Thank you Dan. After struggling with other books, this book really made it happen for me. I am a real banjo player now! Going to get the companion DVDs next.

Dan is an excellent teacher -- the guy I take some lessons with (an AMAZING player) says he could have saved himself 5 years if this book had been out 20 years ago!

5 out of 5 stars [Clawhammer Banjo Review].......2002-01-24

      ....

Be that as it may, this is a wonderful book to develope a basic repertoire of Appalachian mountain tunes on the banjo. If you're a beginner, get this, but don't use it until you've worked from some of the simpler books such as Muller's "Frailing the 5-String Banjo."

The clawhammer style of playing a banjo is essentially single string frailing. It's origins lie in the old fiddle tunes from the Appalachians. The primary focus of Krassen's book is the clawhammer style centered around Galax, Virginia/Mt. Airy, north Carolina/Bluefield, West Virginia.

Once you've learned a little about the basic banjo strum and other essentials, Krassen's book is the place to go to get a feel for some basic arrangements of old-time standards. What I particularly like about Krassen's arrangements is that each tune is set out in a very simple to read tablature; each tab in turn lays out a basic bare-bones structure for each tune. These arrangements in turn are perfect for allowing the banjoist to incorporate sundry other techniques to flesh out a tune when accompanying a fiddle player.

Krassen emphasizes two important themes regarding clawhammer banjo playing: (1) the primary rhythmic aspect of the banjo, rather than melodic and (2) the importance of using the banjo to highlight only essential notes of the melody and letting the fiddle do the talking.

You won't find very much in terms of instruction here. That's done much better in other books. But if you've developed some competence in the basics of playing...it's a resourceful place to go next in your development.

3 out of 5 stars Not a good beginning clawhammer book........2001-11-24

If you are an intermediate player trying to pick up some really great (and challenging) arrangements of simple tunes then this book is for you. It has lots of great favorites like Soldier's Joy, Shady Grove, Shortnin' Bread, etc, and lots of obscure songs like Lonesome John and Old Jawbone. This new take on the classic melodies can be refreshing for the intermediate player looking for new ways to approach those melodies they've played so many times before. For a beginner, however, it can be frustrating to try to learn these common tunes from this book. There is a lot of drop thumbing involved and other little things (ie- the Galax lick) that can easily throw the beginner off from the melodies.

This is the book I bought when I wanted to learn clawhammer banjo. I found it hard to work with from the get-go. I used it occassionally with little progress. I chugged away and learned basic melodies and rhythms from other sources. I then re-visited the book and found that it gave me many new takes on songs I'd learned elsewhere. I picked up little flares and tricks to enhance melodies from this book. I would recommend it as a supplemental resource, not a primary one for learning.

Krassen's arrangements are based on the playing of many great old-time musicians like Kyle Creed, Wade Ward, Fred Cockerham, Glen Smith, and Frank George. These guys were all excellent banjo players and these arrangements reflect their playing. They are complex and frustrating, but once you bury yourself in them they can be wonderful and refreshing.

This book includes a recording of a few tunes from the book, although you'll have to figure out for yourself their titles since there is no track listing. Also included is lots of good historical information on Appalachian dance music, recordings, tune histories, and banjos in general. The beginning explanation of clawhammer technique is not very good. I would recommend learning the basics from someone who plays rather than trying to pick it up from this book because it is quick and confusing.

      4 out of 5 stars recommended.......2001-10-18

Ok, so the best way to learn banjo is by ear, but I learned alot from this book. It was the first clawhammer book I ever picked up and I had no previous banjo experience. I think that this book along with listening to alot of recordings took me along way towards learning to play. I would certainly recommend it. My only criticism is that I wish that there were more tab variations offered for more tunes, but still, it is a great collection.

Provides the intermediate clawhammer (5-string) banjo player with a fresh repertoire of 21 traditional and 5 original tunes as played by the author with the Boiled Buzzards Old Time String Band. The book briefly addresses clawhammer basics with a few pages of exercises and scales before presenting the tunes. The banjo tunings in this book are: double C tuning (gCGCD), modified double C tuning (eCGCD), G tuning (GDGBD), A tuning (aEAC#E), D tuning (aDADE), and Double-D tuning drop 5th (f#DADE). Written in banjo tablature only with suggested backup chords. Voted one of the top 10 clawhammer banjo players by "Banjo Newsletter" readers, Levenson advises the reader that the tablature in this book is to be used only as a guide and to "play the tune as you hear it, not slavishly as written". This approach allows the reader to play within his/her style and level of ability.

              Product Description

This book presents more than 70 tunes in the unique highly developed clawhammer style known as "Round Peak" -named after the Blue Ridge Mountain, North Carolina community where it originated. While not intended for the absolute beginner, this book will benefit players at various experience levels. Tunes in the book are organized according to the specific banjo tuning used, with A and D tunings most prominent. Much of the book's commentary and the included CD recording is directed towards the fretless variant of the 5-string banjo but as these tunes are written in standard 5-string banjo tablature, they can most definitely be played on the more common fretted instrument. Includes tune lyrics and extensive historical and biographical notes plus technical tips and a discography. Written in 5-string banjo tablature only.

              2 out of 5 stars Hrmm..........2007-09-12

This book comes highly recommended by Round Peak style experts, and does a fair job at walking you through the mechanics of Round Peak style, but frankly, most of the songs included on the accompanying CD sound like variations upon a few themes rather than distinct songs.

As I was going through the CD, I was struck at how many of the songs sounded the same. By the last track, I was extremely disappointed. It's a bit deeper than just surface-level similarities - in my opinion, this book covers about 5 "themes", expanded into about 30 "songs". In fact, you could probably learn the 5 themes and just improvise around the themes to get the same net effect.

If you are looking to learn a banjo playing style AND some memorable songs, this might not be your best bet - this book doesn't quite deliver.

3 out of 5 stars Round Peak Style Clawhammer Banjo - Brad Leftwich.......2005-11-19

Here is another book where you listen to the authors playing and you get tabs that sort of resemble the songs being played. The tiny bit of instruction in the beginning lets you know you bought this book mostly to listen. Some interesting comments about the fretless banjo, but again, VERY little instuction and none really on the CD. At least, the author takes the time to match up the CD tracks to the tabulature in the book but all the songs are played at jam speed. On the plus side, the included CD is a good one to have. If you already know how to play clawhammer banjo you can learn a lot about Round Peak style and also pick up more than a few licks from this fat book and its 82 tunes.

5 out of 5 stars A must if you want to learn the Round Peak Sound.......2005-08-12

A great addition to my collection of banjo how to books. Brad Leftwich has this sound down pat. I find the tabs easy to use, provided you read the how to part, and with the accompanying CD the banjo player can hear each tune played the way it is supposed to be played. I especially enjoyed the short stories about the history of each tune.

4 out of 5 stars Treasure of Old Time Songs.......2002-02-28

This round peak style book is fantastic in that is has all the old time songs I have ever wanted to learn. It is not for the beginner though. The tab notation is a bit hard to figure out but it is possible.

4 out of 5 stars Who does Eudaley think he is?.......2001-03-09

Chris Eudaley is your average everyday stoner with much enthusiasm for his hobbie. The book is short, yet to the point, with good info for the novice and an interesting outlook to ponder for the "Star". The chapters are well organized and his reprinted Cannibis Cup editorial piece is intriguing while informative. I liked it alot!

                4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2000-12-17

Although the book is rather short, I found it rather funny and informative. Even though the advanced smoker may not find anything new in this book, beginner smokers should find enough information here to awaken the desire to find the answers to the more detailed questions they will have later.

                  Book Description

This collection of essays was selected from those presented in October 1988 at a conference sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, "Concepts of History in German Cinema." The contributors include notable historians, film scholars, and German studies specialists who explore the complex network of social, political, and religious institutions that have influenced the historiography of German cinema and television.

Before the turn of the century, Germans began to employ the medium of film to represent the past when they attempted to document their Prussian heritage. Since then, German cinema and television have promoted history as a component of personal, cultural, and national identity by consistently providing prominent treatment of historical subjects.

Although it is relatively easy to document changes in the selection and handling of these subjects, it is more difficult to determine precisely which factors have motivated those changes.

In attempting to define these factors, the link between German cinema, television, and history has developed around three interrelated issues: (1) the reception of Weimar cinema, which for most film scholars continues to be mediated to one extent or another by Siegfried Kracauer’s work; (2) the inscribing of fascism in cinema and television; and (3) the nature of, and potential for, alternatives to mainstream cinema and television.
