5 out of 5 stars Amazing photographs. Amazing quality........2005-01-09

I spend so much time in book stores looking through photography books that it is rare these days for a book to grab my attention. One flip through this book, and I had to stop for a moment, sit down, and study closely each one of these photos.

The quality of these prints reproduced from large 4 x 5 inch negatives is unbelievable. It is like the first time you saw HD television after watching regular TV all your life.

Cornish's images are moody, often capturing the warm glow of sunrises and late afternoons. Besides each photo, Cornish explains the thought process and planning that was involved. At the end of the book there is a thumbnail of each photograph along the with the film, camera, lens, filter, shutter speed, and aperature used to shoot the photo.

If you are tired of the same old photography books showing the same places you have seen a hundred times over, then this book will knock your socks off.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on a way of 'seeing' the landscape.......2003-11-08

Joe Cornish has a growing reputation. Joe has been illustrating books and photographing the UK landscape for the National Trust of England and Wales for many years. After building his reputation in this way, he now focuses on landscape photography.
This collection of images gives the technical information that many photographers crave about each image. But more than that, it is a lesson in 'seeing'and can inspire you to gain confidence to develop your own way of seeing and to follow your own vision.
This is not a 'how to' book, but one that will inspire you because the way Joe has developed his own way of seeing and expressing that with the camera is so distinctive. I disagree entirely with the earlier review that gives this book only 3 stars. A photograph may be technically correct in its exposure and its time of day. But it is only as good in the eye of the beholder to the degree that it reflects your own taste. If it is not to the taste of the earlier reviewer, that view is to be entirely respected. But don't let that put you off looking at this book and making up your own mind. Joe really is just as artistic and able as William Neill, Jack Dykinga and any other of the top landscape photographers.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Pictures, but Not Great.......2003-03-27

This is a collection of Cornish's color landscape photographs taken around the world, mostly with a 4 by 5-inch view camera. Each picture is accompanied by a description of the circumstances under which the picture was taken. There is also a smaller picture taken of the same subject or at the same time that is contrasted with the larger photograph.

The photographer is clearly concerned with light in the landscape. Many pictures show the red glow of "magic hours" or reflections of water, or cloudy skies. Cornish's photographs are lovely, but there is nothing outstanding about them. Once upon a time this book might have been at the cutting edge. But we now live in a world where first-class landscapes are offered to us in every automobile advertisement so that to capture our eye, an image must be exceptional.

Nor is there any common theme among the landscapes that might lead you to look at them because you have an interest in the subject matter. I would have felt proud to have taken any of these pictures. However, I wouldn't expect many people to lay out good money for such a book when there are so many other outstanding works by world class photographers, unless they already owned everything by Ansel Adams or Galen Rowell or Art Wolfe.

I must confess that this book was not what I expected. The publisher, Amphoto Books, usually puts out "how-to" books, and I expected something like Galen Rowell's "Mountain Light" that would deal with using light to create better pictures while at the same time presenting a great portfolio. I am certain most serious landscape photographers would be highly interested in a new book on this subject. But the only way you are going to learn anything from this book is by analyzing each picture yourself at great length, and extracting some photographic principle from your analysis. To be fair, technical information is provided on each picture and the accompanying discussions occasionally present a few of the considerations in using light in landscapes, like the effect of long exposures and the special results of early morning and late day light. Unfortunately I don't find this information very educational for either the beginner or the more experienced photographer. For the beginner, I would recommend either John Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide" or his "Landscape Photography" (the former was recently printed and reflects the changes in technology of the last few years, but does not have quite as much detail about landscapes). The more experienced photographer will be more interested in "Fine Art Nature Photography: Advanced Techniques and the Creative Process" by Tony Sweet. Sweet's book also uses single pictures on a page with discussion, but the photos are extraordinary and the discussion instructive.

1 out of 5 stars This has to be one of the most careless adaptions, EVER........2007-08-03

Before this book there were multiple versions of the Stormbringer (BRP) system, changed somewhat and renamed 'Elric!' and then changed back to Stormbringer again.

This book is nothing but a cut & paste job by a company obviously not at all interested or informed on making a d20 product.

There's two types of customers who may look at this product:

If you really are into Elric and want a faithful adaption, avoid this product. (Except maybe at the $4.99 level.)

If you know nothing about Elric and just want some wild ideas that are interesting (but ultimately busted), this product might prove a measure of worth.

I am the former, and my rating reflects this.

I guess the best way to describe just how careless the conversion was is to show some "stats" on a few saga personalities:

      Dyvim Slorm (Level 8 Aristocrat/Level 7 Wizard)
(Um... didn't Slorm ride a dragon at the end and do pretty well with Mournblade? And when did he use magic?!? Didn't Melnibone fall when he was fairly young?)

      Magum Colim (Level 4 Expert (Sailor)/Level 6 Fighter/Level 6 Wizard)
(What's up with another arbitrary wizard?)

And the tin foil hat award goes to...

      Dyvim Tvar (Level 7 Fighter/Level 7 Wizard)
(So his son is an Aristocrat and he is not?!? And yet ANOTHER wizard. Grrr... anyone who has forgotten about Tvar's reaction to sorcery might want to read a few pages into "The Ship Which Sails Over Land and Sea" from "Elric of Melnibone" again. The terrible drawing of him and the gaggleload of "demon items" [he, and almost everyone has] only adds to all this.)

These are just the very basics. Seriously, do a google search outside of Amazon and you'll see what I mean.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre and rushed adaptation..........2002-01-18

I was very disappointed when this product came out.
Potentially it could have been the highlight of the early d20 system's open license, but the producers did a very 2nd rate job of putting together the materials.
The presentation was no better then a novice could've accomplished on a home pc. The artwork was old, the organisation was not updated at all for the new book and directly borrowed from prior products.
This setting is just waiting for someone who really cares to adapt it in a good light instead of rushing to make a quick buck.
I expected more from such a fine company as Chaosium.

5 out of 5 stars A complete role gaming adventure.......2001-06-09

Based upon the popular Michael Moorcock fantasy novels, Dragon Lords Of Melnibone offers the players a complete role gaming adventure in a dark world where the forces of law and chaos clash. Players are provided with a complete description of this mystical world of Young Kingdoms and such strange races as Melniboneans and the Myyrrhn; magic and religion; demons, monsters, folk and heroes; and a gaming system that is riveting from first to last. Of particular value is The Dungeon Masters Companion section including reference guides for campaigns, mass combats, effects of chaos, scenarios, allegiances, three forces, enchantments, rumors, a character sheet template, and user friendly index. Wonderfully illustrated throughout, Dragon Lords Of Melnibone is a very highly recommended addition to any dedicated role gamer's reference and player collection.

4 out of 5 stars I can only hope this is the beginning.......2001-04-27

For those that are NOT familiar with the idea, WOTC has offered an 'Open Game License' to any publisher that would like to contribute to the further growth of the d20 system that has been implemented with D&D3Ed.

Chaosium, the fine purveyors of Call of Cthulhu (for many many years) and the oft relaunched RPG versions of the Elric of Melnibone have thrown their hat in the d20 ring with this first offering.

DLoM is Elric d20... it's that simple. And the folks at Chaosium have not let us down. The package is tight, conscice and filled to the brim with vital info for running a d20 Young Kingdoms campaign.

All the main players atre faithfully presented, details for adapting Melnibonean and Pan-Tangean magic to the d20 formula and the surprising detail of summonings and pacts that were so vital to the Elric storyline all contibute to an amazing package.

If you love Elric, then this is the game for you... now... when do we get Hawkmoon and Corum?

      5 out of 5 stars Wow d20 Elric!.......2001-03-29

To be totally honest I have been waiting for this book for the last couple of months. Elric in the Dungeons and Dragons world brings back memories of playing as a kid with Deities & Demigods ( a book that I treasure to this day). Dragon Lords makes the Deit & Demi material look like a pamphlet. So much powerful source material. Stats for the dragons of Melnibone', Elric, & Stormbringer. New skills (conceal object), feats, (close-order fighting), races (full and half Melnibonean) and even new spells and weapons. The new alignment system seems very workable.

As with any new material, only thorough reading and hours of playing will show which aspects of the book will be inserted into your D&D world. This book is a great start to what will hopefully be a long line of d20 Melnibonean products.

Buy the book, then go reread Sailor on the Sea of Fate to get you ready for the world of Law and Chaos.

Alan Clayson continues his chronicles of the great personalities of rock with this in-depth portrait of the Rolling Stones' ace drummer.

          4 out of 5 stars Life of a Stone.......2004-11-18

This bio of Charlie Watts is pretty interesting. It's not just about the glamour of being a Rolling Stone, however quiet. It's actually very informative as to the kind of musical influences that Charlie had, to what he did not only as a Rolling Stone. Overall it's much better than most rock stars' bios but it's true, there is no spark.

          2 out of 5 stars Huh?.......2004-10-20

I'm a huge Charlie Watts fan, and was delighted to see a "biography" about him finally published. But this book is more about the UK jazz and "beat" scene of the early 1960s, and uses Charlie quotes from numerous sources (admitting that he would not respond to requests by the author for a new interview) that I've read a million times before. Nothing new, and the prose employed by author Clayson quickly tires, leaving the reader exasperated, wondering if the true facts about Charlie and his private life could fill a three page pamphlet. If the subject is truly a private individual, a revealing portrait is tough. Charlie is a truly private individual, and this is a tough read!

Charlie George, Here is Charlie George.....

I must say that I truly enjoyed this book. Of course, I am a bit biased because Charlie George was my favorite Arsenal player even though I could only really read about him and the team from imported newspapers. I expected the book to be light-hearted and a bit whimsical and that is what I got. Charlie does talk about his faults but he does not dwell on them which to me was refreshing. Too many times I have read books by athletes and they dwell too much on defending themselves from the attacks of others. Charlie just tells his story and leaves it at that.

If you are a Charlie George fan or an Arsenal supoorter then I would suggest picking this one up because there are some amusing stories.

3 out of 5 stars Interested in broadcasting and Texas? This book's for you!.......2001-06-11

A mostly-successful survey of the early years of radio and television in Texas, the book is filled with interesting anecdotes, particularly with respect to the construction of WBAP-TV in Fort Worth, the first television station in the Lone Star State. Among the book's imperfections: it is rather sloppily edited, and the author's bias against the University of Texas is evident. But I would expect no better from a publication emanating from Texas A & M.

                Book Description

Precisely how and why radio developed as it did is a fascinating story, told with authority in this book. Of interest to both the specialist and the general reader, this history concentrates on the years between 1920 and 1930 in the United States when radio was rapidly growing and changing. It covers all important areas in the development of the radio industry: business, programming, regulation, finance, the manufacturing of radio sets and equipment, the development of technology, the rise of networks, and the flowering of radio as a medium of entertainment and news.
