Book Description
While twentieth-century Shanghai has received extensive scholarly treatment, the nineteenth century has remained understudied, even though it encompasses the first half-century of Shanghai's growth as a treaty port and the early years of Chinese-foreign contact. Published in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, the Dianshizhai Pictorial provides a record of the new urban popular culture that emerged in Shanghai's foreign settlements during this period.
Ye Xiaoqing has based this study on the Dianshizhai's detailed illustrations of everyday life at home, in commercial establishments, and in Shanghai's public areas. Her introduction to the more than one hundred drawings presented here points to the social background, lifestyle, and intellectual outlook of the Dianshizhai's literati writers and artists, the weakness of gentry control in the foreign settlements, and the commercialization and "modern" material culture that made Shanghai distinctive. The drawings and commentaries of the Dianshizhai contrast the settlements with "traditional" culture and urban life in the adjacent Chinese city and vividly convey items of interest--from the quotidian to the bizarre--highlighting local fascination with and anxiety at the rapid changes in Shanghai's increasingly cosmopolitan society.
Ye Xiaoqing is Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies, Macquarie University in Sydney.
Book Description
In this second volume of Karl Kraus: Apocalyptic Satirist, Edward Timms takes up Kraus’s story in November 1918, when the satirist responded to the creation of the new republics with a defiant hope, invoking international law against the dual threat of reactionary politics and irresponsible media. While contemporaries like Walter Benjamin regarded Kraus as heroically isolated, this book places him within a dynamic field of cultural production. Timms highlights the court cases Kraus pursued with his lawyer Oskar Samek and the theatrical projects that earned him Brecht’s friendship.
In the final section of the book, the author refutes the legend that Kraus responded with stunned silence to Hitler’s seizure of power. His career culminated in Third Walpurgis Night, an analysis of Nazi ideology that has proved enduringly influential. Timms concludes that Kraus’s lifelong critique of the media, combining Orwell’s political radicalism with Joyce’s linguistic playfulness, incisively anticipates the propaganda techniques of our own age.

Book Description
Since unification, fears of resurgent German nationalism have mounted. In particular, many believe United Germany is reverting to a xenophobic nationalist stance. Peter O'Brien argues that these fears are exaggerated. He documents in the Federal Republic's policies a longstanding, steadily increasing committment to the liberal principles of the Basic Law which protect foreigners against hostile German nationalism. The author goes on to criticize the very entrenched liberalism which holds German nationalism in check. He traces among West German political elites the appeal and uses of "technocratic liberalism"--an overzealous protection of German's liberal democracy which, paradoxically, preventss minority groups from achieving full rights of political participation.
Beyond the Swastika is both unconventional and orginal. Peter O'Brien resists the widespread alarmist temptation to distort the political influence of German nationalism and instead uncovers sources of inequality in German liberalism which have until now gone unnoticed.

Zac at RMS........2004-03-11
this book is about a large group (500,000) of children that were forced to join part of Adolf Hitlers NAZI regime.
Hitler mixed fun with paramilitary training to lure in the trust of the german children. One of the ex-hitler youth members stated that they played games and took field trips but they also learned about spy training and sabotage. during the later years of ww2 (1944) berlin was hitlers last strond hold and it was a pathetic hold at that. hitler sent men and boys ranging from10 to 70 to fight for his beloved land. out of the fivethousand that were sent in only 50 made it out alive.

Book Description
Surviving the Swastika examines scientific research under National Socialism through the prism of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Advancement of the Sciences, a semi-private umbrella organization which founded and maintained institutes for basic scientific research. Home to over twenty Nobel-prize winning scientists, the prestigious forerunner of the Max Planck Society was at the forefront of scientific advance in the first half of the twentieth century. Surprisingly, the Society not only survived National Socialism, but often thrived. Kristie Macrakis provides a full-scale analysis of the Society's development within the context of the phases of a polycratic National Socialist state. A spectrum of responses to National Socialism existed there from moral probity to accommodation and opportunism. Macrakis uncovers this differentiated scientific and social landscape by covering topics ranging from Max Planck's failed negotiations with recalcitrant government officials regarding the expulsion of Jews and Communists to his success in securing a thriving community for basic biological research in Berlin-Dahlem, from the practice of nuclear power research to institutional growth.

Book Description
This is the first incisive and revealing exploration of the meaning, mysteries, and misunderstanding of the most powerful symbol in the history of mankind. The book analyzes the swastika's pre-Nazi religious and commercial uses in all of its varied permutations, the Nazi appropriation and misuses of the form, and its contemporary applications as both a racist and an apolitical icon. Tracing the symbol to its beginnings in antiquity, the author explores the myth and cult of swastika lore and its evolving use as a commercial trademark and logo, then speculates on the future of the symbol in two final, thought-provoking chapters, "The Swastika Revisited: Today and Tomorrow" and "Hitler's Children: Rock and Roll."
Steven Heller, a New York Times senior art director, AIGA Journal of Graphic Design editor, and author of more than seventy books, lives in New York.
Customer Reviews:
It's not the sign that counts, it's how you use it!.......2005-03-16
Although I did find this book a very interesting read, I thought it was somewhat lacking in information on the ancient history of this potent symbol (and it is ancient). It does contain a brief overview of the places and people whom the swastika had meaning (basically everyone), but hardly enough to satisfy me (but this is a personal preference).
What is not left to be desired is the imagery this book contains, which I feel, is well worth the purchase price. However at least one mistake is made in attributing an image to its owner (CD for the band The Residents that is wrongly attributed to Sacred Reich).
I have always believed the swastika a powerful, and much maligned human symbol, and I for one am ready to discard its recent history as a disturbing episode in an otherwise brilliant career.
Remember: It's not the sign that counts, it's how you use it!
SPLENDID!.......2004-09-18
Here's three good things about this book.
First, the 157 pages of text provide a comprehensive overview of the history of the you-know-what-symbol. The swastika. There's a lot of interesting revelations. For example, the swastika appears to be the oldest symbol uncovered anywhere, and is found in just about every culture and civilization, everywhere and at any time in History. I mean, it was everywhere!
Second, the book provides dozens of reproductions of the swastika, in a myriad of variants, including on cigar labels, poker chips, cards, as a shoulder patch for the U.S. Army (1918), and on a monthly American magazine for young girls, entitled: "The Swastika: Written, Issued and Read by The Girl's Club."
Finally, the author is a graphic designer, and a darn good one. The book itself--the size, the color, the paper, the setting of the text, the brilliant and varied reproductions--these all delighted me, and I hope they delight you.
Not only that, consider that the bookjacket has to be one of the most extreme, hardcore bookcovers in history. The cover shows a black swastika, on a white circle, on a red background. One glance at it, and you'll know why the swastika is the most powerful symbol ever created. Forever sinister, the swastika today is the only symbol that you can write with a pen on the border of the daily paper, that has acquired the status of "genetically evil." Those scribblings on the notepad--they will never be redeemed! Hollywood is calling.
Take a peek.
Symbol beyond Redemption? by Steven Heller.......2004-02-22
Steven Heller's book about the "Symbol Beyond Redemption?" is very informative. It needs updating with more recent information about the topic addressed. For example, the notorious flag symbol of the National Socialist German Workers Party, although an ancient symbol, was altered for use as overlapping S-letters for 'socialism' under the National Socialist German Workers' Party. It was deliberately turned 45 degrees counter clockwise and always oriented in the S-direction. Similar alphabetic symbolism is still visible as Volkswagen logos. American socialists (e.g. Edward Bellamy teamed with the Theosophical Society) bear some blame for evolving the shape as alphabetical symbolism for socialism, adopted later by German socialists. Edward Bellamy was the author of an international bestseller that launched the nationalism movement, and his book was translated into every major language, including German. American socialists also share some blame for the notorious stiff-arm salute of German National Socialism. Edward was cousin to Francis Bellamy, author of the Pledge Of Allegiance (1892) and the early Pledge used the straight arm salute, and the Pledge was used at civic meetings of the Theosophical Society, Freemasons and other groups before it spread to Germany. Francis and Edward were both self-proclaimed socialists in the Nationalism movement and they promoted military socialism. They wanted government to take over all schools and impose robotic chanting to flags. The Pledge's early salute was not an ancient Roman salute, and the 'ancient Roman salute' myth came from the Pledge. All of the above are modern discoveries by the nation's leading authority on the Pledge of Allegiance, the author of "Pledge of Allegiance Secrets." People were persecuted for refusing to perform robotic chanting to the national flag at the same time in the USA and Germany (to the American flag, and to the German symbol flag). The socialist dogma led to the socialist Wholecost: 60 million dead under the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; 50 million under the Peoples' Republic of China; 20 million under the National Socialist German Workers Party. It might be the most tragic part of world history.
Terrifying Visual Anthropology.......2000-09-20
What a pleasure it is to experience the work of an author who has total command over his material. In a slender 160 pages, the author explains -- in both words and pictures -- the mythology, anthropology, abuse, and endurance of this fascinating and lurid symbol. This is one of the most interesting books on fascist regalia written in recent years.
