Read by the Author!!
"I'm always reminding people that the one constant you can count on is that things happen--and usually when you're not in the mood for them."
It's now a proven medical fact that good humor reduces the negative effects of stress. Over the course of twenty years, millions of people have learned this lesson while being entertained and enlightened by Loretta LaRoche in one of her enormously popular series of lectures given in public seminars; in corporate environments for clients like IBM, Reebok, Fidel-ity Investments, and Blue Cross, Blue Shield; and most recently in nationwide broadcasts on public television. Now she puts her sensible, sensational philosophy on paper--and gives readers the tools they need to laugh themselves to less stress and better health.
"One night I greeted Bob at the door wearing nothing but his wing-tipped shoes. I was laughing hysterically about how I looked. Bob didn't crack a smile. Instead, he bellowed, 'What are the neighbors going to think?'
" 'I don't know,' I replied, 'I haven't shown them yet.' "
Loretta LaRoche has been called "the Erma Bombeck of stress reduction"--and in the helpful and hilarious pages of this book, her enormous talent for finding the funny detail to defuse even the most difficult situation has never been sharper.
"Buy something silly and wear it. A Groucho Marx nose, mustache, and glasses are my favorite. When the stress seems unbearable, when you've really reached the limits of your endurance, go into a bathroom, look into the mirror, put on your glasses, and ask yourself, 'How serious is this?' "
Relax--You May Only Have a Few Minutes Left is filled with practical exercises, hilarious anecdotes, and specific advice for coming to terms with today's ever-increasing stress levels--it is a remedy for anxiety and a prescription for laughter.
"Most of us don't realize what an impact we have on the world around us. A positive energy field is going to affect others in a beneficial way, even if you don't notice it at first. Why not ask for a standing ovation once in a while? When you go in to work, say, 'I came in--it wasn't easy. I could have gone somewhere else. I'd like a standing ovation.' "
In sections like "If You Don't Have to Suffer--Don't Practice," "My Mother the CEO," and "I'm Not Afraid of Heights, Just Widths," LaRoche dismantles our American predilection for taking ourselves too seriously and shows us how to live longer, happier lives using the healing power of the absurd.

her heart's in the right place...........2006-05-12
...but I couldn't wait for this book to be over. Her blanket statements in each chapter really got on my nerves, i.e. "Food has almost become poison in our society. We never come home to great smells simmering on the stove anymore." How does she know this? Or, "now it's always the phone or the answering machine. People get home and head right for the machine." Um, maybe it's because we want to hear who called? Loretta says she "finally realized that trying to be thin is at odds with my Sicilian roots.". Hm...sounds like she just doesn't want to cut back her food portions and exercise more. Her life seems to have been really messed up, and it seems like she overcame her obstacles with her brand of "humor", but her writing did not inspire me, and her "hilarious" stories didn't make me laugh. One star.
Insightfully Funny.......2003-06-25
I checked this book out of the library to help me during a depression. I'd already watched Loretta's video, "The Joy of Stress" during treadmill workouts and laughed myself silly. Periodically bursting out laughing while reading "Relax--You May Have Only a Few Minutes Left" I decided to buy the book. Loretta's wit and humor are excellent tools to help reframe a negative focus, and to look at things in a more positive light even by accepting the absurdity around us. While Loretta's insights are remarkably simple they are also profound, particularly in the way they inspire change within us. With Loretta's help I've found that laughing is way more fun than whining!
A Bore.......2002-01-20
Loretta is very funny and worth watching on TV. The tapes just don't make it. I have yet (6 mos after purchase) to get through the second one.
Hilarious!.......2001-06-15
I have the audio cassettes and pop them into my car stereo every few months. Loretta Laroche cracks me up! Her sense of humor is wonderful. It's a great thing to listen to when you're stressed out from work, stuck in traffic, or just feeling down. I recommended the book/tapes to all of my friends!
WOW -- Hillarious.......2001-02-28
I never thought to use humor to reduce my stress, especially at work. Her stories of her family and personal events helped me to see all of the funny things that really stressed me out that would fall into the category of "the little stuff." I really enjoyed the anticdotes as well. There was a drawback, there are a few things that she doesn't discuss in detial therefore making it hard to try them, but over all this is a very good book for all of you who are stressed to the max.

Practical humor.......2007-07-20
The author gives a number of helpful practical methods for the development of humor in every day life. So many times we read of the importance of humor but seldom any exercises or practices we can put to use. This was a very helpful resource for me while researching my article.
Book Description
Gems from the classical literature written for the violin, together with effective arrangements of light popular compositions. Every piece in this exhaustive compilation has been edited and fingered, and includes piano accompaniment.
Customer Reviews:
a great collection!.......2001-03-14
I was looking for pieces to play for the reception of my aunt's wedding and this book really came in handy. There's familiar pieces we're played as a child like Bach's Loure and Gossec's Gavotte(for those of you that were brought up in teh Suzuki violin method); but also pieces that practice trills, pizzicato, and double stops. The pieces are arranged in an intermediate level with nothing going above the third position. A great book to bring back the fun of violin playing (and realizing all those scale exercise really do come in handy! ;) )

Murderous Maids
ASIN: 0198160119 |
Book Description
The 1933 killing by the Papin sisters of their mistress and her daughter was an act of unexampled violence by women against women, whose repercussions have been felt in French culture ever since. It received wide journalistic coverage at the time, and subsequently prominent literary figures such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and Jean Genet have dealt with the case, which has also formed the basis of a stage play (by Wendy Kesselmann) and films by Nico Papatakis, Nancy Meckler and Claude Chabrol. The case casts fascinating light on French provincial life between the wars, the role of women (especially unmarried ones) in French society, and French views of the criminal outsider. Its impact on psychoanalytic discourse, through the work first of Jacques Lacan, then of Francis Dupre and Marie-Magdeleine Lessana, has also been considerable, notably in its contribution to the development of the key notion of the mirror-phase. The almost obsessive recurrence of the case makes of it a fascinating prism through which to examine multiple aspects of recent French culture.

Book Description
How have society's values and attitudes toward sexuality and morality changed over the centuries? Why and how has the state sought to criminalize certain forms of sexual behavior and to control reproduction? How have churches tried to influence the state in its regulation of sexuality?
This anthology encompasses a broad range of essays on sexuality spanning European history from the fifteenth century to the present. The topics in this collection of fifteen essays have both historic importance and current relevance. All crucial issues in the regulation of sexuality are addressed, from incest to infanticide, from breast-feeding and women's sexuality to female prostitution, from pornography to reproductive politics, and from the first homosexual rights movement to AIDS.
Contributions from a diverse group of prominent scholars representing a variety of disciplines are included in this anthology. Essays by Randolph Trumbach on "Sex, Gender, and Identity in Modern Culture: Male Sodomy and Female Prostitution in Enlightenment London"; Ruth Perry on "Colonizing the Breast: Sexuality and Maternity in Eighteenth Century England"; Theo van der Meer on "Female Same-Sex Offenders in Late Eighteenth Century Amsterdam"; Robin Ann Sheets on "Pornography, Fairy Tales, and Feminism: Angela Carter's 'The Bloody Chamber'"; and James W. Jones on "Discourses on and of AIDS in West Germany, 1986-1990."
Offering the most up-to-date scholarship from a significant and growing field, this collection is essential for both students and faculty in social history, family history, women's and gender studies, gay studies, sociology and literature.

Book Description
On New Year's Eve 1961, the first broadcast of the Irish television service was made. The initial broadcast featured addresses by the President of the Republic, Eamon de Valera, and the Primate of all Ireland, Cardinal D'Alton. Both expressed concern over the effect television might have on Irish society. The dire warnings issued by both men illustrated the high level of apprehension held by many. This anxiety had been articulated by numerous organizations and interest groups since the debate over television began to take shape in the 1950s. A number of corporations and organizations had expressed a keen interest in building and operating television stations in Ireland. Other groups stepped forward to make the case that their particular interests should be addressed in any service that might be established. From the onset, a coherent policy eluded successive governments, with the fiscally conservative Department of Finance insisting that public television was beyond the means of an under-developed economy, while the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, already responsible for the national radio service, championed a state-run system. The arguments of these and other organizations, including the Catholic Church, Irish language groups, and professional organizations, culminated in the establishment of a Television Commission to recommend public policy. After deliberating for more than a year, the Commission issued a confused and contradictory final report. As Professor Savage shows, the television service that emerged was a synthesis of these opposing positions; an Irish solution to an Irish problem. This volume will be of considerable interest to students and scholars of Ireland as well as public policy and communications.
