Jack Ohman's fishing books are terrifically funny. I proclaim this as a very good gift for ANY fly angler...especially those gadgetly-minded. This book makes me laugh every time I decide to stop reading my school books and start reading "Get the Net!"

And/or, get "Fear of Fly Fishing", which has GOT to be Ohman's best work.

This book was very enjoyable, I liked how it had so many topics of humor. It captures the spirit of humanity these days. However, it was like the generic version of McFools Internet humor, a book my friend just got. I liked hers better.

I rely on laughter to keep myself sane and Humor on the Net is one of the funniest books I've read. Every time I open it I find something that tickles my funnybone and lifts my spirits. And there are so many jokes in this book that it never gets old!

I also love how this book is organized. If I read a funny joke and I want to share it with someone I can find it quickly and easily.

I used to try to print off E-mail jokes I would receive, but keeping all those sheets of paper around didn't work. This book is the answer!

In short, I loved the book!

This book is a riot. There are 9 authors from all over the world who write 5 pieces each. I don't think I have ever laughed so much in my entire life. It's wacky, witty, smutty, weird but most of all funny. I highly recommend this publication.

The darbuka is a goblet-shaped small hand drum that is widely played in classical and folk music, especially in North Africa and Turkey. It is commonly available in Egyptian and Turkish varieties. The instrument is also known by various other names including darabukka, darbuquah, or tombak. This method presents intermediate to advanced instruction including playing positions, techniques, and rhythm exercises. Numerous photographs and diagrams aid comprehension of the material, as does the companion CD, which demonstrates all of the exercises and examples in the book. Advanced techniques covered in this text include: the up position, the finger tick, clap stroke, 3-2-3 technique, hammer technique, the slap technique, and dampen technique. The text is presented in English, French, and German.

I'll give this to Gocmez: he's a virtuoso drummer who can keep up with any great jazz drummer you care to name. Unfortunately, his book is not worthwhile. (1) His technique is really focused on finger-snaps and finger rolls that are difficult to perform on an Egyptian-style darbuka/doumbek. You need the bearing edge of the head right at the rim of the drum. This was not my understanding from the excerpts. (2) His photos do not adequately illustrate technique, and his text is very sparse -- too sparse. (3) His notation is never adequately explained. His rudiments use round & diamond shaped notes, and he never explains the meaning of a diamond shaped note. (4) He does nothing to teach you how to use his techniques in MUSIC. The closest he comes is to toss in some extravagant drum solos. I'm sorry, but I want to know when to incorporate a finger roll or snaps while playing a Cocek or a Turkish 9 -- not just fancy stuff for solos. Knowing lots of advanced techniques doesn't help much unless you can use them expressively while playing MUSIC with other MUSICIANS.

For those who truly want to know the facts about the ways of the old Hawaiians this book (and its companion, volume 2) is a must-read. Based on years of interviews with Native Hawaiian historian Mary Kawena Pukui, with pithy comments added by psychiatrist E. M. Haertig, this book gives the beginning of a foundation for understanding Hawaiian healing, lomilomi massage, kahuna, sacred ritual, sexual practices, and much more. Written in a conversational style, it is comprehensive in its scope. It includes not only voluminous material about the old ways, but also how those ways manifest today among Native Hawaiians. Anyone seeking the "secrets and mysteries" of the Hawaiians should start here.

This is a fascinating book. In Hawaiian many words have multiple meanings, and understanding their meaning is only possible if you study the culture, and vice versa. This book illustrates meaning and culture by giving examples, interviews, stories, cross-references, as well as definitions. This is no dry dictionary or analytical scholarly work. It's very readable, evocative, and draws you into the magical and sometimes alien world of old Hawaii.

There are actually two volumes, at least in the 1972 edition that I have. Volume 1 is a discussion of cultural concepts. Volume two "traces social customs, practices and beliefs from birth to old age".

If you are looking for a book that illustrates the lives ancient Hawaiians from the Hawaiian perspective (and not from the Hollywood perspective) then this book is for you. It is an excellent resource for scholar and layman alike.

Written in a format similar to an encyclopedia to allow easy lookup, the authors paints though spiritual, emotional and practical examples of ancient Hawaiian life. We follow a Hawaiian 'Ohana from conception to birth of the child to the child learning and growing up in society; relationships (sexual or otherwise) between man and woman; healing and spirituality; dreams and symbols; the many faces of aggressions; shame and guilt; ESP and prophecies; and lastly, the Hawaiian Self Image.

I ordered this book because my kumu hula (hula teacher) recommended it to suppliment my hula kahiko (ancient) instruction and understand what I am dancing to. A hula dancer, scholar or one that has the aloha spirit will find value in this book.

Hawaiians believe in the power of words, especially the spoken word. I encourage you to understand the power behind these written words. Nana I Ke Kumu (Look to the source)!!

Dr. John L. Johnson was born in Altheimer, Arkansas. He was reared in Tucson Arizona and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Saint Louis University, in Missouri, and a Doctor of Divinity from "New World Theological Seminary" in Texarkana, Arkansas.

The author has traveled throughout Europe, and a portion of Asia and Africa. he has appeared on radio and television engagements throughout the country, and has received numerous awards for his outstanding writings.

One of his most cherished awards is the key to the city of El Paso Texas, presented to him by Major Larry Francis. Dr. John L. Johnson was also selected by Marquis Who's Who in the Midwest, a biographical guide that is found in most local and public libraries.

He has contributed twenty-five years in researching biblical information, along with other important subjects relating to the significance of black-dark colors, and the African orgin in the Bible. Dr. Johnson is also a contributor to the Original African Heritage Study Bible.

Presenting the original language of the first humans , the locale and identity of these humans has long been shelved . This book should be in the educational systems of every educational institution in this country as well as international educational systems.

This review is entitled "Confirmation" because it serves to confirm or ratify what, intuitively, I have felt for as long as I can recall. Having been raised in a strongly religious family, I have been exposed to various versions of the Holy Bible, all of which tended to depict and illustrate all personalities with white faces. Given that all of the accounts in the Bible took place on the continent of Africa, prior to the arrival of any significant numbers of Europeans, it was very difficult for me to accept that none of the major figures in the Bible was Black, yet that is what is portrayed. Although I felt that something was "wrong with this picture", I had no way to refute it, and in fact, was reluctant to voice it among some of my own friends and elders who would have deemed such thoughts as sacrilegious, or worse. It still bothered me, nonetheless. As my educational experiences progressed, I had increasing difficulty reconciling what was thrust upon me by the media, those omnipresent Bible illustrations, TV Evangelists, and others who perpetuated the same notion that all of the personalities in the Bible were white. I began to research on my own, and with the advent of the Internet, other avenues were opened to me. I have read a number of other treatises and writings by other distinguished Black religious scholars on the issue of the Black presence in the Bible, all of which enlightened me, and at the same time gave me a deep sense of "connection" with those Biblical personalities, as well as a sense of pride. On the other hand, it also aroused in me a sense of anger and frustration, as it confirmed to me that religious history, just as history in general, has been manipulated, twisted, distorted, and violated for the very sinister and express purpose of discrediting a People and robbing them of a very rich heritage and perpetuating a myth of so-called "superiority". This book should be mandatory reading, not just for Blacks, but for whites, as well, who have themselves been, in the words of Carter G. Woodson, "miseducated". I applaud Dr. Johnson and his colleagues, who are making an invaluable contribution to the telling of OUR history, as too often the euphamism that history is simply "his story" as it pertains to Blacks, is validated over and over. My record will reflect that I have ordered multiple copies of this book in the past, and am at this writing ordering several more copies. They make great gifts, and I can't imagine a better gift than the gift of truth.
