Book Description

In this captivating chronicle of the Native American story, Rosebud Lakota Sioux Richard Twiss sifts through myth and legend to reveal God's strategy for the world's First Peoples. With wit, wisdom and passion, Twiss shows God's desire to use the cultures of First Nations peoples-in all their mystery, color and beauty-to break through to those involved in new age mysticism, eastern religions-even Islam.

Once Church, Many Tribes is a rallying cry for the Church to work as one so that the lost may walk in life and beauty, along the path of the Waymaker.

5 out of 5 stars God Bless Richard Twiss.......2007-05-22

As a devout Christian who is very much into the Culture of the American Indian, I find it a breath of fresh air to find and listen to the likes of Richard Twiss. I'm already in chapter 5 of this wonderful book and it has helped me with my faith in Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His Word the Holy Bible. As much as I read about the American Indian, you hardly hear about those who not only christians but Ministers such as Pastor Twiss. If I ever get stationed out in South Dakota, I hope to visit him and work with him and many of brothers and sisters. I maybe Black, but we are all children of God. The Bible gives no mention to a man or woman's skin color. May God bless Pastor Twiss and his family. Thank you for this wonderful book. To all the naysayers(not just the atheists, but those in the church as well), if you don't like this book or appreciate what Pastor Twiss is trying to do, then you don't have to read it and if you haven't read it, then please don't be coming on here and give ignorant biased opinions. I'm asking you nicely.

5 out of 5 stars The Jesus Way- not the colonist's way.......2007-03-08

This is a well written book penned by a man on fire for Christ. Many of the topics covered- or should I say uncovered and brought into the light of day- are common sense Christian ethics and theology. Haircuts, clothing styles, and a particular kind of worship music do not make a person a Christian. Richard Twiss makes apparent the fact that people of all nations can honor Jesus through music, dances, and some of their cultural traditions. He goes into depth to explain he is not advocating syncretism. He is advocating reconciliation through Christ and the elimination of walls between Christian Indigenous people and non-native evangelical churches. The anglos of the old days said no to dancing in order to honor God. I say dance like king David and let the spark of the Holy Spirit within you blaze like a bonfire.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Tom Dooley - Path Clearer (ministries).......2006-12-12

Richard Twiss has done a delightful service to the Body of Christ through "One Church, Many Tribes". This is a solid overview resource on the topic of the Church using contextual-cultural expressions of worship of the Creator / Way-maker. Richard draws from his vast experiences worldwide as a leader of First Nations-based Judeo-Christian song and dance performances and ministry. He is a man of integrity and credibility. Richard provides light-hearted comedic comments, yet while underscoring the North European "imperialistic" oppression, persistent treaty-breaking, and other related negative issues of the "Manifest Destiny" imposed on the North American tribes. A fantastic book! An eye-opener to Christians, who have limited perspectives on what can be included as "valid" expressions of worship. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars A disgrace.......2006-11-01

Quoted from the free excerpt of this book:

In the providence of almighty God, I believe it was His plan that the White man from across the great water would deliver the sacred message of Jesus to the First Nations of this continent.

Let me first state that I didn't read this book except for some of the free excerpt. The topic is a disgrace to all peoples ever conquered by those forever soul-saving Christians. First they conquer, then the conquered take on their religion. Then the conquered try to rationalize their acceptance of this new religion into their old beliefs. Listen up, nothing was wrong with your old beliefs. All cultures create their own religion to suit their own needs. It is very sad to see how Christianity is infecting so many.

5 out of 5 stars My heart aches.......2005-09-29

Wow. This is a book that every American and Canadian needs to read. Not only does it talk about the mistakes that the church has made in the last 500+ years against the Native American people, but it also speaks of our nations' horrendous treatment of our brothers and sisters. It is appauling to think of what we have done.
I can't wait to see how the church, especially among the First Nations people, is going to rise up when we finally realize that we need reconciliation and repentence, and do it.

    Book Description

Meaningful relationships, genuine connections, and real love: if those are the things this generation of teens-- the Millennial Generation--is crying out for, who can deliver? You can, says Dawson McAllister. Yes, you the parent, you the youth worker, you the teacher--anyone who wants to show teens the real love of Jesus Christ. But if you want to give Millennials what they're looking for, you've got to be willing to meet them on their own turf. And that's not always easy because the Millennial Generation is one of the most skeptical generations in history. You don't have to let them down. Saving the Millennial Generation will help you understand Millennials--what makes them tick and what ticks them off when it comes to school, church, and home. You'll have to earn their trust, but it'll be well worth the effort. Because in the end, you'll build relationships that will bring fruit both today and into all eternity-- for you and for the Millennials.

It is unbelievable the insight that Dawson has into the mind of the American Teenager! I've been applying some of his ideas about relating experience instead of teaching facts to my Senior High Class a church and it is really working!

i WAS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS ARRIVING IN THE POST, BUT DISAPPOINTMENT DOES NOT EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE MY FEELINGS WHEN IT CAME. THE BOOK ITSELF IS FLIMSY, PRINTED ON CHEAP, NASTY PAPER AND BARELY WORTH 50P. ALTMEN WRITES WITH A DISTURBINGLY GIDDY, CHILDISH APPROACH, CONSIDERING SHE GIVES YOU THE IMPRESSION SHE IS A GROWN, MARRIED WOMAN. PLUS SHE HAS NO IDEA WHAT SHE IS TALKING ABOUT. STATEMENTS SUCH AS 'YOU NEVER SEE TOMBOY JOEY IN A SKIRT OR DRESS' ARE BOUND TO IRRITATE FANS WHO WATCH EVERY WEEK,AND HAVE SEEN JOEY PROGRESS FROM A TOMBOY TO HAVING A WARDROBE WHICH A MODEL WOULD BE ENVIOUS OF. UNFORTUNEATELY, STATEMENTS SUCH AS THIS ARE FREQUENT AND ANNOYING, THIS WOMAN DOES NOT HAVE A CLUE. DON'T BE TEMPTED BY THE DECEPTIVELY CHEAP PRICE OF THIS, BUY A PROPER GUIDE. THIS IS A WASTE OF TIME, EFFORT AND MONEY.

1 out of 5 stars This Book Could Have Been Written By An Illiterate Child.......1999-01-03

I am pretty new to DC, but I still know a lot about it. I thought this book might have good info, but I was terribly mistaken and it was a waste of my $4.50. Sheryl Altman writes like a giddy teenybopper and obviously has no clue what the hell shes talking about. This book could've might as well been a 6th grade writing assignment. If you want to read a guide to a television show, you want someone who knows what they're talking about. I mean, the author spends a whole chapter discussing Dawson's interest for Steven Spielberg! Ms. Altman, i have five words for you: DON'T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB.

3 out of 5 stars Not too much information.......1998-09-07

It was short compared to the other Dawson's Creek books and had the same information. The only original thing in this book was the episode analysis with grades for romance.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for research on the television show........1998-06-23

The book is pretty good, it's more for elementry school, Jr. High School level though. It has lots of great information on the cast, a episode guide, pictures of the cast from the show and previous things they've done. All in all it's actually pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars When music began to be recorded, everything changed.......1998-07-08

This is a book about what audio recording has done to our minds, our culture, our economy, and most of all to our relationship with music. Along the way, Chanan gives an excellent short history of "phonography --" the art of recording sound, from 1902 when Caruso's voice was found to perfectly suited to drowning out surface noise, up to the '90s, when Chuck D of Public Enemy explains that the sound of New York City rap is "more of a headphone thing" because people in the Big Apple don't drive much. Songs from places where you need wheels, like Philadelphia or L.A. are made to be heard on car stereos instead.

The advent of the Edison cylinder, and later the 78 rpm disc, forever changed the fundamental relationship of musician, music, and listener. Prior to recordings, music was etherial, gone forever when the performance was over, and known only to those who were there. When music became a commodity, the performance was separated from a time and place. Moreover, it provided a way to "notate" musical forms (like the blues) that had been transmitted only in person.

Early on, it became apparent that there was big money to be made if one had a hit record -- Caruso personally made over $2 million between 1902 and 1921, when he died -- and corporations were quick to start what we now know as the Record Business. Chanan describes the confluence of technology, copyright law, and popular culture that has made the music scene what it is today: a massive multinational machine, that requires a steady stream of fresh, disposable product.

We are musically different creatures then our ancestors of a century ago. A hundred years ago, no one could have imagined music being used as aural furniture, as it is in an elevator, airport, or dentist's office. Not a single one of our great-great-grandparents ever had the experience of intimately *knowing* a performance as we do -- of having the first note of an overheard Motown song germinate inside your head with 20 years worth of memo! ries, and "hearing" every nuance of horn, snare, and reverb before they occur.

This isn't a book that one blows through in a hurry. I had to keep stopping to reread sentences and let them sink in, and adjust to some new perspective on a topic I thought I knew all about. My modest recording studio seems different now; somehow more powerful and more miraculous. I don't know if I'm a better phonographer for having read _Repeated Takes_, but I do know a lot more about the implications of pressing "Record."

                  Book Description

This book describes a revolutionary new approach to determining low energy routes for spacecraft and comets by exploiting regions in space where motion is very sensitive (or chaotic). It also represents an ideal introductory text to celestial mechanics, dynamical systems, and dynamical astronomy. Bringing together wide-ranging research by others with his own original work, much of it new or previously unpublished, Edward Belbruno argues that regions supporting chaotic motions, termed weak stability boundaries, can be estimated. Although controversial until quite recently, this method was in fact first applied in 1991, when Belbruno used a new route developed from this theory to get a stray Japanese satellite back on course to the moon. This application provided a major verification of his theory, representing the first application of chaos to space travel.

Since that time, the theory has been used in other space missions, and NASA is implementing new applications under Belbruno's direction. The use of invariant manifolds to find low energy orbits is another method here addressed. Recent work on estimating weak stability boundaries and related regions has also given mathematical insight into chaotic motion in the three-body problem. Belbruno further considers different capture and escape mechanisms, and resonance transitions.

Providing a rigorous theoretical framework that incorporates both recent developments such as Aubrey-Mather theory and established fundamentals like Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory, this book represents an indispensable resource for graduate students and researchers in the disciplines concerned as well as practitioners in fields such as aerospace engineering.

                  Book Description

Classical scholarship has traditionally neglected the prominence of the body in antiquity. Constructions of the Classical Body theorizes that the study of antiquity is necessarily a study of the body, and that attention to this fact can lead to a much-needed shift in the way in which classical studies are approached today. This volume aims to reestablish the relevance of the problem of the body at the perimeters of several different kinds of inquiry, and, in this way, to help open up a field of possibilities for future study.
The range covered by the essays in this volume is sweeping: from Corinthian vaseware to Athenian and Roman politics, poetry from Homer to Ovid, medical writers from the Hippocratic corpus to the diary of Aelius Aristides (second century c.e.), philosophy (Seneca, Porphyry), the Greek novel, Christian apocrypha, Ovid's medieval reception, and twentieth century film. This range is a consequence of the multidisciplinarity that any study of the body requires, and it attests to the particular richness of the body in classical antiquity and as an object for study today. The volume illustrates that body is located between traditional borders, not within them; the body dissolves traditional objects of study and joins areas usually kept apart. Retracing the fate of the body is thus a way of rendering antiquity truly strange again--it allows us to see the past afresh, with open eyes.
This volume includes essays by Carlin A. Barton, Anne Carlson, Eric Downing, Catherine Edwards, Maud W. Gleason, John Henderson, Ralph Hexter, S. C. Humphreys, Helen King, Leslie Kurke, Robert Lamberton, David S. Potter, Amy Richlin, Giulia Sissa, Maria Wyke, and Froma I. Zeitlin, along with an introduction by James I. Porter.
". . . a superb collection, one that I know will be most welcome not only in the field of classical studies, but in the libraries of all those interested in the history and historicity of the body." --Page duBois, University of California, San Diego
James I. Porter is Associate Professor of Classical Studies and Comparative Literature, University of Michigan.

In a world where it is difficult to talk about the human body as a social construct, it should be of no surprise that the attempt to have such a discussion about Greek and Roman bodies would be accessible to only the most serious scholars in the field. One of "The Body, in Theory" titles from the University of Michigan Press, this collection is over-whelmingly about theory. Theory is, of course, quite important in scholarship but it need not interfere with solidly written and well-evidenced arguments. Unfortunately in this case theory often over-rides good writing. The subjects are primarily literature and the studies for the most part are focused on one author or one event at a time though the reader must be familiar with the subject in order to use or analyze the essay. The one exception is Maria Wyke's essay "Herculean Muscle!" which looks at the classic tradition revamped by modern body builders and modern media.

                    Book Description

What kinds of work will be available in the 1980s? For whom? When should a person retire? Should a retiree find a part-time job? The authors answer such questions by examining a multitude of factors that will affect work decisions in the coming decade. Their findings will alert decision-makers in both private organizations and the government to the employment issues that dominate the 1980s.
