What makes this book from the usual gang of idiots at "MAD" magazine different is that it is not a reprint of choice material. It is, instead, a revised edition of the 1984 version of "MAD's How to Be a Successful Dog," which may or may not have been a reprint of choice material from "MAD" magazine. I assume so because this is the first "original" volume "MAD" that I have come across.

"MAD: How to Be a Successful Dog" is aimed at the "misinformed canine" in need of guidance as well as any dog owners who stumble upon this look at their relationship from the other side. The book is written by Spot, but told to Larry Siegel, the Emmy Award winning writer whose previous claim to fame had been replacing Hugh Hefner as the editor of "Shaft," the University of Illinois humor magazine. So Siegel has been waiting a long time to have a successful comeback. The book is illustrated by John Caldwell, a regular contributor to "MAD" Magazine, who won be over with the drawing on the table of contents of a dog wearing a t-shirt that says: "MY DAD PEED ON A GIANT CALIFORNIA REDWOOD AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT."

The book provides a comprehensive look at a dog's life, dealing not only with critical topics like "The Importance of Cute" and "Choosing the Right Master," but dealing in a forthright manner with the dark side of being a dog, such as "The Fine Art of Living with Guilt" and "Facing Up to Punishment." The book is filled with practical advice in terms of what to lick and when, three reasons why not to waste time chasing cats, and when to bark while traveling in a car. Spot ends with a chapter entitled "Everything You Have to Know About Sex--So Why Ask" that talks not only about the importance of engaging in meaningless small-bark but the problems of trying to light a couple of cigarettes with your paws when it is all over. At that point there is nothing left to talk about and Spot leaves his readers to return to the dog-eat-dog world from whence they came.

WARNING: This book is not intended for younger readers, even if they are being weaned on "MAD" Magazine's brand of satire. Spot know what the term is for female dogs and he is not afraid to use it. Of course, if your kids gets to the end of the book and is reading about doggie sex, one little five-letter word is hardly going to do much additional damage.

Intellectual & Stupid at the same time: Cracks me up!!!.......2001-07-06

This is another of the greatest MAD books of all time! It's funny, and the idea of the book is unique! Tha book is riotous! Larry Siegel has pulled it off, with great illustrating by John Caldwell! Tha two are a perfect match for this great book that just keeps me laughing to this day!

No dog with this one!.......1999-11-08

MAD produced over 200 paperbacks and this one was one of the best. Larry Siegel hits the mark about dog ownership. Angelo Torres did the art for the original release for Warner books. John Caldwell steps in for this release and does a great job.

I thought this book was great!!! Very humorously written, whether your a dog or cat lover you will find much here to tickle your funny bone.

Get the book but not the study guide........2006-06-26

Let me just start by saying that the book Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets by John Murphy is an excellent book; truely a classic which I highly reccomend. However, I found the study guide to be a waste of my time. It is filled with a bunch of quizes which are vaguely worded and won't do you much if any good. I guess they can help you to see how well you comprehended the chapters, but it has no supplemental information or sumaries on important material. It's just a bunch of multiple choice and matching. There was no further understanding of the material in my experience. Save your money, just buy the textbook, not the studyguide.

This is a stupid and non-critical book about a non-sense theory. Since the theory is able to predict everything it is completely meaningless!

For example: When the price approaches a support- or resistance- line, it will either bounce back, or, -believe it or not- break through the line. The theory does not even tell which event is most likely!

Waste of time.......2003-11-22

John Murphy is a market technician with well deserved notoriety. The textbook, Technical Analysis of Financial Markets is excellent, the workbook is garbage. Poor questions, unclear statements and vaguely annotated charts muddle the text. The textbook covers 19 plus chapters, the workbook only goes to chapter 12. Disappointing.

This book is helpful for the readers who read John Murphy's classic. But I feel the questions may be too simple. If you read the text then you can answer most of them. They are not very challanging.

An invaluable self-study manual in Technical Analysis.......2000-08-12

This self-study manual with "Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets" is the best way to starting studying the technical analysis. This is, without doubt, the Bible!

It's easy-to-follow, step-by-step method leads you through each of the book's chapters and provides objectives that give your reading focus.

Deep but not stuffy exploration of Christian spirituality.......1999-09-09

This book surprised me because the author took some common life experiences and held them up to a refraction beam in order to help the reader understand better the spiritual journey. Standish's book is not simplistic, but it is well written and intended for people who are on the spiritual quest. His understanding of God and God's working in our lives--as well as our remaining available to God--feels on target.

His writing is not stuffy. Standish is not overly pious. He does not expect the reader to have experienced spirituality exactly as he has. He offers personal examples that connect with my experience, but his writing does not force me to conform to his experience.

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PAST!.......2003-03-23

This is based on my upcoming review in First Draft Magazine:

KEEPING HEARTH AND HOME IN OLD ALABAMA by Carol Padgett.

At first glance, this seems to be one of those pre-packaged
books of old-time advice and recipes that could be reproduced for
each state in the Union--just change the name "Alabama" to
whatever state you want to insert.

However, though this is a wise marketing strategy, this book
is somewhat personalized for Alabama, making it worthwhile for
the historical footnotes it contains, as well as for its
entertaining recipes and bits of wisdom.

Where else would you be reminded that, because of the power
of "White Privilege," many old Southern recipes developed by
black slaves and domestics were credited to the white families
who passed them down the generations? This is something to
ponder.

Where else would you find advice from Harriet Beecher Stowe
on how to boil water properly? Where else would you learn that
asbestos is best in protecting your stove from setting the house
on fire? And you'll be grateful to learn that a dining table
"should be firm and solid and not so shaky that the guests fear
some catastrophe." So much for the advice I got from my wife:
always carry a matchbook to dinner, in case the table wobbles and
you have to level it.

In other words, this is a browser's book, a book for the
waiting room or the bath room. You can pick it up and learn
something totally useless almost anywhere in the book--and once
in a while you'll be startled with a useful piece of information:
"Many children form habits which are not nice, such as spitting
on the floor...and yawning." We have to be thankful for small
improvements over the past century.

Wonderful Historical Series for Women.......2002-08-18

If you are curious on how your great grandmother, or great-great grandmother lived, this is a must read. Full of interesting recipes, household hints, protocol and family rearing tips of the 1900's. This book is one of a series (several different states have been written about) The book is written in an easy to read format, and would be enjoyable for anyone over 12 years old. This book has some humor and is written for the layman, and not the college student. This book may also be of value for someone writing historical fiction novels. If you are a romantic, and love reading books and watching movies set in the 1900's, this book is for you! Great Value! I am looking forward to reading more in the series. I give it 5 Stars!

Harmonizing Europe analyzes factors that both drive and impede the establishment of transnational markets, such as the European Union--EU, NAFTA or MERCOSUR. The author argues that the fit between domestic institutions (namely, the legal and administrative legacies of nation states, and the organization of interest groups) and the rules and regulations of transnational markets determines the degree to which transnational markets find their way into member states and become reality. By turning to the European Union and two of its directives (equal pay and air pollution), Duina explores the driving forces behind the implementation of such directives, the ability of institutional theory to explain political and social events, and the determining factors in the fate of environmental and gender policies in transnational markets.

In "Harmonizing Europe," Duina and his unique perspective facilitate his ability to do a splendid job of concentrating on the intricacies involved with the merger of Europe into one, more uniform, entity. His detailed analysis of the effects of equal pay and environmental issues on the EU is enlightening. As we move into an era of more political, economic, and social mergers between nations along the lines of NAFTA, ASEAN, CARICOM, etc, this book serves as a model for understanding these phenomenons.

European Union is seen through painfully detailed examen.......1999-08-02

It is not easy to understand a totally new experiment like the one putting together many States with so different racial and cultural background. There are no previous examples to use as reference. Duina decided to take a very detailed picture of a moment in the EU evolution. If we had more pictures like this, that would allow the assembly of a movie, the closest thing man has devised to link together actual information and time. The book is very clearly designed and assembled, an excellent example of normative science implementation.
