Customer Reviews:
Is there a reason for this book?.......2007-08-07
In the past, Leonard Maltin has provided us with helpful movie guides that have served their purpose for many years. They are revised every year and provide invaluable information concerning availability on VCR and DVD along with thumbnail sketches of the plots. His reviews are aimed at Joe Q Average and dwell on the well-known Oscar-oriented qualities such as acting performances which bring attention to themselves, heavy-handed films with The Message, verisimilitude as a be-all and end-all and film only as cerebral as the public will be able to understand with little or no effort. His Classic Movie Guide is precisely more of the same, more so. The film choices are overwhelmingly American a la American Film Institute and largely oriented to hit the largest segment of the viewers most often, a public where so many still think that their favorite stars not only act in but direct, script, score, edit, shoot and generally make up their films as they go along. With this in mind, Maltin's book will hit his target. For those of us who take the movies seriously, there are better sources almost anywhere else.

classic films.......2007-02-21
It's too bad you now have to buy two books to get all of Maltin's reviews, but it is nice to have this volume as Maltin has an appreciation of older films that is often lacking in today's reviewers.
indispensible.......2007-01-04
a superb reference book, an absolute must for any film fan & a historical record of past films, easy to read, easy to digest.
Only quibble, I am not a fan of Gene Autry & could have used smaller descriptions of his & the other B westerns.
Of the major films I probably saw 80 % of them, been going to the movies since I was 6 or 7 yrs old & was able to remember the theatres I saw some at.
Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide.......2006-08-23
I like old movies like are shown on Turner Classic Movies and this has the reviews for them. This book is of the same high calibre as Maltin's annual movie review guide. I would say it is indispesible for any old movie buff. Bravo!
A Good Companion that shouldn't stand alone.......2006-03-01
A good book for lovers of old movies who hate browsing through the 1600 pages of Maltin's regular guide only to find the film their looking for between a BOMB by Adam Sandler and a Yugoslavian-Japanese Documentary nobody has ever heard of. The Classic Movie Guide was not made to be a list of 4-star, really great old movies. It was made as a companion guide to the regular book as a place to put older, minor films to make room for newer movies in the regular guide. People who feel cheated because their 2006 guide still contains Gone With the Wind should probably know that it will always be in both guides, but films such as Law and Order(1953) or O. Henry's Full House(1952) may one day only be found in the classic guide. They should also note that their 2006 guide is about 100 pages thinner than the 2005 guide and that reviews of vintage series (e.g. Blondie, The Thin Man) are no longer listed in the regular guide and have been moved to the classic guide. In my understanding of this book, more and more minor old films will be removed from the regular guide and placed in the classic guide which will be revised every 5 years. My suggestions for this book would be to change the title to Leonard Maltin's Vintage Movie Guide and add films made before 1965 but after 1960, such as To Kill a Mockingbird and Lawrence of Arabia. I also would suggest making a third guide in about five or six years just for foreign films, excluding British films of course.

Book Description
In this candid biography/photo book of the rock group that has sold over two million copies of its debut album Hot Fuss, noted journalist Jarret Keene reveals the secret meanings of songs by The Killers ("The Ballad of Michael Valentine," "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine"). Also exposed is how the band dodged slings and arrows (a Las Vegas newspaper once dismissed The Killers as a "Duran Duran cover band") to become the latest breakthrough rock band-and perhaps the next great rock band of the twenty-first century. Nearly 100 never-before-published photos of The Killers (crowned Best New Band on the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards) are included, from their original lineup to their most recent stadium gigs. The author shares his unique insight into the band's psychology-the hidden power struggles, the friendships cemented and broken-and sheds light on what makes The Killers stand out in the world of rock music today.
In addition to having been close friends and bandmates with members of the now multi-platinum-selling The Killers, author
Jarret Keene covered the rapid rise of the group during his three-year stint as arts and entertainment editor for Las Vegas CityLife. From The Killers' humble beginnings as the house band for a local transsexual dive bar to their eventual friendship with Jay Z, Keene saw and heard it all. Keene is also the author of the poetry collection Monster Fashion and the alternative travel guide The Underground Guide to Las Vegas. He lives in Las Vegas.

destiny is sweet!.......2006-07-07
This book offers a look at the killers past that hasn't been told before with great photos that help tell the story of this band's drive and talent.
without focusing on just one member it gives an interesting look at each members role, how they came together and how hard they worked to be the successful band they are today.
normally skeptical about unofficial biography's.. especially on band's that I love.. this book is different I think it is an honest, accurate portrayal of the band and one all killers fans will love!
They made it out.......2006-07-01
If you've ever lived in Las Vegas, you know why the Killers' story is worth reading: They made it out, and in a very big way.
If you haven't lived in Vegas, and don't know how many bands have tried and failed to do what the Killers did, this book will fill you in.
Jarret Keene was the perfect journalist to detail the Killers' rise to fame, as he was there from the start. Not many other rock star biographies have that luxury.
It doesn't get much better than "The Killers: Destiny is Calling Me." The writing's great. The pictures are amazing. The band is unforgettable. Read itv and let the process of forgetting Slaughter begin.
The making of The Killers.......2006-06-02
Sometimes bands seem to come out of nowhere and suddenly they're everywhere... This book is awesome in that it shows just how hard the Killers worked to go from playing for 10 people in a cafe and tiny clubs (the book has the photos to prove it!) to being the huge stars they are today -- really inspiring if you're in a band that's just starting out or trying to get signed...
A must-have for all Killers fans -- lots of great photos and the mystery of Ted, the fifth Killer, is revealed. Very cool!

Customer Reviews:
Newlywed basics.......2007-04-12
This book was not very informative. The sections contained a lot of what I thought was common sense topics that didn't need to be laid out in detail in a book. I have found that there are to many other better books out there for newlyweds.
Easy to read! Practical advice........2006-02-28
This book was great for giving practical advice on how to manage your finances while you are also in the process of combining (or not combining) finances with your future spouse.
Great lists.......2005-12-23
Although my husband and I are both well versed in basic finances and have been married more than a year and a half, we still found valuable information in this book. In particular, the second half includes many lists, such as
-what should be kept in a safe deposit box
-what papers do you need to keep for taxes/other reasons, and for how long
While there are many books written at this level about basic finances, this book is special because it is directed specifically at two people who are making (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime decisions about whether to add each others names to credit cards, whether they can afford to buy a first home, etc. I would highly recommend this book as a refresher, even if you feel you already know about money.
The Only Financial Guide New Couples Will Ever Need.......2005-10-20
This book covers all the important money issues that couples have to resolve, whether they like it or not, if they want to build a sound and trusting financial future together-and it does so in the most down to earth, non-threatening and engaging way. The author's humor, generosity and honesty in sharing some of the ways she and her husband have managed and mismanaged their own finances over the course of their marriage really sets this book apart from other dry and mechanical books on finance. Many of the issues the author guides readers through are not easy ones to confront, but again, her humor, honesty and sweet humanity are the teaspoon of sugar that helps the medicine go down in the most delightful way. I can't recommend this book highly enough!
A must for the newly engaged woman!.......2005-09-10
This is a great book!!
I bought it even before I got engaged because my boyfriend (now fiance) and I couldn't decide how to conduct our finances once we eventually got married.
Not only does this book give suggestions on different ways to combine assets and pay bills, but it talks about how to realistically plan your wedding budget, what you need to do legally after you get married (like where to go to change your name and in what order), how to save for a house down-payment, retirement, insurance, taxes, and estate planning. It is very readable and has great examples of do's and don'ts.
I highly recommend this book to any woman or couple who would like to know what the difference is between a 401k, IRA, Roth IRA, and a pension. For those who want to know what to do if she is a saver and he is a spender (or vice versa).
I really enjoyed it and you will too!
Book Description
For Richer, For Poorer provides a new perspective on the impact of divorce on women. Public debates focus on divorce as a sign of "family decline" and a loss of "family values." While divorce brings hardships for most mothers and their children, many are happy to be free of difficult marriages, particularly the large number of women who experienced domestic violence. Based on interviews with a random sample of divorced mothers, this book identifies their real concerns: inadequate resources from their ex-husbands and the state, and unequal social policies.
In
For Richer, For Poorer, divorced mothers of different classes and races present their accounts of how they manage the divorce process. They describe leaving their marriages, managing their families on reduced incomes, negotiating with their ex-husbands for resources and custody and visitation agreements, and rebuilding their own lives and those of their families. Many women experience serious conflicts with their ex-husbands over resources, custody and visitation during this process, and some are fearful. Studying divorce from the point of view of mothers provides critical information about what women gain and lose through divorce, and what frustrates their attempts to support themselves and their children and to live independently. Women's accounts of their divorces also contribute to our knowledge of how the family is and is not working for women, how inequality hinders women, and how that inequality is mediated by factors of gender, class, and race. Demie Kurz argues that current debates about "family values" do not address the real problem. We must dramatically reverse our policies which penalize the single-parent family and instead provide mothers and children with adequate resources.
Book Description
On the heels of the bestseller success of her novel The Wedding, Dorothy West, the last surviving member of the Harlem Renaissance, presents a collection of essays and stories that explore both the realism of everyday life, and the fantastical, extraordinary circumstances of one woman's life in a mythic time. Traversing the universal themes and conflicts between poverty and prosperity, men and women, and young and old, and compiling writing that spans almost seventy years, The Richer, The Poorer not only affords an unparalleled window into the African-American middle class, but also delves into the richness of experience of "one of the finest writers produced in this country during the Roaring Twenties"(Book Page).
Customer Reviews:
It only looks easy.......2001-05-24
Would-be writers would do well to read this collection of seemingly simple stories and sketches. It takes great talent and understanding to write such effortless, fluid prose. Once you've read the short stories, the reminiscences are a fascinating reflection of how an author mines her own life experiences to create art. As well, this pioneer of black literature has painted historical mini-portraits of life for so many people -- some of whom were born to slavery and freed within the author's own lifetime. It's too easy to forget that not so very long ago, black people weren't even considered citizens, but merely property. This is a lovely book, a prime example of elegantly simple writing. Highly recommended.
Interesting Read.......2000-07-07
This collection of short stories were interesting to read. Some were intriguing, others were okay, and some were suspenful.I enjoyed her writing about middle and upper middle class African Americans that are often neglected in popular literature. Some pieces were autobiographical but they span from the 1920s -1980s.Provides the reader with an intereting insight to an African AmericanNew Englander's perspectives but ultimately illustates that we are all part of the human community. This is good reading for a rainy day, a snowy day, or any day!
A Modest Effort.......1999-06-11
I have mixed feelings about Ms. West's novels. On the one hand, she writes remarkable well about the human condition and even her shortest stories translate into volumes in the mind. On the other hand Ms. West's constant references to skin color and class are contrived and nauseating. It make on e think that maybe she hated her own warm brown skin. These stories are interesting. Some are underdeveloped mostly because she was so very young when she penned them. It's a worthwhile book but it didn't make me a fan.

Book Description
Inequality increased in Canada throughout the 1990s. Despite government programs designed to confront the problem, more people than ever lived below the poverty line, with the young, women and visible minorities at greatest risk.
Richer and Poorer describes the problem of inequality and explains why it is so hard to eradicate. The authors discuss why public policy and programs have not succeeded in ending gender, racial or other types of inequality, and why, without action, inequality in Canada will only increase
Richer and Poorer is an acute and detailed analysis of the disparities of wealth and poverty as experienced in 1990s Canada.
