Book Description
If Chins Could Kill is a delightfully irreverent, yet oddly touching epic of ambition and disappointment, fame and anonymity, and lots of fake blood. Told in Bruces wry, sarcastic voice, it is a Hollywood from the bleacher seats look at his experiences in film and TV and at his status as a cult horror and sci-fi movie god. This man with the face of a matinee idol and the heart of a Stooge first attracted what has grown into an enormous cult following as the star of Sam Raimis legendary Evil Dead trilogy of thriller-comedies. With tireless good humor and biting wit, Bruce acted, produced, and directed his way through a bakers dozen of B horror films and space operas before finally enjoying mainstream stardom on prime-time TV. Deeply earnest and fiercely funny, this book tells the story of an unlikely star who continues to lead a unique double life as cult movie icon and regular Joe.

Just Plain Fun.......2007-09-16
Who doesn't love Bruce Campbell? You've seen him in the Evil Dead movies, in Hercules and Xena, in Jack of All Trades, in Spider-Man, in The Hudsucker Proxy, in Brisco Country Jr, in Bubba Hotep and, most recently, in USA's Burn Notice. No matter what he's in, you know it's going to be a good-old fashioned, fun, rip-roaring good time with a healthy dash of humor and slapstick. And for Campbell's fans, this book doesn't disappoint either.
If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor is a fun autobiography - Campbell tells his story in simple, matter-of-fact terms without pulling any punches or overly philosophizing. He gives us what we want - humorous anecdoes and career highlights, as well as great behind-the-scenes tales. Granted, most of this book focuses on his early career and the making of/hoopla over Evil Dead and Evil Dead II. However, you'll also get insight into a number of other elements of his career, including the roles that got away (for instance - did you know he lost out to Billy Zane for the role of The Phantom?). This is also a quick read - I got through it in less than 24 hours. If you're looking for a fun read about one of our favorite actors, you can't go wrong with this one. Check it out!
No Joke.......2007-08-23
This was an excellent read!
Such a pleasant change from many auto biographies.
He is not afraid to be totally honest and take many stabs at his credibility.
Many laughs to be had
If Chins Could Kill:.......2007-08-10
An entertaining look into gorilla film making and the ins and outs of a working actor.
Not just for Bruce Campbell fans...........2007-06-27
"If Chins Could Kill" provides wonderful insight to how Hollywood and the movie industry really works. Far too often the glamour of film (part of the mystique, schmaltz, whatever) leaves us assuming everyone in Hollywood is running around in limousines, dining with Julia Roberts, and wondering where to put their millions. Obscure wage slave members of unions who have to fight the machine and at the same time be obsequious price takers, begging for any chance, are more the reality, and Bruce Campbell does a wonderful job of making the film industry come alive from the perspective of a clever Joe-Sixpack. A wry inside observer you'd welcome as your friend.
Thoroughly enjoyable on many dimensions.
HAIL TO THE KING, BABY.......2007-04-25
BRUCE CAMPBELL
IF CHINS COULD KILL:CONFESSIONS OF A B MOVIE ACTOR
HAIL THE KING BABY, Bruce Campbell has all ways been one of my favorite actors ever since I first had seen "EVIL DEAD". I have followed his career since then and have never been disappointed by any one of his performances ever. So you can only imagine how excited I was when I first heard about this book being published, in fact I rarely ever get excited about a book [Stephen King, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Eric Bischoff, & a few others are the exceptions]. After first purchasing this book I started to wonder something, how long will it take before I get to the filming on "Evil Dead" in this book. But as soon as I started reading from the first page I forgot all about that, I found everything he had written about his childhood and growing up extremely interesting. In fact how all of them [the crew, Raimi, Spiegel, Becker, Tapert, & all the rest] got together is one of my favorite parts about the book.
Of course from there things get real interesting when they all get together to film "Evil Dead", of course the chapter before this was excellent as it is the story of how they raised the money for the film, "Within The Woods" [the sample film they made to show investors]. But on to the "Evil Dead" section of the book, this has got to be one of the greatest things I have ever read. The problems these guys went through is amazing, for a film that was so good and looked like it was a blast to make was anything but for this group. It also is to bad that somebody burnt the cabin down, but things get even more interesting as the group goes on to put "Evil Dead" in film festivals. It was cool to see how they went on to get distribution for the film that launched their careers. Also it was cool to find out That Stephen King loved the film and had some input into the second "Evil Dead" being made. Of course "Evil Dead 2" & "Army of Darkness" were some very interesting sections in this book, especially since each one of them like the original are classics.
Of course the whole book isn't about those three cult classics, in fact not all of it is about the film industry. But worry not all you TV fanatics out there, "Hercules, Xena, & Brisco County Jr." are all discussed in full detail, and if you were a fan of those shows like my self [DVD box sets are great] you will definitely be pleased with these sections. It was cool to find out about how he came into the director's chair, and learn more about his roll's on the shows. Of course he only appeared on "Hercules, and Xena" as were he starred in "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.", but the first two is were he got a lot more time behind the camera as a director. Also his various television roles are discussed in the book as well as his various film roles, although I wish he would have discussed the "Maniac Cop" series and "Serving Sara" more, although "Maniac Cop" was discussed more so then the latter. Many other topics are discussed within the pages of this book, his family, childhood, and every day things are in here as well, and the fan conventions are talked about as well. I also have the version of the book with the extra section about "The Chins Across America", worth the purchase is all I can say.
This was a great book, and I highly recommend this book to any and everybody out there.

THE book to buy for young musical theatre fans!.......2007-03-31
If your youngster is looking to audition for musicals, or if he or she just wants to sing for fun, this is a great book to buy! The songs are not too difficult, but they are still "real" musical songs. This isn't a book full of songs sang by cartoon characters! The accompaniment tracks are alright, too. I teach theatre and musical theatre to middle school students, and I've used songs out of this book a lot. I highly recommend it for the beginner.
A Good Collection for Young Singers.......2007-01-23
The book itself is a nice compilation of songs from well-known shows. However, the CD music is not as good as I'd expect for this caliber of collections. Instead of Piano accompaniment, it would have been so much better if multiple instruments were used.
Useful book!.......2007-01-04
I have used this book with many of my younger voice students and it is always a hit with them. Some of the songs are hard, but some are really easy, so it is a good book to use with beginners, and accomodates them as they progress. I highly recommend this book.
a really great songbook!.......2000-06-22
a couple monthes ago my singing teacher sold me her extra copy of this songbook and ever since then I've been doing almost nothing except for songs from this book! I've done "Castle on a Cloud" "I Won't Grow Up" etc.. I highly recomend this book!

...And shoot they do.......2002-10-04
I first heard poems from this book read aloud at a summertime pool party and it was true entertainment.
The words themselves flow musically -- as do the rhythms of the poems. They're just as fun to read aloud as they are to hear aloud.
Not for cozy, bedtime reading, The Songs Shoot Out of My Mouth should be "played."

great content - bad format.......2003-08-12
I have enjoyed learning to play many of the songs in this book. As a parent, it has allowed me to play songs my kids know. Unfortunantly the presentation is flawed. First, the book does not stay open! - making two-handed piano play difficult. Second, some of the music is hard to read. There are different reproductions - some are very are clear and some look like multiple generation photocopies.

wonderful for even the youngest children.......2007-06-09
my children are 6 and 7. they love this touching story of beethoven. we have taken many a long car ride and this cd is always our companion. it would be a good idea to also get a background book of beethoven for your children as they may become so intested, as mine did, that they simply had to know more about him. i bought the teachers notes that go with this. i would have done better to get a more thorough book, but it has served us well. this cd is highly recommended
Terrific For the Whole Family.......2007-04-24
Beethoven Lives Upstairs CD is an intriguing imaginary story told by a child who lives in the apartment below the elderly, deaf Beethoven, whom the child believes to be a mad man. The story of Beethoven's life and his greatness as a musician, even after becoming deaf, is woven through a series of letters the child writes to a relative who teaches the appreciation of Beethoven and his music. It is a beautifully written story of the great and tragic composer's life, interwoven with marvelous renditions of his most beloved music. This is one of the Symphony of Stories for all ages collection of Classical Kids CD's from Children's Group. You and your children will want to own all of them and listen to them again and again!
Beethoven Lives Upstairs.......2005-01-18
Excellent story for the entire family to enjoy. Music and information is blended together to make the audio version of this story enjoyable for a wide range of ages. Great way to introduce kids to famous composers in a format that is interesting and fun. And, the listeners don't Have to sit still while the story is being read.
one of an excellent series.......2000-11-07
I started buying this series for my 6 year old one year ago. She received "Mr Bach comes to Call" for her seventh birthday. She has spent hours listening to it and then to other Bach CDs. The music is well selected and the historical content is described quite well. Her imagination has really been excited. As we live in Germany for the moment she has expressed a wish to visit Liepzig to see Bach's grave. We have four in this series now and think they are brilliant. All of us enjoy listening especially on long car journeys. Great entertainment with educational value.

Book Description
Despite the enormous amount of work that has attempted to combine historical and anthropological approaches in recent years, few books have outlined the underlying premises that make integration of the two fields difficult. In Out of Time, Nicholas Thomas argues that a "historical perspective" cannot simply be added to conventional anthropology, which systematically takes ethnography "out of time." Drawing examples from the Polynesian anthropological literature, he points to discredited social evolutionary ideas that have persisted even after apparently dramatic theoretical shifts and to the need to take seriously sources that anthropologists have previously dismissed.
When it was first published in 1989, Out of Time generated much-needed discussion on the appropriate models for historical anthropology. Thomas considered that both the historical structuralism of Marshall Sahlins and neo-Marxist regional systems theory had failed to transcend crucial limitations of conventional anthropology. Yet they provided elements of a more stimulating and critical perspective, which would also take account of contemporary political developments in the Pacific region.
For this second edition, Thomas has added an afterword that reflects on the book's initial reception and brings its critique up to date. He suggests a need to historicize the professionalization of anthropology as a discipline to understand shifts in practice and the need to acknowledge the historical specificity and limits of all forms of cultural knowledge, whether "Western" or indigenous.
Out of Time will be a useful text for graduate courses in anthropology, history, and cultural studies.
"This book displays rare integrity: Thomas' intellectual stance toward the theoretical approaches of others is fully consistent with his own discursive practices." --Contemporary Pacific
Nicholas Thomas is Senior Research Fellow, Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, Australian National University.

Book Description
Television, Ethnicity and Cultural Change explores postmodern issues of migrancy and diasporic cultures.
Marie Gillespie's in-depth study, examining how television and video are being used to recreate cultural traditions within the "South Asian" diaspora in London, offers an invaluable survey of how cultures are shaped and changed through people's recreative reception of the media. Looking specifically at young people's preoccupation with television narratives, Gillespie discovers how they both reaffirm and challenge parental traditions, at the same time formulating their own aspirations towards cultural change.
Television, Ethnicity and Cultural Change is an important contribution to current debates in audience studies.
Book Description
The Cultural Revolution of China’s Maoist era has come and gone, yet another cultural revolution of a different sort has been sweeping through China in the 1990s. Although recently much interest has been focused on China’s economy, few Westerners are aware of the remarkable transformations occurring in the culture of ordinary people’s daily lives. In China’s New Cultural Scene Claire Huot surveys the wide spectrum of art produced by Chinese musicians, painters, writers, performers, and filmmakers today, portraying an ongoing cultural revolution that has significantly altered life in the People’s Republic.
Western observers who were impressed by the bravery of the demonstrators in Tiananmen Square—and stunned at the harshness of their suppression—will learn from this book how that political movement led to changes in cultural conditions and production. Attending to all the major elements of this vast nation’s high and low culture at the end of a landmark decade, Huot’s discussion ranges from the cinematic works of Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, and others to emerging musical forms such as rock, punk, and rap. Other topics include television, theater, and avant-garde art, the new electronic media, and subversive trends in both literature and the visual arts.
With a comprehensive index of artists and works, as well as a glossary of Chinese words, China’s New Cultural Scene will enlighten students of Chinese culture and general readers interested in contemporary Asia.

Book Description
Archie Bunker’s America discerns what was “in the air” as television networks tried to accommodate cultural and political swings in America from the Vietnam era through the late 1970s. Josh Ozersky’s spirited examination of the ways America changed television during a period of intense social upheaval, recuperation, and fragmentation uncovers a bold and beguiling facet of American cultural history. From the conflict-based comedy of All in the Family and such post-sixties frolics as Three’s Company to tendentiously apolitical programs like Happy Days, Ozersky describes the range and power of television to echo larger schemes of American life.
Around 1968, advertisers who were anxious to break into the lucrative baby-boomer demographic convinced television networks to begin to abandon prime-time programming that catered to universal audiences. With the market splintering, networks ventured into more issue-based and controversial territories. While early network attempts at more “relevant” programming failed, Ozersky examines how CBS struck gold with the political comedy All in the Family in 1971 and how other successful, conflict-based comedies turned away from typical show business conventions. As the 1970s wore on, the innovations of the previous years began to lose their public appeal. After Vietnam and Watergate, Ozersky argues, Americans were exhausted from the political turbulence of the preceding decade and were ready for a televisual “return to normalcy.”
Straightforward, engaging, and liberally illustrated, Archie Bunker’s America is peppered with the stories of outsider cops and failed variety shows, of a young Bill Murray and an old Ed Sullivan, of Mary Tyler Moore, Fonzie, and the Skipper, too. Drawing on interviews with television insiders, trade publications, and the programs themselves, Ozersky chronicles the ongoing attempts of prime-time television to program for a fragmented audience—an audience whose greatest common denominator, by 1978, may well have been the act of watching television itself. The book also includes a foreword by renowned media critic
Mark Crispin Miller and an epilogue of related commentary on the following decades.

a tour-de-force survey of the 70s.......2003-04-23
If you love the 70s, especially all the great cheesy TV shows of the time, this books is for you. It's super smart and funny, as the author, Josh Osersky, takes you on a guided tour of the times, and how shows like Three's Company and the Love Boat tell us the true story of America in the 70s. One of the best books I ever read!!!!
