Book Description

"To this book I say yes, yes, yes!"
—from the Foreword by Richard Carlson, author of Don't Sweat the Small Stuff

Find more time and energy for the things you love to do—learn to say no without feeling guilty!

The simple word "no" is often the most difficult to say. Yet anyone can develop the skills to say no with confidence, kindness, and peace of mind. And the benefits are enormous. You'll spend less time doing things you don't want to do with people you don't want to see, and move closer to your own priorities and passions.

How to Say No Without Feeling Guilty shows you:

The five simple techniques that will help you say no with finesse in nearly any situation
How to apply two basic principles to minimize guilt about saying no and reduce the likelihood of personal conflicts

In addition, authors Patti Breitman and Connie Hatch provide specific language and practical strategies for defending your boundaries against life's many intrusions and distractions, including:

Demanding friends and family members
Unwelcome invitations, dates, and romantic entanglements
Requests for money, whether from friends, relatives, organizations, or panhandlers
Unreasonable assignments at work
Pushy people who ask for too many favors
Junk mail, annoying phone calls, and buddies with something to sell
High-maintenance people
And much more

Ultimately, "no" can be one of the most positive words in your vocabulary. Whether you crave more family time, more time for yourself, or more time to pursue a dream, saying no frees up room for the "yeses" in your life.

3 out of 5 stars Exactly what it says in the title.......2006-07-09

The book literally tells you *how* to say "no" nicely. It doesn't tell you when to say no, or why to say no, it tells you *how* to say no. It doesn't try to give you a moral compass, nor does it judge you or those around you. It doesn't tell you how to best handle the alcoholic in your life; it gives you complete sentences you can use in conversations with the person to make it clear that you don't want to participate (even just by your presence) in X, Y, or Z activities.

There are sections that promote "little white lies", but there are no situations offered where that's the only suggested method of handling it. There are also "preventative" techniques in most of the sections. While those techniques are generally avoidant, I can see how they can be useful for those who are just learning to be assertive and thus can not be assertive frequently.

I don't think there's anything all that groundbreaking in the book; it's literally a book of stock phrases in list format between short sections of motivational prose designed to give you the guts to say it. It can't give you a backbone, but if your in the process of getting one implanted, it can help you change your speech patterns to reflect this (and avoid transplant rejection). It may also help you fake having a backbone with those who aren't pushy.

This book is definitely for when you've already decided that "no" is what you want to say, but you can't actually come up with the words to do so. While the book is clearly by and for middle-middle and upper-middle class women, most of the stock phrases will work for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Much useful advice about a subject we're never taught!.......2005-12-06

Heard the cassette program, HOW TO SAY NO WITHOUT FEELING
GUILTY--written and read by Patti Breitman and Connie Hatch . . . and
am so glad that I did, in that it contains much useful advice on this
useful topic that nobody ever teaches us about.

Think about it . . . we get bombarded with requests and, at the
same time, we are told to be polite, kind and considerate of
others . . . so too often, we fail to stand up for ourselves and
just take on more and more responsibilities.

Or we find ourselves burdened with having to deal with
(still another) request for money . . . even turning down
invitations to social engagements can often prove irksome.

What made HOW TO SAY NO so useful to me was the fact
that it covered all these areas, as well as such topics as
demanding friends and family members, unreasonable
assignments at work and telemarketers.

I'm not sure that will become the expert as a result of
having heard this book, but having such techniques as the
following will certainly help make my life easier:

Buy time before responding to a request; e.g., I
need to check a policy.

Say, "I have a policy" . . . e.g., about lending money.
Or: It's our policy to have dinner together every Friday night.

Say, I have plans. Don't go into too much detail when declining
an invitation.

Ask: Will your quality of life improve with another job?

When asked out, you can say, I think I have plans; thanks anyway.
(If you do have plans and they change, you can always call back
if the initial invitation is still open.)

If asked if somebody can bring children, you can say, "This
party is for grownups only."

Give a child two choices to get them a manageable freedom of choice.

When you buy something new, get rid of something old.

3 out of 5 stars Won't Give You a Backbone.......2005-08-17

If you know you need to say no, but don't know how, this is the book for you. It literally gives you the words to string together to say no without appearing mean and hateful. Also there is a chapter on handling high maintenance people in your life.

But, if you don't know you should say no, this book won't help. If you know you should say no but don't want to, again there is no help. This book won't give you a backbone.

1 out of 5 stars Yes or No Quiz.......2004-01-08

Here's a simple quiz to determine if this book is for you. Answer Yes or No to the following 2 questions, which are situations used in the book.

Question #1 - You are asked to go out on a date with someone that you find unattractive and do not wish to go out with them. You should not just tell them No, but also tell them that you are seeing someone else to show "mercy" on them? Yes or No (The book refers to this as a "face savings" technique.)

Question #2 - Your 6 year old child likes chocolate covered cereal, but you want them to eat something more nutritious. When at the grocery store with your child you should avoid the cereal isle and come back to get cereal another time, thus avoiding the need to say no? Yes or No (The book refers to this as a "prevention" technique.)

If you answered Yes to either question, you will probably agree with the suggestions in this book. However, you are lacking a moral compass and/or are so spineless that a 6 year old can walk all over you. Face the fact that there probably isn't any book that will help you, and this one will only continue to feed your lack of character and self confidence.

If you answered No to both questions, you know more about "saying no" than you can get from this book. Buying this book would only infuriate you as it is filled with excuses, trickery and deceptions. All of which lead to the guilt that the book is supposed to help you avoid.

5 out of 5 stars A Big Help!.......2001-03-05

Sometimes you can get your hopes up about a self-help program like this, only to find the coverage shallow and not what you'd hoped. Not in this case!! All I can say is, if only I'd listened to these tapes ten--umm, twenty--years ago, I'd have improved my quality of life immeasurably. All that guilt and people-pleasing that was so unnecessary, and all one needs to know are these simple, unoffending techniques for sticking up for one's self, and living one's true life. If you have ever found yourself bending over backwards, to your own detriment, to please others--because you've been afraid to hurt their feelings--well, I've never said this about any other book or tape, but RUN, don't WALK, to get these tapes!! They will change your life. And--important!--this is not about being an overly assertive person who looks out for number one at the expense of everyone else. These tapes (and, I imagine, the book, too) actually incorporate incredible kindness and tact. Excellent!

A wonderful set of guidelines that will help you raise your child to act with conviction of thought, the thoughts that this book will help you instill through specific training techniques and excellent example.

Mr. Paur is not a professor of child development, what he is is a man whose experience with children takes him out of the ivory tower of acedemia and places him square into the arena of battle over substance abuse; the streets, our schools, and our homes.

1 out of 5 stars Clarification of "Spiral Bound".......2002-01-25

This book is described as "spiral bound" ... to be more exact, it's a "spiral bound notebook with lined writing paper pages and a few funny pictures". Perhaps it's to be used as a diary? I really don't know why it's full of lined paper. There are only 9 photos with witty captions which appear over and over and over throughout the book. Whereas the photos/captions are very funny, they are hard to see/read because they're not color photos, not even black and white photos - they're pale blue/green and white photos, the same color as the lines on the pages. I really didn't expect, or need, a "notebook". This one's going back.

5 out of 5 stars I like chicken just as much as the next guy..........2000-06-09

MikWright has taken interesting old family photographs, paired them up with witty sayings, then rolled it all into this nice little book. The best way I can describe the whole experience is like going to a family slide show (we've all been to them...) and having someone narrate what they thing is going on. I got the book after fanatically collecting MikWright's hysterical greeting cards. This stuff is GREAT!

4 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and fascinating look backstage........2000-07-26

The cost of Broadway musicals in the 1990s was so astronomical that when shows succeeded, they succeeded big. And when they flopped, they flopped even harder. Big was one of the latter. And, though this book often feels like it wants to paint the opposite picture, from the trials and tribulations it covers, when you've finished it, you know why it's failed. Most of the book is wonderfully informative and well-written, but the show's lingering death is glossed over in a very ineffective epilogue, and its post-Broadway life is not even discussed at all. If you are at all interested in how Broadway musicals are conceived of and produced, you shouldn't miss this book.

            5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......1997-04-07

Barbara Isenberg's living diary of "Big" reads like a fast paced novel of suspense. With everything in it's favor, it seems that "Big" will be a big hit, but the personal reflections of cast and crew reveal a deep undercurrent of doubt, fear and troubled feelings. After reading the book and sharing the journey, you feel the pain, the hope, the excitement and the ultimate disappointment. This wonderful work studies and embraces the birth pangs of creating a new work in musical theatre and the grieving period that comes with its closing. This is must reading for any theatre buff. Once you start it, you won't be able to put it down. I read it in one sitting

                Book Description

Inside the Sports Pages explores the working world of contemporary sports journalism through the eyes of the reporters, editors, athletes and media-relations people who inhabit it.

In this first comprehensive study of the work routines and professional ideologies involved in the manufacture of sports news, Mark Douglas Lowes presents a detailed and richly textured ethnographic account of life on the sports desk at a major Canadian daily newspaper. His wide-ranging analysis considers the role of the 'audience commodity' in sports news production, the dynamics of the newsroom, and the complex relations between reporters and their routine sources on the sports beat. The book concludes with an assessment of the ideological nature of sports news, and argues that sports coverage functions primarily as a promotional vehicle for the North American 'major league' sports industry. It will be of interest to anyone concerned about how the media report sports news- and the way they leave some of it unreported.

                Book Description

Kate O'Beirne is fed up with women who make the world worse.

Fueled by their persecution fantasies, modern feminists have been calling for radical social engineering to eliminate any differences between the sexes. They insist that any sex differences are the result of social construction, not biology. So they want boys and men to be reprogrammed and treated for their “pathology.”

Many of these women are public figures who use their notoriety in acting, pop music, television, or politics to spout unfounded bad ideas and harebrained schemes: Jane Fonda, Whoopi Goldberg, Hillary Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Maureen Dowd, and many more.

Kate O'Beirne captures the radical feminists in their own words, explains why they've got it all wrong, and shows why they have to be stopped—before they do even more damage to our schools, families, workplaces, and sports. BACKCOVER: “Anyone still operating under the delusion that `feminist' is synonymous with `pro-woman' should find this [book] a useful reality check.”
                —The Wall Street Journal

“Thank you, Kate O'Beirne! With wit and smarts she drives a stake through the heart of radical feminism, naming names, and takes down the modern sisterhood in a fearless, funny, and factual way. And it's long overdue. Know your enemy. Buy this gutsy book!”
                —Rush Limbaugh

“What a romp of a book. Funny and smart and typical of the shrewd, informed analysis we relish from Kate O'Beirne.”
—Peggy Noonan, author of John Paul the Great

“Once again, Kate O'Beirne's insights on politics and the culture make us think, laugh, and stand “up and cheer. Rolling back the influence of the false prophets of feminism and `grrrrrl power' takes facts, passion, and intellect—all of which we find in this important book.”
—Laura Ingraham, author of Shut Up & Sing

“Some women protest,`I'm a feminist, just not a radical feminist.' Kate O'Beirne is impatient with such qualifications. She is not any kind of feminist, and when you finish her sparkling new book, Women Who Make the World Worse, you won't be one either.”
                —Mona Charen, syndicated columnist

“Women Who Make the World Worse is, to be sure, an entertaining, often humorous exposé of the modernist feminist movement, but at the same time, it's a sober wake-up call.”
                —David Limbaugh, syndicated columnist

“O'Beirne brings wit and common sense to bear on the weird and rancorous world of orthodox feminism… she has written a rousing, scintillating, and badly needed book.”
                —Christina Hoff Sommers

I am a woman, and I do not beleive I am inferior to man. However, there is physical differences. I would prefer the man and woman fire fighters be separated. Let the feminist have their own ladder company that serve their own neighborhood. I want to see how the rest of the world react to that. I would move out of the female firefighter serve neighborhood so fast that it will leave skid marks on the road. Let the male and female army serve separated, and see which one perform better. If females can and will perform at the same level as the man, by all mean, serve as they please. However, if the standards has to be lower to accommodate anyone, I would prefer to have the top guys to protect me instead of the mediocra feminist that relied heavily on the man. It is a really sad thing to be equal regardless of the ability of different gender.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book of 2006!.......2007-07-15

Disregard the paranoid propaganda commentary above, "back to I Love Lucy". Radical feminists don't want you to think for yourselves. They want to teach your college students "The Vagina Monologues" and turn males in girls.

The best parts of this book concerns Title IX, why more females attend college than males. The book exposes Justice Ginsberg as a baby-hating radical from the ACLU. This is a book you're not supposed to read (a nod to the PIG books).

Readers of this should know about the online army of feminists who strategically trashed O'Beirne's book: "First of all I want to thank everyone who aided in the sacking of Kate O'Beirne's book Women Who Make the World Worse over at Amazon..."

You can locate that in a Google search for 'women who make world worse', it'll be the 8th hit on the Search Result page.

2 out of 5 stars Makes a Few Good Points, But They are Widely Scattered.......2007-06-01

I was sorry to discover, upon reading this book, that my wife and I went about raising our daughter incorrectly. Had we known, I am sure we would have done things differently. After all, she is only first in her class in high school, athletic, well liked, respected and being courted by top colleges while still in her sophomore year. I suppose, if we followed this authors advice, she would have been a better person, although I fail to see how.

The author believes, strongly, that women should stay home from work to raise children, no matter what the cost. Since I was the one to stay home, as my wife earned about 40% more than I at the time, we were putting our daughter at risk. In addition, we put her at risk by putting her into a limited day care, even though my daughter enjoyed it and wanted to continue when we attempted to pull her out. The author makes it clear that we should have moved from our house to an apartment, and given up our standard of living to allow my wife to stay home and me to continue work. That would have been what was best for our daughter. There is not alternate method allowed in her world.

Then there is the issue of sexual discrimination, which does not occur according to this author. It can't occur, other than on a limited basis, because market forces would keep it from occurring. Companies need women, and if discrimination were happening, women would quit, which would leave companies understaffed. If that were the case, I guess when my wife was told, during a performance review, that all women belonged at home taking care of the children and not working in corporate America, she was hearing things. In the author's world, that didn't occur, and neither did the large settlement from the company after the manager's treatment of women employees was exposed.

I could go on, but I think you get the point. There is an old saying about lies, damned lies and statistics, and it fits this book well. Much of it is the author's own view, with little to substantiate the opinion. The author misses the point, for the most part, that all people are not the same and that one size does not fit all. It is fine that she wishes to lead her life in the fashion that she does, but she makes no allowance for others to lead theirs in a different manner. If they do, they will fail themselves, their children, etc.

The author does, on occasion, make valid points, but they are too few and too far apart to make the book a worthwhile read, unless you want to lead a life trapped in the 1950s. While I agree that the feminist movement has gone over the edge, they have also done a lot to move the country forward and there is no credit given for that work.

                5 out of 5 stars A REAL EYE-OPENER!.......2007-05-13

A very important work on how radical feminism infiltrates American society to seduce it into grave moral decay, and speeds it down that "slippery slope".

O'Beirne is a mature woman who is funny, smart, and shrewd. She presents revealing insights into America's politics and culture, and how a small radical minority (among other radical minorities) with a squeaky wheel can do so much damage to the majority (us), who naively remains silent because we are too wrapped up in ourselves and our families to pay attention to the rug that is being pulled from under our feet.

With facts, passion, intellect, and courage, O'Beirne calls this menace to our society to task. This book is a breath of fresh air at a pivotal point in our nation's well being, not only for ourselves but also for our children and future generations.

5 out of 5 stars A nicely done overview of modern feminism's effects.......2007-03-21

I must say that I didn't think much of the jacket illustration, and I think that a better title could have been selected. But, the content of this book is first-rate and O'Beirne did a really god job researching her material and carefully citing which feminist said or wrote what and how they are mainstream and powerful within our culture and not on the 'fringe' of feminism. She also carefully identifies the main issues impacting the culture and the lives of people.

O'Beirne also cites some other good anti-feminist works and I've read all of them and I agree they are well worth studying.

I am pleased to see that there are quite a few women today - many of them EX-feminist - who have come to see what a crock feminism is and to see it's evil effects on marriage, the family, children, men, women, and on culture and society. I used to think that most women would just not speak up about it, but many have - although it has taken them a while to get around to it.

A feminist woman I know, saw me reading the book and she immediately started attacking it. All of her objections were wrong and I corrected each false assumption she made. She wound up fuming and stomped off. Well, that's ok I guess, this book isn't for everyone - but thank goodness these feminists are dwindling in number!

I hope that O'Beirne writes most books in this area. We need more writers like her.

I am in commercial construction and have used the productivity standards (SF/day, etc) in this book as a check against our subcontractors manpower projections to (try to) ensure they keep pace with the construction schedule. I am certainly not an expert on every trade and this book helps provide data when I suspect that subcontractors are being overly optmistic with their projections. All of the productivity standards I have used have referenced in the book have been within the ballpark. Despite innovations and new products in building construction, most items are still hand-built on site. (i.e. a concrete block wall is still a concrete block wall). I suspect that this book will remain useful to me for decades.

                        Book Description

Labor standards and how they relate to international trade are often the subject of contentious discussions. Many argue that nations with higher standards find themselves at a competitive disadvantage against nations with lower standards. Until now there has been no way to quantify this assertion; an empirical gap existed on the relationship between labor standards and trade due to the absence of measures for labor standards that could be applied internationally.

Block and Roberts remedy this situation by offering a method for comparing labor standards across political jurisdictions. They then apply this method to the United States and Canada, an exercise that allows them to settle the long-running dispute over whether or not Canada has higher standards than the United States, and if so, to what degree.

In addition, this book is associated with a Web site that makes available the data used to measure the labor standards in the two countries. Visitors may alter the weightings given to various standards by the authors to do their own analyses on trade and trade-related phenomena across multiple jurisdictions.
