Book Description

This celebrated survival guide for actors is still considered "the Bible of the Biz"-the most comprehensive book on the business of acting, informed by an inside view of how casting decisions are actually made-and it has now been updated and expanded to cover new on-line ways actors can promote their picture, rsum and video clips; interviewing and auditioning tips for the new crop of young actors; enhancing one's image; and finding jobs in emerging markets. Of course, the book still draws from dozens of industry professionals for authoritative advice on financial survival, networking, meeting agents and casting directors, the performing unions, selecting a wardrobe, studying a role-all the essential information actors have steadily relied on since 1987.

4 out of 5 stars what to wear, where to park, what to do when you get there..........2006-07-15

'How to Be a Working Actor' is divided into three sections: Nuts & Bolts, The Breaks, and Script Analysis.

Even after being in "the biz' for a few years, I found the first 217 pages (Nuts & Bolts) to be super helpful and informative. It suggests some of the most effective ways to create an actor resume, flattering colors and clothing types to wear to an agent interview, and the best books and guides to read to find work. It also explores ways to create a website, average wages for various acting jobs, and the differences between NY, LA and other cities (when I read this book I didn't want to move from NY to LA because of "parking", but when I did make the move I found out it wasn't that bad!)

This book features tips from casting directors and talent agents, and, like Michael Bofshever's 'Your Face Looks Familiar: Journey of a Working Actor', anecdotes from professional actors.

Maybe I shouldn't be writing this stellar review, when I'm an actor myself, looking to hone my skills and career abilility like the next person. But I believe the universe gives back, and there's a role out there for all of us.

4 out of 5 stars Good info for audition hunters.......2006-07-09

This book is very helpful for anyone seeking to land an audition - once inside the door, your own talent will carry you......or not. The book helps you get a foot in that doorway.

4 out of 5 stars a good start.......2003-09-23

I read this book when I first decided to risk a career in acting several years ago. It was very helpful in that it covered all the basics (and not-so-basics) that I would need to learn: terminology, career steps, pitfalls, different industries and cities. I still occasionally refer to it.

Yes, it is a little outdated now, and I would imagine it's more useful to those in LA or NYC with its heavy focus on TV and film, but I appreciated the little section on acting in Chicago. All in all, its breadth makes it a good investment.

FYI, for Chicago actors (bless your hearts), be sure to pick up "The Book," published by the trade paper PerformInk. A great (and necessary) resource guide to acting in Chicago.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2002-12-28

I like this book but is has been around for a while.
There are a couple of new books out there that are as good or better,
depending on where you are in your career.
Check our Twelve Step Plan To Beciming an Actor in LA.
It is a fabulous guide for anyone breaking in the business.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource and Must-Have.......2002-09-21

A very straight-forward resource for any aspiring actor. Novice or otherwise, this book gives the inside scoop and is honest about it. As I'm not one to want to put myself out-on-a-limb (no pun intended) without some plan of action and notion of how to stay solvent, what I really like about this book is the author's ability to fill in all the practical details and guide the reader through "The Business." In this day and age, where scams abound in and around Tinsel Towne, I wouldn't leave home to pound the pavement without first having read this book. I can't say enough good things about it!

        Book Description

In Blutopia Graham Lock studies the music and thought of three pioneering twentieth-century musicians: Sun Ra, Duke Ellington, and Anthony Braxton. Providing an alternative to previous analyses of their work, Lock shows how these distinctive artists were each influenced by a common musical and spiritual heritage and participated in self-conscious efforts to create a utopian vision of the future.
A century after Ellington’s birth, Lock reassesses his use of music as a form of black history and compares the different approaches of Ra, a band leader who focused on the future and cosmology, and Braxton, a contemporary composer whose work creates its own elaborate mythology. Arguing that the majority of writing on black music and musicians has—even if inadvertently—incorporated racial stereotypes, he explains how each artist reacted to criticism and sought to break free of categorical confines. Drawing on social history, musicology, biography, cultural theory, and, most of all, statements by the musicians themselves, Lock writes of their influential work.
Blutopia will be a welcome contribution to the literature on twentieth-century African American music and creativity. It will interest students of jazz, American music, African American studies, American culture, and cultural studies.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, but it's just ..........2001-06-26

This reads like poorly researched graduate-school blathering (which I expect it is).

Mr Lock appears to have approached his sources with his thesis already formed and to have avoided all contact with anything that might force him to reconsider. Check out his footnote admitting that his use of Ellington's song title is totally inappropriate to what he's trying to make it mean, yet he decided to use it anyway!

His comparison of Sun Ra's mythological musings and autobiographical confessions with slave narratives is ridiculous in that it reveals a thorough lack of knowledge of comparative religion. The author acts as though the experience of death and rebirth or of choosing a new name to reflect a new station in life were phenomena unique to (and invented by) African-Americans. He clearly didn't research this topic thoroughly.

This is a really shoddy work and not worth your time, much less your money.

5 out of 5 stars A Groundbreaking Study that Any Fan of Jazz Must Read.......2000-08-18

Graham Lock's "Blutopia" stands as one of the great explorations into three of the most enigmatic performers in the history of creative music: Sun Ra, Duke Ellington, and Anthony Braxton. When I first heard that this book going to be published, I worried that Lock's approach might not be able to draw a strong connection between these amazing performers, or that it might be too journalistic and not critical enough, like some of his previous work. After reading just a few pages, it became obvious that this is a first-rate work of scholarship that should be required reading for anyone who is interested in creative music. This will undoubtedly stand among the classic texts written about creative music, along with the brilliant studies by Valerie Wilmer, John Szwed, and Mike Heffley.

Lock examines the common musical heritage of his subjects, showing how their visionary thoughts become manifest in their music, often amidst the crippling misconceptions perpetuated by the press. He delves deeply into the actual interviews and writings of Ra, Ellington, and Braxton, establishing connections between their work and a larger spectrum of academic, religious, and political thought. Particularly interesting is the section on Anthony Braxton, which is a welcome addition to the author's previous work "Forces in Motion." Lock examines Braxton's operas, including even those that have not yet been made available to the public. His discussion of Braxton's use of "text" is an illuminating contribution, and one that is much needed in contemporary scholarship on Braxton.

In short, Lock shows how the art and thought of Braxton, Ellington, and Ra provide those who experience their work with not only the opportunity to view the world with an alternative paradigm, but how in many ways we, as collective humanity, should forget about "history" (which has failed) and start believing in "mystery." The mystery is real--and it is true--and I can think of no better preface to read before embarking on Sun Ra's trips to space--or Braxton's forays into affinity dynamics and meta-reality--than Lock's "Blutopia." It is a masterpiece.

          Book Description

Jazz is now 100 years old, a venerable American institution predicated on the unpredictable. But recent signs-ranging from Ken Burns's documentary Jazz: A History of America's Music to the dominance, in terms of sales, of reissues over new recordings-have made many question whether jazz's past has now become more important than its future, or whether jazz has any future at all. In this book, composed entirely via e-mail, 10 leading jazz critics take on the various issues surrounding jazz's future-the dominance of mainstream jazz, its spread around the world, the difficulty of making a living playing it, the growth of repertory jazz, the dearth of interest among young African Americans, the paradoxically backward-looking nature of the avant-garde, and many others. Their conclusions are as surprising, witty, and edgy as the music itself.

              Book Description

Jazz has always been an experimental art form, pushing the boundaries of the mainstream, searching for the new. As Howard Mandel reveals in Future Jazz, jazz today is still reaching out in exciting new directions. In a series of vividly drawn portraits and intimate, in-depth interviews with musicians, composers, experimenters, and club owners, Mandel captures the vitality and the passion of the modern jazz scene, from the 1970s to the present. The most successful jazz players of recent years have been the so-called Young Lions, and Mandel includes three extensive interviews with the Lion King himself, Wynton Marsalis, who shares his philosophy of jazz and his pointed opinions on the contemporary scene. But most of the book focuses on the more experimental and avant garde trends. The book traces the development of some of the dominant new jazz groups--talking to Lester Bowie of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and to members of the World Saxophone Quartet--and examines the work of a range of major jazz figures such as David Murray, Henry Threadgill, Joe Lovano, Geri Allen, and singer Cassandra Wilson. And in a great departure from other jazz books, Mandel examines the powerful influence of rock on jazz. He chats with guitarist John McLaughlin, whose groundbreaking collaboration with Miles Davis set off the fusion revolution, and probes the inventive ideas of other jazz musicians with roots in gospel, blues, and soul, such as George Benson and James "Blood" Ulmer. Ranging from the Knitting Factory to Lincoln Center, Future Jazz is an indispensable guide to today's scene and a valuable roadmap to the music of tomorrow.

It's called "weed" for a reason--marijuana grows practically anywhere, and it has infiltrated deeply into societies around the globe. In Pot Planet, journalist Brian Preston scores big, compiling reports from Thailand, Amsterdam, Australia, his home in Vancouver, B.C., and other hotbeds of the high life. Part travelogue, part buyer's guide, the book is largely experiential reporting--where Preston went, whom he met, how high he got--but never strays far from its strong anti-prohibition message. The rules concerning growing, sales, and use are different nearly everywhere he goes, but there are always rules, and by the end of his travels he finds his paranoia strongly taxed. Preston has a knack for describing the unique qualities of his surroundings, whether natural or cultural; temples in Nepal and muggings in London are as real for the reader as they were for the author. Interviews with growers of all scales, street consumers, and occasional users from Tangier to Kathmandu keep the reader thinking globally, while the closing "pot polemic" encourages Americans to act locally. While Pot Planet won't turn on those who aren't already interested in the herb, statistics suggest that such readers are in the minority. --Rob Lightner

                        Book Description

Marijuana is cultivated in nearly every region of the world, from the jungles of Laos to the arid hills of northern California. It's smoked and enjoyed for medicinal, spiritual, and recreational purposes by an estimated 200 million people worldwide. In Pot Planet, journalist Brian Preston sets out on a global ganja safari to explore strange new cannabis cultures, to seek out new growers, activists, and other reefer revolutionaries ... and to boldly get baked with each of them. Preston's journeys take him across every strata of pot cultivation and enjoyment. In the Canadian Kootenays he meets hemp farmers struggling to harvest their crop on the fringes of legitimacy. In Cambodia and Morocco he explores the final frontiers of Third World weed enthusiasts. In northern California he takes a clear-eyed look at the medicinal marijuana movement, seeing both its promises and its problems. In England, Switzerland, and Spain he observes grudging governments catching up to public tolerance. And at the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam he joins in the raucous multiday tasting competition and celebration at the international summit of the best breeders, growers, and connoisseurs in the world. Part investigative travelogue, part cultural history, part polemic for the unfettered enjoyment of nature's most perfect and pleasing herb, Pot Planet is an unforgettable odyssey into the multifaceted world of hemp, full of wit, insight, and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars "A toker's odyssey to the four corners of the Earth" .......2006-03-13

In 1998, writer Brian Preston received a call that would forever change his life...

The contents of that phone call were that, he was supposed to write a piece for Rolling Stone Magazine about the marijuana culture in Vancouver (the place which he called home for 9 years). Known as the west-coast stoner dude (by his editors) they saw Brian fit for this assignment.

In Vancouver he was able to obtain status of one of the marijuana judges at the first ever Cannibus Culture Cup. Merely a spec on the grand spectrum of his journey, nonetheless, it's still where it begins. His travels then take him to: Nepal - Southeast Asia - Austrailia - England - Amsterdam - Switzerland - Spain - Morocco - the Kootenays - and finally back to the ol' U.S.A..

The main theme portreyed throughout this book was Exploration - the need to search for greater understanding of something (in this case, pot). Although nowadays we no longer call people who are journeying around the world in the search of a broader explanation explorers, we call them tourists or fanatics, but in this case Brian Preston, is most definately the Christopher Columbus of marijuana culture (at least to me he is).

If you like reading about "HIGHER" travels then this is most definately the book for you. But if you are intolerant to marijuana and silly activists scoured throughout the world who all have the same goal - legalization, then perhaps this isn't the book for you...

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to global ganja.......2002-09-13

Brian Preston documents his travels as he encounters the people, places and events that make up the core of the world's modern cannabis culture.

Preston's flobal ganja voyage begins in BC, at the first Cannabis Culture Cup in February 2000, held at Marc Emery's home on the Sunshine Coast. From there, Preston travels the world's weedy hotspots, sampling buds and meeting the locals in Nepal, Southeast Asia, Australia, England, Amsterdam, Morocco, BC, and the USA.

Cannabis Culture readers will recognize many of the people who Preston encounters on his travels. In Amsterdam he tokes with Sensi Seeds founder Ben Dronkers, in Australia he hangs at the Nimbin Hemp Embassy and attends their annual Mardi Grass, In California he discusses DEA raids with med-pot icon Dennis Peron. In Vancouver he gets high on buds from Marc Emery, and discusses activism with locals like David Malmo-Levine.

Pot Planet is a perfect snapshot of the people, places and events that make up the global ganja culture during the dawn of the new millennium. The book is written in a friendly, conversational style. It's an easy and enlightening read, and will be enjoyed by both chronic and non-toker alike.

                        5 out of 5 stars It's a Big Stoned World Out There.......2002-07-24

Thirty years ago, there were plenty of late night delirious conversations about how someday soon you could buy grass at your local supermarket. But pot somehow is a much bigger deal than anyone had thought, a world-wide obsession over a simple weed that millions find fun or useful, and others find perilous. So Brian Preston, a Canadian journalist, decided he would do a worldwide survey of the international marijuana scene. It was a perfect self-assignment: he likes vagabonding, and he likes getting stoned. The result, _Pot Planet: Adventures in Global Marijuana Culture_ (Grove Press) is a hilarious travelogue through smoke filled rooms, with a subtly serious message: "What's more likely to destroy the earth, pot or pollution? And there's a war on pot?"

Preston is a dedicated journalist, or at least he loves his subject so much that he is happy to go to enormous lengths to investigate it. "For much of the research and most of the writing of this book, I was high on marijuana. Now then - it can't be _that_ amotivating." He becomes a judge of the Cannabis Culture Cup, with the difficult task of rating all these strains, and more, in the categories of appearance, fragrance, texture, taste, aftertaste, and stone (and he remarks on the difficulties of evaluating that last category after you have already judged other entrants; he can't, like a wine taster, just spit it out). He has funny stories from all over. "If you want to score anywhere in Asia," Preston advises, "just find a place where they're playing Bob Marley music." In the town of Nimbin, Australia, there are "grass palaces," houses paid for by pot cultivation: "They were hippies; now they're middle class." One wants to franchise pot restaurants in the shape of a giant bong, the Big Bong Burger Bar. In Switzerland, searching out contacts, Preston asks a city employee, a tourist helper, "Do you know where I could by _hemp_ products around here? Like clothing and stuff?" She thinks a minute. "Hmmm. Hemp clothing... No... But we have three stores where you can buy grass!" In Morocco a shady tourist guide assures him about purportedly fine hashish, "Half a kilo, Brian! Very easy to hide in a suitcase for the flight home!" In Canada, backwoods growers have given death threats to those who wish to introduce hemp production for fiber, because of the fear that the low-stoning hemp will cross pollinate and ruin the intoxicant varieties.

In every chapter, Preston shows that American politics have affected global marijuana in ways that not even the most rabidly anti-pot politician would favor. Naturally, Preston knows just what the US and the world ought to do with marijuana laws, but he usually withholds proselytization on the issue. He is an amusing writer with clever comparisons; a stoner holds in his toke so deeply that he eventually disgorges "a cloud of smoke huge and heavy enough to show up on a satellite weather shot." He withholds most of his serious arguments until his last chapter, which is quite accurately titled "Pot Polemic." And he has graceful ambivalence about what legality might bring, having seen a bit of it in Amsterdam, pushed like booze and tobacco: "Is this what legalization would be like? Would pot become just another consumer product, marketed like any other line of goods in Babylon?" Maybe there would be disadvantages, yes, but this book is indispensable for anyone who wants an amusing survey of the current world marijuana situation. Americans, especially, would do well to catch this bigger picture.

5 out of 5 stars great summer read.......2002-05-30

Having just completed 'Pot Planet', I'd like to say how great this book is. Being an lover of all things ganja, I am so pleased to see someone finally writing about the truths behind the marajuana culture. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

This travelogue/cultural history study is a fast-paced peek into the history and hypocrises of this happy herb. Without being too much of a tour-guide, and more like a buddy you're bumming around the world with, Preston takes us from the sweet, sticky buds of Vancouver, B.C, to the opium-laced weed of the Far East, stopping at places like England, Switzerland, Spain, Austrailia and the marajuana mecca, the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam on the way.

I recommend this book to anyone who is not able to vacation this year - see the world without leaving your couch!

The book itself read a little fast, with the stops he makes feeling all too brief. Having visited some of the places mentioned myself, I felt there is more that could have been said, but as always, time is a factor.

All in all though, this book is finally a true testament to pot-smoking throughout the world, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys this natural plant, in all her splendor.
