Worth a look, but hit the library first........2000-01-08

I picked up this book in a used bookstore. The absolutely horrid cover design and the intriguing title attracted me. There are some really funny bits in here, and they are made many times better if you have background in science, medicine, academia, or even a technical profession. However, I would recommend picking it up used or checking it out from your library before you consider buying it...there are some rather bland passages and some truly terrible writing in spots. I enjoy this sort of book, but I would not pay the full cover price for it.

Ish has escaped from the cruel Salt Men of the North Land, but his adventures are far from over. When he finds himself in the Land of the White Bear that Ate the Sun, Ish can only think of surviving. Rescued by the Shaman, Ish learns that there is more to life than he ever guessed. As he learns to heal the people who come to the Shaman for help, Ish learns to love the icy and wind blasted land where he lives. But what is "the giving of knowledge" and why does the old Shaman not want to talk about it? The author has been travelling from strength to strength with his writings,and this is the best book so far. I can't want for Jack Lasenby to write another book in this series. This is one of those great books that is hard to put down, and I had to read it in one sitting because I didn't want to miss anything.

Accurate and Very Helpful.......2007-05-12

This book essentially does what you'd expect it too...help you learn the songs. I don't have a seven string guitar, of course I had to adapt things for a regular guitar. Still, it's not a big problem. Minerva and Battle-Axe, both are played on six string, so you won't even have to deal transposing anything in the case of those two songs.

There's something mesmerizing and addictive about watching people on the fringe of existence, people pushed to the edge, people in dire straits or even close. In the 1920s and especially during the Great Depresssion of the 1930s, dance marathon fads played on this morbid fascination we have for people with hard-luck stories, people down on the luck, people at the end of their rope.

With uncommon depth and insight, Frank M. Calabria analyzes audience responses to these weird spectacles, the painful agony of the competition, and the abusive treatment by walkathon show organizers and their emcees. This 1993 book also includes a wonderful collection of period photographs. As a former psychology professor, Calabria is qualified to present what is surely a unique analysis of the increasingly tortured conditions of contestants' emotion state as a dance marathon progressed.
