Courage and Country.......2004-03-28
This book gives a good overview of the life of a very successful immigrant who has disappeared into the pages of history. It also provides a historical perspective of the US during James Shields life with some different information on the early days of Abraham Lincoln's political career. An easy way to remind yourself of history you may have forgotten.

Read all 4 !!.......2005-01-21
I just reread all 4 Kiltumber books by Niall and Chris and I must say I enjoyed them more now in 2005 than I did 9 years ago. To experience the trials and tribulations of this family in Kilmihil makes me wonder how many people followed their path and relocated to Ireland. Now, 20 years after the 1st book the children are grown,Niall is a world class and best selling novelist and Chris about to publish again soon in 2005.
Read all 4 books in order and I promise you'll be tempted to move to County Clare.
Not quite as enjoyable as others in this series.......2001-12-24
Over the last few weeks, I've become quite the fan of Niall and Chris. Reading or acquiring all of their books -- fiction and nonfiction. This book left me feeling a bit disappointed but at the same time wanting an update.
I had to smile at all the visitors from abroad showing up at their doorstep --- I envisioned myself doing the same thing. Now I doubt I would show up unannounced -- but I still will make an effort to see the town of Kilmihil.
This book definitely should be read after reading at least the first book -- O' Come Ye Back to Ireland. I doubt that those who haven't read the first book will be able to keep interested. And whereas the first book made settling in the west of Ireland sound romantic, Niall Williams seems to be discouraging people from doing what he and Chris.
That said, I am glad I read it and loved hearing about young Joseph and his sister Deirdre.
Change in the West of Ireland.......2000-02-24
I have thoroughly enjoyed this fourth installment in the saga of Niall & Christine, and Deirdre and Joseph (the first chapter tells of their adoption of Joseph.) This book is very contemplative in nature, and focuses on what it is to belong to a community, a society, a nation. What does it mean to be Irish? to be American? And how are these things changing? Change is the other theme that is present throughout the book. There have been many changes in the West since Niall & Christine first moved there: some good, some bad, but most not so easily classified as "good" or "bad". This book is very thought provoking, and a very enjoyable read. Thank you Niall and Christine for continuing to share your lives with us.

Book Description
This 13 year old equestrian series is still running strong with the publication of it's 66th title!
Samantha is in love and has finally found the perfect horse. But is her luck about to run out?
Samantha and Tor's month–long honeymoon in Ireland turns into a much longer stay when Samantha meets Finn, a massive sporthorse that is a descendant of Red Rum, steeplechasing's greatest horse. Samantha is enjoying such success with Finn that she and Tor settle into the idea that they'll be in Ireland for the rest of their lives.
Then Tor gets an urgent call to return home to Kentucky. With the Grand National just weeks away, Tor urges Samantha to stay in Ireland but she still finds herself torn between her husband and her beloved horse. If only she didn't have such a nagging feeling about leaving Finn behind. She's sure something horrible is about to happen.
Check out the bio and photo of famed horse Red Rum inside!

Great Book.......2005-12-06
this was an awesome book to read and i would reccommend it to any horse lover. The only problem that i had with this book was that the author said that the Famous steeplechase horse Red Rum was a stallion, when he was actually a gelding. In the book,Red rum had sired a foal. But since he was actually a gelding, the truth is that Red Rum,could never have sired a foal, since he was fixed.
Sam's Absence Explained. SAVE TB!!.......2005-01-15
I enjoyed this book because of the fact that explained where Same and Tor disappeared to during the huge generation gap. Ireland was described wonderfully and all of the characters there were unique and well rounded. There were quite a few mistakes though, like the glaring fact that Red Rum was a gleding and couldn't have possible had any descendents like Finn. All in all it was a pretty good book that did a good job in satisfying all the questions that many of us loyal readers had.
The reason that the two Samantha books (65, 66) and the Lost Diaries were written was because Harper Collins listened to what the readers wanted and came thought. Now Harper is planning on ending the TB series abruptly after #72. I hope Harper is listening to the readers now! PLEASE SAVE THOROUGHBRED!!

Glad to see her back!.......2005-01-10
Ever since I started reading Thoroughbred books, Samantha was my favorite character. So I was thrilled to see this about her time in Ireland; the subject had previously been such a murky area for the series. It was nothing short of adorable in most parts, and it did a nice job wrapping up some of the previously unexplained elements in the series.
Of course, this makes it all the more upsetting to hear that the publisher has decided to end the series. I've been a fan for a decade and I know I'm not alone in saying that. Hopefully, as a previous reviewer said, Harper Collins will reconsider its decision based on reader demand. Trust me that it exists. ;)
sammy's back.......2005-01-08
though i think this book was kind of farfetched and thrown together, i'm really glad that we finally got to see why sammy and tor moved to ireland, and similarly, why inspired them to move back. i'm also glad this flashback wasn't in diary form. it's so exciting that's sammy's pregnant with twins!
hopefully the editors will listen to reader demand, which inspired this book, and reconsider their decision to cancel the series.
Samantha's Life- EXPLAINED.......2004-08-21
This book was well awaited. Finally a long over due book about why samantha decided to live in Ireland was written. Samantha goes to a B&B in Ireland and loves it there so much she decided to stay. With eventing, show-jumping, and Finn Mcoull (?) she decides life cant be any better in Ireland with Tor. But when a Family emergancy forces them both back to Kentucky, Sammy is torn. Does she spend her life in Ireland with the most fantastic horse ever? Or does she choose her own husband? She goes with Tor, deciding he shouldnt face family matters alone but she has a constant nagging about Finn. She knew he was the perfect horse and she cant get over the fact that he is back in Ireland. Tor wants to surprise sammy since she was so depressed. Can you guess what he did? Yep he bought Finn and moved him to KY. Go figure. All in all this was an over due book and im looking forward to the next :)

A thoroughly interesting look at the great Eddie Irvine.......1999-09-28
As an Irvine follower, I really enjoyed reading Adam Cooper's book, which details not only the relatively recent Ferrari section of Eddie's career but gives the reader an insight into just how he developed his career to the F1 stage. A very entertaining look at the soon to be world champion (if not 99, then 2000!), including some dodgy photos from the early years!
GREAT!.......1998-12-10
Awesome Book! You don't often find information on Steady Eddie, but this book covers it all!

Book Description
This book takes you, raid by raid, through the author's tour of operational duty over the last five months of 1944. It is a bomber pilot's story, but it is also about the grinding operational pressure, the brotherhood of the crew and fears of injury and death. It is about a squadron of Bomber Command that bore a barely-equaled burden in operational effort and losses. It is about young airmen the author knew, who lived and too often died amid the turmoil in enemy skies.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Account!.......2003-05-16
In his book `Luck and a Lancaster', Harry Yates offers the reader a chance to follow the author through his tour of operations as a Lancaster pilot during the last five months of 1944. The story begins with the author as a young English lad wanting to join the Royal Air Force to fly fighters just after the Battle of Britain (as all young English boys surely wanted!).
We follow Yates through his initial training at flight school and then into training for multi-engine aircraft in Canada, something he wasn't expecting. We then read of his exploits as an instructor and then finally his posting to a Operational RAF Squadron flying one of the great bombers of the Second World War, the Avro Lancaster.
Young Harry Yates ends up with 75 Squadron (RNZAF) based at Mepal in August of 1944 with a task of completing 30 operations against occupied Europe and Germany. Although by this period of the war the conflict in the air had swung towards the Allies it was still a very dangerous occupation flying in Bomber Command. This is the guts of the story, flying with Harry Yates and his crew in one of the many Lancaster's allotted to them through the 30 missions required to complete their tour of Ops.
I found this story truly amazing and it was so well told I was totally immersed in the narrative. I must admit it has been awhile since I have read such an interesting and captivating account of war in the air and I cannot imagine anyone who has an interesting in aerial warfare not being taken by this honest and enjoyable book.
Not once did I find the book bogging down in too much detail, not once did it flag or slow down in pace, even the author's account of his training and instructional flights were full of interest, humour and occasional sadness. This is a great testament to the young crews who flew in Bomber Command doing a job without question that cost many their lives. Well done to the author!

Book Description
When 17-year-old Paul Williams began publishing Crawdaddy! magazine in 1966, just as the American counterculture was poised to explode, the world was only beginning to take rock music as seriously as the intelligencia took folk and jazz. Preceding both Rolling Stone and Creem, Crawdaddy! has gone down in history as the pioneer of rock journalism, and was the training ground for many rock writers who would later become stars in their own right. Now, Paul Williams has gathered the best of Crawdaddy! into a revealing anthology that captures a fascinating historical moment when Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, the Grateful Dead and Buffalo Springfield were unknown and as yet unheard, and inspired writers were struggling to find the language with which to describe this new, vital music. Peter Guralnick, Ralph Gleason, Richard Farina, Jon Landau, Samuel R. Delany and Richard Meltzer are just a few of the later-day luminaries who cut their teeth writing for Crawdaddy! and who are showcased in this stunning collection. Featuring essays and notes by Williams and over 25 photos, The Crawdaddy! Book is a must for anyone who loves the spirit of Rock 'n' Roll. Paul Williams is the author of more than 25 books, of which the best-known are Outlaw Blues, Das Energi and Bob Dylan, Performing Artist, the acclaimed three-part series. He is a world-renowned scholar and leading authority on the works of musicians Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson and Neil Young, and science fiction writers Philip K. Dick and Theodore Sturgeon. His most recent book is The 20th Century's Greatest Hits (A "Top 40" List) (Forge/St. Martins, 2000). Williams currently lives in San Diego, California.
Customer Reviews:
Great Compilation of the Original Rock Magazine!.......2003-06-17
Paul Williams is one of originators of serious writing about the whole rock music scene. This is a great collection of his early pieces from the original Crawdaddy magazine, which was his brainchild. In addition, check out his other writings. He remains an enthusiastic observer/participant of music and pop culture.
Long-overdue tribute to the first rock journal.......2002-09-28
Excerpts and recollections from the first 19 issues (February 1966-October 1968) of Crawdaddy!, the first magazine of serious rock music coverage and criticism. This was the period when rock & roll was transforming into rock, when new groups and sounds were a weekly happening, and the rock album was asserting its place in the market. It is fascinating to read the articles, reviews, and interviews by some of rock music's future premier writers such as editor/publisher Paul Williams, Jon Landau, Richard Meltzer, and Ed Ward, and to relive the history of the music in the reprinted news items and record release notices. Fans of rock history and pop music journalism will enjoy this long-overdue celebration of the orgin of the form.
Book Description
In the aftermath of the Heyset disaster in 1985, Margaret Thatcher declared war on football hooliganism. The Chelsea Headhunters were the worst offenders and one man was deemed public enemy number one: Steve "Hickey" Hickmott. This is the story of his battle to clear his name.
Customer Reviews:
Superb story!.......2004-02-14
I was a little cautious during the first chapter, but this actually turned out to be a great book! The book has some stories of violence, fighting, etc. that you find in other books about football violence. However, it shifts the focus from the crowd control tactics that are detailed in other books, but speaks of the undercover tactics that the police used, and the deceipt and fabricated evidence used to get convicitons. It really shows football violence and its policing as a microcosm of the UK's overall problems with police tactics in every walk of life. As I lived in London when this book takes place and used to go to Chelsea games, I really enjoyed this book for personal reasons!
