AA Snake Oil.......2007-04-18
1. The Twelve Steps do not work as a program of recovery from drug or alcohol problems.
o The A.A. failure rate ranges from 95% to 100%. Sometimes, the A.A. success rate is actually less than zero, which means that A.A. indoctrination is positively harmful to people, and prevents recovery. Some tests have shown that even receiving no treatment at all for alcoholism is much better than receiving A.A. treatment:
o One of the most enthusiastic boosters of Alcoholics Anonymous, Professor George Vaillant of Harvard University, who is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. (AAWS), showed by his own 8 years of testing of A.A. that A.A. was worse than useless -- that it didn't help the alcoholics any more than no treatment at all, and it had the highest death rate of any treatment program tested -- a death rate that Professor Vaillant himself described as "appalling". While trying to prove that A.A. treatment works, Professor Vaillant actually proved that A.A. kills. After 8 years of A.A. treatment, the score with Dr. Vaillant's first 100 alcoholic patients was: 5 sober, 29 dead, and 66 still drinking.
(Nevertheless, Vaillant is still a Trustee of Alcoholics Anonymous, and he still wants to send all alcoholics to A.A. anyway, to "get an attitude change by confessing their sins to a high-status healer." That is cult religion, not a treatment program for alcoholism.)
o The A.A. dropout rate is terrible. Most people who come to A.A. looking for help in quitting drinking are appalled by the narrow-minded atmosphere of fundamentalist religion and faith-healing. The A.A. meeting room has a revolving door. The therapists, judges, and parole officers (many of whom are themselves hidden members of A.A. or N.A.) continually send new people to A.A., but those newcomers vote with their feet once they see what A.A. really is. Even A.A.'s own triennial surveys, conducted by the A.A. headquarters (the GSO), say that:
X 81% of the newcomers are gone within 30 days,
X 90% are gone in 3 months, and
X 95% are gone at the end of a year.
That automatically gives A.A. a failure rate of at least 95%. But the GSO does not count all of those people who only attend a few meetings before quitting -- they don't qualify as "members". (That amounts to "cherry-picking".) If we included them, then the numbers would be much worse.
And also note that the claimed five percent of A.A. newcomers who are still left after one year is exactly the same number as the usual rate of spontaneous remission among alcoholics -- five percent per year. That is, in any randomly-selected population of alcoholics, approximately five percent per year will finally get sick and tired of being sick and tired, and they will just quit drinking. And the Harvard Medical School says that 80% of those successful quitters do it by themselves, alone, without any "treatment program" or any "support group".
If we subtract the normal spontaneous remission rate for alcoholism of five percent per year from A.A.'s claimed success rate of five percent, we get zero for A.A.'s real effective cure rate.
A.A. does not actually make anybody quit drinking; it just takes the credit for the people who were going to quit anyway. A.A. is just taking the credit for peoples' efforts to save their own lives.
o The Twelve Steps are actually a hopelessly bad program for recovery:
X Cult religion is not a good cure for alcoholism, and A.A. most assuredly is a cult religion.
X One of the biggest problems with the Twelve-Step program is the learned helplessness caused by the First Step, where people are taught to confess that they are "powerless over alcohol." This leads many people to believe that once they have a drink, that a full-blown relapse and total loss of self-control is inevitable and unavoidable. So some people go on suicidally-intense binges, thinking that it is pointless to try to resist temptation.2 --
X Step Two is just as bad: it teaches people that they are insane, and that only a Supernatural Being can restore them to sanity -- which means that they are helpless, and cannot heal themselves.
X Then Step Three teaches a lifestyle of infantile narcissism and passive dependency, where A.A. members turn control of their wills and their lives over to "the care of God as we understood Him", and then they expect God to take care of them and run their lives for them, and solve all their problems, and wait on them hand and foot, and do all of the hard work for them from then on...
"Let Go And Let God"
is their official motto, their lifestyle, and their approach to problem-solving.
X Then Steps Four through Ten induce guilt in the members by forcing members to make lists of all of their sins and flaws, and "defects of character" and "moral shortcomings", and confess every intimate dirty little secret to another A.A. member who isn't even ordained clergy, or even sworn to secrecy.
X In Step Eleven you are supposed to "channel" God and receive psychic work orders and power.
X Then Step Twelve tells you to go recruiting, to draft more alcoholics into this madness.
o There is also experimental evidence that the A.A. teachings about powerlessness lead to binge drinking. In a controlled study of A.A.'s effectiveness, court-mandated offenders who had been sent to A.A. for several months were engaging in five times as much binge drinking as the no-treatment control group which got no A.A. "help".
o A.A. boosters and propagandists constantly repeat the Big Lie that A.A. works great, and A.A. with its Twelve Steps is the way that everybody recovers:
something to think about.......2007-03-06
I have not read this book but I just recently began going to Alanon and am glad I stumbled upon this. It makes me realize that I need to always be aware of the people around me. That just because they are in Alanon does not mean they are good people. So far the people Ive met seem very good natured but I will stay alert for warning signs and not get too close. I will take what helps me and leave what does not. If anyone ever makes me uncomfortable then I will stay away from them. I will trust my instincts while attending Alanon. Really any where you go in this world no matter how "good and pure" the people and program may seem there is always going to be bad mixed in. That is why I like that the twelve step programs say to take what you can use and leave the rest. I will not stop attending Alanon because of this book, but I will be more aware.
Where the Criticism Matches the Criticized.......2005-06-03
...in silliness!
Mr. Goodner probably has some good points to make -- I doubt anything Oprah pushes is really good -- but to spend, what, five pages going on about Plato's Cave allegory is pedantic in the extreme: we get the point, let's move on....
Now, I said that the author "probably" has some good points in his book because I haven't read it -- just browsing the few scanned pages turned me off (the two-star rating reflects those few pages scanned in). I'm no codependency cult fan; I just wanted to hear this side of the matter, but the style of writing was so pedantic and smug as to have made me think that reading this would be a real bore, too!
Hopefully the tone of the writing will be amended -- and the pedanticism excised -- in a future edition. Again, there are probably good points here against codependent psycho-babble (I myself don't know enough either way right now)...just wish they were made more intelligently and, even, more humanely.
Truely True.......2004-10-23
This book is truely funny and in a fun way true. I'm taking everything I read in this book to heart. I'm just sick that I have been played for a fool for so long by a codependant therapist. Well that is over now! Thank you Rick you saved my life.

Amazon.com
An Interview with Linkin Park
We got a chance to talk with Phoenix from Linkin Park and their photographer, Greg Watermann, about the new book. Here's what they had to say.
Amazon: In which ways is this book different than a tour program?
Phoenix: Our goal with From the Inside was to give our fans a more intimate view of what the Meteora touring cycle looked like. From studio, to video, to touring, the book captures moments spanning over a two year period. A tour book is a souvenir from a show.
Amazon: The book seems to lack a focus on the typography that has become an important part of your image. Is this intentional?
Phoenix: Everything we do is intentional. I've never been asked about our "typography" before... good eye.
Amazon: None of the photos are credited to band members. We think you need to get cameras.
Phoenix: Do you sell cameras on Amazon?
Amazon: Which photos best capture the intensity of the band on the road?
Phoenix: The live photos... especially those that show parts of the crowd.
Amazon: Which photos show fans your lighter side?
Phoenix: Any in which we are laughing/smiling.
Greg Watermann (Photographer): I do all my live photography with a Nikon F3. Everyhting is shot on film - Fujichrome 400 (color) and T-Max 3200 (b&w), using various ASA's depending on the venue. No autofocus. No zoom lenses. And I never use a flash.
Shooting Linkin Park live is like photographing a basketball game standing in the center of the court. There's so much energy on stage; they're constantly moving. And, it's happening in front of tens of thousands of people. The key is to be quick and accurate, and never get in the band's way.
Having an "All Access" situation is the ONLY way to get the best shots at a concert, but I have to make sure I'm not a distraction from the show. I have to figure out how comfortable a band is with having me around, and then operate right at the edge of that zone. That's always where the best photos are....
Amazon: Is it true that dipping the tip of a towel in water makes it a more effective weapon against your opponent? Describe your technique.
Phoenix: Definitely. The technique is simple. It's all about the snap. Toss your towel gingerly towards your opponent, and then snap it back quickly.
Amazon: Halo 2 is out. Does this mean we'll see a string of tour dates soon?
Phoenix: We have to write and record an album first... unless people would want to come out and see us play Halo 2 against each other.
Amazon: What are the the best rock books of all time?
Phoenix: Motley Crue's The Dirt
Amazon: What 10 CDs would you choose to accompany you on a deserted island?
Phoenix: Can I have instructional survival cd's?

Customer Reviews:
A must have for any Lp's fans!!!.......2006-03-13
My friend and I are vietnamese fans of LP and we must say that it's really hard for us here to buy anything about LP we like, because most websites never ship to Vietnam. But luckily, a friend of mine told me about this site. And the first thing we bought when we entered this site was "From the inside". This book is something I think every diehard fans of LP must have. It's full of beautiful pictures, lovely quotes from LP members and commentaries of Mr Hahn about all the videos in Meteora album. I found out a lot more about all the LP members and how they made music. You should really buy this book, I swear you'll be satisfied with it.
From the Inside: Linkin Park's Meteora.......2005-08-06
If you are a Linkin Park fan, want to know more about the band, or just want to recognize how six down to earth guys spend their time on tour, this book's for you. This is a diary of life on the road. It is filled with beautiful pictures, and look inside minds of one of the greatest rock bands in history! A must have for any Linkin Park fan!
From The Inside: Linkin Parks meteora Review.......2005-03-01
From the Inside: Linkin Parks Meteora is a really good book. It tells you how the band started out and gives you interesting facts about the band, Linkin Park. The book tells you what the fans mean to the band, and where the root of their songs and music comes from. A 'Rolling Stone' reporter gives you his insight on the band, and talks about the interview he had with Linkin Park. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Linkin Park, or to anyone in a band, or starting a band. They give you good tips to keep in mind if you are in a band and making music, and what to expect.
Long time fan.......2005-02-26
I've been a Linkin Park fan for probably about 6 years now and I'm amazed every time hear something new from them. The creativity and energy they put into each note, each measure of anything they put thier names on. That type of dedication is severely lacking in the music business today. I'm glad to say to say I'm a fan, without any hesistation or worries. I've read this book, 2 maybe three times and it's the kind of book you can go back to and get new views of the bands months or years after the initial read. It's a good job, well written and an easy read, not at all full of superflous language and unnecissary jargon. It proves they are a band of thier word, just average kids from SoCal, with nothing more in mind than making great music.
the perfect book from the perfect band.......2005-02-01
I just received this book in the mail and immediately read it cover to cover. The photographs are phenomenal! What was particularly moving for me (I no longer say amazing because the guys are so consistent with this) is the humility of the band members. In their interviews (both live and in this book) they are interesting as people, not just rock icons. I'm an older fan (43 years old) and a lot of people my age are surprised about my devotion to Linkin Park. It comes from listening to rock and roll for 30+ years and never hearing anything that comes close to the talent exhibited by this group. It is not just their individual talent, and they are all immensely talented individuals, but the synthesis of those individual talents into a sound that is unlike anything ever heard on this planet. Their music moves me in a spiritual way. Thank you Linkin Park so much for your music and this book!

Book Description
Telecommunications policy profoundly affects the economy and our everyday lives. Yet accounts of important telecommunications issues tend to be either superficial (and inaccurate) or mired in jargon and technical esoterica. In Digital Crossroads, Jonathan Nuechterlein and Philip Weiser offer a clear, balanced, and accessible analysis of competition policy issues in the telecommunications industry. After giving a big picture overview of the field, they present sharply reasoned analyses of the major technological, economic, and legal developments confronting communications policymakers in the twenty-first century.
Since the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, when Congress fundamentally reoriented the existing regulatory scheme, no book has cogently explained the intricacies of telecommunications competition policy in the Internet age for general readers, students, and practitioners alike. Digital Crossroads meets this need, focusing on the regulatory dimensions of competition in wireline and wireless telephone service; competition among rival platforms for broadband Internet service and video distribution; and the Internet's transformation of every aspect of the telecommunications industry, particularly through the emergence of "voice over Internet protocol" (VoIP). The authors explain not just the complicated legal issues governing the industry, but also the rapidly changing technological and economic context in which these issues arise. The book includes extensive endnotes and tables that cover relevant court decisions, FCC orders, and academic commentaries; a glossary of acronyms; a statutory addendum containing the most important provisions of federal telecommunications law; and two appendixes with information on more specialized topics. Supplementary materials for students are available at http://spot.colorado.edu/~weiserpj.
Customer Reviews:
Good.......2006-03-03
I had to read this for a graduate class. It is written in a conversational manner. It does explain the topics in reasonable voice. Overall not a bad purchase. It is not something that I will keep but it is good for a library to have.
Telecommunications for non-specialists.......2005-08-30
In Digital Crossroads, the authors, both lawyers with experience in telecommunications, offer a readable guide to the complex regulatory policies shaping electronic communication. Starting with the economic principles that have guided government agencies through the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, they give a basic history of the development of wireline communication, primarily through telephone, and explain how the advent of wireless technology via radio, television, cell phones, and the Internet have affected policies and practices. Although it is not easy reading, both the technical and legal aspects of communication are made clear even to a reader who is neither a lawyer nor an engineer. The policies discussed in this book will affect every citizen who cares about obtaining and communicating information to individuals and groups. Understanding the background given here, will help individuals follow the current legislative news as Congress revises the 1996 Telecommunications Act. This is a book many community groups and activists should read and discuss.
That rare combination: comprehensive and accessible.......2005-05-23
Digital Crossroads is that rare combination, a comprehensive and accurate -- but well-written and accessible -- presentation of the state of the technology, economics, and law driving today's complex telecommunications industry. I used it in my Albany Law School seminar on Telecommunications Law for the 21st Century, and students found it highly accessible--especially the technology chapters. The book is a real accomplishment: comprehensive, thoughtful, and forward-looking, without being swept away by the latest gimmick off the shelf. It is also an extremely well written and organized book, clear and authoritative. In addition, for either the practitioner or academic, the inclusion of relevant sections of the 1996 Telecommunications Act adds value and convenience. Making coherent sense of this industry, its history and trajectory, is a daunting challenge and one the authors met, apparently without flinching.
Telecom Law for the Layman, Clearly Explained.......2005-03-26
If you need a current understanding of the law and politics around telecommunications today, this is THE book you need. While long, it is clearly written, concise, lucid, and technically excellent. Even with extensive experience in this domain, I found this book to be the most cogent and readable summary of the issues today, and I learned a lot in the process.
Jonathan Nuechterlein and Philip Weiser are practicing lawyers that have taken the time to learn enough of the engineering and technology of the telecommunications world to be able to explain the intersection of law, politics, and technology to anyone with an interest in the topic. Their goal with this book is to lay a foundation for revisions to US (and global) laws as they apply to voice, data, and video communications distribution networks. While they do not have the answers yet (no one does), they lucidly and often humorously explain why today's laws and regulations are increasingly obsolete. In the process, the authors describe how technology and software are interacting to force the government to abolish the regulatory divisions between the voice and video worlds.
Nuechterlein and Weiser outline a four layer model for communications policies of the future, dividing the domain into 1) the physical infrastructure layer, 2) a logical connectivity layer, 3) an applications layer delivering voice, video, and data services to end users, and 4) a content layer that addresses publicly visible content in any format. They illustrate how this model can be used to devise laws that can effectively achieve the goals of government, and, more importantly, how the model can demonstrate the weaknesses of existing and proposed laws and rules. As they do this, they outline the thinking from the best minds in this domain as to the direction that Congress and the FCC should take in the process of revising our laws on the Internet, traditional voice telephony, VoIP, satellite communications systems, cable TV and the broadcast TV industry.
For this reason and others, I highly recommend this to anyone needing to understand the current regulatory environment surrounding the Internet and telecommunications generally. You will not go wrong with this volume.
Book Description
MEDIA OWNERSHIP AND DEMOCRACY IN THE DIGITAL INFORMATION AGE combines a detailed review of First Amendment jurisprudence with rigorous economic analysis to demonstrate the continuing need for structural limits on media ownership to promote democratic discourse. Among the key findings:
· Economic forces in mass media markets result in the undersupply of diverse sources of information, inadequate production of investigative "watch dog" news and the exercise of market power by media owners.
· Increasing commercialism, concentration, consolidation and conglomeration undermine the ability of newspapers, television and the Internet to promote the robust exchange of views on which a vibrant democracy depends.
· Each medium produces a separate product based on a different stream of resources that is used by the public in different ways to meet different needs.
· The Internet has not dramatically altered sources of news and information.
· In spite of the growth of national entertainment outlets, markets for local news and information are highly concentrated by traditional antitrust standards.
· Previous decisions to relax ownership limits on broadcast television, radio stations, prime time programming and cable TV systems resulted in swift increases in concentration and loss of diversity.
Criticizing the proposal by the Federal Communications Commission to virtually eliminate current rules limiting ownership, the book uses a rigorous quantitative approach based on First Amendment policy to propose media merger standards that promote the "widest possible dissemination of information from diverse and antagonistic sources" as well as vigorously competitive media markets.

Book Description
Traditionally, the Netherlands has enjoyed status as a test market for new media. But in the past decade, such innovations have been severely hampered by questions about the future of public broadcasting. This issue has led to abundant political grandstanding, but little in the way of definitive policymaking. In February 2005, the Scientific Council for Government Policy published a report with practical policy suggestions. Media Policy for the Digital Age summarizes the Council’s recommendations, giving readers outside the Netherlands insight into the issues at stake and possible solutions, as well as a concise analysis that tackles the challenges of making robust media policy for the twenty-first century.

Book Description
Digital Diplomacy provides a comprehensive overview of the major milestones in United States international communications and information policy, from the early days of the Morse telegraph to the current internet explosion. The book underlines the growing importance of the communications issues, particularly as they affect American leadership in a rapidly-changing information environment. Dizard, a former foreign service officer, rejects the idea of a computer-based "telediplomacy," arguing instead that the new technologies should be used primarily to strengthen the capabilities of American diplomats in dealling with information-age issues. A read for those interested in the future of United States foreign policy, and a stimulating overview for scholars, researchers, and students involved in the subject.

This digital document is an article from American Journalism Review, published by University of Maryland on January 1, 1994. The length of the article is 5577 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. From the supplier: Print media is attempting to define its role in a world where multimedia technology is rapidly growing in popularity. Viacom, US West and Time Warner Cable, which are testing out projects in Castro Valley, CA, Omaha, NE, and Orlando, FL, respectively, are among the companies trying to integrate news information and online services in an effective manner. These projects are not yet commercially viable and what is available now is extremely basic technology. However, these projects are encouraging because their premise is that news will never be irrelevant and that though the form may change the information will still be valid.
