Book Description
"I never liked jazz music because jazz music doesn't resolve. . . . I used to not like God because God didn't resolve. But that was before any of this happened." In Donald Miller's early years, he was vaguely familiar with a distant God. But when he came to know Jesus Christ, he pursued the Christian life with great zeal. Within a few years he had a successful ministry that ultimately left him feeling empty, burned out, and, once again, far away from God. In this intimate, soul-searching account, Miller describes his remarkable journey back to a culturally relevant, infinitely loving God.
Customer Reviews:
Captivating writing; thought provoking content.......2007-10-25
The author's writing style is incredible. His gift for metaphor makes the entire read enjoyable, while his thoughts and observations challenge traditional, modern Christian thinking. A great book for opening up dialogue for ministry in our postmodern era.
Excellent.......2007-10-22
This is a very good book that was recommended to me and I recommend it to others.
Love that Schama!.......2007-10-18
Just as fun as the PBS series! Has more information than the series too.
Good, but hypocrytical . . ........2007-10-11
As a Christian who frequently finds sustaining spirutuality in more resources than just the bible, I enjoyed this book some of the time.
Miller is dead on in his assertion that "the Church" and from that really all Christians, need to re-connect with the example of Christ's love, especially with regards to those whom Christians don't mingle with on a daily basis (at least my "daily basis" anyway).
His hypocrisy ruins it for me, though. It seemed like every time things were warming up about "loving others", Miller would drop some hugely critical comment about Republicans, fundamentalists, evangelicals, etc. I get it that these people aren't necessarily his cup of tea. However, if we are to accept, and adopt, Christ's example of love, it's all inclusive.
Loving only the less fortunate doesn't count; Christ loves all of us. And if Miller is going to write with integrity about emulating and expanding that love in our own lives, he can't pick and choose whom to love and not to love. In short, he falls in to the very trap he accuses "the Church" of living in.
And the hypocrisy of that makes it difficult to take his message seriously, at least for me.
With all that said, I am sending a copy of the book to an atheistic friend. You never know!
Miller's faith perspective rings true.......2007-10-10
Get Real: a spiritual journey for men
Blue Like Jazz is a beautifully written book that requires the reader to think honestly about issues of faith. Miller has moved well beyond the posturing and pretense that characterize too much of Christian apologetics. It's impossible to read Miller without being struck by his disarming candor and honest self-examination. Rather than introduce doubt, Miller makes sense, and he makes a strong case for a Jesus who is real and interactive in the world today. Like journalist Derek Maul's "Get Real: a spiritual journey for men," (2007) Blue like Jazz presents the Gospel as engaging, incisive, and deeply authentic.

Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-01-11
I had the pleasure of having the author as an instructor in graduate school and all I can say is WOW!!! The book provided so much information and it should be a must read in high school health classes.
Great read..........2003-09-05
This book is so fun! My boyfriend and I got it from the library. It wasn't necessarily the safe sex part that interested us (as we're completely monogomous), but more the fun and upbeat way in which practical sex tips are conveyed. I read it cover to cover in one night... and even learned a few things! Now my boyfriend is reading it. I can tell already that this book has helped to rekindle a bit of the sexy flame in our 2.5 year relationship. Definitely pick this book up!
Hip & Hot!!!.......2003-09-04
Very hip, very hot, and very helpful! I just finished reading this amazing book! It answers a lot of the questions that I didn't even know I had! It's very inspiring and gave me a ton of new ideas. It's part textbook, part novel, and 100% good! It's also written in a manner that keeps my attention. If you are young, hip, hot, and want to review the basics of safe sexuality and learn new ideas in the process this is a great read!!! I can't wait for the next book!
Guys, Take A Look.......2003-08-17
I picked up the book after seeing it on my girlfriends coffee table and I couldn't put it down. The author doesn't get overly scientific and she knows what she's talking about. Finally, someone offers an understandable and accurate description of how the "g-spot" works. The chapter on drugs and sex was incredibly informative as well.
I highly recommend this book to any guy interested in receiving rave reviews from his partner, whether she's your long-term girlfriend or a one-night rendezvous.
Guide to Sex for the 21st Century.......2003-08-17
The "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex" for the 21st century, this book is an owner's manual for the sexually active young adult. The author offers a voguish and responsible perspective on a variety of topics ranging from fantasy and masturbation, to multiple male orgasms, to the effects that various drugs have on sexual health and performance.
This book is sure to enhance the sexual health, appetite and experiences of anyone who reads it. It is easy to see why Ms. Fulbright is fast becoming the voice of sexual health and education for Generation Y.

Very Funnny!.......2006-05-03
I bought When you're Hot, You're Hot and loved it!!!
Made me laugh a lot!
The hilarious side of Menopause-if one exists?.......2003-12-18
Reading Jan Kingýs, When Youýre Hot Youýre Hot How I Laughed My Way Through Menopause, is a little like watching some of the well- known female comedians such as Margaret Cho, Rosanne, Bette Midler, Carol Leifer, Bonnie Hammer, Dawn French or Ellen Degeneres parade on stage and perform their various shticks.
Only this time the shtick is about menopause performed by King, who asserts, ýIým officially out of the egg business.ý
King is a former high school biology teacher turned author who tackles the subject matter of menopause with a great deal of wit and humor. The facts are all there, however it is the way they are presented that makes them memorable, and very often hilarious.
According to King the term menopause is derived from the Latin- Meno=ýmaný and Pause-ýterminate.ý In other words it all boils down to the literal translation, ýyou are the weakest link-good-bye!ý King goes onto explain that as the woman can no longer become pregnant, men now become useless. As a result, the womanýs sexual interest in men comes to a ýscreeching halt.ý There are two remaining functions for these men, lawn maintenance and auto repair.
King definitely has seen the light when it comes to menopause related topics, and without holding anything back, she tells it like it is while at the same time keeping her readers in stitches.
King has authored 23 humor books for women and six have even been translated into 8 languages. I guess there is something to be said about womenýs humor that seems to be universal.
The topics dealt with in the book run the gamut from the malfunctioning of womenýs thermostats to various kinds of cosmetic surgeries, different kinds of female medical examinations, sexual satisfaction (King describes hers after menopause-my libido ended up in limbo), relationships with men, even male menopause, if there is such an animal.
King is breast cancer survivor, and she also includes many thoughtful insights sprinkled with humor pertaining to this dreadful disease. Her assertion at the end of the book that nobody appreciates his or her life more than a cancer survivor is probably the impetus that makes Kingýs writing so verbally comical that is constantly tickling our funny bones.
The cumulative effect of the book is optimistic or at least somewhat calming and balanced, and will even provide some answers to such questions as- is there life during and after menopause?

When You're Hot You're Hot.......2002-04-11
Hysterical! Truely an enjoyable voice regarding an unenjoyable time in a woman's life. I could relate to Jan and laugh with other women in the world. She brings us together with humor and love. A real gift!
Laugh, Cry and Learn.......2002-04-10
With such a large population of baby boomers now in their menopausal years, Jan King's book is very timely. As I read this book I was able to laugh with her about what I have, and am going through. I also learned more about the whys of what is happening to me. The author's courage to reveal things that she has gone through with her illness was very educational, as well as a reminder to get to know and be aware of changes in your own body. Every man and woman, regardless of their age should read this book so as to better understand what their friends and relatives are living through...
It is a real eye opener to remind us of how precious life is.
Don't miss reading this book....it is the best book yet that this author has written!!!!!
Love women who laugh at themselves.......2002-04-08
This is hilarious. Women laughing at ourselves --- creates a sense of comraderie that makes this stage almost enjoyable. The author is warm, witty and honest! Boy could I relate to those anecdotes.
