I bought this to get me started on my new instrument. I play guitar but am troubled by the weight. Still wanting to play music, I opted for the clarinet. This book and its dvd/cd helps make the process of learning easy and fun. The lessons are paced well and new notes are introduced progressively and sequentially. A great starter book for amatuers or beginners that can be used to get anyone well on their way. I recommend it fully.

          Book Description

Modern sport has become a global phenomenon. Major sporting events like the Olympics and World Cup are organized on a global scale and watched by millions throughout the world. But the impact of sport is global in other ways too, as it affects political relations, national prestige, and policies on education and health. Contrasts between sports across different societies have diminished, yet a growing diversity of sports cultures are available to people of different nations. In his major new work, Joseph Maguire develops a path-breaking account of sport in a global context, examining the changing nature of sport in relation to globalization. He develops an original theoretical perspective on sport and globalization, drawing on the work of Elias and others to develop a five-stage model of the emergence and global diffusion of modern sport.Global Sport draws on a range of international case studies - from Britain, Australia, and North America - on elite labour migration, media sport, sports industry and the environment, sport, politics and national identity. Maguire analyses the existing balance of power in the global sport process, and highlights the dynamics which will power its future. This book will appeal to second- and third-year undergraduates and postgraduates in sociology, media and cultural studies, social history and geography, and to students on courses on sport and leisure at Higher Education colleges and universities.

"With stunning, eloquent, and insightful essays Latino/a Popular Culture offers the best guide to the cultural production of the largest group of people of color in the United States. The essays broaden both our knowledge of Latino/a cultural production and challenge the traditional paradigms of cultural and ethnic studies doing so through accessible, historically informed approaches."
            —Mary Pat Brady, Cornell University

"Latino/a Popular Culture greatly contributes to the genres of both cultural studies and Latino studies. The editors exhort undergraduate and graduate students to continue looking at Latino/a popular coluture as "as site of invention, critique and pleasure" (p.16) since much work still needs to be done in this area."
            —Harvard Educational Review

"The book provides an insight into the current struggles that Latinos who live in the norhern hemisphere face."
            —MELUS

Latinos have become the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. While the presence of Latinos and Latinas in mainstream news and in popular culture in the United States buttresses the much-heralded Latin Explosion, the images themselves are often contradictory.

In Latino/a Popular Culture, Habell-Pallán and Romero have brought together scholars from the humanities and social sciences to analyze representations of Latinidad in a diversity of genres - media, culture, music, film, theatre, art, and sports - that are emerging across the nation in relation to Chicanas, Chicanos, mestizos, Puerto Ricans, Caribbeans, Central Americans and South Americans, and Latinos in Canada.

Contributors include Adrian Burgos, Jr., Luz Calvo, Arlene Dávila, Melissa A. Fitch, Michelle Habell-Pallán, Tanya Katerí Hernández, Josh Kun, Frances Negron-Muntaner, William A. Nericcio, Raquel Z. Rivera, Ana Patricia Rodríguez, Gregory Rodriguez, Mary Romero, Alberto Sandoval-Sánchez, Christopher A. Shinn, Deborah R. Vargas, and Juan Velasco.

                      Book Description

Learn the value of football to American society

No sport reflects the American value system like football. Visitors to the United States need only watch a game or two to learn all they need to know about the American way of life and the beliefs, attitudes, and concerns of American society. Football and American Identity examines the social conditions and cultural implications found in the football subculture, represented by core values such as competition, conflict, diversity, power, economic success, fair play, liberty, and patriotism. This unique book goes beyond the standard fare on football strategy and history, or the biographies of famous players and coaches, to analyze the reasons why the game is the essence of the American spirit.

Author Gerhard Falk, Professor of Sociology at the State University College of New York at Buffalo, examines football as a game, as a business, and as a reflection of the diversity in American life. Football and American Identity also addresses the relationship between football and the media, with much of the game's income generated by advertising and endorsements, and examines the presence of crime in football culture. The book discusses the development of the game—and those involved in it—at the Pop Warner, college, and professional levels, examining the social origin of players, coaches, cheerleaders, and owners. In addition, Football and American Identity analyzes the game's fans and their devotion to "their" teams, examines why Pennsylvania is considered the "mother" of American football, and looks at the National Football League and its commissioners.

                      Football and American Identity examines:

how individualism and achievement can lead to mythological status

why a person's occupation is the most important indicator of prestige in the United States

what the consequences are of earning more in a year than most Americans make in a lifetime

why equality is vital to the ethnic make-up of American football teams

why teamwork is important-in football and in industry

how freedom is essential for taking the risks necessary for success

                        Book Description

The game of football has undergone massive changes in the past few decades. The creation of the F.A. Premier League, the influx of television revenue, the commercialization of the game, and the growth in the numbers of foreign players have all left their mark. One area that has attracted increasing interest in the media and amongst the pages of football magazines is the issue of race and racism in football. But until now, the complexities of the situation have often been neglected in the midst of moral activism. Why has football become such an important arena for the expression of racist and xenophobic attitudes? How are racial and ethnic identities constructed and re-constructed in everyday social interactions and ritual gatherings? This highly readable and accessible book provides the first systematic and empirically grounded account of the role of race, nation and identity within contemporary football cultures. Focused around the four clubs on which the authors did their research, the book shows how different clubs understand and experience race in different ways. Looking at football at a national level, the authors trace the history of racism and its impact on the contemporary game. The emphasis throughout is on the changing role of racial and ethnic identity in football over the years. This book draws on research conducted at the height of campaigning activity within the game, as well as on contemporary scholarship about racism and sport. It will be essential reading for anyone interested in football, sport, race and ethnic studies.

                          Book Description

Body Cultures explores the relationship between the body, sport and landscape. This book presents the first critically edited collection of Henning Eichberg's seven provocative essays into "body culture". Eichberg, a well-known scholar in continental Europe who draws upon the ideas of Elias, Focault, Habermas and others, is now attracting considerable interest from sociologists, historians and geographers. This collection has been extensively edited to highlight Eichberg's most important arguments and themes. The editors focus particularly on Eichberg's provocative claims about the notion of space: from the micro-scale of how human bodies "express" themselves or are formally "disciplined" through their movements in space, to the macro-scale of how bodies and cultures are invented and contested in connection with the self- identities they come to possess in given locations. Introductory essays provide clear explanations and interpretations as well as a biography of Eichberg.

4 out of 5 stars If football is about enjoyment, the FA got it wrong!.......1998-12-09

If you never believed that 90's football was about enjoyment of the masses and had a sneeking suspecion that it had more to do with business then this is the book for you! It neatly dismisses all those long forgotten myths that football is for the fans and replaces it with the notion that football is about the business ethos. It takes a look at power, control and the men in grey suites who are determined to take the game away from the true fans and place it in the hands of the only people who can afford the ticket prices! It also serves the excellent perpous of confirming the fans view of their identity and where it comes from. This will make all football fans realise that you don't have to be a Nick Hornby to care . . . but it helps! If you are one of the few who still care and want to know a bit more about how they are dirtying the beautiful game, get a copy now!

                          Book Description

Reinterpreting the roots of twentieth-century American labor law and politics, Ruth O'Brien argues that it was not New Deal Democrats but rather Republicans of an earlier era who developed the fundamental principles underlying modern labor policy. By examining a series of judicial rulings from the first three decades of the century, she demonstrates that the emphasis on establishing the procedural rights of workers that is usually associated with the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 actually emerged over a decade earlier, in the Republican-formulated labor legislation of the 1920s.

O'Brien's findings underscore a paradox within the foundation of labor policy and the development of liberalism in the United States. The leaders of the liberal state created a strict regulatory framework for organized labor only after realizing that the mainstream labor movement's capacity for collective power threatened to undermine individualism and classlessness in American society. In other words, O'Brien argues, the individualism that accounts for the overall weakness of the liberal state also produced America's statist labor policy.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting new perspective on a familiar topic.......2000-08-11

O'Brien has written a well researched work that brings a new perspective to a familiar chapter in labor history. Her findings suggest that a paradox exists within the foundation of labor policy and the development of liberalism in this country, and that the principles of labor history associated with the National Relations Act of 1935 actually emerged over a decade earlier in the 1920s. This is a well written book that should be included in the library of anyone interested in labor history and the politics of the 1920s and 1930s.
