    Book Description

Although he is a product of Islamic culture, Mohammed Arkoun nonetheless disagrees with the Islamic establishment and militant Islamist groups. A student of twentieth-century social science in the West and an admirer of liberalism, he self-consciously distances himself from Western Orientalists and Western conceptions of liberalism. This book-the first of Arkoun's works to be widely available in English-presents his answers to twenty-four deceptively simple questions about Islam. Taken together, the author's responses provide an introduction to one of the world's great religions and offers a biting, radical critique of Islamology as it has been practiced in both East and West.

    4 out of 5 stars A post-modern interpretation of Islam.......2003-06-12

In the context of a new reassertion and emergence of anti-intellectual fundamentalist groups within the fringes of Islamic thought who detest archival research and historical interpretation of Islam, Mouhammed Arkoun's contribution in seeking a new interpretation of Islam is a great achievement. Western orientalists and media-establishments have projected a badly tarnished image of Islam, essentially for their own objectives of demeaning and subjugating underdeveloped societies of the Islamic world. Powerful western governments have created a dangerous "other" in the form of Islam, which would destroy such universalist western values as democracy, liberalism and individualism. In fact, Islam is not a monolithic religion; rather it is a remarkable mosaic of diverse interpretations. Islamic societies do not comprise a unified system to pose a military, economic, political or even ideological threat to the west. So the need of the hour is to understand Islam in its totality both by the West and the Muslims themselves to seek a solution thata is not based on a zero-sum outcome. Arkoun's ideas precisely fill this need. Muslims need a rethinking of their faith, based on rationality and reason not on dogma, in order to create a progressive, modern Islamic world.

4 out of 5 stars Simple yet academic.......2000-02-22

I believe this book is an excellent resource for anyone either familiar or unfamiliar with the discourse of Islam and its basic tenets. What makes it special is the 'fresh' and 'scientific' approach that Arkoun seeks to encourage for the study of Islam. As the book prgresses not only does the reader learn about Islam but is also forced to rethink their existing notions. Arkoun however suggests no solutions to the ills that he finds in Islamic thought. The best he can do is suggest his methodology and express full confidence that if followed, his suggested 'scientific' approach will lead to great conclusions from Muslim thinkers. In this sense the reader is left hanging. However, most modern dilemmas often cannot be solved in one big swoop and it would be somewhat unfair for us to expect that Arkoun should in one book, not only explain Islam, identify contentious issues and provide new methodologies but on top of that present new solutions as well. I think Arkoun still deserves credit for all that he still accomplishes within this book.

2 out of 5 stars We have to re-thingking the concept of the religion.......1999-06-14

The Religion as the social concept and Transendental one, is probably discussed in the future. The Discussion is prefer use many disciplines and methodes, becaouse by this one, the re-thingking of the religion, especially Islam in this case, is merely quite right. Arkoun, although He was not the first man who preparing this concept of re-discus of religion, but He Was Gave the New paradigm of methodology.

      Book Description

Although most history books cite Brown v Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas as the litigation that ended school segregation, a little-known case from Clarendon County, South Carolina actually spearheaded the civil rights movement.

In 1954, Briggs v Elliott had little immediate impact on daily life in public schools for African Americans. But in its symbolic, unanimous decision, the U.S. Supreme Court put segregationists on the defensive. The law was finally on the side of those who wanted to make the guarantee of equal treatment in the Fourteenth Amendment a reality.

Now - on the 50th anniversary of the case - join us to revisit the Briggs v Elliott decision by exploring the uncommon courage of the residents of Clarendon County who sacrificed so much. In this stunning pictorial history, we will visit with the people who brought this case to life and changed history.

5 out of 5 stars So Who Is This Rumpole Person, Anyway?.......2004-12-15

I remember these being done as wonderful 30 minute plays by the BBC, starring Roy Dotrice as Albert Whitlock, and Alistair Sim as the Stipendary Magistrate Mr Swallow. Apart from a lovely byplay between these two, the humour that laced each case had me laughing so much my ribs were aching!

I immediately sought out the stories themselves, and although they were somewhat shorter, loved each and every volume of those as well. It's been a long, long time since then - over a quarter of a century - and so I was delighted to find these "Misleading Cases" available again in a two volume collected set.

Although some of the laws of England brought to light in these cases are likely to have changed, the wit and humour is something I look forward to renewing my acquaintence with.

                                Book Description

Why, in the recent campaigns for universal health care, did organized labor maintain its support of employer-mandated insurance? Did labor's weakened condition prevent it from endorsing national health insurance? Marie Gottschalk demonstrates here that the unions' surprising stance was a consequence of the peculiarly private nature of social policy in the United States. Her book combines a much-needed account of labor's important role in determining health care policy with a bold and incisive analysis of the American welfare state.

Gottschalk stresses that, in the United States, the social welfare system is anchored in the private sector but backed by government policy. As a result, the private sector is a key political battlefield where business, labor, the state, and employees hotly contest matters such as health care. She maintains that the shadow welfare state of job-based benefits shaped the manner in which labor defined its policy interests and strategies. As evidence, Gottschalk examines the influence of the Taft-Hartley health and welfare funds, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (E.R.I.S.A.), and experience-rated health insurance, showing how they constrained labor from supporting universal health care.

Labor, Gottschalk asserts, missed an important opportunity to develop a broader progressive agenda. She challenges the movement to establish a position on health care that addresses the growing ranks of Americans without insurance, the restructuring of the U.S. economy, and the political travails of the unions themselves.
