Book Description

This is the highly-anticipated, full version of the Analysis of Book 5—analogous in format to the first guide, analyzing books 1 through 4, but covering only Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Readers can use this guide as a refresher course on how to search for clues when they read Book 6, and to answer their questions about Book 5. It offers insights into the clues, as well as speculations into the motivations of the characters and their magical world, which functions so differently from our own. The authors also go on record with their theories so that the fans can have fun debating whether they were right or wrong!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good.......2007-06-25

I absolutely loved Galadriel's guide to Books 1-4, and this one does have all the same imformation, but the format change does make it a muddier read. In the first guidebook she would site a passage (with page number) and then discuss it in a seperated section. Now she has combined the two without any page numbers and in more of a 'free form' style.
It's still a quality guide, just harder to get through.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas and insight!.......2006-08-26

Because I enjoyed the guide for books 1-4, I had to get this guide as well. It didn't disappoint. I enjoyed their writings, their fresh ideas, and their predictions for the next book. Though I didn't always agree with things being said, they did give me ideas on which to think about. Interestingly enough, I found that my thinking is right on target with these Harry Potter sleuths. I can hardly wait for their guide on Book 6. Maybe it will be out before Book 7 is finally released.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing Hints and Questions about Order of the Phoenix.......2006-03-10

This is Galadriel Waters and friends' take on the FIFTH book--not the most recent entry--in the Harry Potter series. Unlike the first volume, which analyzed the first four books by raising questions and then answering them, this one provides few answers--but plenty of provocative questions. There are frequent references to another JK Rowling book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and I suggest you have it with you as you read.

Each chapter is analyzed in light of things that have happened earlier (in the first four books as well as this one). Wordplay is one of the main "clues" Waters investigates; she's certainly found puns and anagrams that I had overlooked, although I think at times she may be seeing word clues that aren't really there. Nonetheless, she has obviously put a great deal of hard work into this area of the book. She also has some interesting hints on what may have been going on at 12 Grimmauld Place that the characters overlooked.

The last section, Book 6 and Beyond, was the most interesting to me. Here are analyses about the strategic positions at the end of Order of the Phoenix, discussions of possible character participation in the next book, Half-Blood Prince, as well as of the prophecy and Frequently Asked Questions.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun and Makes-You-Think Read.......2005-09-16

I am a fan of Ms. Water's books. My title "A fun and makes-you-think read" says exactly how I feel about her books, including this latest one. It is researched speculation. The idea is the speculations makes you think and come up with your own theories which may agree or disagree with the ideas presented in the book.
She comes up with ideas which would never even have occurred to me. That is what makes it fun. If you are a Harry Potter fan (even if you are over the recommended age of 9-12) this is a book for you. We need these books to get through the long waits between JKR's books and this latest one will occupy a lot of wait time. Thanks Ms. Waters

Book Description

Harry Potter's fans are down to waiting for the final volume in JK Rowling's epic mystery, and the fans at Wizarding World Press are no exception! We all want to know how it turns out, and if clues to the final solution have been sitting under all our noses in Book 6. Is Harry one of the people Rowling said would die? And if not—what else can happen to the boy wizard who's already lost his parents, his long-lost godfather, and his mentor? This is the Analysis of Book 6. It is basically the same as the first two guides but covering only Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The format is similar to the Analysis of Book 5. Many readers use these guides to help them try to guess how the series might end. They can use this one to refresh their memories of what has happened so far, as they reread Book 6. The guides look not only at the clues, but offer insights into both the motivations of the characters and the ways of the magical world, which functions differently than our own.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read for HP Fans..........2007-09-22

For those who are TRUE HP fans, this book is a great read. It's good to go through, even if you've already read "Deathly Hollows". There are still some unanswered questions and issues that this book covered, AND it has a lot of information here on all kinds of things - like the tarot imagery (hanged man, lightning-struck tower, etc.) in "Half-Blood Prince" and the other novels. Also, if you were a fan of the late great Madeleine L'Engle, you'll be floored by the ties between "Wrinkle in Time" and the Harry series these guys spotted. They even predicted that there would probably be somebody important kidnapped to force Harry's hand, just like in "Wrinkle", and of course there was.

Also, there were lots of fun finds, too. If, like me, you ever wondered how a kneazle might communicate... well, you need to read this book. They even spotted something that I completely missed. There's just tons of stuff! It gets kind of wild sometimes, but that's part of the fun.

I really like this guide series, it goes right along with the books and lets you think more about everything, it's almost like getting extra Harry books!

Unfortunately, this book got out just before "Deathly Hallows", which was a little bit of a disappointment, because I was really looking forward to having time to go through it all before "Hallows". But the research that went into it is just as amazing as the rest of their series. Like the previous guides, it has lots of definitions and backgrounds for words, plus other goodies that helped me appreciate Ms. Rowling's work even more.

The only suggestion I might make for any possible future editions is the addition of an alphabetical appendix, in order to find specific references in the analysis itself, to various characters, places, etc. There is so much in here, it's hard to sort through it all if you have a specific character or place you want to research.

3 out of 5 stars Bleh. Not spectacular........2007-09-07

I also have read all the other guides, and was really looking forward to this one. I don't know if it was Amazon, or the publisher, but the book came out a few weeks AFTER the 7th book. So there are tons of parts where I just skip over it. The details were starting to get very tedious. For example, they mention the part where Dumbledore is walking into the orphanage to see Tom Riddle for the first time. They note that the hallway has black and white tiles. Then they go off talking about chess, and pulling clues out of it. Now maybe because I already read the last book, I know that the orphanage just happened to have black and white tiles, and it is meaningless.
Like the previous reviewer said, they do not explain other parts enough. In fact, in one chapter, you are told that the answer to this particular clue is in the restricted section. No, actually, it is not. I have no idea what they are leading too, and there is no way to figure it out.
I just wish they would have spent less time picking apart every teeny, tiny thing, and concentrate on the bigger picture. It would have been so much better to read this book before the last book came out.

3 out of 5 stars a bit of a disappointment.......2007-08-18

Err. It's ok.
Typos abound & drive me crazy. Shouldn't true HP fans know how to spell "Ollivander"? Not to mention the countless other grammatical mistakes and "regular" English-language words misspelled.
I've read all their other guides, so was prepared for the casual, web-style grammar and word usage. But, after reading the other guides, I was still expecting some really thoughtful, deep insights into the book, and have so far been disappointed. Most of the time, they start leading the reader in a general direction and then leave us hanging, saying they want us to be able to "figure it out" for ourselves. But most of the time, that seems impossible. I have no idea what they're getting at & I've read & re-read all the HP books at least 10 times (Deathly Hallows three times). The authors touch on all sorts of theories, but just do a really poor job of expounding on them. I wish they would have chosen just a few interesting possible theories and gone all the way with them.
A big disappointment.

Book Description

The Ultimate Unofficial Guide to the Mysteries of Harry Potter: Books 1-4 shows would-be sleuths how to hunt for JK Rowling's clues in a fun-to-read manner. With this Guide in one hand and the Harry Potter books in the other, you'll read the series in a whole new light as you:

• uncover the detail with which Rowling has crafted her story and her world • delve below the surface to ferret out Rowling's sly clues

Not only will you be amazed at how deceptively Rowling's hidden those clues, you'll learn how to discover new ones on your own! There are questions in Books 1-4 Rowling still hasn't answered, even after Book 6! Do you know what they are?

The Ultimate Unofficial Guide to the Mysteries of Harry Potter is for you if:

• You're new to the series and want a leg up or • You've read all the books, but it's been a while.

Pull out your memories for another look and tighten your skills!

Do you know how to solve Snape's poison bottle puzzle in the room "through the trapdoor?" Did you know there are actually 2 solutions to that puzzle?

Do you know what Rowling told us in the first four books about the secrets Neville and Professor Snape hold? Do you understand exactly how Dumbledore's "Mirror of Erised" worked? (Rowling's said we'll see it again!) Are you aware that what Harry saw in the Mirror was not accurate?

Here's what the Guide says about spotting a clue: "In chapter 16 of Book 1, J.K. Rowling writes that Harry 'watched an owl flutter toward the school across the bright blue sky, a note clamped in its mouth.' Even after reading the book several times, it still catches readers by surprise when they realize that this note was the message used to trick Headmaster Dumbledore into leaving the school for a trip to London. That clue doesn't help us solve the plot of the book and it was never explained or mentioned again, but when we then see a similar clue in Book 4, we need to pay much closer attention! Look for yourself - it's awesome!"

The Ultimate Unofficial Guide to the Mysteries of Harry Potter is best read alongside JK Rowling's books—not as a replacement! It does not give the plot away in advance, but there IS a spoiler warning because it discusses the endings of each of the books in chronological order.

No Harry Potter collection is complete without the Guide. Written by fans for fans, it is the perfect holiday gift for the Potter fan in your life—or yourself!

3 out of 5 stars Oh, the joys of analyzing!.......2007-01-10

Here's a great little book that carefully and fanatically considers every scrap of information in the first four Harry Potter books. It is made for the hard-core, obsessive fan, and I'm sure that they will love it. It's charmingly written as it analyzes information in a delightfully hard-core way. I originally purchased it back in the day, and even now I have a great time going back through it. Some of the ideas are admittedly funky, but the whole book opens us a fun new approach to the wild world of Potterholic fandom.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting read.......2006-08-26

I enjoyed this book very much. It gave great insight as to the meanings behind the writings of JK Rowling, and much to think about as far as the books go. Anybody who loves the Harry Potter books will enjoy reading this guide. Great entertainment while you wait for Book 7.

5 out of 5 stars Harry Potter 1-4 Notes.......2006-08-21

I thought that I had read books 1-4 thoroughly at least twice each, but after reading this hint book I need to go back and read them again. A lot of work went into this analysis. Harry Potter fans will find this an excellent book to accompany the series.

4 out of 5 stars Ultimate Unofficial Guide to the Mysteries of Harry Potter (Analysis of Books 1-4).......2006-07-10

I really liked it, it gave a lot of insight on what things may unfold in the books to come. I enjoyed the set up, everything was neatly organized, the Chapter-by-chapter analysis was pretty good, I would recommend this book to everyone, even though two more books have been released, it still is a great read.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2006-04-08

Although some of the "detectors" of mysteries were silly this book gives a lot of insight into the unknown relms of Harry Potter. It makes connections I wouldn't have noticed as many times as I have read the books. It's a great book to read!

Book Description

HP Sleuths are clever fans who know how to ferret out the clues J.K. Rowling has hidden in her septology, fans who revel in the quest of divining what is yet to come from those concealed mysteries.

HP Sleuths aren't quite ready to be told answers to the mysteries in J.K.R.'s fifth installment of the Harry Potter series -- but they do want to know if they are on the right track. This unusual book provides the hints and clues readers need to unravel these complex mysteries themselves. New Clues to Harry Potter: Book 5 is a "hints only" guide and is in a different format from our Ultimate Unofficial Guide. It includes lots of FAQs to explain some of the more complex events that occurred in Book 5. It also points HP Sleuths to the right sections so you know precisely where to look for all the mega clues we have spotted, and has a lot of big hints and tools that you need so you can start solving the mysteries. The HP Hintoscope, WWP Sleuthoscope and Rememberit Quill will all help too! But we won't be openly exposing all of the answers in this "New Clues" Guide. Includes:

• Special tools to investigate the mysteries in Book 5 • New Guide of Clues to Harry Potter • Cool reference materials to keep key clues fresh

HP Sleuths who are ready for the answers can find them in the new Ultimate Unofficial Guide to the Mysteries of Harry Potter (Analysis of Book 5), the full analysis released by Wizarding World Press before the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, in July of 2005. Get ready to pull out your memories and take a look—you'll be amazed at what there is to see!

3 out of 5 stars Lots of obsessed-fan fun.......2007-01-10

What makes this book sparkle is its flavorful tackle of Book #5. I originally bought this back in the day, when it was first published, and was pleasantly surprised; even now I still examine it every now and then for future ideas that might occur in the series' final installment. This book was written for those kinds of people, the crazy fans that want to over-analyze every little detail. It's great fun, folks.

The book is written in a close, personal, and gritty manner with the foremost objective of tackling information and secrets, and it does so most impressively. Someone was thinking when this was written, and it shows! Theories are discussed thoroughly, and impressively backed up with book/interview information.

While a lot of ideas presented should probably be taken with a grain of salt, it is this over-extention that makes this piece so awesome. This is a great little source for those just beginning the series, or those that just want to look back to re-analyze things. Heck, it's just fun.

5 out of 5 stars New Clues to Harry Potter Book 5.......2005-10-20

This one is a little harder to follow, but it is definately making me gop back and re-read book 5, there is so much that I missed the first 6 or so times!!

2 out of 5 stars If I were an English lit scholar...........2005-09-04

I might have enjoyed this book. As it was, the hints were too vague and arch (as in mischievous, saucy) for the non- philologists. I have gotten clearer explanations of esoteric references in HP out of reading the boards on the various web sites. Speaking of the boards, here's a link that will take you to a discussion of Galadriel and WWF on The Sugar Quill.

Galadiel Waters and her team have spent a great deal of time on this quest, but IMHO, the WWF books are for the Hermoines of the world who solve every problem by going to the library.

1 out of 5 stars not so good.......2005-07-23

really, if I had the time to research all the references and books the author mentions, I would write my own guide!! Not worth the effort unless you aspire to PhD in Philology...

5 out of 5 stars Holy Sleuthing, Batman, it's Harry Potter!!!!.......2005-07-15

A thoroughly enjoyable HP sleuth effort. I read the entire extant HP corpus 5 times last year (I AM NOT obsessed!) But this little gem made want to read OotP again. I missed many clues, apparently! This one goes into my permanent library for re-reading after the new HP 6 is read! WWP SCORES A PERFECT 10!

1 out of 5 stars Horrible RUBBISH.......2004-06-24

This is the worst Harry Potter "slueths" book ever. I would much rather read books that have to do with the legends behind the stories (ex. 'The Magical Worlds of Harry Potter') instead of this. let's get this straight...SNAPE IS NOT A VAMPIRE, and LUPIN IS NOT JAMES POTTER! this is reallllly stupid!

5 out of 5 stars This changed my life!!.......2004-02-02

I loved this book so much. I got it in the mail and couldn't put it down for three days straight. I learned so much about Harry Potter that I never knew existed, and now when I re-read the Harry Potter books, I'm able to pick out things that don't make sense, things that give us clues, and other tidbits that I wouldn't have been able to find without this book! I recommend any Harry Potter fan to read this. I learned so much and am thankful I got it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for all ages!.......2003-10-17

This is a fantastic book that will inspire any Harry Potter fan to start from the beginning and read again! Wonderfully written so that children and adults alike can understand and stay interested. A book you will not want to put down and that will quickly become a well used reference tool!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant- Perfect for Any Major Fan.......2003-09-14

What an awesome book! I loved it, it was so carefully written with tangible theories about concepts that you knew were there but weren't sure what they meant. There were one or two things, in hindsight (after Book 5) that I think they could have picked up on, but the things they did were amazing- many I had missed during the times I'd read the first four novels. It's incredible how many running bits there are- cabbage, 12- in the series, and that's all mentioned in here. Coincidences that were really meant to happen from the get-go, "insignificant" details you thought were unimportant were really keys to the plot- they have an awesome system they let you in on, four rules to picking up on clues. This is an insanely great piece of work, for any Potterhead. :) I'm definitely pre-ordering "New Clues", to accompany it.

5 out of 5 stars A Really Fun Read.......2003-09-14

This is definitely not for the casual Harry Potter fan, or someone who just watched the movies. This is for the obsessed HP fan who can't wait until Book #6 or the PoA movie next summer. It is an exhaustive chapter by chapter minute examination of almost every little detail in the first four books in the series. Because of this slavish devotion to details, it would be annoying and nit-picking to anyone who isn't totally into the whole HP phenonmenon. Even I thought several times the authors were really reaching trying to pick up clues or draw conclusions! However, more often than not, they found clues I had missed even after a half dozen (or more) reads of each book, and some of their conclusions, speculations, etc., were fascinating, or downright eerie with the great deal of sense they made. The authors further go out on a limb and predict what will happen in Book #5 (some of which they were pretty close or dead on)and even offer some possible scenarios to the ending of the whole septology (which I doubt they got right because I think we're all going to be shocked then)! Frankly, I can't wait until the follow-up guide to Book #5 is released in November to see what they've come up with next.

    Book Description

The "oligopoly problem"--the question of how prices are formed when the market contains only a few competitors--is one of the more persistent problems in the history of economic thought. In this book Xavier Vives applies a modern game-theoretic approach to develop a theory of oligopoly pricing.

Vives begins by relating classic contributions to the field--including those of Cournot, Bertrand, Edgeworth, Chamberlin, and Robinson--to modern game theory. In his discussion of basic game-theoretic tools and equilibrium, he pays particular attention to recent developments in the theory of supermodular games. The middle section of the book, an in-depth treatment of classic static models, provides specialized existence results, characterizations of equilibria, extensions to large markets, and an analysis of comparative statics with a view toward applied work. The final chapters examine commitment issues, entry, information transmission, and collusion using a variety of tools: two-stage games, the modeling of competition under asymmetric information and mechanism design theory, and the theory of repeated and dynamic games, including Markov perfect equilibrium and differential games.

Make sure your maths is good and you already know abit about oligopoly pricing. It is thorough, detailed, and pushes the boundaries, but takes some concentration to follow.

    Post graduate level I believe.

i liked this book but some bits were hard to understand.

4 out of 5 stars Deep... not Vast.......2001-11-16

This book is quite impressive in theoretical concept. This is appropriate for (really) very advanced undergrates, graduates with IO major (theoretical and analytical aspects) and researchers in IO. This book is absolutely not for introductory IO. The topics focus mainly on Quantity, Price, Spatial competition and Asymmetric Information. Tools used in the book are quite advanced. The good point of the book is strength in precise consideration of price discovery in oligopoly market. (how the price is formed, uniqueness and existence of the solution.) Other topics, e.g. advertising and entry, are not good stated here.

If you are looking for introductory text (advanced undergrates or graduate) in IO, see Tirole 1988. However if you are finding for the advanced books, see Handbook of IO (vol1 for pure theory, vol2 for empirical and extension ;esp. in international aspect of IO) and pick this one (if you are interested in Q, P and Spatialy concepts) also. Enjoy reading...

        Book Description

This book examines sequential coalition formation in oligopolies. Coalitions refer to mergers and acquisitions, cartels, and associations. The principal aim is the prediction and explanation of the coalition structure - whether an industry will emerge as a monopoly, say, or as a collection of sub-coalitions.

In environments where decisions to form coalitions are made sequentially, the prediction and explanation of the equilibrium coalition structure can differ dramatically from the textbook simultaneous-move model. This difference derives from the knowledge effect, which is unique to the sequential-move models.

          Description:
We investigate a dynamic oligopoly game where goods are differentiated and prices are sticky. We study the open-loop and the closed-loop memoryless Nash equilibrium, and show that the latter equilibrium entails a larger level of steady state production as compared to the former; both equilibria entail a larger level of production in steady state than the static game. We also study the effects of price stickiness and product differentiation upon the steady state equilibrium allocation and profits. The per-firm equilibrium output is increasing in both product differentiation and price stickiness, while profits are increasing in both product differentiation and the speed of price adjustment. The steady state social welfare monotonically increases in the speed of price adjustment, and the overproduction entailed by dynamic competition has beneficial effect from a social standpoint.

                    Description:
We consider an infinitely repeated oligopoly in which at each period firms not only serve the spot market by either competing in prices or quantities but also have the opportunity to trade forward contracts. Contrary to the pro-competitive results of finite-horizon models, we find that the possibility of forward trading allows firms to sustain collusive profits that otherwise would not be possible to achieve. The result holds both for price and quantity competition and follows because (collusive) contracting of future sales is more effective in deterring deviations from the collusive plan than inducing the previously identified pro-competitive effects.

I'm glad that you had to go to Penn to turn around and write a book about Penn State. If you are that obsessed with Penn state why didnt you save the 80,000 extra dollars you had to spend to get a degree from Penn and just go to PSU. There is a reason that everyeone who goes to PSU has great pride and it has the most active alumni in the world, because it is the best.
                    WE ARE PENNSTATE.

                    1 out of 5 stars What's the point?.......2006-04-01

What is the point of this book? Penn Staters could easily write, "I Hate Penn:304 Reasons Why You Should, Too."

Penn Staters certainly hate being confused with snooty-lousy-at-sports Penn just as much (if not more) as Penn grads.

The author pokes fun at PSU throughout the book but I'd take a wide open, large beautiful campus (even if it is in "the middle of nowhere") any day over Penn which is smacked into a few blocks of Philadelphia in the midst of traffic, noise, pollution, litter, etc.

My sister is a Penn grad and I did my master's at PSU. We couldn't care less. The author is a man that clearly is high on his Ivy education and has to make a point about it to everyone by declaring NOT PENN STATE! By the way, Penn doesn't even offer half of the programs Penn State does, including a degree in my profession.

Plus, Penn stinks at sports. What do you think Penn students are doing during Bowl Game Season? Writing books like this since they can't cheer on their team!

5 out of 5 stars PENN STATE SUCKS!!!!!!.......2003-11-10

PSU has always sucked. The campus is in the middle of no where, they act like Joe Pa is a God. This is a great read for the masses who know the truth. PENN STATE SUCKS!!!!!!

Why anyone would focus so much on a school of such credibility, history and integrity suggests a real jealousy. Through thick and thin... we are not swayed by football or sports rankings, because we know better. WE Are Penn State!
