Tolkien's eye.......2004-12-13

This is by far the most satisfying of all Tolkien calendars, because it is the most real and personal rendering of Middle Earth by any artist.

Alan Lee and others have done some good work, but this was Tolkien's world and these are his images. Sure, Orthanc is less severe in Tolkien's imagination than in Jackson's film, but Orthanc was never intended to be portrayed as an evil fortress? Originally built by Men of Gondor, Orthanc served as an impregnable fortress. In Sindarin, it means `Forked Height', in reference to the four pinnacles of `hard, glossy black stone, welded into a single tower five hundred feet high'". It was later deserted as the Dứnedain moved north, and Saruman - ever in need of feeding his ego - took up residence there. For those familiar only with the movies, this drawing might seem like a let down. I hope that I've squared this away somewhat. The movie overdid it.

I have always admired Tolkien, revered him with a sense of awe. He wrote a classic children's novel (The Hobbit) and another less well known children's book, Letters from Father Christmas (which he also illustrated). He wrote one of the most influential novels of the 20th century, The Lord of the Rings, which was not only a remarkable work of literature but spawned an entire genre (and, unfortunately, some rather poor imitators). Beyond that, he wrote remarkable poetry, much of which can be found in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and in The Lays of Beleriand. But wait - there's more. He wrote mythology. Mythology that is to me, at least, more interesting than any existing "real" mythology. I'm referencing The Silmarillion, of course. As if that isn't enough, Tolkien was an accomplished artist, an Oxford don, translated Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and held various chairs throughout his illustrious scholarly career. (Where in the world did he find the time to do all of this?)

As to the calendar, Rivendell's beauty is captivating; Lothlorien is as it should have appeared in the movie; Fangorn, with its dark, oppressing watercolors is frightening and foreboding, a forest one would be wise to avoid; Helm's deep, while less impressive as a work of art, is unique as it offered Tolkien a visual image from which to work while planning this massive battle; the leaves from the book of Mazarbul were perhaps my favorite inclusion, if for no other reason that it caused me to admire Tolkien even more; Minas Tirith, though unfinished, showed signs of grandeur; and the covers that Tolkien himself drew for the three books are better than any I have seen. The drawing for the Two Towers ends the debate of exactly which towers Tolkien was referring to in the title. He drew Minas Morgul and Orthanc. I think he's the expert on this.

Honestly, I'm not sure why The Brother's Hildebrandt bothered to put out a LOTR calendar. I'm sure it had to do with milking the 50th anniversary for all its worth, and that I haven't seen their names on anything of merit in years until the LOTR movies were being made, but their art doesn't come close to depicting the depths of Tolkien's work. They were best served as artists for The Sword of Shannara - which was derivative and shallow. If you're thinking about which calendar to buy, stop thinking right now. This is the real thing - the other is simply Parkay.

Tolkien's Own Vision.......2004-09-13

The 50th Anniversary of The Lord of the Rings' publication is being suitably celebrated with this 2005 Tolkien Calendar. All of the illustrations are by J.R.R. Tolkien himself, created while he was working on the book in the 1930s and 1940s. The illustrations have been published before, some in the first few Tolkien calendars in 1972 and 1973, others in Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien in the late 1970s, and all of them in Christina Scull and Wayne Hammond's classic J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator.

Tolkien was a gifted artist and draftsman. Even his doodles, like Shelob's Lair (drawn on a page of manuscript) in October, display a high degree of talent and precision. He was famously finicky about his drawings, insisting that each one should precisely mirror the story. (This led to his cropping some elements of some drawings, like March's Moria Gate, which displays both the full picture and the part that was trimmed off; and totally discarding others, like the abortive cityscape of Steinborg shown for September.) This perfectionism led to some absolutely beautiful productions. I am particularly fond of April's Lothlorien, showing the mallorns in full flower, and of February's view of Rivendell looking east: a tumbled landscape of stone, water, and trees.

Those who have become used to the artwork of others in previous Tolkien calendars, and those whose primary view of Middle earth was shaped by the Peter Jackson films, may be a bit put off by these drawings by Tolkien himself. July's Orthanc, for example, provides a rather modest view of Saruman's tower compared to that seen in the movie. Those of us who are true lovers of Middle earth, however, will find that these drawings are especially beautiful, regardless of any intrinsic aesthetic value, because they allow us to see Tolkien's own vision as it unfolded in his mind and flowed from his pen and brush.

A century after the publication of Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the "Spirit" of Capitalism, a major new work examines network-based organization, employee autonomy and post-Fordist horizontal work structures.

Why is the critique of capitalism so ineffective today? In this major work, the sociologists Eve Chiapello and Luc Boltanski suggest that we should be addressing the crisis of anticapitalist critique by exploring its very roots.

Via an unprecedented analysis of management texts which influenced the thinking of employers and contributed to reorganization of companies over the last decades, the authors trace the contours of a new spirit of capitalism. From the middle of the 1970s onwards, capitalism abandoned the hierarchical Fordist work structure and developed a new network-based form of organization which was founded on employee initiative and relative work autonomy, but at the cost of material and psychological security.

This new spirit of capitalism triumphed thanks to a remarkable recuperation of the "artistic critique"—that which, after May 1968, attacked the alienation of everyday life by capitalism and bureaucracy. At the same time, the "social critique" was disarmed by the appearance of neocapitalism and remained fixated on the old schemas of hierarchical production.

This book, remarkable for its scope and ambition, seeks to lay the basis for a revival of these two complementary critiques.

Errors abound.......2007-05-21

The study guide was kind of useful, but it often asked pointless questions about details with which we were completely unconcerned in my Intro Microeconomics class. Also, it often gave the wrong answers for multiple choice questions, resulting in such inaccurate assertions as "The statement that firms in competitive markets are price takers means that average cost equals marginal cost at the minimum of average cost." It contradicted the book as well, defining the long run average cost curve as the straight line running along the bottom of the short-run curves when in actuality such a curve is the minimum average cost curve, and it bizarrely defined the real product wage as the marginal product divided by the product price. This last error wasn't exactly a typo, because it appeared twice. I can only imagine how many microeconomics students this study guide has misled and confused.

Concise and Integrative.......2003-11-19

A very nice book , given by a famous Economist, is suitable for some aggresive students who are fearless to meet challenging. This book caould help you a lot. The examples focus on 97 Asia FC are crucial to form economic ideas.

very disappointing.......2007-09-28

In all honesty, I was rather disappointed with this one. The story is that of Jeanne, a survivor of the mass genocide in Rwanda in 1994. Now living with a foster family in Germany, Jeanne told her story to her new mother, who in turn put the words on paper. It's not that the story itself isn't good, because it is...what that poor child went through is inconceivable to most. I was interested in the story line, but the way it was narrated bothered me.

First of all, at the start of every chapter, the foster mother/author, Hanna Jansen writes a page or two. Usually some sort of anecdote, or a story of some sort. Which is all fine and good, but lady, I didn't buy the book to read what you think. Were you in Rwanda running for your life? Didn't think so. So shush and let the girl tell her story. It frustrated me.

My second complaint is the overall language used in the book. There's no way that those words came out of a teenagers mouth. Sorry, but it feels to me like Jansen edited and embellished where she saw fit. Maybe something got lost in the translation and its not Jansen's fault at all, I don't know. Regardless, it irriated me.

The book has so much potential. I was so excited to read it when I picked it up, but seriously folks, it was a disappointing one.

OVER A THOUSAND HILLS I WALK WITH YOU is the horrifying novel that is based on a true story about the 1994 Rwandan genocide. This was a subject that I didn't know too much about until I read this book, which made me realize how horrible events such as this one are still happening in today's society. How we could let this happen is beyond me.

The book is written by the adoptive mother of Jeanne to tell the story that is often called the modern day Holocaust. As with the original Holocaust, many children were left to fight for themselves and try and find a new way to survive. Jeanne's family is killed and she is left to fend for herself, and the book is about how she achieves that.

When you read this book you aren't on the basic level of thinking. You are much beyond that. The imagery in this book is not good, because in no way do you want this to happen to anyone, but at the same time it's very real. I felt as if I were standing the fields and forests and homes of these people and was surrounded by people fighting for their lives.

Touching Story.......2006-08-02

Hanna Jansen's OVER A THOUSAND HILLS I WALK WITH YOU is a touching tribute to her adopted daughter who was orphaned in the Rwandan war. Based on her daughter's recollections of her childhood--memories both pleasant and bittersweet--Jansen weaves a tale of sorrow, hope, fear, joy, and love. For example, the early chapters of the book feature a young girl living life large. She is visiting her grandmother. She's playing with her cousins. She's fighting with her sister and brother. Her mom works outside the home, her dad is away a lot...and she has an incredibly whiny sister that she struggles with on a daily basis. She's vibrant and unaware that her world would change in just a few short years. Later chapters reveal the pain, the loss, the confusion, the fear of not knowing if one is going to survive another day. Witnessing such atrocities as seeing your parents and siblings killed by strange soldiers. Seeking help from family friends, yet being turned away because they don't want to risk dying too. Her survival story is inspiring.

The story is beautifully told, Jansen has done a great job here. Her book is definitely worth reading.

I read this as my own parents aged. I loved every page and had some laugh out loud moments. It is breezy,light and poignant. I immediately bought another book by author and gave this one to my mother- who years ago knew the author but had never read any of her books. My mother in turn gave the book to her retirement center library.

Humor and Laughter Happens.......2006-08-03

Nardi Campion, a prolific NH writer, gives the aging process a light and humorous observation as she ages. On the other side of 65, I laughed my way through the book because I can relate to what Nardi tells us. She is enjoying her later years in a beautiful community, most familiar to a lot of people--Lebanon near the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital. Her abandonment of driving gave me ideas to apply to my mother-in-law who is 90. She is feisty and determined to do everything she can without help, if possible. The opportunities are endless when one way to do things no longer work. The episode of her hitchhiking was too much. Perfectly sane in that area of our state. She describes aging as the epitome of living. I highly recommend this book if aging is of concern. Marion E Cason, Reviewer

Kids love this!.......2006-11-21

I have a home daycare and this is the favorite book of my 4-8 year olds. They love to read it and have it read to them. It is easy to read but filled with new words like eerie and dreary. The pictures are fun and spooky but not scary. It is a simple book but has doors to open and gate to look through. Definately more popular than I expected.
