It amazes me that the songs contained in both books 1 and 2 by Robert J. Morgan's compilation were sung at our church when I was growing up. At that time I had no thoughts whatsoever as to who the authors or songwriters were. How refreshing that a busy pastor like Robert J. Morgan would be instrumental in bringing these happy memories back to worship services where Jesus Christ is praised. Realizing that even way back in the l6th, l7th, l8th, 19th and 20th centuries both men and women were inspired to tell the wonder of God's love and protection for his people if we were willing only to listen and obey.
Also, I was really surprised to find women as authors of America the Beautiful, The Battle Him of the Republic; To God Be the Glory and Because He Lives, I can face tomorrow.
I give these books to friends of mine as gifts because they two like the "olden" songs.

Morgan's writing is devotional in nature and his book makes you want to continue reading. Even if you weren't raised with hymns--you'll enjoy this book, if only for the incredible stories and powerful messages.
Fascinating, music history/devotional.......2007-01-04
I started using this with my kids as a nighttime devotional. I had to "translate" the stories into more-kid-friendly language, but they got a kick out of singing the songs after hearing how they came to be. Really, it is more of an adult book and if you grew up in a traditional Protestant church, you will really enjoy learning the background to so many famous hymns. It is very easy to use for a daily devotional since each story is only one page long.

These are very nice books for anyone who likes hymns and their history. Each hymn is printed on one page and looks very much as it does in a main-line church hymnal. On the facing page is a history of the composer, author of the words or both and story about the writing of the hymn. I recommend them for church goers, former church goers, choir members and ministers. The binding does not lend itself to sitting open on my piano rack, but I could alter that if I really wanted to play from the book. They are good books for picking up to read just a few pages at a time. Enjoyably informative.
More Hymn Stories to Know and Share.......2005-12-21
If you ever wanted to know the background behind the hymns that we sing, this two-volume collection is for you. Robert J. Morgan has collected and compiled stories of hymns from all over the world and from every time period. Each book takes a look at 150 hymns, so the sum total is 300 - certainly, most of the familiar hymns including your favorite hymns are included. And there are other hymns herein, that you would enjoy singing and reading about.
In Book II, there are stories about many hymn favorites, including: "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus", "The First Noel", "Break Thou the Bread of Life" and "Joy to the World!"
Both books would be very helpful to pastors planning worship-and indeed could be the springboard for any number of sermons, illustrations or hymn festivals.
But the usefulness does not stop there. These volumes are really a mini compendium of faith's response to God's wonders and blessings, and so, together, they are treasuries of devotional resources.

Presents Hymns & Carols in Historical & Theological Context.......2005-03-22
Robert Morgan has collected the stories of familiar hymns which transcend denominational boundaries. I sang many of these as a youth at Catholic Mass, and later, as I have regularly attended Protestant services. Not only did I enjoy reading the lyrics in the quiet of my living room, but I also learned more about the intended meaning of each song.

Christian hymns are part of world music, going back hundreds of years. Whether written by a repentant slave owner or a Catholic priest who believes scripture should be in the common man's language, or as an extension of a theologian's great poetic skill, the stories of the classics are anything but ordinary.
What impressed me was the easy style of Morgan's writing as he explained the theology and origin of the songs. Each song receives one page describing its author and history.
I learned, for example, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" by Ada Ruth Habershon isn't a secular song of generic faith sung only by folk singers, but a rich song of longing for eternity in Heaven specifically for Christians.
I like that Morgan included "Away in the Manger" and other Christmas carols. In the Christmas holiday context, they feel like simple ditties, but reading the lyrics showed me how many started as hymns sung throughout the year as worship.
A downside of the book was the organization. Morgan researched this carefully and grouped the hymns chronologically. Each song gets its own entry. In many cases, specific material was lacking, or, as in the case of the Wesley brothers, John and Charles, many were written by one author. There was only so much Wesley information to spread out over all of their songs. It would have made more senses to collection the songs of one author together, with one essay to avoid this problem.
"Then Sings My Soul" is aptly titled, referencing the famous lyric. It is as instructive as it is encouraging. For me, as I walked through memories new and old, I found that this coming Sunday as I sing these with my fellow parishioners, I will be singing with more soul than the Sunday before.
I fully recommend "Then Sings My Soul: 150 of the World's Greatest Hymn Stories" by Robert J. Morgan.

The conventional utility-based approach to microeconomics is now nearly a century old and although frequently criticized, it has yet to be replaced. On the Reappraisal of Microeconomics offers an alternative approach that overcomes most of the objections to orthodox theory, while offering some unique additional advantages.
The authors present a new approach to non-equilibrium microeconomics that applies equally to production, trade and consumption, and that is also consistent with the laws of thermodynamics. This new theory is not limited to equilibrium or near-equilibrium conditions. The core of the theory is proof that, for each agent (firm or individual), there exists an unique function of goods and money (denoted Z) that can be interpreted as subjective wealth for an individual or the owners of a firm. Exchanges may occur only when both parties enjoy an increase in subjective wealth as a consequence. On average, this Z-function will increase over time if, and only if, the agent obeys a simple decision rule in all economic transactions: namely to `avoid avoidable losses', or AAL, it being understood that some losses are unavoidable. Dynamic equations describing growth (or decline) can be derived simply by calculating time derivatives of a wealth function, without the need for constrained maximization of an integral of utility (or some surrogate) BM_1_over time. The Z-function also has a number of other interesting properties that can be used for multi-agent and multi-sectoral simulation models to explore a variety of economic situations that cannot be addressed so easily using conventional methods.
This is a stimulating, provocative and highly original book that will appeal to informed academics, researchers and other professionals with an interest in the fundamentals of neoclassical economics and its applications to business, finance, growth and the environment.

I am a Teacher Assistant and work with Special Need students. The Teacher and myself use tools in this book everyday. It offers fantastic ideas and strategies for the classroom, no matter what age group. I work with 7yr old to 12 yr olds. They all benefit from the activities in this book. It is a good idea to have it with you in the classroom and to use it spontaneously when an incident may arise. It is a very user fiendly book. I highly recommend it.

My main impression of this work by Becher is that it is far from to the point. The author strives towards assisting the reader in making their own decision, which as such is not a bad idea, but it results in the book missing an adequate structure. Time and time again the author gets lost in details, quotes, and footnotes, while the reader has no idea of the the bigger picture since that is not presented until much later. The practical application of the theme of the book (classification of academic disciplines - only twelve of them, by the way) does not come until the very end.
If I'd recommend this book it would be for the lack of something better. For those enjoying a good, clear, to-the-point and enjoyable-to-read textbook this one would not be the right choice.
Disciplinary content determines intellectual perspective!.......1999-04-18
In this creatively conceived and well documented study, Tony Becher explores the notion that the content of an academic discipline determines the kinds of perspectives which emerge from the study of the discipline. He found that this influence can be so pervasive as to shape social structures within disciplines and political and social relationships between disciplines. His work predates Teirney & Bensimone's observations regarding differential faculty socialization processes among disciplines, and directly support's David Kolb's findings regarding the relationship between learning style and academic content, and Anthony Biglan's findings (1973) regarding qualitative differences in the nature of academic work. After reading Academic Tribes and Territories I found it very difficult to ignore its implications for the study of student subcultures, the delivery of student services, and the assessment of educational outcomes. I strongly recommend this book to anybody considering the study of faculty or student subcultures in higher education. If Tinto's (1975) assertion that socialization is essential to persistance is valid, further research should reveal qualitiative differences in how students successfully socialize into the various academic disciplines. Academic Tribes and Territories provides refreshing insights into the subtle dynamics which underlie this process. It is a scholarly book, which takes the topic far beyond the insightful if ungrounded musings of Hazard Adams' entertaining work, The Academic Tribes (1976). Tony Becher has produced a gem. Read it!
