      Book Description

The materials collected in this volume all concern the translations of and receptions to Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations in ten non-English-speaking countries. The Wealth of Nations provides the perfect basis for studying the international transmission of economic ideas as it is generally considered to be the foundation of modern political economy, and still continues to be read after more than two centuries. Its appeal crosses national, cultural, and ideological boundaries -- countries investigated here range from China to Sweden -- and its enduring popularity is indicated by its status as the most translated economics book in history. Adam Smith Across Nations includes numerous sections which will of invaluable assistance to any Smith researcher. As well as presenting reviews and analysis from each country from the 18th century to the present day, an appendix lists editions of The Wealth of Nations in 18 languages, enabling the reader to understand the speed and number of translations. Most importantly, an introductory overview synthesises current research on the economic ideological context in the individual countries when The Wealth of Nations was introduced, the motives behind its introduction, its immediate reception, and the nature of the objections to Smith's doctrines. Professor Lai concludes that Smith's impact outside English-speaking country was predominantly limited to the realm of ideas: few of his policy recommendations were put into practice.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2001-01-23

It was great reading a book that finally addressed the cause of economics and capitalism. Economics is very fascinaing to me, and it interesting to see it applicable for the 18th century as well.

Adam Smith wrote the book the same year our great nation was established. The book was very intriguing and genuinely full of good, useful economics principles.

All in all, the book deserves a B+. I give it a strong B and not an A, only because of the wordage used. At times it was even above my intellect.

5 out of 5 stars Micromotives and Macrobehavior.......2007-08-09

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I have read it at least three times and learn something new each time. Schelling is not only a great economist but a great writer. He has a knack for making arcane concepts accessible. I highly recommend it. This book uses economic methodology to tackle "non-economic" concepts, such as segregation, sorting and mixing and cooperation.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Rule and Self-Restraint.......2006-11-23

Schelling's book covertly drafts a model of economic support for the Golden Rule. While many of his examples may be repetitive, ultimately, we learn that by restraining ourselves in various enterprises, such as energy conservation, we are able to produce overall benefits for society. However, the hitch is that without critical mass or some basis for keeping rebels in line, no one adheres to the collective system and therefore no one benefits. Thus, the author intelligently posits an argument that in properly regulated environments, cooperation and selflessness produce stability and will lead to long-term success.

What is more interesting are Schelling's numerous examples and asides about human behavior that, once examined carefully, yield a greater understanding about everyday phenomena. For example, he writes, "Most people think that inflation reduces purchasing power without stopping to notice that their own pay increases are somebody else's inflation, and at least some of it must cancel out." This book is filled with such astute and not easily apparent statements. He also carries economic theory into social theory, showing that if all men married women four years younger than them where population is growing at three percent annually, eventually women of marrying age may outnumber men by more than 12%. The book has several of these nuggets, but leaves out an obvious and one of my favorite lessons about education: when a student goes to school, s/he not only "loses" the money s/he spends on tuition, but also her/his earning power during the years spent studying. For this reason, one could argue that it seems more sensical to attend school when there is a recession and to work when unemployment is low.

The glaring gap in this book is the problem of freeloaders--what do we do, for example, about the neighbor who waters his lawn excessively during a water shortage, thereby creating less incentive for others to conserve water? The author most likely believes that education will assist this problem, but this may be an idealistic notion at best. Still, Schelling manages to prove that cooperation rather than competition in some cases may produce better results, leading to viable arguments against selfish behavior.

5 out of 5 stars The big picture relevance of details.......2006-03-25

I enjoyed this book for it's stimulating arguments and everyday examples of big picture, "big topics" issues. As a novice to any type of economic analysis I've found the book informative and interesting. I recommend this book to anybody wishing to increase their awareness of the relevance of everyday events and experience to bigger, more intellectual topics.

        4 out of 5 stars 1970s Freakonomics.......2006-03-23

Game theory has been criticized for being able to explain anything, yet having little predictive capability. Whatever the case, Thomas Schelling's book is a gem. He takes everyday life phenomena and applies some systematic analysis as to why these things happen. It's a quick read and when you are done you too will keep viewing any issues coming your way as if they were seeking an equilibrium. With the varied topics and colorful examples it's the 1970s equivalent of "Freakonomics".

5 out of 5 stars Great reading and very varied.......2005-11-18

This is probably Schelling's best book and is up against tough competition. But his mind is razor-sharp, his examples always fascinating and he is quite simply the best writer of economics around. This is not an introductory economics book - it's too original for that - but it is perfectly accessible to the general reader. Find out why neighbourhoods are segregated, why nobody sits in the front row of a lecture hall, and best of all, the economics of christmas card lists. A joy.

            Book Description

`This book examines European Economic and Monetary Union from the perspective of public choice theory - that is, whether it is consistent with the interests of the protagonists. EMU was born mainly out of the political agenda for creating ever-closer union. Professor Martin-Das explains how the interaction of economic shocks and political interests has the potential to break up EMU and frustrate that objective. The book is a careful survey of the various fields of economic thought that come together in this topic, as well as a mine of information on the European Union's institutions and evolution.'

            - Patrick Minford, Cardiff Business School, University of Wales, UK

The future of European Monetary Union (EMU) stands as one of the most important economic issues of the era. The author argues that in the event of macroeconomic shocks, rather than acting as a cohesive force, EMU could give rise to disunity. As EMU is not an optimal currency area, asymmetric shocks affecting each country differently could be critical to its future.

The success of EMU depends upon the ability of institutions in the EU to satisfy the monetary and fiscal policy demands of sufficient numbers of national constituents, interest groups, and multinational corporations. This book employs principles from Public Choice to analyze the EU institutions that participate in the monetary policy making process of EMU and assesses whether they have the mechanisms to cope with asymmetric macroeconomic shocks. In particular, it examines the European Council, Council of Ministers, European Commission, European Parliament and the European Central Bank.

This book provides an invaluable critique of the EMU plan and will be of interest to scholars of European economics, macroeconomics and Public Choice.

Kenneth Arrow and Gérard Debreu have throughout their careers continuously produced ideas at the very frontier of economics. Together, they have made unparalleled contributions on the properties of general equilibrium systems in economics, the study of collective choice and welfare economics.

The editors have shown their usual rigor in selecting those papers which, in their view, have made the most important contributions in their particular areas of expertise. This volume will be an essential source of reference for students, researchers and practitioners alike.

                Book Description

Subject of this book is the intersection between political science and macroeconomics. The central idea is the existence of a political economic equilibrium in which the government acts to dampen the business cycle. The election cycle implies that this equilibrium may be a cycle rather than a point. An extension of new Keynesian theory provides a model of endogenous stabilization in which the government practices short-run stabilization policy which dampens the impact of exogenous shocks. This is a situation in which rational voters favor discretionary policy over a fixed policy rule even with rational economic agents. Special attention is given to the relevant data and to the possibilities of hypothesis testing.

                      Book Description

Kula contends that conventional time-dependent theories in welfare economics are based on the unwarranted assumption that people live forever, an assumption that underpins the criteria for many decision-making activities and one that leads public sector policy makers to discriminate against future generations. It is seen in its most extreme in decision making on such long-term projects as nuclear power facilities, whose effects will be visited upon many future generations. How did this assumption gain currency and influence? Kula says, "this oddity has been imposed by mathematical economists who now dominate the scene." Kula aggressively challenges these theories, which he alleges are untrue and unjust, provides an alternative method for discounting, and shows how its application can yield dramatically positive results. His book is thus a unique, important contribution to the theory and practice of decision making in public endeavors, intended not only for academics but equally for their practitioner colleagues in all parts of the world. Kula corrects the conventional theory by assuming societal models in which individuals are mortal and generations overlap. From this emerges a new discounting theory which leads to outcomes that are dramatically different from the old ones. The new criterion is called modified discounting, and can be readily applied to real-life projects. In Part I, Kula lays out his theory and constructs the new decision-making method, in which public policy makers accept the proposition that all generations ought to be treated equitably. Then, in Part II, he provides five case studies to illustrate his theory, each devoted to major public activities such as nuclear waste disposal, forestry, agriculture, and urban transport, and based on experiences in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.

                        Book Description

Reform of the welfare sector is an important yet difficult challenge for countries in transition from socialist central planning to market-oriented democracies. Here a scholar of the economics of socialism and post-socialist transition, and a health economist take on this challenge. They offer health sector reform recommendations for ten countries of Eastern Europe, drawn from nine guiding principles. The authors conclude that policymakers need to achieve a balance, both assuring social solidarity through universal access to basic health services and expanding individual choice and responsibility through voluntary supplemental insurance.

Reform of the welfare sector is an important yet difficult challenge for all countries in transition from socialist central planning to market-oriented democracies. Here a scholar of the economics of socialism and post-socialist transition and a health economist take on this challenge. This book offers health sector reform recommendations for ten countries of Eastern Europe, drawn consistently from a set of explicit guiding principles. After discussing sector-specific characteristics, lessons of international experience, and the main set of initial conditions, the authors advocate reforms based on organized public financing for basic care, private financing for supplementary care, pluralistic delivery of services, and managed competition. Policymakers need to achieve a balance, both assuring social solidarity through universal access to basic health services and expanding individual choice and responsibility through voluntary supplemental insurance. The authors also consider the problems that undermine effectiveness of market-based competition in the health sector.

Since the 2001 Report of the Commission on Macroeconomics and Health, a number of countries have set up multisectoral national commissions or similar bodies to review options, formulate a plan, and make detailed estimates of the costs of scaling up health investments and expanding access to essential health services. This report presents country experiences in developing and shaping work to address long-term planning for the health sector. It identifies areas of action to which the national commissions have contributed, from mobilizing political will and building much-needed evidence, to strengthening national planning processes. These lay the groundwork for sustainable improvements in health for the world's poor people. The report clarifies the most intractable challenges that have impeded faster health progress, and gives concrete examples of how countries have started to address them through an integrated approach to health sector development and financing. This experience will be integrated into the core work of WHO, across the organization. It will contribute to global health and development discussions and help to guide the way forward for national policy-makers and development partners.
