JACK KIRBY IS STILL THE KING OF COMIC BOOKS!!!.......2001-07-13
JACK KIRBY IS STILL THE KING OF COMIC BOOKS!!! Yes, I hate to admit it, but I agree with most of the other reviewers that the writing in this graphic novel reprint of some old FANTASTIC FOUR stories is not Kirby's best work--or even the best Dr. Doom appearances, because those were issues 57-60!!!--but even a Kirby collection at 80% is still better than 90% of other comic books, and so I rate this graphic novel 4 stars.
But Kirby's artwork--inked by INKER SUPREME JOE SINNOTT, THE MOST UNDERRATED MAN IN THE HISTORY OF COMIC BOOKS JUST FOR HIS INKING OF JACK KIRBY'S WORK!!!--in reprinted issues 84 through 87 is...FANTASTIC!!! And that's not just the way they drew Dr. Doom, but also Mr. Fantastic, The Torch, The Thing, the supporting characters, the scenery, and of course, the women!!!
I've bought a lot of graphic novels over the years--including the first ever printed, THE ORIGINS OF MARVEL HEROES--but I'd probably rank THE VILLAINY OF DR. DOOM #2 after that, because...
JACK KIRBY IS STILL THE KING OF COMIC BOOKS!!!

the villainy of doctor doom.......2001-05-25
The book was a dissapointment for me. I am a big Dr Doom fan and expected a lot better. I thought about returning it, but i usually keep the comics i buy, just to add to my collection. The highlight of the entire book seems to be the fight between the thing and the doc in the battle of the baxter building. Other than that it was a let-down. The writing in some of the stories did dissapoint me at times and devaluated my image of the charater of Dr Doom. In one story, when Doom refered to two bombs he had set, he replied: "my subjects!!----I forgot!!" It may seem my complaint is over the top, but the Doom we all know would never admit to a fault. This is but one example of one the times i felt let down by the writers. Additionally, since the book featured more footage of the fantastic four than Dr Doom, it probably should be called Doom V the FF, at the least!Overall, I wasn't too impressed with the book but I guess if you are a true Dr Doom fan, you probably better see for yourself, afterall, you can always return it. As a final note, i will say to any Dr Doom fan who has not read Triumph and Torment, you must read this book to see Doom at his finest...
Incomplete Dr. Doom.......2000-08-08
I am one of the biggest Doctor Doom Fans of all time. I bought this book because the cover was a previously unpublished masterpiece by Jack Kirby which is gold. Where this book fell way short was the incomplete reprints of a few of the issues. It was noticeable that parts of the book were cut out, and that is a big sticking point for me. I felt cheated on the full story. Where Marvel usaully leaves me grinning ear to ear with the Trade Paperbacks, I was left needing more. Dr. Doom was definately villainous in this as we get to see two of the greatest FF writers in Stan Lee, and John Byrne and two of the greatest Pencillers of all time Kirby, and Byrne. But the incomplete issues left me feeling cheated on the full scope of the book. And I think they could have found some other comics where Doom proved his evil than just the Fantastic Four. The book is called the Villany of Dr. Doom not the Fantastic Four vs. Doctor Doom, seeing him clash with the Avengers, The X-Men, Spider-Man or the Hulk would have made this a more enjoyable book. But Doom is awesome and this book is good when it does not clip out part of the comic.
Great book by great authors.......2000-02-04
Do you like art of Jack Kirby? Do you enjoy scripts of Stan Lee? Do you consider John Byrne excellent author? I do. And I do love comics of yesteryears. For me there is no other possibility: five stars, no less.
Jack Kirby Lives On!.......1999-11-15
Some of the finest FF stories featuring Dr Doom collected in a single volume. FF #39-40 is here, a fabulous story where the Fantastic Four try to regain the Baxter Building from Doctor Doom without their powers. Also included is FF #84-87, where the FF go to Latveria. Beautiful Jack Kirby art never has looked better. They should have included the story where Dr Doom stole the Silver Surfer's powers or FF #200 (Doom vs Reed alone). The stories appear to be edited with some scenes being omitted. However, all faults aside, this is a good volume with great stories and art.

Book Description
* When are numbers the basis for sound decisions and when do they result in planning and policy disasters?
* An original and stimulating examination of the flaws and dangers of widely used international economic, development, and poverty indices and how to improve them
* A major new text for undergraduate courses in human geography, development studies, and economics
The use of numbers to condense complex systems into easily digested "bites" of information is very much in fashion. At one level they are intended to enhance transparency, accountability, and local democracy, while at another they provide a means of enhancing performance. However, all indicators suffer from the same basic problem that, ironically, is also their biggest advantage--condensing something highly complex into a few simple numbers. Love them or hate them, there is no denying that people use indicators to make decisions.
This book explores the use of indicators in the field of human development. Part I provides a brief outline of the contested meaning of "development" and how indicators and indices have been used as means of testing the realization of these development visions in practice in a range of institutional contexts. Part II discusses the limitations of such indicators and indices, and illustrates how they depend on the vision of development adopted. The book also suggests how indices and indicators can best be employed and presented.

Book Description
We are constantly bombarded by statistical indicators such as weather reports, election results, inflation rates and stock market trends. Many of these indicators govern our lives. This book demystifies the scientific or pseudo-scientific aura that surrounds indicators and shows how they can be usefully applied for practical purposes. It explains in simple terms what indicators are, how they are developed from statistics with special objectives in mind and the ways in which they should be interpreted. The book covers the wide range of disciplines within the social sciences, from economics, health and education to a more specialized discussion of culture, human rights and peace research. No other book on indicators is as comprehensive in the fields that it covers and as clear in its explanation of general theory and techniques. Robert Horn, formerly an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, has published widely in a variety of professional journals.

Book Description
The contrast is vivid. While the majority of people in the industrial world and some in the developing world enjoy unprecedented affluence, a far greater number of people in the low-income countries live in abject poverty. Although several developing countries are achieving rapid economic growth and poverty reduction, most formerly centrally planned countries are struggling to implement market-oriented reforms in the midst of economic deterioration and rising poverty. The paramount importance of reducing poverty worldwide is forcing economists and policymakers to look at how income distribution and economic growth interact.
The essays in this volume grew out of a 1995 conference sponsored by the International Monetary Fund. The contributors are scholars and policymakers from academic institutions, governments, and international organizations. The questions discussed include: How does income distribution interact with economic growth in the short run and the long run? To what extent can government use transfer programs to increase the incomes of the poor? How can government use social programs to help the poor increase their income-earning capacity? Does distributional inequality create an obstacle to long-term poverty reduction? Alternatively, is distributional inequality a necessary means of achieving economic growth? Generally, the contributors agree that there need not be a trade-off between growth and equity in the long run. However, attempts by government to influence income distribution through large-scale tax and transfer programs can have a negative impact on growth.
Book Description
This is the gripping story of Marines bonding together as they learn the art of war. It is a story of leadership, brotherhood in battle, and courage in the midst of chaos. Second Lieutenant Michael Galway is the commaning officer of 2nd Platoon, Echo Company. He has inherited this misfit outfit and during the training that turns these men around, he restores their pride, makes them once again believe in themselves. On September 11, 2001, in the middle of a combined operations field exercise, they receive news that the unthinkable has happened. The attack on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center changes forever their thoughts about what they do and why they do it. Now it's real--and personal. Weeks later they receive orders that their battalion will deploy overseas. It is when their ship is in the Red Sea that they receive a change in orders. Intelligence has learned that ten of the top Al Queda leaders are in a village in Yemen. It is a rare opportunity to strike an important blow against a dangerous enemy. But for it to succeed, they must strike immediately. They have only one day to plan. It is a dangerous mission, calling for a helicopter flight deep into enemy territory, a night-time drop into the middle of a hostile village, capture and/or kill the Al Quaeda leaders, gather as much intelligence as possible, then return to the helicopters in an even quicker extraction over territory suddenly aware of the aerial invasion. But this is what the Marines of Echo Company trained for. And, in the ensuing combat, Galway's Marines succeed against all odds, and with minimum casualties. Mission accomplished, they return to their ship, proud of their success. It is then that things take a terrifying turn for the worse.
Customer Reviews:
His best yet (but see the author's comment below).......2006-10-20
I love the way this guy writes. His lieutenant is a World-Class wiseacre, giving his prospective as a platoon-level officer on the workings of the Marine Corps. But behind the sarcastic viewpoint, he's a good officer who works hard to turn his troops into an effective fighting force.
The first half of this book is a "Men-in-Training" look at the Marine Corps' training program, and the second half is a mission in Yemen. No dames.
From the Author.......2006-03-17

I love Amazon dearly, but they're having trouble getting this message and really should take this page down. So if you don't get your book, please don't blame me. A real view of today's Marines.......2005-08-05
Christie has succeeded in writing the rarest of military stories--one that is populated with real human characters. I think it was his combination of unflinching details and real-world motivations that brought this wide cast of soldiers to life. Christie is unafraid to show how today's Marines are not all shining beacons of virtue, but instead are much more flesh-and-blood. They goof around, they screw up, they bitch and moan, but yet they form a lethally efficient fighting force. Christie's strength in this book, as well as in his others, is showing the Marine Corps as it IS, not as we imagine it should be.
Anyone who wants a break from the Clancy-esque fantastic plots that are so common now will love Christie's latest offering. Its taut plot, sharp characters, and insider's eye for detail will satisfy any mature reader. I loved it, and I would recommend it to anyone.
21st century action that could be tomorrow's headlines.......2005-05-19
Christie combines his unique wit and talent for poignant, page-turning action in a book that everyone who was ever a Marine or wants to be a Marine should read. Building upon his own experiences as a platoon commander, Christie takes the reader though a series of events that could be titled, "Everyday experiences of a Marine Second Lieutenant." Gear gets lost or stolen, fights break out, orders get misconstrued. Plans are made, changed, scrapped, and started again. And through all these often hilarious sequences, the batallion moves inexorably closer to deployment -- and the potential for combat. It's the combat sequences that leave the reader gasping for air and yearning for more. Unlike most authors in this genre, Christie allows his characters to make mistakes and to deal with the consequences. And as you'll see, the consequences can be dire.
It does not get any better than this!.......2005-04-27
Mr. Christie writes with the passion and truth that comes from experience! His ability to put you into the life of a young Marine Corps platoon commander is outstanding. The humor, tension and insanity that comes with the Marine Corps way of life and close combat are gripping.
This was an excellent page turner from start to finish.
I predict that Mr. Christie will find himself mentioned in the same breath as Webb and Coonts in the not to distant future.

Drinking sheds, theme sheds, shed sheds.......2005-09-25
I didn't realize that my husband's obsession with sheds had something to do with his Y-chromosome until I spotted this book in a National Trust store. Naturally I grabbed it up to find out why we now have two-sheds-going-on-four on our property. It isn't completely about storage space, since we have a big, largely empty basement (although I realize it's not going to stay empty for long. Basements never do).
According to the author, sheds were a product of the Dark Ages: "'Scead,' of course, means partial darkness or comparative obscurity. These are fundamental concepts in understanding what made a Sheddist originally. He was a kind of wise man, a hermit, an oracle. He was partially dark and comparatively obscure but ordinary folk knew he was different, in a very special way."
It is also suggested that men are encouraged by their spouses to build and inhabit their sheds: "How do you expect me to get on with my womanly, feminine tasks with a great fat useless idle ugly wart like you under my feet the whole time?"
I refute this sexist notion, as it was entirely my husband's idea to populate our property with sheds. I hold my tongue because hanging about in a shed is much cheaper than hanging about in a pub.
"Men and Sheds" is a silly, endearing, very British book filled with black-and-white photos of men, their sheds, and the weird things that they store in them, e.g. Ethiopian banjos, reptiles, and the world's worst LPs.
fresh honey.......2003-03-31
It is so nice to see something that does exist, without being sexist. I loved it growing up with pigeon sheds and all that, I know how important the shed is! nice, very diplomatice, and captures the essence of men and shed...thankyou
(just bought the book for research)

Of cultural interest.......2002-07-30
As a Canadian version of a bloke with a shed, I found this book fun and interesting. On the other hand, it emphasizes the anachronism, and is really more of a cultural commentary than relevant to the DIY crowd. Being Australia, the sheds are mostly metal.
Got a shed? Get this book........2000-02-26
Who would have thought that backyard sheds could make for such a cool book? "Blokes and Sheds" dives into the murky and mysterious world of backyard sheds, bringing pearls to the surface.
In all, the book is well produced: the photography is awesome, the writing is witty, and the printing is excellent. It's well-suited to both the coffee table and the bathroom.
A perfect book for every man in you life!.......2000-01-16
This book is filled with stunning photos and wonderful stories about Australian men and thier sheds. Mark Thomson's easy writing style is a pleasure to read, a great book!
