Product Description

Eric Carle. Now even younger children can follow the little green caterpillar as he eats his way to becoming a beautiful butterfly in this sturdy board book. Trim size 5.06" x 7.02".

Amazon.com Reviews

"In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf." So begins Eric Carle's modern classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. More than 12 million copies of this book have been sold in its original, full-sized edition, and the beloved tale of science and gluttony has been translated into 20 languages. This five-by-four-inch miniature edition is truly tiny, with tiny type, but it is a nice size for small hands to hold and flip through the pictures. Despite its diminished state, the book is complete in every detail, following the ravenous caterpillar's path as he eats his way through one apple (and the pages of the book itself) on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, three plums on Wednesday, and so on, through cherry pie and sausage--until he is really fat and has a stomachache. And no doubt you know what happens next! Kids love butterfly metamorphosis stories, and this popular favorite teaches counting and the days of the week, too. A fun gift package for caterpillar fans. (Baby to preschool) --Karin Snelson

5 out of 5 stars The Very Hungry Caterpillar board book.......2007-10-18

I bought this book for my 20 month old grandson, and he loves it. When we read it, we put his index finger in each hole of the food that the caterpillar eats. He seems to enjoy it more when he can participate in part of it. Usually by the time we get thru all the food that the caterpillar eats, instead of being excited about the beautiful picture of the butterfly, he is ready to go on to the next book. This book is perfect in every way for his age.The Very Hungry Caterpillar board book

4 out of 5 stars Childrens Book.......2007-10-17

Great book to read children teaching them the life cycle of the caterpillar. Beautiful illustrations. Is a favourite with my children.

4 out of 5 stars Shipment Delay.......2007-10-09

The book was in excellent condition, but we did not receive it until at least a week after all the other items we had ordered were received. They were all going to be mailed to our grandson, so it was a little frustrating to have to wait on this one item.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Eric Carle.......2007-09-15

This is one of Carle's best books (along with Brown Bear, Brown Bear). It teaches counting to 5, the days of the week, and how caterpillars become butterflies. The illustrations are, of course, stunning. My daughter has enjoyed this book since she was about 8 months old.

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2007-09-09

My baby loves this book. It's an easy read. I read it to my 3 month old, who loves it. It has little holes where the caterpillar chews through the book.

The ordering process could not have been easier and the book and stuffed animal it came with including the packaging were adorable. I am very satisfied. Thanks

5 out of 5 stars raves by parents of the gift-receiver.......2007-01-18

For my grandson's first birthday, I wanted a gift that would please him visually and stimulate him mentally. A friend suggested this book because her son had enjoyed it many years ago. Feedback from my grandson, through his parents, is that he enjoys the book very much, and the toy is nice but not as captivating as listening to someone reading the book. Thanks for a very good purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Favorite.......2006-07-21

This classic favorite captures the interest of children because the caterpillar "eats" its way through the pages of the book. There are actual holes in the pages. My 3-yr old niece loved the book and when she got her own copy she was thrilled. But the plush caterpillar made it even more special. Both the book and the toy never leave her side.

5 out of 5 stars Charming ý Eat Your Way Through An Afternoon!.......2003-09-28

Story Synopsis:
- A caterpillar eats his way through different foods until he is full and weaves a cocoon transforming into a beautiful butterfly. Charming colorful illustrations of foods along with the fat caterpillar and catchy little holes in the foods where the caterpillar "had his snack" make this book a hit with young children.

Review:
- Eric Carle's classic, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" has charmed millions over the years with it's simple memorable story, striking illustrations and the gimmicky holes on each of its' pages. To date, more than 12 million copies of this book have been sold in its original, full-sized edition, and mini editions. This beloved tale of science and gluttony has also been translated into 20 languages and counting. Die-cut pages (each page has a hole where the "caterpillar" ate through the food item) illustrate what the caterpillar ate on successive days. Strikingly bold, colorful pictures and a simple text in large, clear type tell the story of a hungry little caterpillar's culinary progress through an amazing variety and quantity of foods. Full at last, he weaves a cocoon around himself and goes to sleep, to emerge a few weeks later as a wonderfully transformed and beautiful butterfly! The final, double-page picture of the butterfly is a joyous explosion of color, a vibrant affirmation of the wonder and beauty of Nature. This story is a hit every time. Carle's bright colors and clever die-cut artwork never cease to entertain even the youngest child, and there is surely nothing in nature closer to magic than the emergence of a butterfly. This is a beautiful, educational and fun book.

Literary Features For Young Readers:
- Simple words appropriate to pre-readers, younger children and ELLs (English Language Learners).
- The predictability of the words and their tie-in with the illustrations makes the book easy for pre-readers to understand.
- The rhythm of the prose makes the book memorable and fun book to read for little people.
- Strikingly bold, colorful pictures tell the story of the hungry little caterpillar in complement with the simple words.
- Eric Carle's art gimmick (i.e. the die-cut holes through the food illustrations on each page) gives small children (and the occasional adult like me!) an extra bit of fun and enjoyment
- The moral lessons of the story are simple and universal: "Don't judge a person by the way they look" and "real beauty is more than skin-deep."

Teaching Tie-ins:
- Counting skills (Foods accumulate progressively)
- The days of the week.
- Nutrition (The best food for the caterpillar is the leaf, not the candy, cake, etc. or why we can't eat chocolate and candy all day long)
- Intro to science and biology:
It is a fun book with its' "holes" that have been eaten through the pages, and become a preschoolers introduction to science/biology when the little caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly.
- Shapes (foods)

Possible Projects:
- Food or nutrition mobiles and other related projects.
- Art collages in the style or Eric Carle using torn tissue and other media.
- Simple life cycle science projects (posters are life cycle mobiles)
- Caterpillar art activity: creating caterpillars out of an egg cartoons.
- As a preschool and kindergarten teacher, I had classes perform simple plays for young children based upon this book.
-----------------------------------------------

I highly recommend this charming little book for younger children and ELLs (English Language Learners).

My 3 year old asks us to read this book everyday (several times). We find it entertaining and this book ends on a good message (many children's books seem to have no story or ending).

4 out of 5 stars The Very Hungry Caterpillar.......2006-12-14

I liked this book. I thought that the book was fun to read and kept me interested even though it is a childrens book. I remember when I read this book when I was little and I would read it like two more times. This book also helps little kids learn the process of becomeing a butterfly. I know that my little brother likes it and he is 5.

This was our first run in with Eric Carle. A friend at my office recommended this book as a Caldecott winner (which at the time I had never heard of) so I bought it. My son loved it 5 years ago and he still gets a kick out of it today. My 12 month old also loves it now too. Best of all, it's fun for parents to read.

I love this book!! It was one of the first books I ever read and I was addicted to it instantly. I loved the pictures of the food it ate through, when it turned all fat, and when it turned into a butterfly! It is the cutest book ever.
I gave this book 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Great for French instruction, but am I saying it right?.......2007-09-25

I'm a language teacher (Spanish) and am bilingual. My goal is to introduce our four children to French as well as Spanish, so I'm taking a stab at doing all the things I suggest to other parents for learning Spanish. It's hard, when you don't know the language! I worked through Flip Flop French, which comes with a CD, the first two lessons, and then read this book with the children, and they enjoyed it (we have it in Spanish and English as well.)

I'm writing this review today because I heard the boys (4 and 5 years old) sounding out the words, and saying..."wait, you don't say then end in French, just in Spanish." So, it's working!

I do hope I can find a audio version, though, as I know my French accent probably sounds very Spanish!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, fun language tool.......2007-07-26

This is a very good book for teaching young children some French basics.

The approach is good stylistically as well - it is not as pedantic as some of the less sophisticated books and stories can be crafted with this as the basis.

Devine Combien Je t Aime (Guess how much I love you) is also lovely - and a must-buy for anyone hoping to instill a love of the French language in their children at an early age.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to teach french to little ones.......2006-03-19

We got this book because we are trying to teach our 5 yr old some basic French. This book is great for naming objects and days of the week the repetitive nature of the ryhmes make it easy for the child to learn. Since she knew and loved the english version, this was a great way to learn some french.

I recomend this with Ours Brun, Dis-Moi (Brown Bear What Do You See), Bonsoir Lune (Goodnight Moon) and Devine Combien Je t Aime (Guess how much I love you). These are books your child already know by heart and are a great way to introduce a second language to your young child.

3 out of 5 stars Small, cubical book with a few thick pages.......2007-09-28

I wish that I had realized a little better what I was getting when I ordered this. It is a small, cubical book...about 2-1/4" on a side. It has ten very pages, each 3/16" thick. Each page has one word, with the drawing matching that word on the opposite page, e.g. "strawberry", "pickle", "cocoon". It might be appropriate for a baby who is just learning words but not for the very verbal 3.5 year old child for whom I had ordered it.

Saltman and Goodman show how corporate-produced curricula, films, and corporate-promoted books often use depictions of family love, childhood innocence, and compassion in order to sell the public on policies that ironically put the profit of multinational corporations over the well-being of people. In doing so, the authors reveal the extent to which globalization depends upon education and also show how battles over culture, language, and the control of information are matters of life, death, and democracy. 5 out of 5 stars A book everyone should read.......2002-04-01

At a time when consumerism has become the primary way in which people relate to the larger social order, Goodman and Saltman have written a rivoting critique of how corporae culture has undermined civic virture, participation, and citizenship. Written in a language that is accessible, clear, and vibrant, this book is a wake up call to educators, parents, and others about the need to resist selling democracy to the highest bidder. Goodman and Saltman examine in a number of studies how corporate culture lacks a language for ethics, justice, and and defending the public good. Read this book and pass it on to your children, friends, and teachers.

              Book Description

Since the late 1980s, economic growth has again become a central topic in economic theorizing. Recent endogenous growth theory has greatly contributed to the development of the field. Old and New Growth Theories analyzes the most recent developments in the theory of economic growth and compares these to earlier theories.

The book's originality is due in part to the assembly of contributions from scholars of different persuasions - some within the mainstream and others from Keynesian, Kaleckian and Sraffian traditions. The authors deal with a comprehensive variety of research topics including the key elements necessary to generate growth, the mechanisms of endogeneity of growth and technical change, the role of aggregate demand and of investment in physical and human capital. Economic policy issues are also considered.

The book will be appreciated by scholars of economic growth, macroeconomics, classical and Keynesian economics as well as historians of economic thought.

“If you think that day-to-day life is filled with contradiction, conflict, hypocrisy, and a host of terms that have yet to be defined, wait until you visit cyberspace.” Until now the Internet has, by and large, escaped the attention of humorists. In Chat Rooms in Wonderland, author Wayne McDonald offers the reader a witty tour of an offshoot of the “Internet Age”—the “Chat Room.” Starting with a brief introduction to both the history and structure of the 'net, he then, using almost every literary device known to man, introduces the reader to the various types of chat rooms they might encounter while pointing out the absurd behavior of each room's patrons. From the generic chat room to those concerning everything from politics to sex, nothing escapes his caustic observations. In addition to his observations concerning each group of rooms, each chapter is followed by an essay poking even more fun at the subject under discussion. Chat Rooms in Wonderland is proof that you can find humor in the most unlikely places.
