The spiritual premise in The Purpose-Driven Life is that there are no accidents---God planned everything and everyone. Therefore, every human has a divine purpose, according to God's master plan. Like a twist on John F. Kennedy's famous inaugural address, this book could be summed up like this: "So my fellow Christians, ask not what God can do for your life plan, ask what your life can do for God's plan." Those who are looking for advice on finding one's calling through career choice, creative expression, or any form of self-discovery should go elsewhere. This is not about self-exploration; it is about purposeful devotion to a Christian God. The book is set up to be a 40-day immersion plan, recognizing that the Bible favors the number 40 as a "spiritually significant time," according to author Rick Warren, the founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, touted as one of the nation largest congregations. Warren's hope is that readers will "interact" with the 40 chapters, reading them one day at a time, with extensive underlining and writing in the margins. As an inspirational manifesto for creating a more worshipful, church-driven life, this book delivers. Every page is laden with references to scripture or dogma. But it does not do much to address the challenges of modern Christian living, with its competing material, professional, and financial distractions. Nonetheless, this is probably an excellent resource for devout Christians who crave a jumpstart back to worshipfulness. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

The most basic question everyone faces in life is "Why am I here?". What is my purpose? Self-help books suggest that people should look within, at their own desires and dreams, but Rick Warren says the starting place must be with God—and His eternal purpose for each life. Real meaning and significance comes from understanding and fulfilling God’s purposes for putting us on earth.

"The Purpose-Driven Life" takes the groundbreaking message of the award-winning "Purpose-Driven Church" and goes deeper, applying it to the lifestyle of individual Christians. This book helps readers understand God’s incredible plan for their lives. Warren enables them to see “the big picture” of what life is all about and begin to live the life God created them to live.

Download Description

Another Landmark Book by Rick Warren. You are not an accident. Even before the universe was created, God had you in mind, and he planned you for his purposes. These purposes will extend far beyond the few years you will spend on earth. You were made to last forever! Self-help books often suggest that you try to discover the meaning and purpose of your life by looking within yourself, but Rick Warren says that is the wrong place to start. You must begin with God, your Creator, and his reasons for creating you. You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense. This book will help you understand why you are alive and God's amazing plan for you-both here and now, and for eternity. Rick Warren will guide you through a personal 40-day spiritual journey that will transform your answer to life's most important question: What on earth am I here for? Knowing God's purpose for creating you will reduce your stress, focus your energy, simplify your decisions, give meaning to your life, and, most importantly, prepare you for eternity. The Purpose-DrivenT Life is a blueprint for Christian living in the 21st century-a lifestyle based on God's eternal purposes, not cultural values. Using over 1,200 scriptural quotes and references, it challenges the conventional definitions of worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism. In the tradition of Oswald Chambers, Rick Warren offers distilled wisdom on the essence of what life is all about. This is a book of hope and challenge that you will read and re-read, and it will be a classic treasured by generations to come.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Generally excellent thoughts, very bad scripture use.......2007-10-25

As other reviewers have pointed out, this book is generally good. One of the best parts for me was touched on only very briefly, and that is the fact, unrecognized by most Christians, that the biblical perspective of a Christian's eternal reward includes serious tasks to do and great responsibility and authority, at least for those whom God has prepared for such roles. If a person asks "What is there to do once we leave this world?" the thought that occurs to me is "What ever made you think God would only create once?"

But Dr Warren's use of the Bible is terribly flawed for the following reasons:
1. He frequently uses "proof texts" that are taken out of context and were never intended to support the point he is making.
2. He sometimes sites biblical passages that don't even look like they have anything to do with the point he is supposedly making.
3. He constantly changes from one translation to another. If he knows the Greek or Hebrew, he should just do his own translation. However, he writing gives the appearance that he does not have that expertise, and that he is searching among translations to find a word or phrase that supports his point.
4. He sites passages from the Mosaic Law as applicable to Christians, though Jesus and the authors of the New Testament make it clear that this is bad practice.
5. He sites the biblical quotations from people God judged as wrong as if these were divine revelation.
6. He sites as divine revelation things that the Bible presents as human thinking.

With these an similar problems, it is no wonder that he occasionally gets off track doctrinally.

On top of this, he comes up with a list of five purposes for the Christian's life and attempts to show that these are the five and the only five taught by the Bible. In fact, Jesus gave two purposes--1) Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength; and 2) Love your neighbor as yourself. Dr Warren's other three purposes are a subset of number two, and there are other purposes that could fit just as well under number two. The Bible never lists these five as the five purposes for a Christian's life.

One point Dr Warren and many Christian theologians, teachers, and preachers get wrong is the idea that our serving God has nothing to do with whether we are saved or lost. In fact, the New Testament concept of faith or belief (same word for both in the Bible) specifically includes making God's will the focus of one's life. In Hebrews 3, the word "unbelief" and is used interchangeably with "disobedience." In John 5, Jesus specifically states that salvation depends on belief only and then immediately clarifies that this means what we do in this life. Paul, in Romans 3:31 clarifies his use of "belief" to show that the belief he is talking about will lead one to live according to God's will. And James 2 draws a clear comparison between belief that does not affect one's life (which he declares is useless) versus belief that affects how we live. Christian faith involves every aspect of life, as anyone who has experienced real Christianity knows.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I have ever owned!!!!.......2007-10-24

I bought this book, hoping it would lend me some insight into my "purpose" in life. I can't put it down! It is written in such a way that you never get bored with it, and it's so insightful. I find myself going back and re-reading certain chapters that really hit a nerve. It's wonderful!!!! I encourage everyone to own this book, and to read it and really commit to what it has to say. I also bought the journal and am finding that it is essential to have it along with the book, so that you can write down thoughts and really think about what each chapter explains about our Purpose. I'm wondering what I ever did without this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful !!.......2007-10-23

I must be the only person on the planet who didn't resonate with this author's book. I still enjoyed hearing the author in the audio version, and I satisfied my curiosity about the national hoopla -- but I can't say I was inspired, motivated or entertained. I gave the set away to friends who are in awe of author Rick Warren.

5 out of 5 stars Enormously Helpful.......2006-04-15

I was very surprised at how well I connected with "Purpose Driven Life". I'm not a born-again Christian; I'm just a regular guy. I never thought how all the little details in my life were created for God's purpose. But a lot of my thinking came together when I listed to some of the author's ideas.

I've always been a Christian, but I used to feel that a lot of chance and guessing played a part in whether you go to Heaven. I feel more confident that God loves us and wants us to go to Heaven. I trust Him. I also feel better about what to do here on Earth, because of this audio book.

5 out of 5 stars great encouragement for anyone.......2006-02-25

Even if you're not Christian, this is something to consider. Direct presentation challenged my life view, and is helping me to refocus.

loved the book. loved the workbook. but hearing this author's voice talking is different to me then the written word alone. super job. non offensive to any religon. i would highly recommend this book/ cd's.

                    Book Description

Generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation of nonlinear systems has two important advantages over conventional maximum likelihood (ML) estimation: GMM estimation usually requires less restrictive distributional assumptions and remains computationally attractive when ML estimation becomes burdensome or even impossible. This book presents an in-depth treatment of the conditional moment approach to GMM estimation of models frequently encountered in applied microeconometrics. It covers both large sample and small sample properties of conditional moment estimators and provides an application to empirical industrial organization. With its comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the subject which includes topics like bootstrapping and empirical likelihood techniques, the book addresses scientists, graduate students and professionals in applied econometrics.

                      Book Description

Since the late 1970s, Britain has become a more unequal society. This book analyzes the dramatic widening of the income distribution, the growth of poverty, and the factors that have driven them. It examines how government spending and the taxes that pay for it affect people's incomes, why
they take the forms they do, what we think of them, how things have changed since New Labour came to power in 1997, and the future pressures that any government will face as the population ages.

                            Book Description

This major two-volume collection focuses on the economics of distributional equity and the way general criteria for comparisons of income-distribution can be used to inform the analysis of inequality and poverty. The issues addressed include:

                            • the nature of general ranking rules for comparing economic states based on simple ethical principles

                            • the close relationship between the analysis of poverty and that of inequality or social welfare

                            • the structure and properties of inequality and poverty indices.

In addition to covering theoretical and empirical questions, the development of the subject is set in historical context. The extensive new introduction by the editor explains the relationship between the various component topics.

These insightful volumes will be an essential source of reference for students, researchers and practitioners.

                                  Book Description

It is often said that the federal government cannot or should not attempt to address America's problems of poverty and inequality—because its bureaucracy is wasteful or its programs ineffective. But is this true? In this book, Benjamin I. Page and James R. Simmons examine a number of federal and local programs, detailing what government action already does for its citizens and assessing how efficient it is at solving the problems it seeks to address. Their conclusion, surprisingly, is the polar opposite of the prevailing rhetoric—What Government Can Do is an insightful and compelling argument that it both can and should do more.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for concerned citizens........2002-07-31

This book is very informative about a whole range of social issues. Although it specifically deals with the American social scene it has an universal appeal. It dissects problems and situations like poverty, income inequality, lack of a fair electoral system, prevailing taxation policies, basic needs and "rights" of people, educational opportunities, homelessness, etc., and proposes possible solutions for them. This book dispels many myths associated with the poor and the needy. This book was a very agreeable experience for me and I will be promoting it among my friends. This detailed and thoroughly researched book will delight you if you are for Justice, Fairness and Equality. The book has a Reference section that is a treasure for progressive thinkers. Enjoy this book.

                                    Book Description

This important book uses empirical evidence to model and measure aggregate poverty and income dynamics in order to design appropriate policies to alleviate poverty. The book first provides an introduction to the measurement of inequality and poverty, using the Lorenz curve and the Gini and Atkinson measures. The author then draws together a number of studies concerned with the analysis of income distribution in both cross-sectional and lifetime contexts. He presents statistical models of income distribution and income mobility and examines the relationship between annual and lifetime distributions. The models are tested using US data from the current population survey to evaluate the empirical characteristics of income distribution. The book then turns to the evaluation of alternative tax and transfer systems and the debate over the use of means-testing. The author analyzes income dynamics, particularly the relationship between relative income mobility, inequality and social welfare. He then examines income dynamics in New Zealand for males and females using data collected by the Inland Revenue department to specify a simulation model of lifetime incomes. He concludes that information about the process of income dynamics is needed in order to implement appropriate policies to counteract poverty. The Dynamics of Inequality and Poverty will be essential reading for students and scholars of public sector economics, welfare economics and economic sociology.
