BOOK 10: THE SLIPPERY SLOPE - The older Baudelaire siblings - Violet and Klaus - are pulling out their hair in frustration when they find that they have been tricked by Count Olaf, and are now without their baby sister, Sunny - who, in all actuality, is a baby no more. For Sunny is now being held captive by Count Olaf and his troupe of villains, as Violet and Klaus are headed for their death off of a snowy peak. However, thanks to Violet's inventine skills, the two siblings are saved, and find that they must now make it up the slippery slope on foot. But when they meet a surprise person along their journey through snow gnats, a group of annoying Snow Scouts, who like to recite a drawn-out alphabet of the Snow Scout Pledge at any moment, and a snowy peak, the Baudelaires, along with their newfound friend, must rescue poor Sunny from Count Olaf's evil clutches, and solve the mystery of V.F.D. before it is too late. After all, one of their parents could still very well be alive. 5 stars.

BOOK 11: THE GRIM GROTTO - When your last name is Baudelaire, it is a known fact that you will somehow stumble upon trouble, no matter how hard you may try and avoid it. When you're last name is Baudelaire and you're an orphan, stumbling upon trouble increases tenfold. Which is why the Baudelaire orphans (Violet, Klaus, and Sunny) know instantly after they begin floating along the Stricken Stream that trouble is lurking around some vicious corner. However, as they are not dolphins, seals, or fish, they did not expect their next bout of trouble to take place underwater. But, alas, that is exactly where they find themselves on their next dreadful adventure. Having come across a submarine that is filled with three crew members (Captain Widdershins, his step-daughter Fiona, and, lo-and-behold the Baudelaire Orphans old pal, Phil), the Baudelaire's enter the underwater vehicle, and begin their next journey. Within a short while, the three orphans learn that Captain Widdershins is a member of V.F.D., and they quickly realize that he is on their side, willing to help them discover the truth about the fire that took their beloved parents lives. However, when the orphans, along with Fiona (a young mycologist), prepare for a bit of deep-sea diving, they soon find that young Sunny has been infected with Medusoid Mycelium (a deadly fungi). Now, the siblings are searching for a way to save their baby sister from a very certain death, without many supplies. As if that weren't difficult enough for the Baudelaire's to endure, they have just discovered that Count Olaf is now trailing them under the sea, and plans on capturing them, and (you guessed it) claiming their fortune as his own. 5 stars.

BOOK 12: THE PENULTIMATE PERIL - When we first met the three Baudelaire Orphans, they were splashing in tide pools along Briny Beach. That is, before their lives took a turn for the worst. Now, as we meet up with them once again in this twelfth volume, we again see them upon Briny Beach. However, this time things seem as if they are looking up, for they are in the hands of good - Kit Snicket. With the pregnant Kit in tow, the three Baudelaires are brought to the Denouement Hotel. A place kept in order by the Dewey Decimal System. The Hotel Denouement is the last safe place, and within a few days, each and every volunteer will meet up with one another, where they will celebrate the claiming of the sugar bowl over the hands of evil. However, with Sunny, Klaus, and Violet disguised as concierges, they soon learn - by using their "flaneur" skills - that many of the people lurking around the hallways of the Hotel Denouement are anything but good. In fact, it is while wrapped up in their clever disguises that the three orphans run into various terrible people from their past - from the unescapable Count Olaf, to the treacherous Vice Principal Nero; and the oft-times brainless Justice Strauss, to the carnival freaks known as Kevin, Colette, and Hugo. With a bit more detective work, and a little help from identical triplets Dewey, Frank, and Ernest, the orphans soon realize that while the upcoming gathering of volunteers is supposed to showcase how good triumphs over evil; the hotel is overrun by unkind masterminds who plan on wrecking the celebration. Now it is up to Violet, Klaus, and Sunny to make a very important decision...call off the volunteer gathering, or think up a way to triumph over the evil that has surrounded them ever since the day Mr. Poe informed them of their parents deaths. 5 stars.

This may be quite an unfortunate series. However, it is with my great displeasure to announce that these last three installments, leading up to the end of the Baudelaire Orphans woes, are possibly the best in the series, setting the reader up for an end all to be all thirteenth tale that will hopefully leave the Baudelaires in safe hands once more. In THE GLOOM LOOMS, we see the Baudelaires search for and attempt to rescue their youngest sister, Sunny, from the evil clutches of Count Olaf and his troupe of freaks; we see Count Olaf's soft side as he giggles - in an unnatural, somewhat annoying way - in an under-the-sea submarine; and we watch as Violet, Klaus, and Sunny impersonate a trio of concierges in the confusing Hotel Denouement, where each floor is set up according to the Dewey Decimal System. It is in these three disgraceful installments that we delve deeper into the mysteries of the Baudelaires, the intrepid V.F.D., and Lemony Snicket himself, as he attempts to "Snicket-ize" each and every reader. As would be expected, THE PENULTIMATE PERIL sets the scene for the upcoming grand finale, and makes it quite clear that the end is near.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2005-11-20

I thought these books, just like the others, were amazing! They added plot and depth and mystery to the storyline and put me on the edge of my seat! I can't wait for the next books!

1 out of 5 stars The Gloom Loons... FOR REAL!!!.......2005-11-19

"The Trouble Begins" was wonderful. "The Situation Worsens" was okay. "The Dillemma Deepens" were dull but interesting. THIS???????? It's a disgrace!!! I could put up with Lemony Snicket's talking for a while but this is insane!! I had to skip whole pages just to keep awake!? I mean WHO, WHO with the right mind wants definitions, stupid stories and lectures in an ADVENTURE BOOK!? But not just that, it becoming SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!! At first, the Series of Unfortunate Events was wonderful, full of adventure and mystery and exiting parts. Now, what I see is count olaf giving up on the children and the children going with a STUPID organization and DULLL characters and etc. and etc. and etc. I was so disssapointed with "The grim grotto" that I don't want to even see a page of "The Penulitamate Peril" that is the hardest to say. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY OR EXITEMENT FOR THIS PIECE OF JUNK, IF YOU LIKED THE BAD BEGGINNING, THE WIDE WINDOW, OR EVEN THE DULL MISERABLE MILL, THIS IS NOT THE SEQUEL FOR YOU. AS I SAID THE GLOOM REALLY LOOMS!!!

It's tough when the things that stand between you and your desired sugar bowl are a host of deadly mushrooms and an uncomfortable diving suit. The unlucky Baudelaire orphans find themselves in deep (once again) in this eleventh book in Lemony Snicket's odd-and-full-of-woe-but-quite-funny Series of Unfortunate Events. In The Grim Grotto, the siblings find themselves headed down Stricken Stream on a broken toboggan when they are spotted by the submarine Queequeg, carrying Captain Widdershins, his somewhat volatile stepdaughter Fiona, and optimistic Phil from Lucky Smells Lumbermill. The adventures that follow as the crew tries to get to the aforementioned sugar bowl before Count Olaf are so horrible that the narrator inserts factual information about the water cycle so that readers will get bored and stop reading the book. It doesn't work. As per usual, readers will want to soak up every awf! ul detail and follow the Baudelaires all the way back to the place we first met them--Briny Beach. 3 out of 5 stars Grim Reading.......2007-10-05

The Baudelaire orphans continue their search for the VFD and the sugar bowl with the hidden message as they escape down the slippery slope of the Mortmain Mountains and away from the evil Count Olaf. Their toboggan ride down the stream leads them to discover a submarine manned by a Captain, his stepdaughter, and Phil - a man the siblings met previously, all of which are friendly to the search for the sugar bowl and interested in keeping it out of Olaf's clutches. But just when it seems as though the Baudelaires have other people to work with and confide in, Olaf manages to strike again and keep the children on a collision course with disaster. The children must work together and keep their wits about them if they are to hope that they will someday escape from Olaf and his evil henchmen for good.

This installment contributes almost nothing to the overall plot line of the series. After a slight increase in the pace of the series, this one brings the fun back to a screeching halt. The concept is frustrating at this point and ready for the big conclusion. As in some of the earlier novels, the writing at the beginning of chapters is often disjointed and seems in need of good editing. It is good that there are only two books left because if there was no end in sight, I would likely put an end to it myself.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, Dear! The Dreadful Happenings Continue........2007-09-09

Dear Reader,

When we last saw the Baudelaire children, they were being swept out to sea after having fallen down a mountain. It was most dreadful. I should have just left them there and not continued reading about their unfortunate lives in THE GRIM GROTTO, the eleventh chronicle of those poor, unhappy Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny.

THE GRIM GROTTO finds them even in more dire circumstances than before. They are misled into believing they have found a former ally of the VFD. Then they have to live in the cramped and tight living arrangements aboard a submarine with no chance of getting out unless they put on these horribly heavy underwater-breathing suits. Aboard the submarine they are threatened from the outside by a giant mechanical monster and Count Olaf and his crew. Then we they finally do get out to walk around they are almost killed by poisonous mushrooms and despite all the precautions they take, disaster strikes anyway.

You'd best stay away from this one. But if do choose to read THE GRIM GROTTO, it's not my fault if anything happens.
Sincerely,

Uncle TV

5 out of 5 stars Hook-Handed Man's secret revealed!.......2007-08-14

After nearly escaping from the almost-melting Mortmain Mountains in the previous book in the series, The Slippery Slope (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 10), the Baudelaire orphans (Violet, Klaus, and Sunny) are taken in by the eccentric Captain Widdershins and his stepdaughter Fiona aboard a submarine. The Queequeg submarine is not exactly in good shape, so the Baudelaires are not exactly any more safe in this particular chapter of their lives than they ever were. During their perilous quest to find the mysterious sugar bowl down in an underwater grotto found on the bottom of the Striken Stream, the unlucky children encounter a poisonous fungus known as the Medusoid Mycelium. The deadly mushroom has the ability to grow on human throats and choke its victim to death in an hour or less. Of course, one of the Baudelaires is infected by the horrible fungus and might not make it to the next book! This book, along with all of the other books in the series, is great read for the little kids and the teens and the adults and everyone else who loves a good page-turner. Not only is this book a good mystery, but also touches on the subject of villainy. Just like in real life, characters in the book change from being good to evil and vise-versa - a serious topic to discuss to readers. Besides that, Lemony Snicket (the author) makes references to various famous writers and their words through the Verse Fluctuation Declaration poem-involving V.F.D. code (similar to Aunt Josephine's and the Quagmires') and the submarine's name and uniform. Even though it is fiction, I would not doubt that A Series of Unfortunate Events will someday become a book required in many schools. They are simply so well-written with suspense, humor, mystery, and a bit of drama! (By the way, my review`s title speaks the truth).

5 out of 5 stars How Could You Not Like It.......2007-08-03

If you are reading this series you obviously like the books. The author hasn't disspointed you with this one. Another creepy amazing little story about the 3 children you have grown found of... another suspenseful ending.... a must read.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE!.......2007-07-23

This audio version of the Lemony Snicket book, Grim Grotto, is excellent. Tim Curry reads and he does different voices for the characters and there is music which is catchy and fun, one song for each book (I also recommend getting the CD, Tragic Treasury by the Gothic Archies). Only get this if you like the series. Start with Book 1, A Bad Beginning. Not all audiobooks in the series are read by Tim Curry, but I think 11 of them are.

As the Kraken rises from the deep, putting the future of the islanders in jeopardy, Emily makes a desperate attempt to save them. Book Description

The aim of Cooperative Games on Combinatorial Structures is to analyze conflict situations in which two or more players can make coalitions and obtain prizes and penalties. This approach to situations of competition and cooperation was given in the seminal treatise by John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern, Theory of Games and Economic Behavior. Cooperative game theory has succeeded in providing many applications of game theory.
In this volume, games defined on combinatorial structures will be analyzed, i.e. a set system over a set of players. In many situations the author will work in a closure space. Examples of closure operators are the spanning operator of linear algebra and all convex hull operators.
Chapters 1-4 constitute a review of mathematical concepts from Cooperative Game Theory, Graph Theory, Linear and Integer Programming, Combinatorial Optimization, Discrete Convex Analysis and Computational Complexity. The table of contents is a short guide to the topics and methods covered in this book. In Chapters 11 and 12, several notebooks are presented with the system Mathematica by Wolfram in the contexts of the packages DiscreteMath (Skiena) and Cooperative (Carter). There will also be found in the book several research projects. These are intended to offer new ideas that the reader should consider with caution.
This book will be of interest to graduate students with some experience in game theory or mathematical programming and professional researchers in game theory, operational research and its applications in economic theory, and the political and social sciences. In addition, it will be especially useful for professionals who are interested in models for understanding and managing conflicts: management and operational research scientists, political and military scientists, and professional negotiators.

1 out of 5 stars Say's Law states that the marginal propensity to spend=1.......2005-06-10

Kates, the editor of this book, presents a collection of essays written on Say's Law by different contributors whose main manner of exposition is to present huge amounts of quotations and/or textual interpretation(and reinterpretation, followed by rereinterpretation). Each author claims that his particular mixture of quotations and interpretations is correct. All of the essays in this book suffer from the same errors as originally presented and incorporated by Kates in his 1998 book,"Say's Law and The Keynesian Revolution:How Macroeconomics Lost Its Way".I strongly recommend that a reader of this review read my more detailed review of that book. All of the essayists, when they mention or discuss Keynes's General Theory(GT;1936) summary of Say's Law in chapter 3,treat Keynes's statements in this chapter as the alpha and the omega of Keynes's treatment of Say's Law in the GT.Keynes gave a very precise mathematical description of Say's Law in chapter 19 of the GT on pp.261-263 which is totally ignored ,not only by every author in this book of collected essays, but by every economist who has written on Keynes's book over the last 65+ years. If,and only if,the marginal propensity to consume equals 1 will there be NO demand deficiency in the macroeconomy.Keynes generalizes this to include spending on investment if the capital stock is not at an optimal level-mpc+mpi=1 must occur if there is to be no involuntary unemployment in an economy.mpc equals the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goodsand mpi equals the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods.Keynes then incorporates this condition in an optimality condition that simultaneously applies to both the commodity market and the labor market using a microeconomic structure of purely competitive firms and industries seeking to maximize their expected economic profits:w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi).Unless mpc+mpi=1 holds,it is impossible to clear the labor market and reach a stable equilibrium. The result will be a permanent disequilibrium in the labor market and an unemployment equilibrium in the commodity market.Attempts to cut the money wage will simply make the unemployment problem worse.I recommend that a reader of this review purchase a copy of Keynes's GT instead of buying a book where each of the authors demonstrates a lack of mathematical literacy.
