2 out of 5 stars Poorly Written and Unclear.......2001-01-10

Obviously patched together from topics written over a period of time, this book is not cohesive nor understandable. Mills doesn't spend any words developing his topics nor explaning the development. Spend your resources on Hamilton's classic and great definative bible, Time Series Analysis instead.

        5 out of 5 stars it's a terrific book for non-linear time series analysis.......2000-04-06

This is a very compact, practical book. It edits in a very readable way. What I like it most is that it contributes to non-linear time series analysis a lot, whereas not too many other time series related books do. The real data in the appendix can be downloaded and played around by the readers. You will really have a great time to read it.

          Book Description

Nonlinear Modelling of High Frequency Financial Time Series Edited by Christian Dunis and Bin Zhou In the competitive and risky environment of today's financial markets, daily prices and models based upon low frequency price series data do not provide the level of accuracy required by traders and a growing number of risk managers. To improve results, more and more researchers and practitioners are turning to high frequency data. Nonlinear Modelling of High Frequency Financial Time Series presents the latest developments and views of leading international researchers and market practitioners, in modelling high frequency data in finance. Combining both nonlinear modelling and intraday data for financial markets, the editors provide a fascinating foray into this extremely popular discipline. This book evolves around four major themes. The first introductory section focuses on high frequency financial data. The second part examines the exact nature of the time series considered: several linearity tests are presented and applied and their modelling implications assessed. The third and fourth parts are dedicated to modelling and forecasting these financial time series.

              Book Description

Spatial fixity is one of the characteristics that distinguishes housing from most other goods and services in the economy. In general, housing cannot be moved from one part of the country to another in response to shortages or excesses in particular areas. The modelling of housing markets and the interlinkages between markets at different spatial levels - international, national, regional and urban - are the main themes of this book.
A second major theme is disaggregation, not only in terms of space, but also between households. The book argues that aggregate time-series models of housing markets of the type widely used in Britain and also in other countries in the past have become less relevant in a world of increasing income dispersion. Typically, aggregate relationships will break down, except under special conditions. We can no longer assume that traditional location or tenure patterns, for example, will continue in the future.
The book has four main components. First, it discusses trends in housing markets both internationally and within nations. Second, the book develops theoretical housing models at each spatial scale, starting with national models, moving down to the regional level and, then, to urban models. Third, the book provides empirical estimates of the models and, finally, the models are used for policy analysis. Analysis ranges over a wide variety of topics, including explanations for differing international house price trends, the causes of housing cycles, the role of credit markets, regional housing market interactions and the role of housing in urban/suburban population drift.

                Book Description

Advances in General Equilibrium Theory presents a new approach to the construction of general equilibrium models. It considers the methods that should be adapted and some of the principal subjects with which general equilibrium modeling should be concerned in order to convert it into a useful body of knowledge. The book examines from new perspectives the major questions that have concerned general equilibrium theorists during this century, including the characteristics of perfect competition, and the existence, uniqueness and stability of economic equilibrium. The author develops the concept of models as functioning systems, identifies the differences between models and equation systems, and discusses the implications of the differences between mathematical methods and economic determinacy. He demonstrates that the treatment of perfect competition has been deeply flawed, that modern general equilibrium models are not functioning systems, that many equation systems in the literature are not supported by underlying models, and that models which would justify these equations are either improbable or inconceivable. In conclusion, Professor Walker indicates how these perspectives can be used to develop a new general equilibrium model, and presents an outline of its content. Advances in General Equilibrium Theory will be of special interest to microeconomists and those interested in economic methodology and general equilibrium modeling.

Leading scholars analyze a range of specific departures from general equilibrium theory which have significant implications for the macroeconomic analysis of both developed and developing economies. Jacques Dregrave;ze considers uncertainty and incomplete markets and Nobel Laureate Robert Solow relates growth theory to the macroeconomic framework. Other issues examined are the implications for macro-policy of new research, including Joseph Stiglitz's warning on the misplaced zeal for financial market liberalization which partly engendered the East Asian and Russian crises.

                      Book Description

Macroeconomic Modelling has undergone radical changes in the last few years. There has been considerable innovation in developing robust solution techniques for the new breed of increasingly complex models. Similarly there has been a growing consensus on their long run and dynamic properties, as well as much development on existing themes such as modelling expectations and policy rules. This edited volume focuses on those areas which have undergone the most significant and imaginative developments and brings together the very best of modelling practice.
We include specific sections on (I) Solving Large Macroeconomic Models, (II) Rational Expectations and Learning Approaches, (III) Macro Dynamics, and (IV) Long Run and Closures. All of the contributions offer new research whilst putting their developments firmly in context and as such will influence much future research in the area. It will be an invaluable text for those in policy institutions as well as academics and advanced students in the fields of economics, mathematics, business and government. Our contributors include those working in central banks, the IMF, European Commission and established academics.

Computational Economic Systems: Models, Methods & Econometrics presents a selection of papers illustrating the use of new computational methods and computing techniques to solve economic problems. Part I of the volume consists of papers which focus on modelling economic systems, presenting computational methods to investigate the evolution of behavior of economic agents, techniques to solve complex inventory models on a parallel computer and an original approach for the construction and solution of multicriteria models involving logical conditions. Contributions to Part II concern new computational approaches to economic problems. We find an application of wavelets to outlier detection. New estimation algorithms are presented, one concerning seemingly related regression models, a second one on nonlinear rational expectation models and a third one dealing with switching GARCH estimation. Three contributions contain original approaches for the solution of nonlinear rational expectation models.

                            Book Description

The purpose of this book is to present the available methodologies for the solution of large-scale macroeconometric models. This work reviews classical solution methods and introduces more recent techniques, such as parallel computing and nonstationary iterative algorithms.
The development of new and more efficient computational techniques has significantly influenced research and practice in macroeconometric modeling. This volume supplies practitioners and researchers with both a general presentation of numerical solution methods and specific discussions about particular problems encountered in the field.
The work is organized into five chapters. Solution techniques for linear and nonlinear systems are reviewed and a graph-theoretical approach to perform this analysis is introduced. A model simulation on parallel computers of large-scale macroeconometric models is also described. Finally, a theoretical framework of rational expectation models is presented.

                              Book Description

The Foundation of Paul Samuelson's Revealed Preference Theory was originally published over two decades ago and is widely viewed as a classic within the philosophy of economics and a tour de force against revealed preference. The book critically examined the research programme carried out by the Nobel Prize winner Paul Samuelson on the revealed preference approach to the theory of consumer behavior as well as challenging two essential premises; firstly that the programme has been completed and secondly that the various contributions of Samuelson are mutually consistent.

This text contains a new preface by Wong, in which he provides a detailed insight into the origins of his pioneering text, and a new introduction from Philip Mirowski, analyzing the impact The foundation of Paul Samuelson's Revealed preference Theory has had on the discipline of economics as well as explaining why it remains core reading for economists today.

This defining statement of economic method will beof interest to economists everywhere.
