5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-08-16

I just placed order for the book having read through the content online. Just reading through the content alone gave me assurance that it's gonna be a fantastic book.

5 out of 5 stars This will become a primary reference source on your book shelf.......2007-07-17

I bought this text to help me bone up on electronics as part of my HAM Radio advocation. I did not expect such a complete work. As I said in the title you will use this as a reference for years to come. I feel like I got more than my monies worth!

5 out of 5 stars I've read this book more than once........2007-07-01

This is a great introduction to electronics. If you're just starting out in electronics this book would make a great companion to your texts.

Clear simple explainations actually make it a fun read. You can easily read this one cover to cover.

My background is in electrical/computer engineering (graduated from Purdue Cal in 1996).

4 out of 5 stars Learned a shocking amount.......2006-11-23

I used this book to learn basic electronics so I could pass an employment test for an open position at my work. I combined this book with a college textbook to learn what I needed to know. This book successfully compresses all the major ideas of electronics into tidy chapters. I found this book easy to read and learn concepts from. However, it fell short on circuit analysis, so I turned to my textbook for that.

5 out of 5 stars Good for beginners..........2006-09-26

I have a BS in Electrical Engineering. I have been out of school for a while and just started graduate school. Rather than dig back into my old text books I thought I should start slow, something to get my brain working again.

Well if you're like me I definitely would not recommend it. You forget a lot out of school, but not that much...

However, as I read it, I think it would be an awesome book for someone who is 1) Considering engineering 2) About to start engineering 3) Engineering manager who deals with EEs a lot but has no EE background

I kind of wish I had picked it up before I started my degree. It gives you just enough to not bore you.

3 out of 5 stars Stuck halfways..........2006-01-02

This is book is mainly concerned with the theory of electronics, and presents it without getting bogged down in advanced math. However, it does not really explain things - most of it reads like a summary of a more detailed book or an article from an encyclopedia - very dry. Also, I found it rather brief on the practical aspects - here, you will not learn how to read schematics, understand why components are where they are, and take educated guess at how to adapt a circuit for your needs.
In this sense, it is not a practical beginners' book. In my opinion, if you are serious about theory, this is not the book for you, and if you want to do practical projects, you will not find anything here.

5 out of 5 stars I Got a job.......2005-12-23

I studied this book several times. You really need more than one time through the book (or at least I did) for the concepts to sink in. It is very dense with information. However eventually the concepts stuck and when I interviewed for a tech job I got it. I guarantee that without this book I wouldn't have gotten it. Thanks a bunch Stan!

3 out of 5 stars A great book for junior high students, or... .......2005-11-12

I am taking a college level course in EE and bought this book in hopes of deciphering some of my cryptic Hambley text. I think this book was quite a bit low-level for my needs, but it would be an excellent intro for a junior high school student. This book assumes absolutely no knowledge of Physics, or really math for that matter. The chapter questions are all multiple choice and very basic conceptual questions. But, it does touch on a lot of topics, giving a nice broad view of the field. I give this book 2 stars for my needs, but I rated it 3 stars because I think it is probably very good for someone who has no knowledge of basic Physics.

                    Book Description

Since the late 1990s, an essential shift has taken place in the pattern of private sector financial flows to developing countries. Debt flows have fallen sharply, while equity flows--primarily in the form of foreign direct investment--have remained comparatively robust. The shift from debt to equity ought to diminish the volatility of developing countries' external finance and improve their access to technology, markets, and management expertise. However, much more needs to be done to put development finance on a stable basis.

The report finds that an actual global business cycle has emerged with the continuing integration of developing countries into global production, trade, and financial flows. Economic conditions in rich countries now tend to be mirrored in developing countries through strengthened trade links, just-in-time logistics, and stronger financial relations with affiliates and suppliers in middle-income countries.

Global Development Finance 2003 is unique in its depth of coverage of the issues related to international development finance. By putting all development-related flows in a consistent framework, the publication will allow government officials, economists, investors, financial consultants, academics, bankers, and the entire development community to better understand, manage, and promote the key challenges of financing development.

This volume, Global Development Finance 2003, I: Analysis and Statistical Appendix, is the World Bank's annual review of recent trends in and prospects for financial flows to developing countries. It also contains the World Bank's projections of the global outlook in view of the current global geopolitical uncertainties.

To see information about the complete two-volume set of this publication (which includes data tables) see ISBN 0-8213-5429-9. This publication is also available in CD-ROM format (single-user ISBN 0-8213-5430-2 and multiple-user ISBN 0-8213-5431-0).

                      Book Description

Macroeconomics tries to describe and explain the economywide movement of prices, output, and unemployment. The field has been sharply divided among various schools, including Keynesian, monetarist, new classical, and others. It has also been split between theorists and empiricists. Ray Fair is a resolute empiricist, developing and refining methods for testing theories and models. The field cannot advance without the discipline of testing how well the models approximate the data. Using a multicountry econometric model, he examines several important questions, including what causes inflation, how monetary authorities behave and what are their stabilization limits, how large is the wealth effect on aggregate consumption, whether European monetary policy has been too restrictive, and how large are the stabilization costs to Europe of adopting the euro. He finds, among other things, little evidence for the rational expectations hypothesis and for the so-called non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment (NAIRU) hypothesis. He also shows that the U.S. economy in the last half of the 1990s was not a "new age" economy.

                      Book Description

Developments in theories of financial markets and institutions, using the tools of the economics of uncertainty and of contracts, as well as results in game theory, have, over the last two decades, constituted an exciting and burgeoning field of research. This collection of readings draws together highlights of the 'second generation' literature in this area, emphasizing the theoretical, institutional, and policy-oriented regulatory implications of some of the key modelling techniques in the field. The collection divides into seven sections covering the monitoring role of banks and other intermediaries; liquidity demand and the role of banks and the government; bank runs and financial crises; bank regulation; inter-bank competition and bank--firm relationships; comparative financial systems; and imperfect credit markets and the macroeconomy. Each section comprises four articles previously published in top-ranking economics and finance journals, plus a discussion by a prominent scholar, who provides a synthesis and critique of the literature, and suggests promising directions for future research and application of results.

This book is a nice mix of intuitive explanation and rigorously proved results. It gives a very good overview of the issues involved and can form a useful tool for a researcher in this area. Not only does it tell the state of the art, but a perceptive researcher can also identify areas of future research.
                      Overall, a great reference.

                        Book Description

This book relates the literatures of finance, industrial economics and investment to the theoretical framework of the "credit view." First, banks' decisions concerning their assets are seen as at least as relevant as their decisions concerning their liabilities. Second, securities and bank credit are highly imperfect substitutes. The interactions between real and financial sectors are analyzed from the point of view of the industrial firm, in a model where the investment and financial decisions of the firm are taken simultaneously.

                          Book Description

This is a textbook designed for senior undergraduate courses in monetary economics, advanced macroeconomics, or macroeconomic policy. Students will feel comfortable with this material if they have completed an intermediate course in macroeconomics, relying on one of the more demanding texts in this field. The prime focus of the book is on the role of money in the macroeconomy and on the place of monetary policy as an instrument for controlling inflation and unemployment. There are only three important macrovariables that are features: the rate of inflation, the interest rate, and output or income. Behavioural relationships in the goods, money, and labor markets determine these variables, using only the now common IS-LM-AS model. The model is not ideological, but opposing views of the efficiacy of stabilization policy are allowed to confront each other. There is a great deal of emphasis on relating the theoretical propositions to recent Canadian and U.S. macroeconomic performance. To expose students to diversity of experience, both countries receive equal treatment, one to serve as an example of a closed economy and the other as an example of an open economy. The book relies mostly on verbal and diagrammatical exposition; equations are used to show why and how curves shift in the diagrams. Also, numerical examples are provided in ‘boxes’ at appropriate places in the text, and exercises are given at the end of most chapters. A booklet containing answers to these exercises is available to instructors on request to the author.

From the supplier: This paper analyzes the relationship between oil price shocks and postwar U.S. business cycle fluctuations. We develop a generalized Markov switching model of output that includes a measure of net real oil price increases and examine the capabilities of this variable to generate shifts in the mean of GDP growth and to predict transitions between dichotomous growth phases. The results indicate that while the behavior of oil prices has been a contributing factor to the mean of low-growth phases of output, movements in oil prices generally have not been a principal determinant in the historical incidence of these phases. From the supplier: This paper investigates wage contracting in the macroeconomy. We derive an orthogonality condition to test for effects of long-term contracting based upon the Generalized-Method-of-Moments estimator. To examine the viability of wage contracting within the macroeconomic structure, we specify and estimate a Fischer-type model. Tests for multiperiod, nonindexed contracts in determining the aggregate nominal wage rate generate mixed results. While the test for overidentifying restrictions suggests a weak effect, findings from an orthogonality test indicate significance. The study provides support for a New Keynesian macroeconomic model and some evidence for wage inflexibility due to contracting. (Printed by permission of the publisher.)

This important new book from a group of Keynesian, but nonetheless technically-oriented economists explores one of the dominant paradigms in financial economics: the `intertemporal general equilibrium approach'.

With the rise of violence against gay people, the "don't ask, don't tell" military policy and the homophobic rhetoric of the right-wing, sometimes there doesn't seem to be very much fun about gay and lesbian life. That is, until you read Mary Dugger's The History of Lesbian Hair. Dugger has a sense of humor that knows no boundaries -- from instructions to how to build you own lesbian (complete with Birkinstocks) to how to collect right-wing demagogue trading cards to how all lesbian haircuts have evolved from Patsy Cline's original 1950s do -- she is unafraid of poking fun at everyone from right-wing hate-mongering to the dyke in the bar with a bad attitude. Dugger has a sense of humor, and she knows how to use it.

                                      Book Description

In The History of Lesbian Hair, Mary Dugger delivers an unrelentingly hilarious view of the modern world. The redoubtable Ms. D. offers an uproarious array of illustrated essays, diagrams, and short takes, subdivided into Life ("The Downside to Lesbian Chic", how to "Build Your Own Lesbian", "So You Want to Be a Straight Girl", and the ultimate definition of children - "pets with thumbs"), Liberty ("Far Right Trading Cards", the ethics of outing, and an irrefutable argument proving that if homosexuals really do make up only 1.5 percent of the population, then every gay person in Chicago spends an average of $13.11 on liquor every single day), and The Pursuit of Happiness (the birth of the indomitable alter ego Marie DuGuerre, and her ongoing search for love, romance, and a decent vacation).

                                      4 out of 5 stars Very entertaining.......2006-01-29

This book was way worth the money. My friend and I both read it and many times laughed out loud at the clever remarks and anecdotes. This was recommended to me from someone else and I'm so glad I bought the book. Very funny discussion of the Far Right Christian worriers.

1 out of 5 stars Not funny at all.......2001-06-02

Personally this book probably only got one laugh out of me... and that was the personal ads she didn't even write. It was so negative and stereotypical... it was actually kind of depressing to me. Maybe I'm too young to get this stuff or maybe its just not my kind of humor (like... FUNNY humor) but I put it back in the box and returned it the same day I got it in the mail.

5 out of 5 stars Funny as Hell.......2000-01-28

I read this book with my grrlfriend and we found oursleves laughing so much that we would have to stop reading to control ourselves. This book tackles every stereotype out there and makes it funny, from that ever so popular 'pasty vegan' color to the road signs in the back. I recommend buying at least two copies of this book, one for yrself, and one for yr closest friend, they will love you forever.

This book MIGHT have been funny, years ago. True, it got a laugh or two out of me, but it's really just composed of the SAME tired jokes. Lesbians and softball. Lesbians and hair. PC lesbians. The Religions Right. Yawn.

The sad thing is that she doesn't even present the same old jokes in an amusing way, she just slaps up some clip art and goes "Look! Fat lesbians playing softball!" "Gay men acting like queens!" "Them wacky straight people!"

                                      Ha, ha, ha.

Everything in the book gives off a very negative tone. Not angry and interesting, just bored, apathetic, and non-satisfied. I wasn't left feeling amused, I was left felt feeling disgruntled.

And the book has no form -- it's as if the author just decided to slap it together at 3 AM. It's just a series of page-length "articles" thrown together in a heap. It's tiny -- a slim paperback, but even thinner in content, since the clipart and layout takes up most of each page. The author claims that this makes the book enjoyable, but it just seems like an excuse to create an entire book out of very little content.

Personally, I wish I hadn't wasted my money. If you want to read this book, I suggest you find a friend who owns it and borrow it, or just read it at her house, if you have twenty minutes.

5 out of 5 stars precise, intelligent and knock em dead funny.......1999-09-20

just finnished this book (at work) and had to be excused to contain myself. this is definately a "must have" for anyone who can quit analizing themselves (and others) for a brief moment and just laugh. Dugger pokes fun at literally everyone, from dog lovers to Far Right Christian Evangelists. chances are, you personally know someone from each group she examines, it might even be yourself. put this on your x-mas list. the only downfall...it was too short.
