5 out of 5 stars Excellent on intuition and good preparation for Greene.......2004-02-03

This book is very good at giving brand new students of econometrics the intuition behind concepts. At the same time, it does not ignore the mathematics (calculus and linear algebra) and thus it is a good preparation for Greene.
One thing I don't like about this book is notation. For example, the book refers to the mean as beta instead of mu. I do prefer Gujarati?s notation much better.
It would also be very nice to have an update of this great textbook since it was written in 1993.

      Thank you,

4 out of 5 stars The best undergraduate econometrics book.......2002-04-14

Instills understanding by slowly going through derivations and principles, while at the same time motivating econometric analysis by referring to economic situations where it can be used. Much better than Gujarati (which tends to be a "cookery book" rather than giving an integrated treatment).

The only weakness of the book is that it focusses almost exclusively on estimation under the assumption that error terms are identicallly and independently distributed (iid). However, all other undergraduate econometric textbooks (and a lot of graduate ones too!) display this preoccupation, so Griffiths et al are no worse than their rivals.

An update to this book would also be good, as it's nearly 10 years old now.

However, its good points far outweigh these weaknesses.

5 out of 5 stars Good applied econometrics for undergraduates.......2000-04-24

This book is excellent for beginners in econometrics. It is particuarly useful for people not wanting to know all the mathematics ( algebra and matrix approach) behind econometrics. Students doing term papers find it very practical as they want to know how to go from theoretical econometrics to empirical econometrics.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Bridge to Greene.......1999-08-13

This is a great beginner's textbook. Whereas some, like Greene, are going to be too hard for some beginners, and others like Gujarati are far too basic, this book strikes an excellent balance. It's best feature is all the worked examples is gives you, including the raw data used, allowing you to enter the data into a statistical package and make sure you get the same result. This is a great confidence builder!

4 out of 5 stars Good book but maybe too ..........1999-04-16

This is a good book for beginners. I found the idea of explaining the whole process by examples really interesting but if you're gonna go deep in econometrics maybe this is not your book. It takes you by the hand and that's a great thing for the ones who don't know this great science and after all I did appreciate this book!

              Description:
This paper develops a Bayesian filtering strategy for estimating trend growth in the new economy. The filtering strategy involves three elements. Consumption data are used to help disentangle changes in the trend from ordinary cyclical movements. Drifting parameters are introduced to let the economy's law of motion evolve, and Bayesian methods are used to estimate the drifting parameters. The evidence points to a modest net increase in trend growth over the last decade. In per capita terms, the economy may grow more rapidly than in the 1970s, but probably not as fast as in the 1950s or 1960s.

                  Description:
This paper shows that for standard calibration of the [Calvo, G., 1983. Staggered prices in a utility-maximizing framework. Journal of Monetary Economics 12, 983-998] model of price stickiness and under strategic complementarity, the optimal price is only defined for trend inflation rates of under 5.5%. This threshold is much lower than previously recognized, and below the average inflation rate in several industrialized countries. Furthermore, over the range for which the optimal price is defined, the slope of the New Keynesian Phillips curve is decreasing in trend inflation. That contradicts the stylized fact that the Phillips curve is flatter in low-inflation environments. Allowing the Calvo price signal to vary with trend inflation can help avoid these implications.

                    Book Description

"This volume does exactly what its title says: it acquaints with 'New Trends in Macroeconomics'. More specifically, it contains eleven chapters covering different aspects of modern macroeconomics: short-run fluctuations, long-run growth, monetary economics, international finance, macroeconometrics and complex dynamics. All chapters break new grounds in their area while at the same time remain very accessible. The book contains also an excellent mixture of new techniques, interesting applications and methodological arguments. A valuable reference for both practitioners and researchers, it will also be of great help to graduate students seeking to bring themselves to the frontier of one of the most fascinating fields of economics." From the author: After the EU enlargement in 2004, there is a clear commitment of the EU and the new member states to aim at an enlargement of the euro zone within the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) as well. This might have significant effects on the "old" EMU, the "new members," and even on the global economy. The present paper analyzes some macroeconomic effects and particularly the impact on the effects of stabilization policies when switching to an enlarged euro zone under different assumptions about fiscal and monetary policy regimes in Europe and under alternative types of economic shocks. Also, the implications for the US of different European monetary regimes are evaluated. The results suggest that economic benefits for all countries are rather small. For the Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs), even disadvantages may dominate. (JEL E52, E63, C50, C70)

4 out of 5 stars A romp over the globe and through the mind........2005-01-05

Perelman is one of America's great Twentieth Century prose stylists--the quintessential New Yorker columnist when that magazine set literary style. The texture of his writing is obviously unique--clang association abetted by immense vocabulary and an eye that never forgot anything it noticed. But there's more going on. What we have here is a mind in the act of making the mind, a lively intellect using everything as fodder for the imagination, even imagination itself. Sure, there's a heap of artist performing FOR himself, with reader as voyeur, but it's a first-rate artist transforming reality into something more satisfying than fact. His writing parodies the magazine "short story" form. And it's convoluted, to the point of menace. But these willful distortions make the essence of his experience incarnate by taking its transactions to the level of the truly bizarre, like Jonathan Winters or Hunter Thompson. This isn't easy reading, but its method--stimulus for its own sake--is intense beyond belief. And there's value in it as history, given that his circumnavigation happened in 1947, two years after WWII. The world wasn't the same, and he noticed. More importantly, if he had it to do again, he wouldn't. His writing is caviar: a little is a treat, a plateful sickens.

I read this book decades ago, and I can still laugh when I remember it. If you want to laugh at/with city folks who go to the country, this is a great one.

The drawings of Al Hirschfeld perfectly compliment S.J. Perelman's writing. The work of both men shows what astute observers they were of human behavior. With this work, and in their other collaborations, they draw caricatures that are not one-dimensional, and are instead more like snapshots of the human condition, flaws and all.

S.J. Perelman's writing is best described as finely crafted comedy. And what that means is that he loves words, he loves wordplay and he loves metaphor and Mr. Perelman works hard to share that love with his readers. Do yourself a favor. 5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, totally un-PC wit.......1999-11-10

One of the funniest travelogues I've read; laugh-out-aloud-as-you-read writing. Written in the mid-40s, before the advent of political correctness, no one, irrespective of culture, race or country is spared his biting, sarcastic wit. Brilliant narrative with fantastic vocabulary. A must read. I now have to get my hands on Eastward Ha!

                                        Book Description

Dad was having a mid-life crisis. His teenage sons wanted to avoid summer jobs. The solution? Ride across America on bicycles. They set out from the east coast in June, loaded down and looking for adventure. They rode straight into the Appalachian Mountains, and into the hottest summer in recorded history. Sure, the pioneers struggled with starvation, disease, and wilderness. But did they have to pedal a loaded bike all day against the wind, wash in the sheriff’s bathroom, and camp in 90 degree heat on the courthouse square surrounded by jacked-up Chevies?
