If a right wing anti-Castro Cuban wrote a book called the "People's History of the American Left" you would read a tale where anyone with left political viewpoints would be bloodthirsty Stalinists, Corrupt Brezhnevites, and egomaniac Castroites. Even though many were as such, a more balanced look will reveal many of America' most progressive social movements were founded by Leftwing organizations, the labor union movement in the late 1800's, Women's suffrage, and most recently the Environmentalist movement. Zinn work is a blame America for everything wrong in the world book and focuses on the negative and dark moments in American history which are only a small part of our National history and tries to present it as the story of America.

Zinn disappoints with a biased and narrow accounting of the United States' history. Despite the one-sided slant on key events (and much information not presented), this book is worth reading if only for the volume of factual stories and events gleamed over by conventional texts.

                      The New Labour government is attempting to liberalize and deregulate British television to meet the needs of a digital future. Its policies are set to transform the environment in which both public service and commercial broadcasters currently operate. This activity appears to stand in stark contrast to the Labour Party's former opposition to a commercial television system and its indifference towards innovations in the field of electronic media. With the exception of the Open University, the party has not been directly associated with any of the major developments in broadcasting, all of which have occurred under Conservative administrations.
                      By drawing on extensive archive material and interviews with key participants, the author argues that Labour has intervened in all the main debates concerning British broadcasting and has produced a wide range of proposals for the reform, modernization and consolidation of television structures in the UK.
                      The book examines the party's divided response to the development of commercial television in the 1950s and assesses the impact of Harold Wilson's governments on television in the 1960s. It concludes with an evaluation of the role of television in the emergence of New Labour and a critique of the Blair government's record concerning television developments, the book suggests that Labour has been a vigorous but ultimately unreliable advocate of television reform.

                      Opening a dining establishment is complex. There are many different things that need to be taken into consideration from food costs to training of employees. For those who have never had a restaurant before, the training of employees could be a little intimidating, especially when it comes to those who interact with the customers and whose service could make or break the business, the wait staff. This book takes the bewilderment out of hiring and training these very important people.

                      The book is comprehensive and follows a logical pattern which eases the reader into the business almost effortlessly. It is an all inclusive book which details different jobs which make up the wait staff from hosting to bussing. Most of the book is centered on service of the tables though. It explains everything from how to set the table to presenting the check at the end of the meal.

                      There is a special section on how to deal with the youngest of the customers as well as important issues which the customer does not see such as side work and dealing with customer complaints and the difficult customer. There are even tips on laws that regulate the industry such as alcohol and IRS laws. As with any other job in the restaurant, safety and sanitation is also a very important part. Taking the complexity out of hiring and training of these employees is bound to help everyone out.

                                      Written by the Working Party on Culture Media, of the International Committee on Food Microbiology and Hygiene, this is a handy reference for microbiologists wanting to know which media to use for the detection of various groups of microbes in food, and how to check their performance.


                                      The first part comprises reviews, written by international experts, of the media designed to isolate the major groups of microbes important in food spoilage, food fermentations or food-borne disease. The history and rationale of the selective agents, and the indicator systems are considered, as well as the relative merits of the various media. The second part contains monographs on approximately 90 of the most useful media.


                                      The first edition of this book has been frequently quoted in standard methods, especially those published by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the European Standards Organisation (CEN), as well as in the manuals of companies manufacturing microbiological media. In this second edition, almost all of the reviews have been completely rewritten, and the remainder revised. Approximately twelve monographs have been added and a few deleted. This book will be useful to anyone working in laboratories examining food - industrial, contract, medical, academic or public analyst, as well as other microbiologists, working in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and clinical (medical and veterinary) areas - particularly with respect to quality assurance of media and methods in relation to laboratory accreditation.

                                        This is yet another example of someone publishing "true" facts, before checking on their authenticity. Sometimes I wonder if editors even exist anymore for a number of newspapers and books, given the number of false stories touted as true. Regarding this particular book, you can check out its stories at www.snopes.com, which prints the research and checkable sources for each of their "is it true or not" determinations re urban legends such as those contained in this book. (E.g., the one in the book re someone who strapped a super-powerful engine to the top of their car, ignited it, and crashed into a cliff; FALSE, and confirmable as false EASILY by checking the sources listed by snopes.)

                                        Save your money and don't buy this book, unless you just want to amuse yourself with some made up stories. (Some people seem to LOVE that, given that they forward e-mails of stories such as those in this book, without bothering to do even the easiest research to see if the story is true.)

                                        2 out of 5 stars Tall Tales---Mostly Not True.......2002-02-27

                                        This book is jammed with stories drenched in IRONY...more than humor. Few (if any) stories are true. Some of the tales are recognizably taken from news stories, but were so greatly embellished as to be mostly fiction. The stories are oddball, but disappointing overall. Few envoke even a smile. The author and publisher insult their reader's intelligence by labeling these preposterous tall tales as true.

                                        Take the "but True Stories" with a grain of salt... Many of these are urban legends and there is not supporting material to prove that anything in this book is true. A better book is the Darwin Awards.

                                        The cover of this book made me think it was for children, so I ordered one for my 12-year-old for Christmas. I skimmed through it and thought the stories were very funny. However, the last chapter is devoted to sex stories, which are also funny, but not appropriate for a kid.
