Never Tear Us Apart

They've been to the prom and signed the yearbooks. Now Brian and Michael are apart for the first time since grade school. Brian's soccer scholarship takes him to Carnegie-Mellon where he finds that he's a fresh -- if not a small -- fish in a big new pond. Meanwhile Michael, Deb, and Uncle Vic embark on the annual Novotny family vacation in the Poconos, where Michael makes some "new" friends. When the trip is cut short because Vic doesn't feel well, Michael learns that his uncle has AIDS and that their family must come together more closely than ever. Soon classes begin for both boys, and new passions and adventures put their friendship to the test. Lindsay, a pretty, talented art major at Carnegie-Mellon, is quickly becoming a fixture in Brian's life, and Emmett, whom Michael met at Babylon, becomes a good friend outside the club too. As sex becomes more than experimentation for both, Brian and Michael struggle with jealousy, homophobia, the realities of HIV, and finding a place of their own as they find their way back to each other.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for QAF Fans.......2005-10-27

I read all 3 books in this series in a week. For anyone who knows me that really fast. I'm not much of a reader but I couldn't put these books down. I loved how the authors stayed so true to the characters in the show. Although there were a few tiny differences, you would have to be a hard core QAF fan to notice. I would recommend to anyone that wants to read these book to watch the show first. I feel that seeing the show first gave me a better feel for the characters and made me enjoy the books more. Oh yea, and coming from a straight female's perspective, the sex scenes are pretty hot!

I am a big fan of "Queer As Folk" -- enough of a fan to buy and read a novelization like "Never Tear Us Apart." But I'm not enough of a fan to claim these books are anything more than a rather pathetic attempt to milk fans out of their money. And, yet, it works: I have bought and read two of them, this one and "Every Nine Seconds." And I'll probably read the third at some point too.

Why don't these books quite work as stand alone novels? Because "Queer As Folk" is, above all, a visual show. It's about good looking people, music, and memorable performances. None of this comes through in "Never Tear Us Apart." The plot is breezy enough to keep a fan reading, but the book lacks a single memorable line of dialogue (the show is known for its one-liners) and the plot seems like a retread of much better episodes. You will have to have a pretty strong visual imagination to conjure up what the author is trying to illustrate -- he isn't a very gifted writer.

So, why read these at all? For two reasons. One, they provide something the show does not: a narrative about what these characters were like before the show started (this one features Brian, Mikey, Lindsay and Emmett -- who knew?-- in college). For another, they serve as additional entertainment if you're looking for something beyond the show itself. And, occasionally, they are clever. In "Nine Seconds" Brian stops in a convenience store and encounters six year old Justin, holding his teddy bear named Gus. (Fans of the show will understand why that's cute -- Justin eventually names Brian's son Gus.) In "Never Tear Us Apart" Todd, a inside joke type of character from the show, gets a back story, and we meet Lindsay's first girlfriend, who is mentioned in a memorable way in season two. The "background info" quality to these books is fun.

If any of this sounds appealing, you might like these books. I think they are strictly for diehards.

This book, like the first (Every Nine Soconds) is and interesting look at the younger, before the Tv series of the charactors and it stays true to there identities. Brian the one always in control, Michael; the hopless romantic. So innocent and fragil and Emmitt so colourful and lively. I can't wait to read the next Book (Always Have, Always Will). Hope there are more on the way.

4 out of 5 stars Old and New Characters with Different Storylines.......2004-05-23

This book is just as good as the first. I read "Every Nine Seconds" in the bookstore and found it interesting as to know why Brian is the boss of everyone and Michael is forever young. This time the boys are separated going to different schools. Michael is adjusting to community college, coping with his uncle's illness, experiencing romance, and making new friends. Brian, meanwhile, is having the time of his life joining a fraternity (which I can't believe!), playing soccer, and screwing anything that wears pants.
Newcomer to Pittsburgh Emmett Honeycutt brings a great amount of color in the novel with his Southern charm. He is a great friend to Michael when Brian isn't around. Lindsay appears in the novel as a straight lady who can get any man's attention.
Quinn Brockton sheds some light on the characters of the cable series bringing forth their personalities and differences and how they come together.
I can't wait for the next book.

Like "Every Nine Seconds," this latest installment in the younger lives of the Queer as Folk characters follows suit with the personalities and characteristics we love so much. It delves into the lives of the characters as they grow up together and meet one another in the first year of college. The author has done an excellent job in capturing the spirits of Michael, Brian, Lindsay, Emmett, and Deb. A must-read for any devoted Queer as Folk fan!

        This is a unique and interesting business travel guide and gives a lot of value for its pocket size. As a former military attache to Japan, I was impressed by tips it offered in areas that even seasoned Japanophiles struggle with such as the fine art of giving presents and expert dining etiquette that goes way beyond the standard business cards and bows. The reader gets a rare peek into the minds and hearts of the Japanese people. It's also a sociological and cultural study in value-shifts that are occurring in today's Japan and business changes in foreign investment policies and deregulation. A lot of emphasis has been placed on behavior and language in interpersonal relations, even to the extent of how many seconds to wait before responding to a question! Clear and easy-to-use charts are an excellent feature. The book also begins with a humorous quiz on Japanese famous figures, history and food, and shows how we really do need this new book and the information it provides. Examples of advice are: "When you get in trouble, apologize profusely" and what to do if you're staying near an active volcano. This guide is easy to read and helps us understand the Japanese character and way of thinking. It's also very enjoyable. We loved it! Thank you Brian and Sue!

        Because of my work as an interculturalist, I enjoy reading various books on cultural preparation for Americans, et al, going overseas. This book is by far the best quality to prepare a business traveller or even a tourist for life in Japan. It is concise, yet informative, and supplies plenty of pertinent anecdotes which assist the reader in understanding values which we, as Americans, typically find too foreign to comprehend.

                While somewhat useful as a general guide to London restaurants and prices, this directory would serve the visitor better with some subjective ratings of the usual one to five star variety. Most tourists want to know where the good grub is at a good price. Aside from a couple of references, this book doesn't really tell you.

                    Carol is such a wonderfully intelligent and personal human being(too bad she is a republican, just kidding).

                    This book is such a funny addition to the book shelf, I pick it up when I'm having a down day, and it can pick me up.

                    carol roesslor's book is both humurous and enlightening. it shows, quite simply, that even our highest leaders are fallible. this book doesnt insult or take any political bias, both parties are well covered. not a very long book tho, just under 200 quotes which one quote in large font per page. i found that at least half of them could easily be found online, and that i'd already heard about 1/4 of them. overall it's a good book, though i wouldn't pay regular price to own it.

                    LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! Veteran Wisconsin politician Carol Roessler collected some of the dumbest, most stupid quotes from politicians -- in other words, typical things politicians say every day -- and put them in a small but potent volume. There's a section on Clinton Speak, George Bush Sr., dumb Kennedy quotes and lots of anonymous ones. She is even gutsy enough to quote herself ("I caught that out of the corner of my ear.."). I'm a former journalist who is now a fulltime ventriloquist, and I can tell you that in nearly 20 years freelancing oversea in Asia and Europe and working as a reporter on American newspapers I covered politicians and got a LOT lot of experience dealing with dummies. This small-sized book's quotes are short, one to a page, but it's the kind of book you'll read, want to read again, and will pick it up so often it'll wear out. I've read mine often the pages are coming out -- and it is not because of shoddy production. My only reservation is: you can watch unedited Congressional press briefings, political debates, and presidential press conferences and experience similar dumb quotes "live" for FREE. But this lets you savor the pompous stupidity on your own terms, without setting a VCR or having a radio talk show host add his/her/its own dumbness on top of a stupid quote. NO JOKE: I roared out loud when I read it, read it until it fell apart -- and give Roessler a LOT of credit for her talent in selecting idiotic quotes and her ability to include herself. The edition I own was published in 1999 and with a new White House administration and new Congressioinal Democratic/Republican and Independent politicos she could easily expand her edition...to maybe several volumes....

                    This is a funny book. The quotes Roessler has collected, both attributed and unattributed, demonstrate clearly the abysmal depths of confusion, ignorance and raw stupidity of some of our country's leaders. Some of course are simply faux pas, and no doubt some are tongue in cheek, but you will laugh your way through the book. Guaranteed. And of course, that is the point of the book.

                    Some of the things it misses, like the Secretary of Defense who couldn't pronounce the word 'nuclear,' (he called it nook-you-ler), which weapons he controlled, or the Secretary of State who called espionage es-SPY-onage, or the Surgeon General who thought that "ever chile should be a wanned chile," are equally indicative of an incompetent vocabulary.

                    I won't say that it proves that the election process that produces such "leaders" is flawed, but it certainly provides strong anecdotal evidence that either the process, or the voters' judgment, or both, has placed some people of questionable intelligence in high positions of leadership. It makes one wonder if perhaps it would be well to administer some form of intelligence test on wannabe candidates for high office, with at least the same minimal requirement as the civil service qualifications required of a dog catcher.

                    But, this is a funny little book, and truly the source of some unbelievable quotes. These guys are making the laws that govern us?
