Meggie's father, Mo, has an wonderful and sometimes terrible ability. When he reads aloud from books, he brings the characters to life--literally. Mo discovered his power when Maggie was just a baby. He read so lyrically from the the book Inkheart, that several of the book's wicked characters ended up blinking and cursing on his cottage floor. Then Mo discovered something even worse--when he read Capricorn and his henchmen out of Inkheart, he accidentally read Meggie's mother in.

Meggie, now a young lady, knows nothing of her father's bizarre and powerful talent, only that Mo still refuses to read to her. Capricorn, a being so evil he would "feed a bird to a cat on purpose, just to watch it being torn apart," has searched for Meggie's father for years, wanting to twist Mo's powerful talent to his own dark means. Finally, Capricorn realizes that the best way to lure Mo to his remote mountain hideaway is to use his beloved, oblivious daughter Meggie as bait!

Cornelia Funke's imaginative ode to books and book lovers is sure to be enjoyed by fans of her breakout debut, The Thief Lord, and young readers who enjoyed the similarly themed The Great Good Thing by Roderick Townley. (Ages 10 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert

Book Description

Suddenly, Meggie is smack in the middle of the kind of adventure she has only read about in books. Meggie must learn to harness the magic that has conjured this nightmare. For only she can change the course of the story that has changed her life forever. This is INKHEART--a timeless tale about books, about imagination, about life. Dare to read it aloud.

Have you ever wanted to have your favourite characters from your favourite books alive in our world? In Inkheart, that's exactly what happens when Mo reads aloud from books: he makes things appear from the books, while other things in our world get sucked in the books. Years ago, Mo read the evil Capricorn and his henchmen out of the book Inkheart, while his wife got trapped in the book.

Now, Capricorn comes back, looking for Mo and his 12-year old daughter Meggie and the one copy of Inkheart they possess. They must flee the evil mastermind, who wants to find Mo so he could read things for Capricorn. It's a start of a dangerous adventure! Meggie, who is the charming main character of the story, must use her wits and the support from her friends to triumph over the evil forces.

Inkheart is a lovely story that will please anybody who has a passion for books and stories. The book seems written for young adults, but it's certainly dark and dramatic enough for grown-ups as well.

5 out of 5 stars Staggeringly Imaginative.......2007-08-25

There are a few things that one needs to know before choosing this book.

This is the begining of a extremely ambitious and intricately detailed trilogy, meaning this is not a casual light read or a short one. This is not a book to read quickly, a certain investment of time is required of the reader. Not only beause of the page count, but also because of the sheer volume of information those pages contain. There is a great deal of exposition, atmospheric discription, back story and emotional reactions, which throws the pacing off in a lot of places. But it's very much worth hanging in there, as long as the reader keeps in mind what a huge job this novel has. It sets the frame work for a story that is dizzyingly vast and complicated. I admit to putting Inkheart down a couple of times, mostly beause I couldn't keep track of what was happening and needed time to reorder my brain. It never took long to pick back it back up though. The seoond half moves much smoother, and the pay off is huge. The conclusion sets up book two Inkspell beautifully. It made me glad I got both books at once cause I needed to know what happend next. if ypu like Epic story telling then this is an amazing work, it speaks to the heart of those with a passion for the fantasy genre, and echoes the feelings of those who find true joy in reading.

3 out of 5 stars Not much of an entertaining read.......2007-08-24

I enjoyed the book and found the story unique (the first I read about people reading characters ot of books). However, the more I read the less I started to care about it. It seemed to be an never ending story about the characters escaping and then getting caught again. It was frustrating and made me like the characters a little less. Dustfinger was not likeable at all and Mo was way too innoncent and trusting for his own good. I liked Meggie by the end she went from being brat to maturing at the end. My favorite character was Eliane she seemed the one with the most sense and personality, but seemed to suffer unfortunate circumstances. Overall, I liked the book, but I don't think I can ever read it again like I do with my favorite books. I think is entertaining story for the moment, but can easily be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-08-22

This book was an enjoyable read. It is somewhat long, but it is worth reading through to the end. The premise is good. I like the idea of there being a world that really exists within the pages of a book. The one criticism, if I have one, is that is is difficult to visualize some of the characters and scenes.

There is no doubt that Cornelia can tell a story. This one just happened to be to slow for me.

Just a few chapters into Inkspell, Mo (a.k.a. "Silvertongue") sagely says to his daughter, "Stories never really end, Meggie, even if the books like to pretend they do. Stories always go on. They don't end on the last page, any more than they begin on the first page." A fitting meta-observation for this, the unplanned second installment in Cornelia Funke's beloved now-trilogy.

Of course, it's that sort of earnest, almost gushing veneration of books and book-loving that made the absorbing suspense-fantasy Inkheart so wonderful in the first place, with that lit-affection getting woven integrally into the plot (Inkheart being both Funke's first book in the series, and the fictitious book within that book, authored by the frustrated Fenoglio, now trapped within the book, er, within the book. Fenoglio, perhaps not surprisingly, self-referentially wishes in Inkspell that he had written a sequel to Inkheart.) Inkspell should serve as a special treat for fans of the first book, as characters from Inkheart who have found themselves in the "real world" (if there is such a thing) find themselves read back into their own mythic, word-spun world--along with some of our favorite "real-world" characters. As with the previous book, Funke's greatest accomplishment here is telling such a rich and involving (and fun!) story, while still managing sweet, subtle commentary on the nature of words and meaning. Expect a tantalizing finale, too--as Funke says, "No reader will forgive me the ending, though, without a part three." (Ages 8 and up) --Paul Hughes

I love this book. My kids can't wait to listen to the rest of the story.

5 out of 5 stars Inkspell Rocks! .......2007-10-02

I like Inkspell because, like Inkheart, it becomes something that not many writers have attempted before: a book about books.

Inkspell is much like Funke's other books where a few people find out about magic and get caught in it. Younger children should not read this book because some characters cuss a little tiny bit; but who cares?

Thank you so much Cornelia Funke!

4 out of 5 stars Not Exactly a Page Turner.......2007-09-04

In this book, the Ink World is in trouble, the characters end up going inside the book where the author of the book hopes to straighten out the mess in which the world he created is. His attempts fail miserably resulting in the death of a character that I did not care for very much, but then the character is brought back to life through the self-sacrifice of another character. I did not care for that very much, but I suspect it is a way to set up the next book. The characters from the real world are still trapped in the fictional world, which should allow the next book to begin without having an excuse to read the characters into the story.

The second half of the book was easier to read than the first half, but I had a hard time reading it. In my opinion, the book would have been better if it was about half the length that it is, but overall it is a good book and provides more information about the Ink World than the first book did.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it..........2007-08-27

I bought Inkheart and Inkspell together on a whim, and by the conclusion of Inkheart I was glad I had, I was extremely curious about what the next volume would bring. I was not disapointed. IS. picks up shortly after the events of Inkheart, and I am happy to say that the second installment moves a good deal more briskly then it's parent novel. Those who found Inkheart over long will likely not be thrilled to find that Inkspell is fully 108 pages longer then Inkheart, which I must say was off putting at first. But for all that I couldn't put Inkspell down, The story seems to have grown up, just as Meggie is growing into herself. Much stronger development, and a more balenced ratio of backstory to current events makes IS. a much easier read then IH. And a deeper emotional core make it a far more enjoyable one. There's still a good bit of slogging through detail, and scenes that could have easily been excluded, but I found these things easy to ignore. It's simply a truely great tale.

This was an interesting and original story, however reading it took a long time. It just didn't quite grab me.

    Product Description

Meggie's father Mo has an interesting talent: when he reads aloud, things, and sometimes people, come out of their stories and into the real world! But now the evil Capricorn wants to use Mo's talents to bring himself great wealth and power. Then Meggie discovers that maybe Mo isn't the only one who can read things to life. This is an enchanting story full of adventure, suspense, and magic. The characters are vivid and delightful. Unlike many books for younger readers there is a distinct emphasis on the importance of family as seen in the close relationship between Meggie and her father. Unfortunately the author does include several instances of mild profanity which seems totally unnecessary in a children's book and is perhaps the biggest detractor from the story. Lightly magical, humorous, and fun, Inkheart will appeal to those who like adventure and fantasy, and to anyone who ever wished a story could come to life.

5 out of 5 stars By Far My Favorite Book.......2007-09-01

This is by far my favorite book of all times. Cornelia Funke is an amazing writer who I think is often times unfairly forgotten. I fell in love with all the entire cast. They really do jump out of the book and stay in your head. Dustfinger is my favorite. He is selfish but you would be to if you ripped from one world to the next. I cant wait until the final installment comes out.

Make sure to read the book excerpts at the beginning of each book!!!

    5 out of 5 stars A really good book.......2007-08-03

I read this book like two years ago (when I was 11) so I can't really remember much about it except that I really liked it.

If you're pre-teen or an early teen that likes fantasy books (like me!), then trust me and read this- I'm sure that you'll like it.

P.S. I like Harry Potter, Twilight, The Thief Lord, Eragon and Eldest...those type of books.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!!!.......2007-06-22

I am 40yrs old and I don't read. NOT AT ALL!! There was a book fair at my job and as I was looking through the books, I came across a couple of Cornelia Funke's books. The first book I bought was "The Thief Lord" (which is a good book.) After I finished reading it I enjoyed it so much that I bought "Dragon Rider" then "Inkheart" which was recommended by one of the vendors for the book fair. When I started reading Inkheart I couldn't put it down. Since I'm a slow reader, I could grasp all of the details and it takes you on a magical ride. I know kids love it but I will also recommend it for adults as well. If you want to step away from reality sometime, this book is the way to go. The characters are alive and vivid and they really catch your attention. I'm not going to give what happens away, but I think you should buy this book. Definitely a treasure. I recently bought "Inkspell" (the sequel to "Inkheart") and can't wait to get into it.

5 out of 5 stars The Masterpiece of Fantasy Stories.......2007-05-14

I LOVE this book. Everything about this book is perfect, from the style of the writing to the plot, the characters and right down to the artwork on the cover. My favorite book of all time.

    5 out of 5 stars Inkheart rocks!.......2007-04-18

Inkheart is such a good book. It was so good that it passed up my favorite book. it's all about this girl named Meggie and her father. Her father can read things out of books but later in the story so can she. This man Capricorn wants her father and will do anything to get him and if not he will settle for the second best, Meggie. Read the book to find out what happens next in full detail. It was the best book i've ever read in my life! It couldn't have been better. Well maybe but i couldn't think of any flaws. I loved it. It was exillerating and suspen ceful. I wanted to scream when they ended a chapter and it didn't have a solution to to there problem. It's a very long book (534 pages to be exact) but it wasn't that they were dragging it out well maybe. it's kind of hard to explain. it was very detailed and it never got boring. I personaly love long books but if you don't than i would still try it. Because the farther you got into it the more you wanted to read it. It's adicting, Once you start reading it you can't stop reading it, it's like drugs or cigarettes you just can't stop. it's amazing, amusing, and out of this world. It's hard to explain what the books about without telling you what happens in the end. You kind of lose yourself in the vivid descriptions and the diolauge. it just seems so real. My mom told me i could read for a half of an hour but i ended up reading till almost midnight. That's how bad it is. You get totally obsorbed in the book. i haven't read the sequel yet but i entend to. anyways as you probably guessed by now i highly recomend this book. If it was good enough to score high on me with my stingy book taste it will probably score high on you.

                Book Description

This book examines aspects of life in St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, in the early years of Russia's transformation from a Communist state to a democracy. Social relations, economics and street life in St. Petersburg changed drastically during the early 1990s. The author provides a fascinating sketch of changes to the consumer culture and the new landscape of capitalism in St. Petersburg, cultural currents in the city, changing social behaviour, and lingering tensions between old bureaucratic ways and new rules and regulations.

                    Book Description

This book authoritatively considers the phenomenon of the severe economic crises of the 1970s and 1980s, as exemplified by the combination of high inflation and negative growth in Israel and Latin America. The author analyses the common characteristics of such processes and their possible curesDSwith a detailed first-hand account of Israeli stabilization policy, and a comparative policy-oriented analysis of Latin American reforms. Professor Bruno also calls on his experience to give a preliminary evaluation of recent stabilizations and reform attempts in several East European economies. The discussion of the theoretical underpinnings of `shock' treatments provides a good example for the blending of a number of disciplines: lessons of economic history; open economy monetary and macro theory; game-theoretic applications to the theory of economic policy design (concepts such as dynamic inconsistency, government reputation, and credibility); and the rationalization of incomes policy. The Clarendon Lectures in Economics were established in 1987. They consist of coherent sets of three or four lectures given by distinguished economists which are accessible to advanced undergraduates and also of interest to academics. Subjects vary from high theory and applications of theory to policy-oriented topics. Lecturers include Professors J.-M. Grandmont, David Kreps, Kenneth Arrow, Angus Deaton, Robert Schiller, and Oliver Hart.

                      Book Description

Money, Financial Instability and Stabilization Policy consists of original articles by leading post Keynesians, Kaleckians and other heterodox economists from the developed and developing world.

Post Keynesian literature has long been associated with the study of money, financial markets and financial instability. Indeed, this is perhaps the area to which post Keynesians have made the greatest contributions. The contributors to this volume present an overview of the latest research on monetary theory and policy, financial markets, and financial instability coming out of the post Keynesian school of thought. They provide an indication of the wide-ranging interests and of the truly international scope of post Keynesian research. The first half of the volume is theoretical, while the second half includes papers that are either empirical or more focused on specific concerns.

This book will find an appreciative audience in economists generally as well as post Keynesian, other heterodox economists and macroeconomists specifically.

                          Book Description

Prabhat Patnaik's starting point is the fundamental question of how we can explain the resilience and durability of capitalist economies - after all, the writings of most of the giants among economists have been permeated by a sense of the transitoriness of capitalism. His argument is that the existence of a periphery of less developed countries provides a buffer that allows (relatively) crisis-free and non-inflationary growth in the capitalist core. The analysis unifies two fields that are normally separate: models of growth and stabilization policy in advanced economies and the economics of open developing economies. Consequently, Patnaik embraces both a thorough analysis of modern fiscal, monetary, and inflation policy in advanced capitalist economies and the constraints that systematically hinder development in less developed countries. Accumulation and Stability under Capitalism uses macroeconomic principles to solve problems currently addressed with microeconomic tools, establishing macroeconomics as a framework for analysing phenomena as wide-ranging as migration, imperialist systems, technological change, and labour markets. In the tradition of Keynes, Harrod and Domar, Marx, and Kalecki, it offers an alternative path to the choice-theoretic models that have appeared to be the only modern analytical path.

                              Book Description

Two of the most important economic processes at work in recent years are the globalization of the world economy, and the economic transition in Central and Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union . This book analyzes the transition process from a comparative perspective and places these changes within the wider framework of globalization. It assesses the problems of transition faced by business and governments to better understand the direction in which future economic and political policy should move for improved growth. It evaluates the current stage of economic development in the transitional countries and discusses trends in the world economy since the early 1990s. Specifically, it addresses trends in global and regional development strategies, government policies, privatization, foreign investment and external balances. The authors then analyze the future prospects for economic and political relations between Eastern Europe and the European Union, the World Trade Organization and the international community as a whole. Some of the specific issues they focus on include US industrial competitiveness policy, economic nationalism, privatization in Eastern Europe, venture capital activities, the required economic conditions for Eastern European countries to join the European Union, regionalism and industrial policy for Eastern Europe, and lessons to be learned from the Japanese and Hong Kong transformations, as well as a comparative assessment of some political aspects of the economic strategies in Japan and Germany. Eastern Europe and the World Economy will be welcomed by scholars and students interested in the economics of transition, comparative economic systems, international economics and development economics, as well as by policy makers and government officials.

Possibly one of the craziest books of all time, Uncle Steve's Redneck Anthology: Volume 1 takes a look at the lives of a few blue-collar folks in rural America. The book consists of six “out there” stories, including a drunken man who accidentally drinks his dead brother's ashes after mistaking them for coffee grounds, rednecks of the future battling an evil repo man, and a dysfunctional family's Christmas holiday. So, sit back and have a good laugh.
