This handsome 10-anniversary edition of a minor classic presents the story of Heather, a preschooler with two moms who discovers that some of her friends have very different sorts of families. Juan, for example, has a mommy and a daddy and a big brother named Carlos. Miriam has a mommy and a baby sister. And Joshua has a mommy, a daddy, and a stepdaddy. Their teacher Molly encourages the children to draw pictures of their families, and reassures them that "each family is special" and that "the most important thing about a family is that all the people in it love each other." In the afterword, the author (whose other children's books include Matzo Ball Moon) explains that although she grew up in a Jewish home, in a Jewish neighborhood, there were no families like hers on the television or in picture books. She came to regard her family as somehow "wrong," since there was no Christmas tree in the living room and no Easter egg hunt. Whatever the religious right may wish to think about nontraditional families, there is no denying that any child enrolled in an American school will encounter friends with single parents, gay parents, stepparents, or adoptive parents. This new, revised version of Heather Has Two Mommies offers an enjoyable, upbeat, age-appropriate introduction to the idea of family diversity. The book is essential for children (ages 2 to 6) with gay parents or family members, and a great addition to a Rainbow Curriculum. --Regina Marler

Book Description

Originally self-published in 1989, Heather Has Two Mommies became the first title in Alyson's newly formed Alyson Wonderland imprint in 1990. The simple and straightforward story of a little girl named Heather and her two lesbian mothers was created by Newman and illustrator Diana Souza because children's books that reflected a nontraditional family did not exist, but a firestorm of controversy soon ensued. Attacked by the religious right, lambasted by Jesse Helms from the floor of the U.S Senate, and stolen from library shelves, it was an uphill battle for Heather. Thanks to the overwhelming support of booksellers, librarians, parents, and children, however, Heather Has Two Mommies has sold over 35,000 copies, launched a minor industry in providing books for the children of gay and lesbian parents and, as attested to by a recent New Yorker cartoon, become part of the cultural lexicon.

5 out of 5 stars Two Mommies.......2007-09-25

It is a good book. It would be nice if it had colours and was not only black and white but still one should definitely buy it. It is important to grow our children whether the parents are gay or not with the open mind that one needs to be a human being.

1 out of 5 stars Totally Awful.......2007-06-18

Hey, I'm a lesbian mom myself. I have two great kids. I was given this book as a gift. What a horrible book. Difficult to read, full of 1970s impossible to comprehend propaganda. Almost seems like the crazy right-wing wrote it, there is so much to object to. How on earth is artificial insemination a subject for kids, and if it was, surely there is a less textbook, more creative positive way to portray it?? Surely. At best, this book is an artifact of good intentions, and little more.

5 out of 5 stars A Lesbian Couple's Child.......2007-05-21

Family diversity is the subject of this children's book about a lesbian couple's daughter. This is a groundbreaking book in today's society.

3 out of 5 stars A bit dated and stereotypical - but still groundbreaking nevertheless.......2007-03-26

We are expecting a baby in July - that's the reason we bought the book to seek opportunities and prepare to speak/educate our child about our relationship. I found the book to be a bit general in how it tries to represent family types and maybe a bit more stereotypical in explaining the lesbian mothers' relationship. Nevertheless it is a good book to start a conversation.

3 out of 5 stars didn't realize they book was about a lesbian home.......2007-03-13

Well, let's see... I have a son that's growing up in a split home... and I'm remarried. I thought this book was more along those lines. I tend to be quite liberal in my beliefs, but felt this was just not appropriate for a highly encouragible child. I have put it in the top of the closet until he's more at an appropriate age... maybe 10 or 12. The book was written in a very good manner that does help to illustrate how everyone has different family structures. I just didn't find it as something I want to introduce to my son at this time. The book is good and from what I thought was a classic... just not for me.

        Book Description

In Comrades and Enemies Zachary Lockman explores the mutually formative interactions between the Arab and Jewish working classes, labor movements, and worker-oriented political parties in Palestine just before and during the period of British colonial rule. Unlike most of the historical and sociological literature on Palestine in this period, Comrades and Enemies avoids treating the Arab and Jewish communities as if they developed independently of each other. Instead of focusing on politics, diplomacy, or military history, Lockman draws on detailed archival research in both Arabic and Hebrew, and on interviews with activists, to delve into the country's social, economic, and cultural history, showing how Arab and Jewish societies in Palestine helped to shape each other in significant ways.
Comrades and Enemies presents a narrative of Arab-Jewish relations in Palestine that extends and complicates the conventional story of primordial identities, total separation, and unremitting conflict while going beyond both Zionist and Palestinian nationalist mythologies and paradigms of interpretation.

                  Description:
The paper focuses on the constant elasticity of variance (CEV) model for studying a defined-contribution pension plan where benefits are paid by annuity. It also presents the process by which the Legendre transform and dual theory can be applied to find an optimal investment policy for a participant's whole life in the pension plan. Finally, it reveals two explicit solutions for the logarithm utility function in two different periods (before and after retirement). Hence, the optimal investment strategies in the two periods are obtained.

Part 2 extends the recent literature by presenting fourteen essays on different subjects of current research in: (a) the theory of insurance economics covering nonlinear expected utility, prudence, deviant beliefs, incomplete markets, increases in risk, ambiguity; (b) problems of information including moral hazard and competitive markets, adverse selection and probationary periods, incomplete information and risk categorization; and (c) empirical studies on workers' compensation, adverse selection and the effects of no-fault in automobile insurance. Each paper is presented with an abstract and keywords, and can be read independently of the other contributions in the volume.

From the supplier: Harvard University Professor Joseph P. Newhouse said that employers could reduce the over-utilization of the workers' compensation system by charging employees a portion of their costs, in remarks to the Workers' Compensation Research Institute. Newhouse said that the vague and flexible terms that define workers' comp systems sometimes allow for general medical costs to be shifted over to it.

                                    Book Description

Silver Doorway #1 A Gnome Away From Home Marky of Gnome Keep is lost and alone. He can't find his puppy, he can't find his way out of the woods, and to make matters worse, some owls have decided to have him for dinner. His only hope is to ask the Silver Lady, a good sorceress, for help. Instead, he gets twins Katie and Kevin, and their little brother Sam. The Broderick kids are having a hard time too. Their parents are always busy, they had to move to a new neighborhood, and to top things off, Dad just forgot to pick them up from an after-school ball game. Stranded, with nobody answering the phone, they decide to walk to their Aunt Ellie's house. Nobody is there but Ellie's cat Chester, but Katie knows where to find the spare key. The rest of the family thinks Aunt Ellie is strange. The kids are about to find out how strange she really is when they discover a secret room in her basement. Inside the secret room is a glowing silver doorway that leads to another world. Marky the gnome has come through that doorway. When the kids follow him back, they find themselves in a world where magic is real, giant owls carry people away, and goblins try to steal children to change them into more goblins. Even if they can help Marky get home, how will Katie, Kevin and Sam find their way back to their own world?
