Usability design is one of the most important--yet often least attractive--tasks for a Web developer. In Don't Make Me Think, author Steve Krug lightens up the subject with good humor and excellent, to-the-point examples.

The title of the book is its chief personal design premise. All of the tips, techniques, and examples presented revolve around users being able to surf merrily through a well-designed site with minimal cognitive strain. Readers will quickly come to agree with many of the book's assumptions, such as "We don't read pages--we scan them" and "We don't figure out how things work--we muddle through." Coming to grips with such hard facts sets the stage for Web design that then produces topnotch sites.

Using an attractive mix of full-color screen shots, cute cartoons and diagrams, and informative sidebars, the book keeps your attention and drives home some crucial points. Much of the content is devoted to proper use of conventions and content layout, and the "before and after" examples are superb. Topics such as the wise use of rollovers and usability testing are covered using a consistently practical approach.

This is the type of book you can blow through in a couple of evenings. But despite its conciseness, it will give you an expert's ability to judge Web design. You'll never form a first impression of a site in the same way again. --Stephen W. Plain

Book Description

Five years and more than 100,000 copies after it was first published, it's hard to imagine anyone working in Web design who hasn't read Steve Krug's "instant classic" on Web usability, but people are still discovering it every day. In this second edition, Steve adds three new chapters in the same style as the original: wry and entertaining, yet loaded with insights and practical advice for novice and veteran alike. Don't be surprised if it completely changes the way you think about Web design.

Three New Chapters!

"I thought usability was the enemy of design until I read the first edition of this book. Don't Make Me Think! showed me how to put myself in the position of the person who uses my site. After reading it over a couple of hours and putting its ideas to work for the past five years, I can say it has done more to improve my abilities as a Web designer than any other book.

In this second edition, Steve Krug adds essential ammunition for those whose bosses, clients, stakeholders, and marketing managers insist on doing the wrong thing. If you design, write, program, own, or manage Web sites, you must read this book." -- Jeffrey Zeldman, author of Designing with Web Standards

5 out of 5 stars Essential tool for any website admin!.......2007-10-25

Steve Krug flawlessly (and colorfully) presents the need for website usability testing and affordable, easy-to-implement strategies for making your site function more efficiently, no matter the number of users. Steve's strategies seem so basic, but anyone who uses the web at all knows that most sites have at least some sort flaw when it comes to usability. Steve's recommendations are by no means a panacea for a site's problems, but they're a great start. Anyone who writes for, develops content for or administers a website at work or home needs to read (and re-read) this book. Steve also happens to be a very nice guy and will most certainly respond if you have any questions for him.

2 out of 5 stars Definitely not worth reading.......2007-10-22

I am definitely not a usability expert but I was expecting much more substance from a "self proclaimed" expert. The examples are so obvious, dumbed down and old (from 1999-2000). I think this book should entirely be written with Web 2.0 in mind. I agree that design principles do not change over time, and this book is not about technology, but users expect more and more with new technologies. While some design patterns stay the same, some evolve and become expected with the advent of newer technologies.

Don't waste your time with this book, and buy a more recently written book for people who really want to know about usability.

5 out of 5 stars A thin book with everything you need.......2007-10-13

This book is excellent. It's very accessible and easy reading without being superficial. It's not a usability cookbook, it actually makes you understand its principles and gives you critical sense to analyze any website and see what's wrong (or right) with it.
I just couldn't find any negative points about the book.

5 out of 5 stars eye-opening analysis.......2007-10-07

I'm not a designer and I would by nature make many of the mistakes Krug points out in this great book. Krug's reasoning and reasoned approach that he presents in this book is invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic - Easy to Understand and Use.......2007-10-06

This book on internet usability has not only changed the way I design websites, it has changed my thinking on many areas of life. The other day I was asked to review a print media item and I kept saying to the designer - "Don't Make Me Think!" The idea of designing easy to use, simple to understand websites is so simple that it is often overlooked. This is a fantastic read. I'm halfway through my second reading of it.

        Book Description

A pioneering work in comparative monetary and financial studies, this is the first international comparative, empirical study of the money supply process (MSP) that involves all of the basic types of economies and institutional economic systems at all levels of economic development. As the authors note at the outset, the highly relative nature of the MSP contributes to wide differences in the MSP in different types of economies. Yet the MSP is one of the most important topics of both monetary theory and monetary practice. The comparative approach adopted here enables the authors to explain the differences that do occur in the MSP across economies and what causes them. By properly defining the general theory and overall monetary theory of MSP, the authors offer the reader both a better understanding of the national MSP and a broad framework of possibilities for improving the efficiency of monetary policy. The authors begin by describing their approach to an analysis of the MSP in national economies and the concepts and models used in this analysis. They then explain the classification of economies used in the study and their methodological approach, which is based on a two-dimensional flow of funds accounts matrix. Four chapters present the empirical evidence derived from this approach. Included are both a holistic analysis and a structural comparative analysis of the MSP. A separate chapter presents a comparative analysis involving 100 countries of the MSP during the 1978-83 time period. Finally, the authors look at the influence of the balance-of-payments and of domestic institutional sectors on the MSP. Their concluding chapters summarize their findings and point the way to further research in this area. Scholars and policymakers in economics, macroeconomics, and monetary policy will find this an illuminating addition to the literature of the money supply process.

          Book Description

Authors James D. Gwartney, Richard L. Stroup, Russell S. Sobel, and David Macpherson, believe that a course on principles of economics should focus on the power and relevance of the economic way of thinking. It is this belief and corresponding writing approach that has made MACROECONOMICS: PRIVATE AND PUBLIC CHOICE one of South Western Thomson Learning's most solid and enduring texts. Throughout this text, the authors integrate applications and real-world data in an effort to make the basic concepts of economics come alive for the reader.

            Book Description

This volume focuses on current problems in banking that have the potential not only for disrupting the smooth provision of banking and other financial services, but also for adversely affecting domestic and even international macroeconomic activity. Because serious banking problems have been experienced in most countries in recent years, the papers both focus on fragility and regulation in different countries and are authored by leading financial economists in six different countries including Belgium, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. By providing an international perspective, the papers provide insights into the commonality of banking problems in different countries and the role of regulation both in attempting to prevent and in potentially, albeit unintentionally, encouraging bank crises. As such, the papers add to our storehouse of knowledge on the causes, symptoms, and consequences of banking problems across countries.

              Book Description

Susan Sell's book reveals how power in international politics is increasingly exercised by private interests rather than governments. In 1994 the World Trade Organization (WTO) adopted the Agreement in Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), which dictated to states how they should regulate the protection of intellectual property. This book argues that TRIPS resulted from lobbying by powerful multinational corporations who wished to mould international law to protect their markets.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Emergence of TRIPS.......2005-11-22

The purpose of the book is to explain the emergence of a more ambitious global intellectual property regime in the form of the TRIPS (Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights) agreement - one of several agreements to emerge from the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations. The main argument is that TRIPS emerged primarily as a result of good organization and transnational consensus building on the part of a small group of leaders of multinational corporations called the Intellectual Property Committee (IPC), and the coincidence of the perceived interests of that group with key governments such as that of the United States. In the last chapter, Susan Sell shows how these circumstances did not exist for other Uruguay Round agreements and that, as a result, those agreements were weaker. She also argues that the TRIPS agreement represents an overly aggressive interpretation of intellectual property rights to the advantage of multinational corporations and that a political backlash against this is already underway.

This is a real contribution to the field for the following reasons. There is a very good overview of the rationale behind the granting of intellectual property rights and a very careful analysis of who wins and loses with strict enforcement of laws protecting intellectual property rights. There is also an unusually detailed analysis of the slow evolution of intellectual property laws in the United States that set up the conditions for a change toward more extensive grants of rights in the last two decades. The analysis of the politics of negotiating the TRIPS agreement is an excellent and original contribution to the growing literature on the Uruguay Round. Finally, there is a very good theoretical discussion, relevant mainly to theorists of international relations, about the so-called "structure-agency" problem.

I would compare this book favorably with Wayne Sandholtz's excellent work, High Tech Europe. It also holds up well in comparison with Laura Tyson's Who's Bashing Whom? I don't think it is a blockbuster book, but rather a solid piece of scholarship in an important and somewhat neglected area and that it will represent a standard for future scholarly work on its subject.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant study of the politics of intellectual property.......2003-07-29

This is a very important and highly topical book, which shows in an accessible and persuasive manner how big business has played a decisive role in guiding the international regulation of intellectual property protection. It should be read not only by scholars and students of international politics, but by all those interested in how intellectual property relates to and impacts on international trade, the global expansion of the US entertainment, software and drug industries, and also the health needs of people in developing countries including those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

One of the book's strengths is that it is very well researched, being based on interviews with many of the key players. Another is that the author lets the facts speak for themselves rather than rams home a particular point of view. Nonetheless, the book is bound to make the reader feel indignant in the way that the global intellectual property regime seems to favour the interests of the rich and powerful over those of the poor and powerless.

In short, the book is now the definitive guide to the politics of TRIPS, and I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars politics of TRIPS.......2003-07-25

This book provides a fascinating perspective on the politics underlying the TRIPS Agreement. It demonstrates the unique power that strong, well financed interest groups possess when legislative obligations are made at the international level. Anyone working specifically on international intellectual property issues would do well to read this book.

1 out of 5 stars Two pages of content packed into just 188 pages!.......2003-07-11

There must be some value to this thesis, but I haven't found it. A two page summary of TRIPS would have sufficed.

                    Book Description

Increasing economic competition combined with the powerful threat of transnational activism are pushing firms to develop new political strategies. Over the past decade a growing number of corporations have adopted policies of industry self-regulation—corporate codes of conduct, social and environmental standards, and auditing and monitoring systems. A Public Role for the Private Sector explores the phenomenon of industry self-regulation through three different cases—environment, labor, and information privacy—where corporate leaders appear to be converging on industry self-regulation as the appropriate response to competing pressures. Political and economic risks, reputational effects, and learning within the business community all influence the adoption of a self-regulatory strategy, but there are wide variations in the strength and character of it across industries and issue areas. Industry self-regulation raises significant questions about the place of the private sector in regulation and governance, and the accountability, legitimacy and power of industry at a time of rapid globalization.

Latin America’s macroeconomic crises of the 1980s and ‘90s forced a severe fiscal adjustment across the region. More often than not, fiscal stability was achieved at the cost of a drastic compression of public infrastructure spending, accompanied by the hope that the private sector would take the leading role in infrastructure provision.

This book documents the major trends in infrastructure provision in Latin America over the past two decades n order to assess the consequences of this changed public-private partnership from the perspective of economic growth, public finances, and the quantity and quality of infrastructure services. It will be of particular interest to those in the fields of infrastructure, fiscal policy, and economic growth, and anyone concerned with Latin America’s development.

5 out of 5 stars Never judge a book by its cover unless it's this one!.......2005-02-15

This is a hysterically funny book that in parody actually tells the awful truth about Britain's stupidity in getting involved in the Iraq War in the first Place but it is done in such a way you have to laugh out loud because if you don't you will end up crying instead.

Written very much in the style of Mark Haddon's book "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" we quickly come to the conclusion that dear old Mr Blair and his many friends such as Alistair, Angi and Bill are really not on the planet with the rest of us mere mortals!

Tongue in cheek is given a new name here is all I can say and I had to wipe away many a tear of laughter and desperation as I read each page, and yes, as the front cover says, you can read it in, "forty-five-minutes!"

As with Mark Haddon's book we are treated to little black and white pictures along with clipped precise explanations that make us realise that most of our politicians and their cronies are fools and we are even bigger fools for voting for them in the first place.

A great book that puts the whole sorry state of world on trial and finds everyone guilty as charged!

                          4 out of 5 stars Tony's autobiography (not).......2004-12-04

This tongue in cheek autobiography of Britian's Prime Minister Tony Blair is funny. The humnor is in the caricature of Tony and his close associates. The truth is sad. On the last page is "Who's Not Who" the story of the first casualty (read "dead person") of the present Iraq war. What happened since to his family? Are they alive? Is his widow a prostitute now to make ends meet? Or what?

Te tone of the book is consistent throughout, which must have been rather hard to do as it cannot be this writer's natural writing style. A throughly enjoyable book (I gave it four stars because it is not great literature).
