Digital Photography: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks

If you're comfortable with the concept of photography but find the digital part a stumbling block, Digital Photography for Dummies will get you over the hump.
Author Julie Adair King, a photographer and graphics-software specialist, deftly explains such concepts as resolution, f-stop, and compression. She is also refreshingly upfront about the differences between film-based and digital photography, spelling out the latter's shortcomings early on. Her advice on all aspects of the field is well thought out and simple without being condescending. She informs readers, for example, that you needn't use high-pixel resolutions simply for placing images on a Web page. Such tips will come as a relief to fledgling photographers on a budget, or novices who may have thought they had to use the highest-quality settings at all times.
Aside from the technical concerns of working with the camera and computer, King also gives sound tips on composition and lighting. And since retouching is one of the principal benefits of digital photography, she spends a fair amount of time discussing photo-editing software. And while most of the examples are in black and white, the most important examples, gratefully, are included in a 16-page color plate section in the middle of the book.
For those of you considering jumping into the world of digital photography, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better guide to getting started than Digital Photography for Dummies. --John Frederick Moore
Book Description
In the 1840s, William Henry Fox Talbot combined light, paper, a few chemicals, and a wooden box to produce a photographic print, laying the foundation for modern film photography. Over the years, that process was refined, and people discovered the joy of photography. Now, more than 160 years after Talbot's innovation, photography has entered a new age, with the arrival of the digital camera and a new and exciting way to think about photography. In fact, digital photography has spawned an entirely new art form.
With a digital camera, a computer, and some photo-editing software, you can explore the unlimited creative opportunities of digital photography. Just think – no more film, no more film development costs, no more limitations of working only with what's there. With digital photography, you have almost instant access to your photos, and with photo-editing software, you can easily clean up your photos and add special effects that used to be nearly impossible for the amateur photographer to achieve.
Digital Photography For Dummies, 4th Edition, is your introduction to the world of digital photography, whether you're a beginner taking your first shot or an experienced photographer looking to try a new medium. In this newly revised edition, you'll discover the following topics and more:
- Explore the different kinds of equipment – from cameras and computers to photo-editing software
- Understand the science behind digital photography, including resolution, aperture, shutter speeds, and f-stops
- Compose great shots, including how to light your subject
- Solve common photographic dilemmas – such as capturing a moving target and dealing with unfriendly lighting
- Edit your photos by sharpening them, removing red eye, and cropping them
- Display your photos in a variety of ways – on CD, on the Web, or in slide shows
- Top Ten lists on ways to improve your digital images, great ways to use your photos, and online resources all digital photographers should know about
Digital Photography For Dummies, 4th Edition, also comes with a CD that includes trial versions of popular photo-editing software, as well as some original photos taken by the author that you can use to experiment with.

Having been an early adapter in digital photography, it is still hard to keep up with techniques and newly availablr formats. This book is great in taking you as far as you might need to go or further if you need to.
Pick a Subject!.......2007-07-10
I guess I don't think of photo editing as digital photography. When I think digital photography, I'm thinking of the art of photography, taken with a digital camera instead of a film camera. That's all.
Photo editing, to me, is different. If you are looking for a book explaining aperture, exposure, shutter speed, f/stops, etc., this book only has 41 pages on those subjects.
There are 354 pages total (not counting the glossary) and 194 of them are on the photo editing Elements program.
I found myself skipping and skimming and flipping for more information. As if I had missed something, I would find myself going back and re-reading and still being let down. I wanted a book on taking better pictures, not taking OKAY pictures, and fixing them later with an outside program - and maybe that's my fault with the definition I have in my head. I didn't want a book on Elements, as I don't have that program.
Good Basic Introduction for the Beginner.......2007-01-28
Like all the 'For Dummies' books this one assumes that you are not really dumb but that you don't have much knowledge about the subject at hand. It fits in very well with the recent dramatic drop in prices of digital cameras. As I look at the array of cameras at the local stores, digitals now outnumber film by a couple of dozen to one.
As you would expect, the book starts with a general introduction to the cameras and the technology. The third chapter gets down to 'In Search of the Perfect Camera.' It can't help but be a bit out of date, for instance in talking about how many megapixels to buy she starts with VGA resolution and goes up to four megapixels. Just in the time it took to get this book into print (and it's already in its fifth edition) even inexpensive cameras now have more than four. In fact I just got an ad today for an 8 megapixel camera for $119.
About a third of the book is on using your PC to modify the pictures. She uses Adobe Photoshop Elements (the low cost version of Photoshop) as the photo editing software, and gives a very good introduction to the basic functionality.
All in all, an excellent introduction to the subject, just as you would expect from a 'For Dummies' book - a very good value for the money.

Digital Photography for Dummies by King - Review.......2007-01-07
Very, very basic. Even the "technical info" was very basic and offered little technical insight. All digital editing information is from the single prospective of Photoshop Elements - a great plug for Adobe - though nowhere on the cover is it stated that the book's editing tips are based soley on this single editor. Maybe a third of the book was devoted to editing so a third of the book for those without AP Elements software is of very little value. Not much to learn from the book unless you have never owned a camera or taken a snapshot - in that case this book would likely have some utility to get you started.

Book Description
This book is a companion volume to Dynamic Macroeconomic Theory by Thomas J. Sargent. It provides scrimmages in dynamic macroeconomic theory--precisely the kind of drills that people will need in order to learn the techniques of dynamic programming and its applications to economics. By doing these exercises, the reader can acquire the ability to put the theory to work in a variety of new situations, build technical skill, gain experience in fruitful ways of setting up problems, and learn to distinguish cases in which problems are well posed from cases in which they are not.
The basic framework provided by variants of a dynamic general equilibrium model is used to analyze problems in macroeconomics and monetary economics. An equilibrium model provides a mapping from parameters of preferences, technologies, endowments, and "rules of the game" to a probability model for time series. The rigor of the logical connections between theory and observations that the mapping provides is an attractive feature of dynamic equilibrium, or "rational expectations," models. This book gives repeated and varied practice in constructing and interpreting this mapping.

Book Description
Many students find introductory economics interesting but difficult, so they will really appreciate this study tool designed to make the core material easier to understand. A summary and list of key terms begins each chapter, providing readers with a "map" and hundreds of problems with detailed solutions illustrate and amplify key points. A chapter devoted to drafting and interpreting graphs helps students gain a facility with this material essential for mastering.

.... just OK.......2006-03-13
I purchased a few books in preparation for the macro/micro econ CLEP tests. Among these books is the Schaums Principles of Economics book. From my experience, the book is not very thorough. Perhaps it will help you understand economics -- and for some people, I am sure it is a sufficient study aid -- but there are definitely better Econ books out there. The book that I am reading right now is Barron's Economics, which I find to be much more detailed. A significant difference between the two books is that the Barron's version is ~580 pages long (about 200 pages longer than the Schaums), but these pages are full of additional material that is not found in Schaums (in other words, it is not a waste of paper). Although both books seem to cover roughly the same material, I have noticed that the Barron's book includes some interesting chapters (such as Game Theory) that are not even mentioned in the Schaum's book.
One more thing that I find important is that the Barron's book has smaller dimensions than the Schaums book and is therefore much more manageable (and enjoyable to read).
Luckily, the used prices for this book are pretty low, so you can always do what I did and just buy both of the books! If you are interested in more books that are introductory material to economics, the following books have sparked my interest in the field:
The Elusive Quest for Growth (the troubles we have encountered in trying to develop struggling nations)
Economics in One Lesson (a succintly written book that covers basic economic fallacies)
Globalization and its Discontents (Yes, it is about Globalization... written by Stiglitz of the World Bank)
Hope this helps :)
Not up to Schaum's standards.......2006-02-02
This book is *ok*, but it is not as good as the other Schaum's books that I own (I own nearly 20 of them). I recomment this book ONLY if you are studying high school economics. If you are in college (or taking AP Economics or studying for CLEP), get the Microeconomics and Macroeconomics versions of this guide.
Disappointing.......2003-02-22
I used Schaum's Oulines to study for my accounting CLEP test, preparing for my MBA program. The Financial and Managerial Accounting titles were excellent. I have also used them to supplement my MBA texts in Operations Management and Financial Management. Overall, the series is lucid and easy to follow. I was expecting this title to follow suit.
Unfortunately, it did not.
The exposition is shoddy at best. Though I could solve the problems as they were given, I found myself struggling to understand economics. Since I was studying to CLEP test out of my prerequisite Micro and Macro Econ, I was concerned. After a few weeks, I purchased Harper Collins' College Outlines' Intro to Economics, and was pleasantly surprised to find that I could understand economics.
Buisiness Study Beginner from Korea.......2000-04-09
I am an old beginner in Economics. I just wanted to study to prepare my CMA certificate. Schaum's series are very popular in Korea, and maybe in the United States also for their selected many problems. That's why I chose this book for my preparation in Economics exam. Economics is very broad and practical studies. This book is written in 1995, 5 years ago from now. Someone feels it is too old to study. But I don't think so, because how much change in 5 years in Economics. The economy of a society is changing a lot in 5 years evidently but the Economics cannot be changed a lot in 5 years even in these E-days! I graduated from school longtime ago, and sometimes I was stupid in my school days because I just studied the text only without so many problems. I am now sure that the problem-driven study is the best way to conquer the complex theory. Good luck to you, and hope to find this book to help your understanding the Economics theory and extend to your real life.

Book Description
This book contains computational methods for numerically computing steady state and Hopf bifurcations. It is probably the first textbook to describe these types of numerical bifurcation techniques. The book requires only a basic knowledge of calculus, and uses detailed examples, problems, and figures. This will be appropriate as a textbook for graduate students.
Customer Reviews:
For a get-hands-wet approach to learning the subject........2000-04-04
As it promises in its title, this book is concerned with developing a practising knowledge of bifurcation analysis. The book starts with a very simple introduction, and takes off from there. The content is lively and straightforward. Concepts are introduced in plain language, without the technical complexity of formal mathematical jargon. Few theorems are proved, so the concepts remain in focus. Computational techniques are an important concern, and their problems. All in all, an entertaining and at once informative book to learn using a hands-on-approach. It manages to cover a fairly large amount of material, for a thorough introduction. Useful for people who are primarily interested in applications.

Book Description
This book presents an in-depth study and a solution technique for an important class of optimization problems. This class is characterized by special constraints: parameter-dependent convex programs, variational inequalities or complementarity problems. All these so-called equilibrium constraints are mostly treated in a convenient form of generalized equations. The book begins with a chapter on auxiliary results followed by a description of the main numerical tools: a bundle method of nonsmooth optimization and a nonsmooth variant of Newton's method. Following this, stability and sensitivity theory for generalized equations is presented, based on the concept of strong regularity. This enables one to apply the generalized differential calculus for Lipschitz maps to derive optimality conditions and to arrive at a solution method. A large part of the book focuses on applications coming from continuum mechanics and mathematical economy. A series of nonacademic problems is introduced and analyzed in detail. Each problem is accompanied with examples that show the efficiency of the solution method.
This book is addressed to applied mathematicians and engineers working in continuum mechanics, operations research and economic modelling. Students interested in optimization will also find the book useful.

Book Description
In complementarity theory, which is a relatively new domain of applied mathematics, several kinds of mathematical models and problems related to the study of equilibrium are considered from the point of view of physics as well as economics. In this book the authors have combined complementarity theory, equilibrium of economical systems, and efficiency in Pareto's sense. The authors discuss the use of complementarity theory in the study of equilibrium of economic systems and present results they have obtained. In addition the authors present several new results in complementarity theory and several numerical methods for solving complementarity problems associated with the study of economic equilibrium. The most important notions of Pareto efficiency are also presented.
Audience: Researchers and graduate students interested in complementarity theory, in economics, in optimization, and in applied mathematics.

This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Economic Theory, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
It is known that in two-sided many-to-many matching problems, pairwise-stable matchings may not be immune to group deviations, unlike in many-to-one matching problems (Blair, 1988). In this paper, we show that pairwise stability is equivalent to credible group stability when one side has responsive preferences and the other side has categorywise-responsive preferences. A credibly group-stable matching is immune to any ''executable'' group deviations with an appropriate definition of executability. Under the same preference restriction, we also show the equivalence between the set of pairwise-stable matchings and the set of matchings generated by coalition-proof Nash equilibria of an appropriately defined strategic-form game.

Book Description
Decisions, Games and Markets is designed to stimulate new developments in decision theory, game theory and general equilibrium theory, as well as in their applications to economics. The book is divided into three parts - Decision Theory, Game Theory, and the Theory of Markets. Though its orientation is primarily methodological, some articles are more applied. The consistent use of formal analysis and methodological individualism constitutes the unifying theme of the book.
Decisions, Games and Markets will be of considerable interest to both students and teachers of microeconomics and game and decision theory.

Book Description
Recent years have witnessed a resurgence in the kinetic approach to dynamic many-body problems. Modern kinetic theory offers a unifying theoretical framework within which a great variety of seemingly unrelated systems can be explored in a coherent way. Kinetic methods are currently being applied in such areas as the dynamics of colloidal suspensions, granular material flow, electron transport in mesoscopic systems, the calculation of Lyapunov exponents and other properties of classical many-body systems characterised by chaotic behaviour. The present work focuses on Brownian motion, dynamical systems, granular flows, and quantum kinetic theory.

Book Description
The aim of the book is to cover the three fundamental aspects of research in equilibrium problems: the statement problem and its formulation using mainly variational methods, its theoretical solution by means of classical and new variational tools, the calculus of solutions and applications in concrete cases. The book shows how many equilibrium problems follow a general law (the so-called user equilibrium condition). Such law allows us to express the problem in terms of variational inequalities. Variational inequalities provide a powerful methodology, by which existence and calculation of the solution can be obtained.
