Book Description
If you have ever looked for P-values by shopping at P mart, tried to watch the Bernoulli Trails on "People's Court," or think that the standard deviation is a criminal offense in six states, then you need The Cartoon Guide to Statistics to put you on the road to statistical literacy.
The Cartoon Guide to Statistics covers all the central ideas of modern statistics: the summary and display of data, probability in gambling and medicine, random variables, Bernoulli Trails, the Central Limit Theorem, hypothesis testing, confidence interval estimation, and much more--all explained in simple, clear, and yes, funny illustrations. Never again will you order the Poisson Distribution in a French restaurant!

Cool.......2007-08-29
This book is so cool! It makes the topic clear and fun at the same time.
Cartoons add little and subtract much.......2007-08-23
I have a B.S. (from a school you haven't heard of) and an M.S. (from one you have) in mathematics, and I teach math, but probability and statistics was my _worst_ undergraduate math class (I avoided it in grad school). I came across this book, and I bought it on a chance. I'm sorry to say, it was wasted money...
1) The cartoons at best merely illustrate points made in the text; at worst they are irrelevant interruptions. For example, here we have a cartoon of the reader in a straightjacket after the text mentions calculus. And there's a cartoon of a man rolling dice. This sort of stuff does not advance the discussion.
2) The cartoon format reduces the space available for text. The discussion is therefore abbreviated and compressed; points are made once only, without examples, and often after skipping important steps. I think it's _more_ difficult than a standard textbook.
3) There are no exercises! Who ever heard of a math book without exercises? We learn by doing, I always tell my students, not by just reading or listening.
I think this book may be useful to a former student of statistics who wants a review but I can't think of anyone else who would get much out of it.
A dry textbook + cartoons.......2007-06-12
Whenever I try reading this book my eyes just gloss over. It's extremely dry material with cartoons added to every page to make it seem as if it'll be entertaining and easy to learn from but IMO it's neither. On the contrary, it would probably be best as a reference book. Almost every page has a new equation or symbol on it and I rarely felt that they were adequately discussed. "What does it do? When is it useful? What does it mean if the value is high/low?" are questions I constantly asked myself and the book doesn't take the time to answer.
Not for the feint of heart.......2007-05-19
Some people will complain that the book is difficult and/ or uninteresting. To this I say, "Dude, it's statistics! Mr. Gonick makes the best of a difficult subject. This is certainly not less friendly than your stats text book." If you want an easy laugh, get a Get Fuzzy compilation, if you want a different and more intuitive approach to statistics, this is your best bet.
Ok resource.......2007-05-13
My MBA program suggested this book to all incoming first years. In reading it so far, it outlines the concepts well, but doesn't give enough opportunity to practice them and get comfortable with them. I am not getting very much out of it, but I may use it as a resource when I am taking my actual stats class.

Book Description
Computational Models in the Economics of Environment and Development provides a step-by-step guide in designing, developing, and solving non-linear environment-development models. It accomplishes this by focusing on applied models, using real examples as case studies. Additionally, it gives examples of developing policy interventions based on quantitative model results. Finally, it uses a simple computer program, GAMS, to develop and solve models.
This book is targeted towards university lecturers and students in economic modeling and sustainable development, but is also of particular interest to researchers at sustainable development research institutes and policy makers at international sustainable development policy institutions such the World Bank, UNDP, and UNEP.

Book Description
Three questions need to be addressed when discussing the global warming issue. First, is a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions necessary? Second, if the answer is yes, what is the optimal level of CO2 emissions? Third, who should be held responsible for reducing CO2 emissions? This book addresses these three questions by formulating a global economic growth model with links between the economic system and the climate system. With this formulation, feedback effects of climate change on the economic systems are captured endogenously within the model structure. The book will be required reading for those working in the climate change field, as well as for computational economic model builders.

Financial Accounting (6th Edition) (Charles T Horngren Series in Accounting)
ASIN: 027596308X |
Book Description
The political consensus in the United States today is that the nation avoid deficit spending. But as virtuous and unassailable as that goal sounds, it has fallacies and dangers. In a lucid, nontechnical writing style, Benavie shows that deficits can be either good or bad and explains how to tell the difference. Deficits, or government borrowing, can be beneficial or harmful depending on what the government does with the money. Preventing such borrowing, Benavie points out, would be comparable to preventing one's family from borrowing money to buy a house or to put a child through college. Deficits can be beneficial to the nation's economic health in three main ways. When the economy slumps, a deficit, which is automatically created, helps to reduce the severity of the recession. When the economy is seriously depressed, boosting the deficit may be the only cure. Finally, deficits to support such investments as basic research, cleaning up toxic waste, and rebuilding inner cities are crucial to the economic health of future generations.
Book Description
In Restoring Fiscal Sanity, scholars with high-level government experience provide an overview of the country's likely medium- and long-term spending needs and the resources available to pay for them. They propose three alternative fiscal paths that are more responsible than the current path.

Book Description
The Truth About the National Debt shatters five long-held myths and highlights one reality about what is now a $5 trillion national debt. Drawing on more than 30 years at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he served seven presidents, Cavanaugh argues that public debt is not all bad news. Instead, the problem is undisciplined government expenditures-whether financed by debt or taxes. He also outlines the real effects of the debt on future generations, private investment, interest rates, social security, and foreign investment and proposes a redefinition of the federal deficit to restore discipline and confidence in the management of the government's finances.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for anyone that wants to know how public finance actually works!.......2007-10-15
This is a great book for anyone that wants to know how public finance actually works. After having studied economics for many years, it always gets to me when I hear stupid members of Congress or their political people say that spending is destroying the nation. First, if that were true, maybe they (Congress) should stop spending. Although the stats are a few years behind, it is the facts about the debt that are important.
A must read.......2006-07-12
This is a must read for anyone who wants to know about the national debt and its significance, or as you will find out in the book, its lack thereof.
The only point I disagree with is his argument of the insignificance of foreign debt. I feel this is still a major issue. Also, he tries to go into other aspects of government funding that are problematic, but I found it very difficult to understand.

Book Description
The Budget Deficit and National Debt analyzes and attempts to better understand the problems associated with the debt and deficit. The theme of this book parallels the Miller Center's primary focus on governance and the presidency. The president is a key actor in submitting, approving, and administrating the budget. Therefore, the study of debt and deficit is in keeping with the Miller Center's focus on governance and the presidency. The book is divided into four sections. The first section discusses the debt and deficit from a variety of political perspectives and ideological approaches. Three contributors, representing different schools of thought and professional backgrounds, provide separate frameworks for considering the budget and deficit. The first section contrasts liberal, conservative, and independent views and compares the effects of the deficit on federal and local governments. The second section provides an overview of the origins and growth of the deficit and its effect on the U.S. economy. The authors outline interaction among and competition between economic and political forces operating in the United States, and they debate the merits of deficit reduction proposals. The third section examines the economic and political ramifications of the deficit, reviewing tactical and strategic errors and their consequences. The book concludes with a discussion of the political struggle over controlling the deficit and chronicles the ambitions and rivalries of two key political figures--Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich. Their dispute over the seven year balanced-budget plan had significant influence on the policies of debt and deficit.

Lacks hard number data- a collection of differing opinions.......1999-08-10
For $48 I expected a substantial book loaded with solid information. Instead it is in narrative form, a series of opinions, speeches to a forum, congressional testimony, many opinions contradictory to one another, most with a speaker bias or selling a point of view. I felt I did not learn anything nor use it for self education nor could I use it to guide others.

Book Description
This new release complete's Brenner's recording of I Think There's a Terrorist in My Soup, his brilliant, healing, post-9/11 comedy collection. At six o'clock on September 11, 2001, David Brenner interrupted his day-long vigil of TV news and desperate e-mail messages to his New York friends and acquaintances. He showered, put on a suit and tie, drove to the Las Vegas showroom where he had been working since the previous November, and performed 90 minutes of comedy. Soon after, he told his manager to book him on a nationwide tour. He called it the "Laughter to the People" tour, and it became the most gratifying chapter in his long and distinguished career. Featuring audience-tested highlights from his standup shows, I Think There's a Terrorist in My Soup confirms Brenner's conviction that "laughter is the best medicine, and if one can laugh, one can live." He riffs on a wide range of issues, from the personal to the political. It's hilarity with a healthy dose of humanity and hope--precisely what our nation needed then and needs today.
