      Book Description

APPLIED REGRESSION ANALYSIS applies regression to real data and examples while employing commercial statistical and spreadsheet software. Covering the core regression topics as well as optional topics including ANOVA, Time Series Forecasting, and Discriminant Analysis, the text emphasizes the importance of understanding the assumptions of the regression model, knowing how to validate a selected model for these assumptions, knowing when and how regression might be useful in a business setting, and understanding and interpreting output from statistical packages and spreadsheets.

5 out of 5 stars Great Minitab Resource.......2007-05-15

Dr. Dielman was a professor of mine. The book is well organized and useful for all people on all levels.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-12-26

For my class, the professor assigned Kleinbaum et al's textbook rather than this one. As I mentioned in my review for that book, it was so confusing and poorly organized. Luckily, I found this book in the library and used it instead and ended up a lot less confused in class than my classmates who were trying to understand the Kleinbaum book. Dielman's book is very well organized and laid out. It doesn't have colorful bells and whistles since it's a fairly upper level book, but it does have a very user-friendly layout. Furthermore, the formulas are never presented without an accompanying explanation in plain English and examples of how and when to use them. Another thing I really like about this book is that it gives thorough directions on how to do a lot of the analyses on some common statistical packages. Many of the instructions are accompanied by screenshots. They're at the end of each chapter rather than interspersed in the text, which makes them easy to find. This is actually becoming a great SAS manual for me.

For anyone struggling with the Kleinbaum book, or for any instructor considering using the Kleinbaum book, I would highly recommend this one instead.

      5 out of 5 stars A Cross-platform textbook.......2006-05-15

I have bought Dr. Dielman's Applied Regression 4e textbook in Taiwan) for preparing my MBA thesis regarding the interaction effects. Given the widespread use of commercially available packages, this book provided considerately coverage on ALL computer packages about the field of regression work.

5 out of 5 stars Go-to book for regression analysis.......2005-07-01

Perhaps A.H. Studenmund wrote his book for economics students, but as a biomedical scientist, Using Econometrics is my go-to reference for applied regression analysis, period. I know of no other book on the subject that is more understandable, succinct and eaisly applied to real-world problems.

5 out of 5 stars Very understandable introduction to econometrics.......2004-07-01

First of all I will admit, this is the only book I have read for econometrics. It was the book chosen by my professor for my eonometrics class while doing my undergraduate in economics. Having said that I recommend the book. I feel that it is a very good intro to a subject that can get weighted down in technical difficulties for the beginning student. Some people have complained about its lack of rigor or lack of proofs but I feel that is unjustified because all it really does is utilize statistical principles for economics. At my university, and I would assume most, stats was a prereq for this course and in stats you should cover the real nuts and bolts of statistical theory. This would give you your proofs and underlying understanding of the hands on approach this book gives for econometrics. I think that this book is good in that it does give, as it says, a practical guide to econometrics enabling the student to move on to the more analytically rigorous studies of the field. It doesn't overwhelm but leaves you with a foundational sense of understanding.

          4 out of 5 stars Fulfil expectations.......2003-07-09

That book goes straight to the point. First, the title of the book is 100% appropriate. It is about how to use econometrical tools in practice. Second, exercises are E-views oriented, which is also a good point given the user-friendly E-views interface. This book is a very good introductory book for applied econometrics. I've read some reviews criticizing the book for its novice approach and lack of theoretical ground. Well, I would have done so too IF AN ONLY IF the book title had been "Advanced Theory in Econometrics". But it is not!

5 out of 5 stars Good Starting Point for Econometrics.......2003-05-31

In 2000, I wrote a review of this text. I still stand by my assertion that this is an excellent introduction to econometrics. One thing that I failed to mention in my 2000 review is that this book is good for people who have never seen econometrics in their life. Furthermore, don't expect to see proofs, theorems, etc. This book does not emphasize mathematics.

For a good introductory book that does incorporate calculus, some proofs, etc., get Gujarati's "Basic Econometrics" (not to be confused with Gujarati's "Essentials of Econometrics"). If you're only going to have one introductory book, and you want a mathematical treatment, get Gujarati. If you want an introductory book without a mathematical treatment, get Studenmund.

          3 out of 5 stars Warning.......2002-12-24

This is to econometrics what Lego is to housebuilding. Harsh, perhaps, but this book should be read as a primer before stepping in to the heavy stuff.

          Book Description

Applied Nonparametric Regression brings together in one place the techniques for regression curve smoothing involving more than one variable. The computer and the development of interactive graphics programs has made curve estimation popular. This volume focuses on the applications and practical problems of two central aspects of curve smoothing: the choice of smoothing parameters and the construction of confidence bounds. The methods covered in this text have numerous applications in many areas using statistical analysis. Examples are drawn from economics--such as the estimation of Engel curves--as well as other disciplines including medicine and engineering. For practical applications of these methods a computing environment for exploratory Regression--XploRe--is described.

4 out of 5 stars Very clear and readable account of nonparametric regression.......2001-04-11

This book deals with nonparametric regression, mainly kernel regression, though other estimators are also covered. This is a very clear and succinct discussion of the theory and application of this very important area of modern statistics. This book is one of the first few books on the subject (I saw a preprint of this book while a graduate student and bought a copy when it first appeared). Kernel estimators are known to be less efficient and suffer from boundary effects when the underlying regression is very smooth (twice differentiable). Local polynomial regression is the natural remedy and has experienced rapid developments in last 10 years. Fan and Gijbel's book in 1996 has detailed discussions on local polynomial estimation, an area which I also publish a few papers. But this book still contains substantial materials not found elsewhere. For example, this book has excellent discussion of nonparametric methods in econometric applications. I highly recommend it for its good introduction and as a valuable reference book on this subject.

            Description:
We propose a natural conjugate prior for the instrumental variables regression model. The prior is a natural conjugate one since the marginal prior and posterior of the structural parameter have the same functional expressions which directly reveal the update from prior to posterior. The Jeffreys prior results from a specific setting of the prior parameters and results in a marginal posterior of the structural parameter that has an identical functional form as the sampling density of the limited information maximum likelihood estimator. We construct informative priors for the Angrist-Krueger [1991. Does compulsory school attendance affect schooling and earnings? Quarterly Journal of Economics 106, 979-1014] data and show that the marginal posterior of the return on education in the US coincides with the marginal posterior from the Southern region when we use the Jeffreys prior. This result occurs since the instruments are the strongest in the Southern region and the posterior using the Jeffreys prior, identical to maximum likelihood, focusses on the strongest available instruments. We construct informative priors for the other regions that make their posteriors of the return on education similar to that of the US and the Southern region. These priors show the amount of prior information needed to obtain comparable results for all regions.

                    Book Description

After a post-war period with extensive use of public service models and macroeconomically orchestrated planned regimes, the 1980's and early 1990's saw a reversion to a more liberal style of economic regulation in Western Europe. The movement from one type of regulation regime to another illustrates the paradigmatic character or economic organization and, as a result, a thorough investigation of the basic assumptions behind the choice of regulatory direction is required. At this deep level, regulatory issues are beyond a single social science discipline and much of the literature on economic regulation is specialized and too narrow to address the issues involved.

                      Book Description

How Not to Turn into Your Mother is an uproarious view of the mother-daughter relationship, featuring "What Not to Do!" "A Defense Manual for Daughters," and "Alternative Solutions If You've Already Turned into Your Mother."

How many times do I have to tell you . . .

How many times have you caught yourself saying or doing the exact same thing your mother said/did (you know, the thing you swore you'd never say/do)? It's something you try to avoid your whole life¿turning into your mother.

Have you ever looked into the mirror and found your mother (or worse, her body) staring back at you?

This tongue-in-cheek book offers hilarious advice and tips on how to avoid the snare of actually becoming her. And it's not too late; it even contains a special section if you've already turned into her.

Chapters such as "Can Mom Read Your Mind? Yes! And Here's How She Does It!" "Seeking Self-Help: Stop Mothering Yourself," and even "The Benefits of Sulking" are all included.

How Not to Turn into Your Mother also features the "Power Struggles Between Mommy and You" chart, which follows the stages of development in your relationship from prenatal to old age, as well as a sample mother-daughter contract (should you need to go that far).
