Among the club of lesbian authors who can actually write, this author is one of a small handful whose books feel original. This time she concentrates more on the legal plot than some readers looking for the usual romance-by-numbers might like. But I thought the depth in this area really added to the story and made the characters more real. This is a good story with plenty more to offer than the predictable slumber party before the happy ending formula.

If all books of this genre were this well written, I wouldn't feel the need to throw some of them away. Great writing and a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting on multiple levels.......2004-07-21

Cameron Abbott?s sophomore novel, ?An inexpressible State of Grace,? is the only novel of hers that I have read so far. I was pleasantly surprised by her writing style. I find, too often, that many lesbian romances lack any other points of interest. Abbott masterfully intertwines four plot lines giving each one enough time and development to stand on its own while allowing them to interact with each other, to form an overall narrative arc through out the story. The differences between plot and story aren?t made in a haphazard way like many immature authors. The montage of scenes expertly paints protagonist Ashleigh Moore?s past over the reader?s perception of the present world she is living in.

Unlike another reviewer I found the details of Ashleigh?s professional life to add a depth and reality to Ashleigh?s world. An integral part of Ashleigh?s identity is tied up in her professional life; it effects the way she interacts with her family, her father in particular, and it is responsible for introducing her to her love interest. Ashleigh?s method of reacting to the world is, in every way, the work of a legal mind. As Abbott is a lawyer, readers might compliment her for writing what she knows, rather than failing to truly understand the way other people think.

This book was a joy to read. I utterly enjoyed following Ashleigh as she discovered and finally confronted the truth about herself, learned the causes behind her family?s dynamic, fell in love with Renee, and confronted the ethical failings of people professionally close to her. I highly recommend this book.

Abbott?s passion for what she does is beautifully apparent in the way that she writes; enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Love the way she writes.......2004-07-17

This is a really great book. It's not the light romance that most of lesbian books are, although there is a lovestory in it. But it has much more depth then just a lovestory. And I love the way she writes. It's so easy to read. This book gives you great value for your money.
And I can't imagine that it won't be nominated for a Lambda-book-award.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as Abbot's first novel.......2004-07-01

I was really really looking forward to reading this second novel of Cameron Abbott's and was really disappointed. (Ms. Abbott's first novel was 'To the Edge.') The storyline and characters are almost identical as the ones in her first novel (To the Edge). However, in this second book, the characters were much less likable and romantic/sexual. I turned this book into my local gay bookstore for a store credit as soon as I could.

I would NOT recommend this book and I hope Ms. Abbott's next book has more likable characters and does not get into the nitty gritty of 'the law' and concentrates more on developing the romantic relationship between her characters. I usually have this same gripe (the lack of developed characters) when i read mysery novels, which is why I hardly read them anymore.

      Book Description

This book bridges a crucial gap in the literature on gender and organizational culture by providing an historical account of how discriminatory practices develop, are maintained but also change over time. Drawing on in-depth interviews and extensive archival material, the author presents an historical account of the way specific discriminatory practices developed and changed over the life of three airline companies--British Airways, Air Canada, and Pan American Airways. The book covers the period 1919 to 1991 and is organized around key periods in the hiring and treatment of female employees but the focus is on gender in the broadest sense of the word (looking at the social construction of male and female sexuality; heterosexuality and homosexuality). Gender is explored through analysis of organizational symbolism, workplace practices and organizational structuring. As a history of discriminatory practices the book is unique in the field of business and corporate history.

        Book Description

This book analyses the rhetorical background and strategies of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) and those of Ronald Reagan in reference to the 1981 strike. Was firing 11,000 federal employees the only option, or the best option available? The work examines the applicable federal statute, which provided and encouraged more leeway than the administration exercised; the stormy relations between the controllers and the Federal Aviation Administration; and the development of the rhetorical persona of Ronald Reagan, a persona favoring epideictic over deliberative rhetoric.

        Book Description

Robert W. Kaps examines air transport labor law in the United States as well as the underlying legislative and policy directives established by the federal government. The body of legislation governing labor relations in the private sector of the U.S. economy consists of two separate and distinct acts: the Railway Labor Act (RLA), which governs labor relations in the railroad and airline industries, and the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), which governs labor relations in all other industrial sectors.

Although the NLRA closely follows the pattern established by the RLA, Kaps notes that the two laws are distinguishable in several important areas. Labor contracts negotiated under the RLA continue in perpetuity, for example, whereas all other labor contracts expire at a specified date. Other important areas of difference relate to the collective bargaining process itself, the procedures for the arbitration of disputes and grievances, and the spheres of authority and jurisdiction to consider such matters as unfair labor practices.

Congress established a special labor law for railroad and airline workers for several reasons. Because of transportation’s critical importance to the economy, an essential goal of public policy has been to ensure that both passenger and freight transportation services continue without interruption. Production can cease—at least temporarily—in most other industries without causing significant harm to the economy. When transportation stops, however, production stops. Thus Congress saw fit to enact a statute that contained provisions to ensure that labor strife would not halt rail services. Primarily because of the importance of air mail transportation, the Railway Labor Act of 1926 was extended to the airline industry in 1936.

The first section of this book introduces labor policy and presents a history of the labor movement in the United States. Discussing early labor legislation, Kaps focuses on unfair labor practices and subsequent major labor statutes.

The second section provides readers with a comparison of labor provisions that apply to the railroad and airline industries as well as to the remainder of the economy.

The final section centers on the evolution of labor in the airline industry. The author pays particular attention to recent events affecting labor in commercial aviation, particularly the effect of airline deregulation on airline labor.

            Book Description

Economics of the U.S. Commercial Airline Industry: Productivity, Technology and Deregulation illustrates the impact of upstream technological change in capital goods (aircraft and aircraft engines) on demand, productivity, and cost reduction in the U.S. airline industry for the years 1970-1992. The aim is to separate supply-side technology push from demand pull in determining investment in aircraft in the US airline industry. The focus of inquiry in this study is at the company level, so the measures are sensitive to company differences such as financial costs, payload, and existing aircraft inventory rather than industry averages. This monograph builds on the new developments in econometric modeling and has a substantial technical component. The quantitative results lead to implications for understanding technology and its impact on the airline industry, as well as for formulating regulatory policy.

                Book Description

This is the story of power and the abuse of power that led to the demise of a major federal union and the firing of over 11,000 federal employees. The Professional Air Traffic Controller's Organization (PATCO) misjudged the political sentiment of the nation, the willingness of the Reagan Administration to implement its social and economic agenda, and the ability of the union to achieve its goals through work stoppages. The events of 1981, chronicled in this story, severely undermined the union movement and set the stage for labor-management relations in the public sector for the subsequent two decades. Equally important, issues that lead to the PATCO strike were not addressed by the FAA or the Department of Transportation, and many of the same problems still plague the federal system today. While the PATCO debacle and its aftermath are now reasonably clear, what is unclear is whether the union and government leaders learned from the event.

This original, provocative work makes a thorough and comprehensive enquiry into the relationship that exists between firms and markets, with separate, in-depth examinations of both the existence and inner organisation of the firm. Sautet develops an accomplished and convincing theory that encompasses a wealth of existing literature and leads it in an entirely new direction.

                          Description:
Few examples exist in the common property literature of community-managed forestry enterprises (CFEs) operating in competitive markets. Yet, in Mexico, there are hundreds of such examples at varying levels of vertical integration. At a time when devolution of rights to forests is expanding worldwide, collective management of timber operations presents an emerging community forestry policy option. CFEs have unusual institutional features that force a reconsideration of theories of the firm, unique management tensions, varieties of possible institutional arrangements governing stocks, and flows of the natural resource, and may have special importance in delivering both economic equity and environmental protection.

                            Description:
In this article, we propose an entrepreneurial theory of the firm that is based on dispersed knowledge. We argue that the dispersion of knowledge over people and places and over time leads to uncertainty. This uncertainty, combined with heterogeneous expectations and the nexus of an individual and opportunity, explains the emergence of new firms. We then suggest that the theory of the firm proposed by us answers questions that have been overlooked by alternative theories. The specific question we discuss in this article is when and why an entrepreneurial opportunity will be taken to market through an existing firm, and when and why a new firm will be chosen as a vehicle for taking a new idea to market, i.e., whether the residual will be concentrated in an existing or in a new firm.

                              Description:
The creation of entrepreneurial rents occurs under conditions of uncertainty. Yet current theories of rent appropriation such as transactions cost theories of the firm focus their efforts primarily on how quasi-rents - rents that have already been created - are appropriated by parties to that exchange. Entrepreneurs face a dual challenge, that of creating entrepreneurial rents and appropriating some of these rents. Moreover, this challenge usually exists at a time when the entrepreneurial rents that might be created are not known or anticipatable. Indeed, entrepreneurs not only concern themselves with ensuring that they are able to appropriate at least some of the rents that might be eventually created but in fact they may not create any rents or potentially lose value. Understanding the dual nature of the rent creation and the rent appropriation problem has a variety of implications for the study of entrepreneurial organizations and generally for theory of the firm discussions.

                                      Description:
Why firms exist and how their boundaries should be drawn are central issues in several academic disciplines. The field of entrepreneurship continues to struggle with a theory of the firm. This paper suggests a theory of the entrepreneurial firm grounded in organizational economics and bounded by the rent generation and appropriation of entrepreneurial knowledge.
