          Book Description

This book is a thorough update of the original Methods and Materials of Demography (1976). Every chapter is new, written exclusively for this edition.
Like the original, Red Book, the Second Edition presents a systematic and comprehensive exposition of the methods used by technicians and research workers in dealing with demographic data. It is concerned with the ways data on population are gathered, classified, and treated to produce tabulations and various summarizing measures that reveal the significant aspects of the composition and dynamics of populations. It also sets forth the sources, limitations, underlying definitions, and bases of classification, as well as the techniques and methods that have been developed for summarizing and analyzing the data.

          5 out of 5 stars Go buy a copy.......2005-09-17

This new edition of a standard reference is most welcome and long overdue. Generally sound and providing the high quality expected, with several new topics covered very well. Special mention should be made of the very useful additional material on health issues. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the chapter on race and ethnicity which is already well out of date, focuses on US material on race and provides very little by way of useful or factual information on ethnicity. The information about international practices seriously thin and is badly flawed, despite some valuable comments which seem to have sneaked in. Why on earth for such a central reference work did the editorial board not find an ethnicist to co-author this chapter at the very least - this chapter is a sad and jumbled disappointment with little understanding of the topic and it misses entirely key issues and concepts such as ethnic mobility and the role of paternity effects. A quick look through the reference list for the chapter reveals the source of this lack of depth and lack of discussion of key issues - the primary research is nowhere to be seen and it depends far too heavily and uncritically on official US census publications. The appendix on GIS is welcome but is already also starting to date, as would be expected for such a fast moving area. Despite these short-comings, still a most welcome book and tremendous value for the price. Well bound and well printed, and the editors need to be complimented on a very high quality publication.

1 out of 5 stars Way too hard for the third grade!.......2005-04-04

My teacher used this book in third grade science. It was way too hard! This book might be good for grown-up people in college, but please... it's too hard for the third grade.

5 out of 5 stars A new version of the "Bible" of Demography.......2005-02-10

I remember the early days where I used to go through the old book "The Methods and Materials of Demography" while studying at the Cairo Demographic Center in the early 90s of last century. The new version is an innovative and invaluable addition to the fundamental books in the field. I highly recommend this book for all demographers worldwide.

5 out of 5 stars REVIEW OF THE 2ND EDITION.......2004-04-12

Another review displayed here refers to the 1st edition, which was published in 1976. This review covers the 2nd edition, which was published in March 2004. The 2nd Edition by J. Siegel and D. A. Swanson is hardbound and has around 850 pages. The price ($89.00) is unbelievably low for such a comprehensive and well-written book. It is filled with references and examples and provides updates on data sources while covering the many advances in methods and technology that have occurred since the publication of the first edition. This book can be used both in the classroom and by practitioners. Besides covering and updating everything that was in the 1st edition, it adds new chapters, appendices, and a cross-referenced comprehensive glossary. The 2nd edition by Siegel and Swanson is a worthy successor to the 1st edition by H. Shryock, J. Siegel, and E. Stockwell and is a mandatory book for anybody interested in demography.

          5 out of 5 stars A REVIEW OF THE 2nd EDITION.......2004-03-26

The other review displayed here for the Methods and Material of Demography refers to the 1st edition, published in 1976. This review covers the 2nd edition released in March 2004. The 2nd Edition by Siegel and Swanson is, indeed, the bible of demography. Filled with references and examples, it provides updates on data sources while covering the many advances in methods and technology that have occurred since the publication of the first edition. This book is well-crafted and can be used both in the classroom and by practictioners. Besides covering everything that was in the 1st edition, it adds new chapters and appendices (e.g., health demography and GIS) and provides an excellent cross-referenced glossary as well as a demography timeline. The 2nd edition is a worthy successor to the first edition and is a must-have book for anybody interested in demography.

            Book Description

This collection of essays and personal reflections is written from a social constructivist perspective and proposes practices that promote democratic conversations regarding diversity by creating opportunities to share personal stories and to listen to other people's stories. It examines policies and practices that can either empower or stifle understanding in different situations and presents stories to serve as catalysts to promote democratic conversations and multicultural understanding in various contexts. Focuses on feminist and micro-interaction issues. Features authentic stories told in the author's own voice which paints a picture that is sometimes challenging, sometimes difficult to hear, but always meant to stimulate conversations with self and others to deconstruct and reconstruct personal notions of diversity. Presents information from a social constructivist view to support the belief that affirming diversity is an ongoing process of evaluating and reconstructing knowledge through social discourse and interactions. Addresses important questions such as "How can we build bridges and connections without being able to talk across differences?" and "How can we affirm diversity when selected views are allowed to be voiced, while others are silenced?" For educators, counselors, and social workers.

                    Book Description

This text, dealing with particular themes in the field of human geography, provides a useful introduction to population geography. The book considers the two major themes of population growth and distribution and population migration and circulation. These themes are examined both generally and specifically through a series of case studies and exercises. The case studies are selected from developed regions of the world to provide the student with both a general knowledge of a broad field of study and a detailed knowledge of specific cases. The extensive bibliography includes both sources specifically referred to in the text and suggestions for further reading in the general field of study.

                          Book Description

Since the middle of twentieth century, economists have invested great resources into using statistical evidence to relate macroeconomic theories to the real world, and many new econometric techniques have been employed. In these two volumes, a distinguished group of economic theorists, econometricians, and economic methodologists examine how evidence has been used and how it should be used to understand the real world. Volume 1 focuses on the contribution of econometric techniques to understanding the macroeconomic world. It covers the use of evidence to understand the business cycle, the operation of monetary policy, and economic growth. A further section offers assessments of the overall impact of recent econometric techniques such as cointegration and unit roots. Volume 2 focuses on the labour market and economic policy, with sections covering the IS-LM model, the labour market, new Keynesian macroeconomics, and the use of macroeconomics in official documents (in both the USA and EU). These volumes will be valuable to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and practitioners for their clear presentation of opposing perspectives on macroeconomics and how evidence should be used. The chapters are complemented by discussion sections revealing the perspectives of other contributors on the methodological issues raised.

Backhouse, the editor of this book, presents a series of articles and discussions purporting to be concerned about using econometric techniques and analysis to study what is happening in the real world.Benoit Mandelbrot, who has spent over 50 years studying the actual behavior of real world price statistics, has demonstrated beyond any doubt that the macroeconomic and microeconomic price data is discontinuous, not continuous;demonstrates short and long run dependence(path dependence),not independence;is non linear, not linear;is non normal, not normal,so that the normal probability distribution can't be used as an accurate and reliable approximation of the data;finally, echoing Schumpeter, patterns appear, disappear, and then reappear with a regular irregularity, which means it is impossible to identify the ergodicity in the system. In fact,it is impossible to accurately separate and isolate the deterministic from the random influences over time.Neither Backhouse or any of the other econometricians in this book appear to be aware that they are about 30-40 years behind Mandelbrot.Econometricians appear to still be working under the assumption that they can assume linearity , stationarity and a normal distribution. They also appear not to be able to integrate the derivatives that appear in chapters 10,19,20, and 21 of Keynes's 1936 General Theory in order to obtain the original functions that make up the mathematical model constructed by Keynes in that book from which he derived his results:"His (Eichenbaum's)objection to Keynes is not that he is wrong but that it is impossible, even decades later,to work out what he meant".(Backhouse and Salanti,p.6).It is quite easy to work out what Keynes meant if one simplifies the elasticity results in chapters 10,20, and 21 of the GT.Any mathematically literate economist who can integrate and simplify elasticities can obtain the following result:w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi),where mpl is the macroscopic marginal product of labor derived from an aggregated neoclassical production function(GT;pp.283,285),w is the money wage,p is the expected price level,w/p is the expected real wage, mpc is the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods, and mpi is the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods.Unless mpc+mpi =1,involuntary unemployment will exist.Labor,in the aggregate, will be unable to cut its money wage in order to reduce this type of unemployment.A set of multiple, stable unemployment equilibria will exist.Keynes spells it out twice on pp.261-262 of the GT for those readers who do not have the technical capabilities to follow his analysis in chapters 20 and 21-unless the mpc=1(mpc+mpi=1),involuntary unemployment will occur. The major reason why mpc+mpi <1 is due to decision making under conditions of uncertainty,by which Keynes means the existence of Ellsbergian Ambiguity. The mild risk of the normal distribution used by M Friedman,R Lucas, etc., to model the business cycle is a very special case.

"You know you're married to a trucker when he loads the dishwasher and straps everything down." If your wedding cake topper was a toy eighteen-wheeler, if you spent your honeymoon in a parking lot, and if you've spent every anniversary since then at the truck show, you NEED this book! The best compilation of complaints I've ever read--highly recommended for truckers' wives, moms, kids, and other family members. This book is definitely in it for the long-haul!
