Bill Bryson has made a living out of traveling and then writing about it. In The Lost Continent he re-created the road trips of his childhood; in Neither Here nor There he retraced the route he followed as a young backpacker traversing Europe. When this American transplant to Britain decided to return home, he made a farewell walking tour of the British countryside and produced Notes from a Small Island. Once back on American soil and safely settled in New Hampshire, Bryson once again hears the siren call of the open road--only this time it's a trail. The Appalachian Trail, to be exact. In A Walk in the Woods Bill Bryson tackles what is, for him, an entirely new subject: the American wilderness. Accompanied only by his old college buddy Stephen Katz, Bryson starts out one March morning in north Georgia, intending to walk the entire 2,100 miles to trail's end atop Maine's Mount Katahdin.
If nothing else, A Walk in the Woods is proof positive that the journey is the destination. As Bryson and Katz haul their out-of-shape, middle-aged butts over hill and dale, the reader is treated to both a very funny personal memoir and a delightful chronicle of the trail, the people who created it, and the places it passes through. Whether you plan to make a trip like this one yourself one day or only care to read about it, A Walk in the Woods is a great way to spend an afternoon. --Alix Wilber
Book Description
Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes--and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.
For a start there's the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. Despite Katz's overwhelming desire to find cozy restaurants, he and Bryson eventually settle into their stride, and while on the trail they meet a bizarre assortment of hilarious characters. But A Walk in the Woods is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson's acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America's last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration,
A Walk in the Woods is destined to become a modern classic of travel literature.

Hit and Miss.......2007-10-22
I've read all of Bryson's books and you take the good with the bad. Yes, he's condescending, liberal to the extreme, preachy, an elitist who won't admit it, and hardly humble, but he's a fun guy to read, with good stories, good descriptions and generally, a quick wit.
I agree with all the positive and negative reviewers. While Bryson surely has a right to preach, it does seem rather arrogant in this book. But that's that pedantic lefties do, and Bryson is surely one.
How NOT to walk the Appalachian Trail.......2007-10-19
I've been a Bryson fan since a British friend gave me a copy of "The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America" years ago -- what, I wonder, was his point??
"A Walk in the Woods" is more entertaining if you've read "Notes from a Small Island" (1997). In that book, Bryson takes a walking trip around Britain, his home of nearly 20 years, before returning to live in the States. When you walk around Britain, you can take the train on the hard bits and have a pub meal and bed every night if you like.
The irony, then, of Bryson comparing the Appalachian Trail to that experience!
"A Walk in the Woods" is a laughing-out-loud book but as usual with Bryson, his writing is well researched and the informative parts are presented in an offbeat and personal way -- without detracting from their clarity. His reconnection with American social and environmental history is well presented
This book is an object lesson on how NOT to undertake a project like the AT -- yet it almost makes you believe you could do it! Or at least that you owe it to yourself to try.
Could not put it down.......2007-10-15
I have just recently started hiking and camping myself only really having any experience in the woods for no more than a few years. I found this book to read out like a fantasy of mine. Hiking in the middle of nowhere, No modern tools or advantages available to you. But it brought some realism to the dream. I felt I was there enjoying and suffering right with them. I want to thank Bill Bryson for writing this book and living the adventure.
If you enjoy the outdoors but cannot bare to take on the AT. Then get this book take a small hike to the top of of a cliff where the view is abundant, Lay out in some shade with a cool summer breeze and began your journey on the AT with Bill Bryson.
How not to discover the Appalachian Trail.......2007-10-13
This book has obviously appealed to many readers. Some seem to be attracted by the humour, others by the subject matter and many by the writing skills of the author himself. There are some interesting factoids buried in this book, and some descriptive passages were terrific.
This is the first of Mr Bryson's books that I have not enjoyed. The antics of Messrs Bryson and Katz, two middle-aged, ego-centric and totally underprepared hikers, irritated me enormously.
I am glad that this is not the first of Mr Bryson's books I have read. If it was, it would almost certainly be the last.

A Walk in the Woods.......2007-10-08
This is a book about a treacherous hike through a treacherous trail. When the author decides to take a hike on the Appalachian Trail, 2,200 miles of wilderness, who's a better choice to take with him than trusty old Katz... who was completely out of shape, had gone to rehab, and he hadn't seen in 25 years. From Bryson's adventure getting the equipment, to Katz's desperateness while trying to find a female, this is a great book cover to cover, and all the pages in between.
Several people, including me, have gone camping. So, if you have, imagine it, except for 6 months, without good campsites, and nonstop hiking all day long with massive packs on. Doesn't sound to fun, does it? I think Bryson did a great job making his torture seem comical. It's a hilarious book, the only funny nonfiction book I've ever read, which also causes it to be the only nonfiction I've ever enjoyed. But, as good as it is, while reading it I began to think it was sad. Here's why- it's nonfiction.
Book Description
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America–majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way–and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

A Walk through Life.......2007-10-19
You would think that a story of walking the Appalachian Trail would be pretty boring ... 'we walked up the hill then back down the other side' ... but Bill Bryson's version is anything but. Yes, he was on the trail, but his story-telling is of the land, the people, the history, and everything in between. A great book for anyone, highly recommended, now that I think about it, I ought to read it again ...
Hilarious.......2007-09-20
Bill Bryson, with a wit and writing style formed during his years in England, is simply the greatest travel writer around. Light-hearted and fun to read, this is a fantastic tale of an out-of-shape guy who attempts to hike the trail with a long lost "friend" who happens to be a recovering alcoholic. Bryson does a great job of explaining the difficulties associated with such a task while entertaining his audience with his descriptions of everything that can kill or maim you on the Appalachian Trail. Mixed throughout is a little history and science that provides a little extra meaning to the story.
Milk WILL come out of your nose!!!.......2007-09-14
Yes, yes, you will laugh uproariously when you read this book! I've read it twice, and still can't believe how hilarious (and informative) it is.
Oh, Bill, I just love you!
Yea !! He walked it, well almost ~.......2007-09-13
Wonderful walking memoir..In my next life, something I would love to do in part...so this was the next best thing..Such a book can run a risk of being tedious..long winded..Not this book, a rapid read, entertaining and informative all the way..He's not Patrick Mcmanus as a writer, but then he doesn't write ficton..
Always breezy, sometimes laugh out loud funny.......2007-09-05
Dying is easy, comedy is hard as the saying goes. Humorous writing is probably even harder than comedy, and even a really funny story usually flattens out in print. That said, this is pretty good stuff, and was occassionally Thurber-like in it's understated hyperbole- (if there is such a thing). Humor, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I personally found the book pretty dang funny.
It is, as the title might make you guess, the story of Bryson and his walk over large chunks of the AT. He corrals an old bud from the old days, a friend who toured Europe some 20 odd years ago with him and who has been in a bit of a downward spiral ever since. To me his companion made the book, adding an everyman quality, a comic relief, and a very sympathetic character with a lot of emotional depth all at once. Kind of picture a less obnoxious John Candy from Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
Not exactly a ton happens on the trail- it's not the north woods, or the Amazon, or some rebel infested region of the Phillipines, so the drama is more timid and is less about the perils of wild beasts and killers and more about the perils of poor hygiene. Be that as it may, it is the woods, and it is remote, and it's nice to get away from it all, if only vicariously.
I hope it's clear that I liked the book pretty well, although I'd not put it down as a classic or anything. It's more than worth the few hours it takes to read it, though, and I'm pretty sure you're going to find it entertaining at the least.

My Kingdom For A Motel Room And The X Files!!!.......2005-04-12
This book made my want to hit the open trail and go for a long hike which is exactly what Bill Bryson decides to do . Accompanied by his friend Stephen Katz they decide the walk the famous Appalachian Trail. Along the way they meet an obnoxious hiker named Mary Ellen who tries to hook up with them much to their dismay and Katz lives in hope of an intimate encounter with a 300 pound lady by the name of Buelah who he meets at a small town laundromat. It is a testament to Bill Bryson's writing skills that he can make a simple walk so entertaining and fun to read. One funny incident concerns Katz's overwhelming desire to abandon the hike and go to a Motel to watch The X Files and drink some cream soda!!!The story is full of gems like this and it would have to one of my all time favourite books.Read this book and I guarantee that you will want to hit the open trail just like me.
All quiet on the Appalachian Trail.......2005-01-14
This book was written in the style of John McPhee and even quoting him once in a while. It includes facts and people like "The Perfect Storm." Then Bill Bryson adds first hand personal experiences. You can identify with his comments that do not have to be funny to be familiar.
This book recounts Bill Bryson's experiences on the Appalachian Trail. The dry facts can be picked up through other material. However the personal experiences are just that, personal. If you have never been hiking then you still get a feel for what you have missed. However if you have hiked then you can really appreciate the people he met, and circumstances that he went through. There are hikers and then there are hikers. In the Boy Scouts you are usually in a well-organized group, in the military you have to be more cautious of objects and terrain, Sierra Club and Outward Bound have their unique points of view. So if his experience is different, it still makes for fun reading.
I even liked the sections on selecting and using the equipment. I am afraid if I had met Bill Bryson on the trail; I would have been one of those "equipment comparing" people.
Anyway do not expect an epic and you will enjoy the time you spend reading this book. Oh, and it does make me want to go hiking.

Book Description
God only knows what possessed Bill Bryson, a reluctant adventurer if ever there was one, to undertake a gruelling hike along the world's longest continuous footpath—The Appalachian Trail.
The 2,000-plus-mile trail winds through 14 states, stretching along the east coast of the United States, from Georgia to Maine. It snakes through some of the wildest and most spectacular landscapes in North America, as well as through some of its most poverty-stricken and primitive backwoods areas.
With his offbeat sensibility, his eye for the absurd, and his laugh-out-loud sense of humour, Bryson recounts his confrontations with nature at its most uncompromising over his five-month journey.
An instant classic, riotously funny, A Walk in the Woods will add a whole new audience to the legions of Bill Bryson fans.

Book Description
The rational expectations hypothesis (REH) dominates economic modeling in areas ranging from monetary theory, macroeconomics, and general equilibrium to finance. In this book, Roger Guesnerie continues the critical analysis of the REH begun in his Assessing Rational Expectations: Sunspot Multiplicity and Economic Fluctuations, which dealt with the questions raised by multiplicity and its implications for a theory of endogenous fluctuations. This second volume emphasizes "eductive" learning: relying on careful reasoning, agents must deduce what other agents guess, a process that differs from the standard evolutionary learning experience in which agents make decisions about the future based on past experiences. A broad "eductive" stability test is proposed that includes common knowledge and results in a unique "rationalizable expectations equilibrium." This test provides the basis for Guesnerie's theoretical assessment of the plausibility of the REH's expectational coordination, emphasizing, for different categories of economic models, conditions for the REH's success or failure.
Guesnerie begins by presenting the concepts and methods of the eductive stability analysis in selected partial equilibrium models. He then explores to what extent general equilibrium strategic complementarities interfere with partial equilibrium considerations in the formation of stable expectations. Guesnerie next examines two issues relating to eductive stability in financial market models, speculation and asymmetric price information. The dynamic settings of an infinite horizon model are then taken up, and particular standard and generalized saddle-path solutions are scrutinized. Guesnerie concludes with a review of general questions and some "cautious" remarks on the policy implications of his analysis.
Book Description
Just as macroeconomic models describe the overall economy within a changing, or dynamic, framework, the models themselves change over time. In this text Stephen J. Turnovsky reviews in depth several early models as well as a representation of more recent models. They include traditional (backward-looking) models, linear rational expectations (future-looking) models, intertemporal optimization models, endogenous growth models, and continuous time stochastic models. The author uses examples from both closed and open economies. Whereas others commonly introduce models in a closed context, tacking on a brief discussion of the model in an open economy, Turnovsky integrates the two perspectives throughout to reflect the increasingly international outlook of the field.
This new edition has been extensively revised. It contains a new chapter on optimal monetary and fiscal policy, and the coverage of growth theory has been expanded substantially. The range of growth models considered has been extended, with particular attention devoted to transitional dynamics and nonscale growth. The book includes cutting-edge research and unpublished data, including much of the author's own work.

Book Description
Macroeconomic Modelling has undergone radical changes in the last few years. There has been considerable innovation in developing robust solution techniques for the new breed of increasingly complex models. Similarly there has been a growing consensus on their long run and dynamic properties, as well as much development on existing themes such as modelling expectations and policy rules. This edited volume focuses on those areas which have undergone the most significant and imaginative developments and brings together the very best of modelling practice.
We include specific sections on (I) Solving Large Macroeconomic Models, (II) Rational Expectations and Learning Approaches, (III) Macro Dynamics, and (IV) Long Run and Closures. All of the contributions offer new research whilst putting their developments firmly in context and as such will influence much future research in the area. It will be an invaluable text for those in policy institutions as well as academics and advanced students in the fields of economics, mathematics, business and government. Our contributors include those working in central banks, the IMF, European Commission and established academics.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive account of the theoretical structures, database, computation and application of ORANI-INT. ORANI-INT is a multi-period elaboration of ORANI, a well-known computable general equilibrium model of the Australian economy. The implications of assuming that expectations are model consistent are contrasted with those of the alternative assumption that expectations are static. A generic algorithm for solving a wide range of economic models is described in detail. The algorithm is portable because it is implemented in GEMPACK, a commercially available software package. The major application reported in the book addresses the issue whether tariff reform policies should be announced ahead of their implementation. Many of the multisectoral models used throughout the world are static. The methodology presented in the book demonstrates that such models can be easily embedded into an intertemporal framework.

Book Description
Recently economists have more and more focussed on scenarios in which agents' views of the world may be erroneous.
These notes introduce the concept of perfect forecasting rules which provide best least-squares predictions along the evolution of an economic system.
The framework for nonparametric adaptive learning schemes is developed and it is argued that plausible learning schemes should aim at estimating a perfect forecasting rule taking into account the correct feedback structure of an economy.
A link is provided between the traditional rational-expectations view and recent behavioristic approaches.

Description:
Several researchers have examined Lucas' misperceptions model as well as various propositions derived from it within a cross-section empirical framework. The cross-section approach imposes a single monetary policy regime for the entire period. Our paper innovates on existing tests of those rational expectations propositions by allowing the simultaneous effect of monetary and short-run aggregate supply (oil price) shocks on output behavior and the employment of advanced panel econometric techniques. Our empirical findings, for a sample of 41 countries over 1949-1999, provide evidence in favor of the majority of rational expectations propositions.

A humorous, unique, and insightful look at the world, its people, and their cultures as seen through Mad Dog's eyes. Fifty-three columns include tales from a four-week car trip across the United States with stops at the Voodoo Museum, the UFO Museum in Roswell, and Bongo Java, a coffee house with a cinnamon bun that looks like Mother Theresa. There's the journal from his two-month stay in St-Malo, France, where he discovered why he, as an American, was getting the cold shoulder. And it wasn't his bad Jerry Lewis imitation. There are tales from a six-month stay in Bali, a meeting with a Russian spy in Cuba, the coronation of the Slug Queen in Eugene, Oregon, and his transformation from being a camping weenie to eating weenies while camping. It's a view of the world as you've never seen it before!

I WANT A WINDOW SEAT!.......2001-03-17
Mad Dog provides hilariously funny glimpses into the lives and customs of other cultures. What a great way to learn geography AND foriegn languages! As a huge fan of his web site and travel columns, I highly reccommend anything he has to offer. His quirky sense of humor and amusing anecdotes brighten my day. His books are also great for use as an exercise plan. Be sure and stretch before reading. I laughed so hard my sides hurt! Without Mad Dog, the world would be a dismal place indeed. Mad Dog's "If It's Such a Small World Then Why Have I Been Sitting on this Airplane for Twelve Hours?" and "Skywriting at Night", are necessities for anyone with a pulse. Or without...a good laugh just might give someone a jump start.
Laughing My Way Around the World.......2001-03-06
I laughed so hard it hurt. Having traveled quite a bit myself, and seen many of the places and things written about, I thought I knew where I'd been. After reading Mad Dog's take on things, I'm not so sure. His oddly stilted outlook, along with his quick wit, not only make you feel as if you're actually there, but let you see things from a completely unique perspective. Sometimes irrelevant, sometimes insightful, but always right on the money and uproaringly funny, these travel tales let you see the "real" places usually overlooked (often with very good reason) by the standard tourist. And yet, the information and advice is truly quite helpful - whether intended to be or not. For a great time learning about new places, getting another viewpoint, or finding out that, according to Mad Dog, you might not know the place you've been at all, you have to check ou this hilarious new book.
An ArmChair Trip Around the World.......2001-03-04
Mad Dog's latest book takes us on a jaunt around the world in his inimitable quirky style. A delightful rendezvous for the world weary traveler as well as the armchair couch potato. It is full of humorous tales, amazing anecdotes and insightful perspectives on various cultures, be it stateside or worldwide. Once again, Mad Dog tickles our funny bone and keep us panting for more.
Mad Dog at his Usual Best!!.......2001-03-04
After reading Mad Dog's columns for years on both his website and in newspapers throughout the country, it is a pleasure to finally read this compilation of his finest travel columns. He is truly at his best when observing the quirks of the human existence, be it here in the U.S., in France, Czechoslovakia, Bali, or wherever his nomadic wings propel him. As much as this book is about the places he's been and the customs he's experienced, it's even more about the people he's met...and that's what shines the mirror on ourselves so brightly. Equal parts hilarity, witticism, sarcasm, warmth, and compassion, this book confirms that though it may be a small world, there are some huge observations to be made. And nobody makes them as thoroughly entertaining as Mad Dog does.
Bill Bryson and Dave Barry move over!.......2001-03-03
It's about time! I've been a fan of Mad Dog's hilarious travel writing since seeing some of them in the newspaper a couple of years back, and then got turned onto his web site. Time after time he's dead on, both in his humorous outlook as well as his insight into people, places, and cultures around the world. Whether they're places you've been or you're living vicariously through him, you'll love it.
